Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is the dominant mode of atmospheric intraseasonal variability and the cornerstone for subseasonal prediction of extreme weather events. Climate modeling and prediction of MJO remain a big challenge, partially due to lack of understanding the MJO diversity. Here, we delineate observed MJO diversity by cluster analysis of propagation patterns of MJO events, which reveals four archetypes: standing, jumping, slow eastward propagation, and fast eastward propagation. Each type exhibits distinctive east-west asymmetric circulation and thermodynamic structures. Tight co

In aircraft engineering, an increase of internal pressure in a hydraulic pipe increases the probability of pipe damage, leading to crack propagation becoming a serious issue. In this study, the extended finite element method (XFEM) is applied to simulate initial crack propagation in hydraulic pipes and to investigate the influence factors. Stress intensity factors are extracted to verify the mesh independence of XFEM, which is based on the level set method and unit decomposition method. A total of 30 finite element models of hydraulic pipes with cracks are established. The distribution of von

Radical polymerisation (RP) has for many years been an industrially important process, and the kinetics of the process remains an active area of research. As polymerisation proceeds, converting monomer (small molecules) into polymer (long chain molecules), chemical species of a variety of chain lengths are produced. Recent work has pointed toward the fact that rate coefficients for polymerisation reactions (specifically, termination and propagation) are often dependent on the chain-length of the reacting species. The focus of this thesis is to study the effects of chain-length-dependent reacti

Starting with Casimir-Polder effect to understand interactions of metals and dielectrics at near-atomic distance scale, it stretches to larger wavelengths to explore optomechanics and its ability for energy exchange and signal transduction between PHz and GHz. This range is explored with near-quantum sensitivity limits. The chapter also develops the understanding phononic bandgaps, and for photons, it explores the use of energetic coupling for useful devices su

Resumen
In this chapter, we model by Finite Element Method (FEM) the Lamb waves' propagation and their interactions with symmetric and asymmetric delamination in sandwich skin. Firstly, a theoretical model is established to obtain the equation of lamb modes propagation. Secondly, dispersion curves are plotted using Matlab program for the laminate [0]4. The simulations were then carried out using ABAQUS CAE by exciting the fundamental A0 Lamb mode in the frequency 300 kHz. The delamination was then estimated by analyzing the signal picked up at two sensors using two techniques: Two Dimensional Fast Fourier Transform (2D-FFT) to identify the propagating and converted modes, and Wavelet Transform (WT) to measure the arrival times. The results showed that the mode A0 is sensible to symmetric and asymmetric delamination. Besides, based on signal changes with the delamination edges, a localization method is proposed to estimate the position and the length of the delamination. In the last section, an experimental FEM verification is provided to validate the proposed method.

Resumen
Noise from the detector and source is always considered in a system design study. However, as an optical field propagates, it acquires additional noise and background radiance from the path defined by the source and by the field of view of the detector. This is typically in the form of propagation path emission and background emission, and bulk scattering within the propagation medium and surface scattering at the propagation medium boundaries of hot-object radiation (e.g., the sun) into the sensor field of view. In many cases this severely limits system performance. Also, in a passive system when no source is present, the background radiance is the signal of interest. Path emission can be modeled by the radiation transfer equation given by Eq. 2.85a. The source function, ℘+(s), must now be given an explicit representation. Figure 11.1 illustrates the incremental emittance per incremental length and bandwidth along an optical path in thermal equilibrium.

Resumen
Abstract.—Juvenile paddlefish Polyodon spathula exhibit conspicuous variation in the shape of their rostra and caudal fins. We quantified morphological variation for a composite collection of young-of-year paddlefish (N = 55; 61.9–403.7 mm total length) using nine measurements of the rostrum, body, and caudal fin. Sheared principal component analysis of morphological data resulted in three distinct groups of fish corresponding to three different localities: hatchery-reared fish from the Mermentau River, Louisiana; hatchery-reared fish from the Tombigbee River, Alabama; and field-collected fish from the Mississippi River, Mississippi. Series were segregated from each other based on size of caudal lobes and width of rostrum. With increased body size of fish, relative length of rostrum increased, and mesal expansion of rostrum increased for all three series. For Tombigbee and Mississippi River series, with increased size of fish, caudal asymmetry decreased. Overall, smaller fish had shorter, narrower rostra and highly asymmetrical caudal lobes; larger fish had longer, broader rostra and more symmetrical caudal lobes. Morphological differences among series were most conspicuous for fish greater than 85 mm eye-to-fork length. Fish from Mermentau River had shorter, narrower (leaf-shaped) rostra and asymmetrical (conspicuously heterocercal) caudal lobes. Those from the Tombigbee River had longer, broader (spoon-shaped) rostra and more symmetrical caudal lobes. Those from the Mississippi River had the longest, broadest (paddle-shaped) rostra and symmetrical (superficially “homocercal”) caudal lobes. Locality-based gradient in paddlefish morphology corresponds to a gradient in river hydrology: longer, broader rostra and symmetrical caudal lobes were associated with larger basins, higher gradients, and greater discharge.

