Resumen
We developed a highly accurate and fully Maxwellian conformal mapping method for calculation of main fields of electrostatic particle optical elements. A remarkable advantage of this method is the possibility of rapid recalculations with geometric asymmetries and mispowered plates. We used this conformal mapping method to calculate the multipole terms of the high voltage quadrupoles in the storage ring of the Muon [Formula: see text] Experiment (FNAL-E-0989). Next, we demonstrate that an effect where the observed tunes correspond to a voltage that is about [Formula: see text] higher compared to the voltage to which the Muon [Formula: see text] quadrupoles are set is explained by the conceptual and quantitative differences between the beam optics quadrupole voltage and the quadrupole voltage at the plates. Completing the methodological framework for field computations, we present a method for extracting multipole strength falloffs of a particle optical element from a set of Fourier mode falloffs. We calculated the quadrupole strength falloff and its effective field boundary (EFB) for the Muon [Formula: see text] quadrupole, which has explained the experimentally measured tunes, while simple estimates based on a linear model exhibited discrepancies up to [Formula: see text].

Resumen
The luminosity [Formula: see text] of colliding beams in a storage ring such as CEPC depends strongly on [Formula: see text], the half-length of the free space centered on the intersection point (IP). [Formula: see text] is also the length from the IP to the front edges of the two near-in quadrupoles that are focusing the counter-circulating beams to the IP spot. The detector length cannot, therefore, exceed [Formula: see text]. Since [Formula: see text] increases strongly with decreasing [Formula: see text], there is incentive for reducing [Formula: see text]; but this requires the detector to be shorter than desirable. This paper proposes a method for integrating these adjacent quadrupoles into the particle detector to retain (admittedly degraded) active particle detection of those forward going particles that would otherwise be obscured by the quadrupole. A gently conical quadrupole shape is more natural for merging the quadrupole into the particle detector than is the analytically exact cylindrical shape. This is true whether or not the calorimeter is integrated. It will be the task of accelerator physicists to determine the extent to which deviation from the pure quadrupole field compromises (or improves) accelerator performance. Superficially, both the presence of strongest gradient close to the IP and largest aperture farther from the IP seem to be advantageous. A tentative design for this merged, quadrupole-calorimeter is given.

Resumen
In this work, we performed the ab initio calculation of quadrupolar parameters of 17O and 14N atoms in FeIII-protoporphyrin IX (FeIII-PPIX) and β-hematin molecules. Furthermore, the quadrupole splitting of iron atoms in these molecules were calculated. The calculations were carried out to explore the differences between the electronic structures of FeIII-PPIX and β-hematin. The results show that the value of quadrupole splitting of iron atom, Δ(57Fe), in FeIII-PPIX is exactly three-fold of its value in β-hematin. The electric field gradient (EFG) at the site of quadrupolar nuclei were calculated to obtain quadupolar parameters (χ, η, and Δ), using B3LYP method and an all-electron representation for iron (62111111/3311111/3111), as well as the 6-31G* basis for all other atoms.Key words: nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), hematin, β-hematin, malaria.

Resumen
Increasing the level of semiconductor devices, improving their characteristics significantly affects the potential stability in a wide range of frequencies. Classical methods and standard measuring equipment are not designed to measure the parameters of potentially unstable transistors. Measuring systems are excited uncontrollably, which increases the measurement error. Therefore, today there is an urgent task of measuring the parameters of both transistors in particular and quadrupoles in general, in the frequency range of potential instability. The clock frequency at which modern computer equipment works is close to the microwave range (ultrahigh frequencies), which makes the problem of measuring and calculating the various functional units of the computer quite relevant. The development of new methods and means of measuring the parameters of potentially unstable quadrupoles in the microwave range is an important scientific field that can significantly improve the accuracy of their measurement on standard equipment. The conducted researches and the developed technique allow to increase accuracy of measurement of parameters of four-poles and to provide stability of experimental installation at measurement of parameters of any four-pole. The proposed methods are more efficient and solve the problem of measuring the S-parameters of potentially unstable quadrupoles in the microwave range. The parameters of the quadrupole have the dimensions of the elements of standard W-parameters, their measurements are performed in the microwave range with an error of less than 5%, and to a lesser extent depends on the coefficient of stability of the measuring path than when measuring S-parameters. When measuring the parameters of the quadrupole, there is no need to use the modes of short circuit and XX or make measurements with a coordinated measuring path, which allows to increase the measurement accuracy and ensure stability when measuring potentially unstable quadrupoles with Ks> 0.

