Resumen
Abstract My ambition with this paper is to throw some light on Charles S. Peirce’s (1839–1914) semiotic model of learning. Peirce developed this model in his later writings, where he integrated his phenomenology, pragmatism, and semiotics while renewing all three. I start by introducing an analogy on pedagogy used by Peirce in one of his 1903 lectures on phenomenology. Next, I sketch out Peirce’s perspective on the ways in which we learn from experience. In the last section, I map out Peirce’s semiotic model, while indicating some prospects and limitations of a Peircean outlook on the paradoxical attributions of knowledge and learning.

Resumen
Signifying practices by which living creatures communicate, are, according to Sebeok, the survival-machines. Accordingly, as represented by the semiotic text analysis or Bakhtin's textology, one can speak about a human survival-machine. This has been studied by different semiotic schools (including the Moscow-Tartu school) referring to language, culture, genre and, importantly, text ideology. In this article, the aspects of textology in Peirce's generalized theory of signs become analysed. After a discussion of the concept of text in Peirce's (published and unpublished) writings, its relationship with semiosis and other Peircean categories isshown. The project of elaborating Peirce-based text-semiotics expects that it must be dramatically different from other sign-theoretical text-theories. This may be a path towards more inter-subjective and creative textology.

Resumen
Abstract: This article presents how metaphoric semiosis develops from the perspective of Peircean semiotics. The study takes as theoretical framework the general foundations of metaphor as described by classical theories, its recognized cognitive nature and the theory of signs developed by Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914) based on his three phenomenological categories. This is on the assumption that the application of Peirce’s broad conceptual tools – philosophical and semiotic – to his concept of metaphor as a hypoicon and its subdivisions constitutes an original and dynamic theory of metaphor, capable of operationalizing integrated analyzes of multimodal aspects of metaphor. In conclusion, considerations are made about the truth value of a good metaphor according to Peircean theoretical framework. Keywords: metaphor; semiotics; meaning; cognition; iconicity; multimodality.

Abstract Taking influence from Peirce’s phenomenological categories (Firstness, Secondness, Thirdness), a notion of what we call bottom-up modeling has become increasingly significant in research areas interested in learning, cognition, and development. Here, following a particular reading of Peircean semiotics (cf. Deacon, Terrence. 1997. The symbolic species: The co-evolution of language and the brain. London and New York: W. W. Norton; Sebeok, Thomas and Marcel Danesi. 2000. The forms of meaning: Modelling systems theory and semiotic analysis. Berlin and New York: Mouton de Gruyter), modeling, and thus also learning, has mostly been thought of as ascending from simple, basic sign types to complex ones (iconic – indexical – symbolic; Firstness – Secondness – Thirdness). This constitutes the basis of most currently accepted (neo-Peircean) semiotic modeling theories and entails the further acceptance of an unexamined a priori coherence between complexity of cognition and complexity of signification. Following recent readings of Peirce’s post-1900 semiotic, we will present, in abbreviated form, a discussion as to the limits of this theoretical approach for theories of learning that draws upon Peirce’s late semiotic philosophy, in particular his late work on iconicity and propositions. We also explore the corollary conceptions of semiotic resources and competences and affordances to develop an ecological perspective on learning that notably does not impose a linear developmental progression from simple to complex. In conclusion, we address some of the implications of this (post-Peircean) conceptualization for transdisciplinary research into learning.

Resumen
In this article I trace the historical development of Peirce’s semiotic rhetoric from its early appearance as a sub-discipline of symbolistic to its mature incarnation as one of the three main branches of the science of semiotic, and argue that this change in status is a symptom of Peirce’s broadening semiotic interest. The article shows how the evolution of Peirce’s theory of signs is linked to changes in his conception of logic. This modification is not merely a minor justification in his classification of the sciences; rather, it indicates a growing understanding of the interconnection between the different semiotic sub-disciplines. The scope and character of the mature discipline of rhetoric is further discussed in terms of a possible clash between rhetorical and methodological emphases, and a conciliatory strategy is suggested. The article concludes with some reflections on the relevance of Peircean rhetoric for future work in Peirce studies and semiotics.

