This paper presents an evaluation of five translations into Brazilian Portuguese of the poem “Still I Rise” by African-American author Maya Angelou (1928-2014). Chapter Three begins with analysis of the function of the American West in J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye (1951). The chapter goes on to reveal that Salinger’s literary depictions of Nature are significantly informed by the Americanised translations of Chinese and Japanese philosophical texts that he was studying from as early as 1946. The chapter uncovers the sources of translated Taoism to which Salinger was exposed, revealing that the translators Salinger mentions by name in his literary fiction all markedly foreground the role of Nature in their ‘American versions’ of classical Chinese and Japanese texts. Chapter Three then applies this research in close readings of two of Salinger’s later long stories, ‘Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters’ (1955) and ‘Seymour: An Introduction’ (1959), and offers a new reading of The Catcher in the Rye. These ecocritical readings expose the substantial influence of the ‘American versions’ of Taoist texts that Salinger studied on his literary depictions of an infinite and ecological Nature.

Chapter Four develops the previous chapter’s investigation into the substantial influence of translated Chinese and Japanese philosophical writing on presentations of an ecological Nature in Cold War American literature. However, it differs in its countercultural focus, exploring the influence of Americanised translations of Chinese and Japanese literature and philosophy on the work of the Beat Generation writers Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. Ginsberg and Kerouac’s extensive correspondence reveals the two writers’ developing interest in Taoist and Zen Buddhist thought, and their co-development of their own Americanised and highly inauthentic ‘Beat Zen’, which was heavily influenced by Dwight Goddard’s A Buddhist Bible (1932). Taking these letters as its starting point, the chapter reveals that translated Taoism and Zen Buddhism informed each writer’s ecological depictions of the human relationship to Nature in some of their most famous contributions to Beat literature, including Kerouac’s The Dharma Bums (1958) and Ginsberg’s “Howl” (1956).

Mei Niang (1916-2013) enjoyed the longest career amongst those in Manchukuo’s “Manchurian writer group.” The century spanning Mei Niang's life witnessed dramatic, transformative change for both China and the world, and her experiences evoke a richly colourful, complex, and confusing history marked by political tensions. This chapter analyses important elements of the woman writer's professional career – from her use of local Northeastern words, Chinese translations of Japanese literature, and her award-winning novel Crabs. It argue that her fictional production during imperial Japan's occupation was not colonial per se but, rather, should be considered within the context of an extraordinary young woman’s experience of surviving colonialism and her perceptions of it.

This paper focuses on specific concepts and modes of translation practised during late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century China. Its Author does not argue for the uniqueness of a ‘Chinese Translation Studies system’ but asks critically why European scholars of Translation Studies sometimes show a lack of ‘empathetic imagination’ in accepting the contributions of Chinese protagonists to the field of Translations Studies. The paper suggests that one reason for this kind of negative attitude might be the belated arrival of the ‘iconic turn’ in the West. The last part of the paper examines the relations between translators and the socio-political developments in China as well as their identity as world-citizens.

Despite the author’s bourgeois class background and the subject matter of his writings, Stefan Zweig’s novellas were among the very few foreign-language works that were still published under Mao Zedong’s strict communist rule. Analyzing the rhetoric of the academic articles and commentaries published with the translations, this chapter traces the trajectories of Chinese perspectives on Stefan Zweig’s works after the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949 and until the 2000s. Declaring Zweig’s novellas to be socio-critical literature, Chinese critics had developed a strategy during the Hundred Flowers Campaign of 1956 to make the writer acceptable to his communist censors. According to their interpretation, Zweig’s works fiercely attack the moral decay, emptiness, hypocrisy and brutality of bourgeois society in which women, in particular, suffer. Even after the Mao era came to an end, this way of reading Zweig’s novellas has persisted. Comparing European and North American narratives on Zweig that construct him as an “apolitical” and “nostalgic” writer, the Chinese reception in fact reveals an important socio-critical impetus, especially of the “women novellas,” that has been ignored in Western academia so far.