Resumen
With quadrupolar excitation of ions by a small auxiliary RF field, the first stability region of the quadrupole mass filter splits into islands of stability. This study is of the first upper island, “A”. We calculate the location of this island for different values of the excitation parameter, q‘. Ion trajectory calculations are used to study the influence of the input fringing fields and the separation time. The Runge-Kutta–Nustrom–Dormand-Prince (RK–N–DP) method of order 6(7) is used for integration of the equations of ion motion. It is found that a weak auxiliary RF signal improves the peak shape for quadrupole mass filters that have weak field distortions.

Resumen
Abstract The indirect multipole interactions of nuclei and impurity paramagnetic ions in metals and alloys via conduction electrons are investigated by means of the dielectric function method. The Hamiltonian of the indirect quadrupole-quadrupole interaction of impurity paramagnetic ions and nuclei is constructed selfconsistently, taking into account the exchange interactions and correlations of the conduction electrons as well as the antishielding effects. It is shown that the energy of these indirect quadrupole interactions of the nuclei and the paramagnetic ions decreases with the distance as R ~ 3 , oscillating with a period which is determined by the wave vector on the Fermi surface and the distance R. The influence of these indirect quadrupole-quadrupole interactions on the width and shape of the NMR lines is studied.

The Level Mixing Spectroscopy method allows to measure the eletric quadrupole moments of high spin isomeric nuclear states (10ns < t < 100ms) produced in nuclear reactions. The magnetic interaction is usualy created by an intense external magnetic field. The eletric quadrupole interaction can be created by recoi-implantation of the nuclei in non-cub crystals, used as hosts. The external magnetic field can then be replaced by the hiperfine fields of ferromagnetic materials, controling its intensity by temperature variation. The purpose of the research performed for this work is to verify the viability of this replacement. We adapt the LEMS method to be used in the Pelletron Laboratory. We choose the isomeric state at 398 KeV exitation energy in the 69Ge nucleus as a test case, because it has all nuclear properties well known (half-life, spin, magnetic moment, eletric quadrupole moment). It was produced by the 56Fe(16O, 2pn)69Ge reaction, with a 16O beam at 53 MeV, and implanted and stopped in a Gadolinium host, which is a ferromagnet from low temperatures up to Tc=289 K. We measure the anisotropy of the emitted gama ray as a function of the temperature of the host. The comparison of this measurement with another of the anisotropy as a function of an external magnetic field strength, done by the Leuven/Belgium group, show us two possibilities. In the first, we suppose that the eletric interaction is cosntant and independent of temprature and we obtain an anomalous magnetic hyperfine field for Gd. In the second one, we obtain a hyperfine field that follows the magnetization if we assume eletric field gradientes that are temperature dependent. New measurements by using Gd monocrystal and the TDPAD (Time Diferencial Perturbed Angular Distribution) method may solve this ambiguity.

Resumen
The focus of this thesis is to derive analytical tools for the design of infrared nondestructive tests in single and multi layer material bodies. This requires the predetermination of the parameters of the experiment such that the infrared image has the required resolution for defect detection. Inverse heat conduction in single and multi-layer materials is investigated to determine the required frequency of excitation in order to obtain a desired temperature at the observation point. We use analytical quadrupole representation to derive a polynomial relation to estimate the frequency of the periodic excitation as a function of the temperature amplitude at a given observation point within the body. The formula includes characteristic geometric and material parameters of the system. The polynomial formula can be an e ective design tool for quick frequency predetermination in the design of non-destructive testing experiments with infrared thermography. The convergence and accuracy of the formula is assessed by comparison with the analytical thermal quadrupole solution and experimental results. We also investigate the e ect of the nite length of the material domain in order to establish the range of applicability of a simpli ed formula based on semi-in nite domain assumption. The e ect of nite length is investigated analytically by using (i) Fourier series which accounts for transients and (ii) Time varying solution associated to the steady state solution when a purely periodic excitation is applied. These results are also compared with numerical solution obtained with commercial nite element software ANSYSTM.