Resumen
AbstractThis paper discusses the promises and limits of a Peircean semiotic approach to the concept of style in law. It does so in two steps: first (1) by identifying the place of style within the structure of law as a system of signs, then (2) by conceptualising the link between law and style in the thought of C.S. Peirce and highlighting some of the insights from a Peircean take on legal semiotics that may contribute to our understanding of the role of style in making meaning in law. It is argued that, for a Peircean analysis of law, three levels can be distinguished, from the ‘surface structure’ down to the ‘deep structure’. It is at the middle level (that of the ‘basic structure’) that a semiotic approach can yield coherent insights in terms of style, by examining the symbols and metaphors that make for the expressibility of ‘habits’, namely experience-based patterns of action and interpretation.

Resumen
ABSTRACTPeircean semiotics has retained a place in the study of music for more than 40 years. Few studies, however, have focused upon arguably the most important aspects of Peirce's thought: his contribution to logic and his development of a pragmatic approach to epistemology. This article develops a theory of Peircean semiotics in music that is rigorously derived from the key insights Peirce offered to philosophy. It focuses upon his theory of the proposition and posits an approach to music analysis that is sensitive to the importance of music's internal structure while recognizing the enormously significant role played by cultural contexts and social forces in the development of musical meanings. The article introduces Peircean semiotics and develops a theory of musical valency with particular reference to the Allegro of Mozart's ‘Prague’ Symphony. It concludes by theorizing the role of cultural and ideological forces in articulating and saturating a music's valency.

Resumen
Departing from the common view according to which structuralist semiology (the Saussurean tradition), pragmatist semiotics (the Peircean tradition) and phenomenological sociology (Husserl, Schutz, Berger and Luckmann, Garfinkel) are seen as mutually exclusive alternatives, the article attempts to outline their synthesis. The net result of the synthesis is that a conception emerges wherein action theories (rational choice, Weber, etc.) are based on phenomenological sociology, and phenomenological sociology is based on neo-structuralist semiotics, which is a synthesis of the Saussurean and the Peircian traditions of understanding habits of interpretation and interaction. This provides us with a research programme for semiotic sociology.

Resumen
The notion of “meaning” is central to marketing because it is only through the making of meaning that “added value” can be created. The marketing profession has several models of how such meaning is created, but Peircean semiotics can shed further light on the activity of meaning-making itself and the stages that are involved in this process. This article explores the differences between Peircean and Saussurian semiotics and discusses how these two semiotic traditions construe meaning creation. In particular, it applies the Peircean semiotic model of meaning-making to the notion of concept formation, and the classificatory aspects of this process. This enables convergences to be identified between qualitative research methodologies and semiotics. This, in turn, opens up the possibility of a new kind of qualitative research that understands, and explores, how individual consumers form their concepts. It does this by identifying the semiotic structures that are involved in this process. It will be argued that the resulting framework of “Qualitative Semiotics” has the potential to take semiotics beyond the remit of cultural analysis and to refocus it on processes of individual consumer cognition.

Resumen
The paper discusses how the semiotic relationships involved in the process of creating a documentary, interconnect and affect the documentary's truth claims from the perspective of Peirce's semiotic theory. To do this, I created an autobiographical film called 'Annabelle Blue' and then analyzed the experience. The making of 'Annabelle Blue' involved a number of representations, each of which involved the interplay of iconic, indexical and symbolic elements and each of which had a substantial influence on how the process continued. It is my contention that documentary's truth claims must be evaluated in light of the assumption that documentary representation is a dynamic, creative process involving the jostling for position between semiotic aspects at every level.

This research dealt with a reflection on the theories of semiotic representation registers by Raymond Duval and Charles Sanders Peirce Semiotics. The study answers the following question: which Peircean signs are used to analyze the registers of semiotic representation and what is the semiotics for mathematics and its teaching? To seek answers to our question, we conducted, through a literature review, analysis of the analogies we found between them. The main analogies that guided the study were: a) the formation of semiotic representation can be a qualisign, an icon, or a rheme b) the treatment may be a sinsigno, an index, or a dicent sign and c) the conversion can be a legisign, a symbol, or an argument. In addition, we summarize these analogies in a table containing the main terms of Duval and Peirce theories, which resulted in a semiotic model to analyze the teaching and learning of mathematics. Having said that, we apply this model in the study of mathematical objects, plane, straight line, vector, and points of spatial analytic geometry. With the result of the analysis of the objects, we find that Peircean semiotics can help identify potential problems and solutions that we can find in the teaching and learning of analytic geometry. We note that the Peircean signs that allow such identification and solution are legisign and symbol. Also, we realize that the argument can be the sign that propels individuals make the decision to solve problems and accomplish tasks. We suggest that the tenth Piercean class, (symbolic legisign) argument, may be responsible for the success in the teaching and learning of mathematics. We also infer that the model of Peirce classes for the teaching and learning of mathematics can help in finding the inferences of the actions taken in those cases. By analogy, we assume that the conversion is an activity of great importance in teaching and learning of mathematics and the theories of Duval and Peirce are valid to explain the mathematics and its teaching, even though the theory of semiotic representation registers treats mathematical objects and their representations as a whole, and the theory of Peirce takes its parts as different signs. Therefore, from the didactic point of view, our analysis was important regarding the study of the teaching and learning of mathematics, more specifically of analytic geometry, as we can see, in advance, in which sign of this mathematical object individuals will have difficulties

