Plastic packaging waste has become a key consumer concern. In the UK, over 2.2 million tonnes of plastic packaging enter the consumer market each year. Much of this is used in the food sector because plastic packaging is cheap, light to transport, hygienic, and can be used to extend the product's shelf-life. In the UK around 46% of plastic packaging is collected for recycling, mostly through local authority collections. However several issues with the current systems of plastics recycling persist. Today, it is impossible to imagine life without plastics due to their flexible characteristics. However, the attractive characteristics of plastic in several industries are generating another global problem: waste plastic disposal. According to the “OECD Global Plastic Outlook” published in 2022, global plastic waste production increased by more than 2.25 times between 2000 and 2019 to 353.3 million tons (MMT). However, only 9% of that plastic waste is recycled.

Resumen
Recent literature on the role of plastics in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was analyzed. Despite contributing to the accomplishment of at least 15 SDGs, plastic pollution, especially marine pollution, outweighs the positive contribu tions of plastic to accomplishing the 2030 Agenda. The study, however, emphasized the vital importance of the circular economy, highlighting practices such as recycling as viable solutions to the socio-environmental problems that may be created by plastics.