Moradian, Annie. "New methods of mass analysis with quadrupoles with added octopole fields". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/367.

Texto completo
Resumen
Mass selective axial ejection of ions and mass analysis with a stability island with linear quadrupoles with added octopole fields are described. With mass selective axial ejection, quadrupoles with 2.0% and 2.6% added octopole fields have been tested and compared to a conventional quadrupole. The effects of trapping ions at different q values, excitation voltage, scan direction, balanced and unbalanced rf voltages on the rods, and dc applied between the rods have been investigated. The highest scan speeds and highest resolution are obtained with resonant excitation and ejection at high q (q = 0.8). With axial ejection, the quadrupole with a 2.0% added octopole field provides mass resolution and ejection efficiencies similar to a conventional rod set. Quadrupole, dipole and simultaneous dipole-dipole excitation between the x and y rod pairs were compared and no advantage was found with quadrupole or dipole-dipole excitation. The effects of scan speed were investigated and a resolution at half height of about 1600 is possible at scan speeds up to 5000 Th/s. Mass analysis using islands of stability was investigated with a quadrupole with2.0% added octopole field. The island of stability is formed with auxiliary excitation. The experiments confirm the predictions of the simulations. With the resolving dc applied to the quadrupole so that the Mathieu parameter a>0, conventional mass analysis with applied rf and dc and no auxiliary excitation is possible. In this case use of an island of stability yields similar peak shape and resolution. However with the polarity of the resolving dc reversed so that a<0, only very low resolution can be obtained; the added octopole prevents conventional mass analysis. By using a stability island when a<0, the resolution is substantially improved.

Resumen
The aim of this paper is to document the development of a method for detectionand quantification of Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in soil using GasChromatography (GC) connected to a Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer (MS) via aninternal standard (CB189). The method developed is performed in conjunction withthe information provided by the Swedish environmental agency (Svenskanaturvårdsverket, SNV) in regards to PCB limits for sensitive land usage. The steps ofthe method and maintenance of the GC/MS are used to create a user manual andan attempt at transformative learning is done in an effort to teach the staff atLjungaLab AB so that at the very least, independent analysis can be run and at best, new methods and application are independently developed for the GC/MS. Anevaluation of the teaching efforts is also done to assess what grade of learning isachieved.

This chapter is devoted to one of key phenomena in the field of spin physics, namely, resonant absorption of electromagnetic waves under conditions where the Zeeman splitting of spin levels in magnetic field is equal to photon energy. This method is particularly important for identification of nuclear spin effects, because resonance spectra provide fingerprints of different involved spin species and make it possible to distinguish different nuclear isotopes. As discussed in this chapter the nuclear magnetic resonance provides also an access to local magnetic fields acting on nuclear spins. These fields are caused by the magnetic interactions between the nuclei and by the quadrupole splittings of nuclear spin states in anisotropic crystalline environment. Manifestations of spin resonance in optical responses of semiconductors–that is, optically detected magnetic resonance–are discussed.