This case study, oriented by Merriam (1998) view, was elaborated aiming to understand how signs are manifested as mediators in the tacit knowledge sharing process, among members of a cooperative organization, based on the theoretical articulation of: (a) the principles postulated by Polanyi (1962; 1966) about the tacit knowledge, whose view defends the ineffability of this kind of knowledge, (b) Peirce´s ([1931-1958] 2000) semiotic theory, for whom signs are a representation of something for someone (p.46), implying that everything in the world is a sign, and (c) the entente about the Sociology of Knowledge, of Berger and Luckmann (1996), proposing a reality created upon our daily life, through our social interaction, which evokes (d) the integrating symbolic interactionist view offered by Charon (2009). The case was a cooperative private organization, which primary data were collected by interviews, participative observations, production of still and in movement images, and secondary data, documents provided by the organization, i.e., organization chart, members´ demographic data, information existing in the organization site and promotional brochure. The data diversity demanded a methodological articulation of analysis, inspired on Grounded Theory, proposed by Charmaz (2006), Semiotic Analysis, proposed by Santaella (2002), Still Images Analysis, proposed by Penn (2008), In Movement Analysis, proposed by Rose (2008), and Audio Analysis, proposed by Bauer (2008), regarding to the qualitative data, and the statistical technique of Simple Descriptive Analysis, based on Barbetta (2002), regarding to the quantitative data. The whole effort for organizing and analyzing the data involved the utilization of the software NVivo8. Additional theoretical approaches were incorporated during the process of analysis and interpretation, in order to give a context to the signing content identified in the organization-case, analyzed through a semiotic point of view as an institution, showing a predominance signing representation of the existing tacit knowledge, pertaining to the social historical contexts, in which its members lived during the major part of their lives, which contents are summarized to locate the reader in the analysis. There are three significative contributions in the present study. The first refers to the theoretical articulation, which proposes a process of semiotic perception to the tacit knowledge sharing. Such approach could be corroborated in the field research, which allowed, as the second contribution, the proposal of a theoretical model, which allows to evaluate the organizational evolution based on the tacit knowledge sharing, as well as questioning models that do not consider related historical-social aspects. The third contribution is based on the methodological articulation applied, and refers to this study assumption about the characteristics and signs under which the tacit knowledge can be shared, including the verbal signs. Based on this, the present work perspective proposes that the tacit knowledge sharing occurs through a symbolic, interactionist and institutional way, which makes that the innovative mode depends both on internal and external conditions, involving, however, aspects out of the organizational control.

In this work, we analyze synaesthetic evocations in lyrics of songs from Brazilian Folk Music. We started from the hypothesis that along with the current technological advancements and the confluence of media, we confront ourselves with syncretic feelings which can be surprised, under synaesthetic effects, on the discourse of the songs. The corpus of the research is constituted of the analysis of six lyrics from songs that, in their composition, evoke a mixture of the senses (sound, sight, touch, smell and taste). The theoretical reference involves conceptual definitions about what synaesthesia is and distinguishes this fenomenon from synaesthetic evocations, this one concerning language and poetry, while synaesthesia itself is closer to scientific questions and evidences. The authors used to treat synaesthesia were Simon Baron Cohen and John Harrison, Sérgio Roclaw Basbaum and Antônio Roberto Chiachiri Filho. Regarding the caracteristics and peculiarities of musical language, we used contributions from authors as Oliver Sacks, Murray Schafer and Jota Moraes. To treat the semiotic issues in the analyses of the songs, we count on the authors Lucia Santaella and Luiz Tatit, among others. The textual analyses were concieved under the Peircean semiotic concept, more especifically through the categories of firstness, secondness and thirdness and through trichotomy representamen, object and interpretant. More than classfications, we understand the lyrics of theses songs through meaning relations that emanate from the inner of verbal aspects and poetics, and, therefore, we mainly kept on those constructions that produce synaesthetic evocations, in other words, the ones that bring to memory the presence of feelings to compose a wide range of significations. Under the light of these significations, the analyses are based on the construction of interpretations that also value the global sense through observation of specific elements (concerning the five senses) and also the song as a whole, capable of communicating and conducting to the most miscellaneous sensible experiences