Resumen
Abstract.—Paddlefish Polyodon spathula sport fisheries are managed and regulated in a number of differing ways. We review paddlefish sport regulations imposed by state agencies in 2006 throughout the species range and describe changes in regulations and management that have occurred from 1983 to 2006. Paddlefish sport fisheries occurred in 17 states in 1983, compared to 15 states in 2006. Common methods of management include seasons, creel limits, length limits, and quota systems. Eleven states managed paddlefish with open seasons sometime between January to June, 14 states had creel limits of typically of one or two fish, four states set length limits, and four states operated under tag-based quota systems. Culling or high grading was only allowed by six states in 2006, and all six had season restrictions. While paddlefish have become increasingly managed since 1983, there is little peer-reviewed published literature available documenting the affects of regulations on paddlefish populations, and further research is needed. Because paddlefish are known to move large distances (>1,900 km) when connected waterways exist, management on a biologically relevant scale of connected paddlefish populations should continue to be considered.

Abstract.—The paddlefish Polyodon spathula snag fishery, jointly managed by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks, on the Missouri River from Gavins Point Dam near Yankton, South Dakota (river mile [rm] 811 [river kilometer {rkm} 1,305]) to the mouth of the Big Sioux River near Sioux City, Iowa (rm 734) has undergone many changes over the past 50 years. Changes in season length and harvest regulations were aimed at reducing overall paddlefish harvest and altering the population structure. This snagging season has evolved from an open, year-round fishery with liberal daily and possession limits to a 30-d limited-entry season with a conservative number of harvest tags issued by lottery drawing in 1997. Angler interest continues to increase as indicated by the increasing number of applicants for harvest tags. There was no difference in total fishing use or mean hours snagged per angler; however, South Dakota anglers were more likely to fish weekdays and in the Gavins Point Dam tailwater than Nebraska anglers. No differences were found between the number of fish harvested or the harvest rate among Nebraska and South Dakota anglers from 1997 through 2006. Total harvest, harvest rates and the number of paddlefish caught and released dramatically increased in 2004–2006. Response of the paddlefish population to regulation changes has been positive. There has been a significant increase in mean length of paddlefish sampled with nets from 1991 to 2005 (r2 = 0.73), and significant increases in both proportional stock density (r2= 0.78) and relative stock density of preferred length fish (r2 = 0.57) from 1982 to 2005. The success of joint management of this interjurisdictional paddlefish snag fishery was the result of angler input, population and harvest monitoring, mutual regulation changes, and cooperation from both state agencies.

Resumen
Abstract.—We present information on delayed mortality of commercially exploited paddlefish Polyodon spathula released as bycatch in Kentucky Lake, Tennessee–Kentucky, an impoundment on the lower Tennessee River. Minimum size limits enacted in 2002 (864 mm eye-to-fork length [EFL]) and 2005 (914 mm EFL) sought to protect paddlefish from overfishing. In 2005, bycatch of sublegal paddlefish represented 75% of the total catch, and releasing undersized fish will not reduce fishing mortality unless those fish survive. Paddlefish caught and released by commercial fishers in 2005 and 2006 were externally tagged with radio transmitters and tracked a minimum of 2 weeks to estimate delayed mortality. Four of the 104 tagged paddlefish died following release, 94 survived, and 6 were censored because their fate could not be determined. Paddlefish that survived moved rapidly from release locations. Net movements of the 94 fish that survived averaged 12.0 km (SE = 5.3) upriver and ranged from 91.5 km downriver to 390.0 km upriver. Fish that died could not be distinguished from fish that lived on the basis of mean water temperature, fish length, net-soak time, or handling time. Given the low delayed mortality of discarded paddlefish, imposing minimum size limits is a reasonable approach to reduce fishing mortality of juveniles and reduce the likelihood of overfishing. Efforts to reduce fishing mortality should focus on avoiding fishing gear and seasons (e.g., early fall and late spring) that cause high initial bycatch mortality.