Resumen
Electrospinning is the most widely used production method for polymer fibers formed from an electrified fluid jet. This method is very versatile, relatively inexpensive and simple. When the sufficiently high electric potential (about 20kV) is applied to the polymer solution, the electrostatic forces overcome the surface tension of the polymer and a thin liquid jet is ejected from the nozzle. However, after short straight distance of the motion of the fiber it rapidly grows into an electric charge driven bending instability and results in a 3D spiraling trajectory leading to a very random deposition on the grounded collector. This significantly reduces the positive qualities of the fiber and its use in biomechanical engineering like a production of tissue scaffolds mimicking the structure of the extracellular matrix or a delivery of expandable chemo- and radio-therapeutic stents. In this work we present the initial results from investigating the feasibility of using dynamic focusing of the electrified jet in a linear quadrupole trap. This is a new alternative to the more generally used mechanical approach with rotating mandrel, could in principle lead to the ability to control the deposition location without the use of any moving components. The proposed approach was originally developed for trapping and transporting individual charged ions. In contrast to ions, an electrified continuous fiber represents an infinite degree of freedom system, with potentially much richer dynamics and unknown stability regions in the parameter space. In order to understand the dynamics of the fiber, we present a discretized 2D reduced-order mathematical model which is investigated numerically. The resulting ODEs represent multi-dimensional form of a non-linear Mathieu’s and Meissner’s differential equations for harmonic, and step excitation functions, respectively. The model parameters were obtained from static experiments with electrodes compressing the fibers in a single plane. Finite-element model of the electrodes resulted in detailed potential maps, which were used to develop estimates of the required strength of the electrostatic field needed to steer the fibers. The estimated parameters were used to obtain stable solutions of the reduced-order approximate of a spring-mass-charged dumbbell model of the fiber.

Resumen
Gas leakage between E-11 and E-15 std cc He/s can be measured by a helium accumulation method. The leak detector uses a quadrupole mass spectrometer with a minimum detectable partial pressure of 5E-15 torr. The mass spectrometer is attached to a small ultrahigh vacuum chamber constructed of stainless steel treated for a low hydrogen outgas rate of 2E-15 torr·liter/cm2·s. The chamber has a nozzle to which a test object can be attached. The chamber is also equipped with a non-evaporable getter (NEG) pump that pumps active gases but not noble gases such as helium. The purpose of the NEG and the ultra-low hydrogen outgas feature of the chamber is to maintain low background pressure and high sensitivity of the quadrupole during helium accumulation. Helium tracer gas coming through a defective seal or material is accumulated in this chamber for a few minutes, and the rate of rise of the helium signal is compared with that of a calibrated reference leak. In this manner, leakage down to 1E-15 std cc He/s can be measured with a good confidence factor.

Resumen
A numerical investigation is carried out to predict the noise radiated from high Reynolds number incompressible flow over the circular cylinder. The study focuses on the scattering effect of cylinder surface to the propagation of noise at different frequencies. A boundary integral equation which extends the acoustic analogy to predict the hydrodynamic noise scattered by the non-compact surface is employed. Methods of unsteady flow simulation and noise prediction are validated by the experimental data and analytical result, respectively. Computational results of the noise at different frequencies show that the diffraction of cylinder surface to low-frequency noise is equivalent to a compact dipole source, but the scattering effect to the high-frequency noise gives a trefoil-like pattern which is much different from the directivity pattern of both quadrupole and dipole sources. Moreover, the advantage of the method is to avoid the time-consuming volume integral, which has to be implemented by using theory of vortex sound and method of the tailored Green’s function.

Resumen
In-situ calibration methods using a single spherical-shaped transmitting hydrophone (idealized as a monopole acoustic source) have traditionally been used for radiated sound measurements of turbomachinery performed in the Garfield Thomas 1.22-m diameter water tunnel located at The Pennsylvania State University’s Applied Research Laboratory (ARL Penn State). In this reverberant field, the monopole source containing known transmitting characteristics was used to calibrate acoustic sensors that were either near or far from the source. This method typically works well when the type of source is monopole in nature; however, many acoustics sources can be dipole or quadrupole in nature. In this study we investigated the applicability of using dipole sources in a space such as a well-characterized reverberant tank, and we found through a virtual dipole method that the radiation still appears monopole in the reverberant field. The method was extended for the vibration of a panel (a known dipole source) and once again the monopole assumption for the in-situ calibration for a near-field hydrophone and conventional reverberant hydrophones remained consistent.