The study examines programming processes from the point of view of semiotics. Based on key concepts of computation and programming, it presents a critical review of the book Semiotics of Programming by Kumiko Tanaka-Ishii. The starting point is the Peircean argument of the affinity between the structure of logical reasoning and the mechanical processes in the logical machines of Jevons, Marquand e Babbage. The author takes the view that the philosophy of machines developed by Peirce in this context can serve as the basis of a computational semiotics and anchor a semiotics of programming appropriate to overcome prevailing dualist and Cartesian approaches, according to which human reasoning differs essentially from processes in nature in general and from mechanical processes in particular. The study reveals gaps in the semiotic theory of computation by Tanaka-Ishii, proposes ways to overcome them through the application of Peirce s semiotics and argues that the Peircean approach promises a better understanding of the cognitive processes involved in computation and programming

In this thesis we shall discuss the way in which the development of new cognitive mediations allows novel fields of exploration of creative activity to emerge. In a first step, we shall see how philosophical perspectives are articulated in research concerning Cybernetics, Cognitive Science and Systems theory. We will explore the nature of the mechanicist perspective with which these sciences generally address difficulties concerning conceptions of what comprises thought, information and creation. We shall discuss the extent to which mechanicism is limited in its consideration of relations between thought, creation and symbol, and the means by which the semiotics of C. S. Peirce can offer a more consistent means to address the correlations between symbols, signs and thoughts. We’ll examine how Peircean Semiotics, developed from its Phenomenology, conceives levels of intensity of qualities, relations and mediations existent in the dimensions of experience. We shall present Peirce’s arguments concerning the impossibility of reducing thought and creativity to mechanical processes, because implicit would be the disqualification of genuine manifestation of chance in the experience of a thought. Hence, questioning quali-signs as fields of manifestation of creativity, we’ll point towards the role of the icon in exploration of dimensions of corporality and signs that emerge from the cognitive interfaces of artificial systems. We shall then address Cyberculture as a paradigm of our contemporary socio-cultural condition, investigating in it manifestations of creative activity at the junctions of heterogeneous semiotic systems. In the end, we shall question to what extent synthesized images may be appropriate as expressions of creative exploration of semiotic dimensions in which thoughts create transits and expansions of their own connections

The objective of this doctorate thesis is to present a mathematics teaching project in which an experimental environment integrates the disciplines Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The development and analysis of the teachers and students’ actions are based on the Charles Sanders Pierce’s theory (1839-1914). According to the Peircean theory, understanding a phenomenon relies on a triad – Firstness, Secondness and Thirdness – and knowledge is built on experience. The learning stages Perceiving/Relating/Conceptualizing present in the Piercean theory of interpretants guided the investigation of the students’ learning mathematical and scientific concepts. The mathematics contents (a) length measuring, (b) column graphics making and reading, (c) scale, (d) concepts of space (boundary, localization and geometric forms) and estimate were taught to 32 9-year-old schoolchildren from a state school, using plant beds as a real environment where coexistence and competition between living beings are easily seen. In the Natural Science classes, measuring, estimating, representing and interpreting skills are used as tools for doing and analyzing experiments and graphics representing the phenomena studied. These skills were developed from the students’ interpreting the mathematical signs learned in the study of measures and data analysis. The mathematics teaching project designed in this thesis produced effective interpretants (emotional, energetic and logical). Thus the signifying process (Perceiving/Relating/Conceptualizing) took place due to the students’ drawing inferences on the abductive/inductive/deductive levels which could be noted in their interpreting the objects studied. We show that learning mathematical concepts and their signification are beyond representations and involve integrating mathematical, linguistic and scientific symbols.

Resumen
I develop a theory of learning grounded in Charles Peirce’s semiotics. This endeavour comes in the context of the iconic (phenomenological) turn in semiotics, which resulted in a Peircean renaissance, and of the growing semiotic trend in education. Peirce’s semiotics offers insights into the phenomenon of learning and contains an implicit philosophy of education. The application of Peirce’s phenomenological categories to education reveals the semiosic character of education. Learning, education, and research constitute a triad, having the structure of a sign (phenomenon of signification). As such, they are correspondingly governed by Peirce’s three criteria of evolution: chance, necessity, and love. Therefore, Peirce’s theory of education can only be understood in the context of his theory of evolution. I develop three central arguments: (1) that according to Peirce’s taxonomy of signs, learning is the evolution of signification from the Icon sign type to the Argument sign type, (2) that learning is the Universe’s way of discovering itself through life forms, thus being both an evolutionary factor and an explanation for the emergence of life and (3) that learning can only be fulfilled in self-denying love for the other. Using Peirce’s taxonomy of signs I analyse the student/teacher relation, explaining how the passage from Icon to Argument proceeds and how learning is fulfilled in self-denying love.

Resumen
This article discusses the recognition of semiotics experience and olfactory experienced by consumers in Farm brand’s physical store environment, so that it can be achieved the goal of conceptualizing the consumer olfactory design experience within the environment aroma of the brand from the semiotic point of view and the ecosystem approach to communication. In this sense, the theoretical background involves studying and researching of languages, representations and aesthetic communication from an ecosystem perspective, according to authors Monteiro (2011) and Pereira (2012), Peirce’s semiotics and the semiotics of culture, theory the affordances Gibson (1979) and Morin’s complex thought (2008). The developed research is qualitative, empirical and exploratory nature, it has having been used in its methodology techniques by Moraes and Mont'Alvão (2010) as a basis for modeling Farm brand’s communication ecosystem, as well as systematic observation Gil (2010) to collect data on the environment selected as analysis system target. The development of the research took place in the physical store of Farm brand, located in Shopping Manauara, placed in Manaus city, within the Graduate Program in Communication Sciences - PPGCCOM, from Federal University of Amazonas - UFAM. The main results can be mentioned the presentation of communication complexity of the brand studied through systematic analysis of their contact points and the subsequent location of the physical store environment and the aroma within this ecosystem, so that they can understand the process of management of intangible presence in the consumer experience organized with the aim and achieve the emotional and sensory consumer’s memory. Resumen
The objective of this paper is to discuss the inferential logics of sense attribution to everyday objects. The arguments presented take part of a broader investigation that aims at evolving a full methodological research framework. Such framework intends to explore the possibility of development of a method of systematic analysis of the relationship established between users and objects in their context of use and specific circumstances. The starting point of the discussion is the pragmatistic maxim: “Consider what effects, that might conceivably have practical bearing, we conceive the object of our conception to have. Then, our conception of these effects is the whole of our conception of the object” (Peirce, CP 4.402). Both terms, effects and practical bearing, associated with the concept of sense, were of great importance to support the evolvement of the theoretical discourse developed in the paper. In addiction, the concept of sense adopted is also rooted in Peirce’s essays: “Our idea of anything is our idea of its sensible effects” (Peirce, CP 5.401). According to Peirce, the senses of any sign (e.g., objects) are associated with all possible effects and the practical consequences that they produce or could produce (Zingale & Domingues, 2015). Thus, considering that signs can be also understood as processes of mental mediation, the practical bearings urged by sensible effects are direct linked to inferential logic mechanisms (induction, deduction, abduction) in the processes of sense attribution. Then, how to analyze intangible aspects such interpretative answers and practical consequences in the context of use and specific circumstances? The statements contained in the paper may contribute to the fields of design (practical) and semiotics and design (theoretical) in terms of providing a theoretical model. Such model intends to increase the scientific understanding of the logical mediation processes involved in artifacts fruition, which is believed to have effects on the practical processes of analysis and development of goods; and may also add knowledge to the discussions and contributions postulated by Deni (2015) and Boztepe (2007).Concluding, this contribution may bring into the field of design discussions on the comprehension of the relationship between users and their goods, introducing a purpose of a framing method of the logic of the pragmatistic dimension of artifacts. In further stages of the so-called broader investigation, the evolvement of such method aims at aiding the analyses and introduction of symbolic features into artifacts in the very early stages of design.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/IFDP.2016.3214

Resumen
A technical problem is identified and needs to be visualised through developing a graphic model and completing drawings. The basic knowledge of the writing and reading technical drawings is learnt in the Engineering Graphics course. In this paper drawings are treated as semiotic signs applying Peirce´s triadic model of representation. The representation of an object (future product) can take different forms: icons, indexes and symbols. On the other hand, for the image of an object, there must be three modes: iconic relation - firstness, indexical relation – secondness, and symbolic relation – thirdness. Various forms of graphic representation of the spur gear, i.e. icon, index and symbol, are presented.
