Resumen
Media provide students and teachers with creative as well as practical ideas and enable them to meet various interests and needs, hence, this study analysed the implementation of using media particularly radio programme to improve students’ speaking ability. This study employed descriptive qualitative approach and there were 42 students of senior high school involved in this study. The results indicate that the implementation of media (radio talk show programme) assists students to improve their speaking ability; it can be one of methods in teaching and learning process especially in speaking class; and the influence of media (radio talk show programme) could encourages and motivates students to pull out their best of communication skill particularly in using English.

Resumen
This exploratory investigation studies the presence of journalists as advertising endorsers in news or talk radio stations when a mention or testimonial is embedded within programme, the characteristics of these advertisements, and the degree of their involvement with the message and the product and brand. The research analysed all programming contents from a sample of national stations, focusing on type, subject and length of endorsement, role of endorser, and frequency of brand mention and call to action. The results show that many cases do not respect the codes of conduct of the sector and bypass the distinction between editorial and commercial contents.

Resumen
Previous studies of Hebrew nu investigate this discourse marker in casual conversation. The current study explores nu on Israeli political phone-in radio programs and broadens our knowledge both about the functions and grammaticization processes of discourse markers and about some particularities of Israeli political talk radio. The comparison to casual talk reveals both qualitative and quantitative differences. In casual talk, the main function of nu is a sequential one – urging further development of an ongoing topic (69%). In the radiophonic data, the most common role of nu is as a keying token (53%), functioning in the affective realm. Furthermore, the talk-radio data show a wider variety of keys constructed by nu – which range from joking to sheer contempt – clustering closer towards the latter, in contrast to the case of casual talk, manifesting mostly the joking key. Structurally, whereas sequential functions are generally accomplished by stand-alone nu, affective tokens are accompanied by same-speaker talk. The analysis sheds new light on how a sequential token might come to function in the affective realm.

Resumen
Abstract Recent articles by prominent scholars of discourse and interaction have renewed the debate over the relationship between membership categorization analysis (MCA) and conversation analysis (CA). Many consider CA and MCA as mutually informing, and that is the position I take in this paper. MCA has been conducted mainly with monolingual data, but in this study I examine Hawaiian language media talk by multilingual speakers. Place formulation is often intertwined with membership categorization, and I investigate how place is used to categorize people. Taking an MCA approach, I analyze the stories co-constructed by a radio show’s host, guest, and callers, all of whom speak predominantly in Hawaiian but occasionally switch into English. The goals of the paper are twofold: (1) to illustrate the procedural consequentiality of initiating, maintaining, and terminating an “ultra-rich topic” (Sacks 1992: 75), that is, place; and (2) to show how place is used to do categorial work.

Resumen

The study investigated the practice of codeswitching within the Cape Flats speech community of Cape Town. Members of this speech community have always been exposed to both English and Afrikaans in formal as well as informal contexts. Due to constant exposure to both languages, as well as historical and political experiences, members of the speech community have come to utilize both languages within a single conversation and even within a single utterance. Codeswitching is an integral part of the community's speech behaviour. The main purpose of this research was to uncover and analyze the motivations behind codeswitching in the bilingual communities of Cape Town, while also providing a strong argument that codeswitching patterns evident in their speech do not always correspond completely with linguistic constraints that are regarded as 'universal'.

This conversation analytic study aims to describe how advice is re-issued in German in an institutional setting. Schank (1979) has shown that conversation during German advice programs consists of five different phases, one of which is the advice-giving phase. For the current study, four conversations from a radio advice program were analyzed. The data show that the advice-giving phase identified by Schank is further characterized by three sub-phases: 1) issuing of initial advice, 2) negotiation of rejected advice through reformulations of the initial advice, and 3) offer to move to the closing phase, done via generalization of the previously-given advice. I focus on the delivery of the second phase, in which the advice, previously rejected by the recipient, is re-issued using a number of discourse strategies on the part of the advice giver. These strategies include a change in recipient, a shift in source of the advice, the selection or change in reference (i.e. du ‘you’ vs. ich ‘I’), a change in advised action, and a change in strength. In selecting one of these identified discourse strategies, the advice giver addresses the reason for the rejection of the advice on which the reformulation is based. Finally, in looking at the third phase, I explain the function of generalizations and their role in situating the interlocutors interactionally within the larger advice-giving phase, thus sequencing the complex action (Schank, 1981).

Phénomène apparu à la fin des années quatre-vingt avec l’animateur Rush Limbaugh, le talk-show radiophonique conservateur américain a joué un rôle important dans la vie politique du pays. Cette recherche en retrace les différentes phases de 1988 à 2010 pour lui rendre sa place dans l’histoire politique américaine des dernières. Elle défend la thèse que le talk-show radiophonique conservateur a constitué un puissant instrument de contestation et a joué un rôle historique dans la reconquête du pouvoir par les Républicains.Dans un premier temps, le contexte politique et médiatique de la résurgence du conservatisme dans les années soixante est revisité pour situer le talk-show radiophonique dans la tradition communicationnelle du mouvement conservateur et défendre l’idée que l’émergence du phénomène en tant que force politique au début des années 1990 constitue « le deuxième rendez-vous des conservateurs avec les médias alternatifs »Dans un deuxième temps, la recherche se propose d’analyser les phases et cycles du talk-show conservateur dans son âge d’or ainsi que les figures de ses éditocrates dominants. Il s’agit d’établir que le contournement des médias de référence par le talk-show s’est opéré en tandem avec l’élite républicaine au moyen d’une « relation spéciale » qui s’est nouée au cours de la campagne présidentielle de 1992 et renforcée très nettement au cours du premier mi-mandat de Bill Clinton. Afin de définir ces phases, la recherche s’appuie sur Rush Limbaugh comme figure fondatrice du genre, puis se concentre sur Hannity, Ingraham et Savage, nouveaux animateurs d’envergure nationale qui émergent au tournant du siècle. Dans un dernier temps, la forme et le contenu du talk-show radiophonique sont explorés afin de mettre en évidence les modalités de la contestation. La thèse se concentre sur l’analyse du dispositif et la rhétorique des talk-shows à proprement parler, en se focalisant sur ceux qui ont façonné le genre et sa notoriété. Elle analyse le discours des quatre animateurs de manière comparative afin de montrer que les talk-shows radiophoniques conservateurs déploient une stratégie de « contenu sur mesure »
A new media genre that appeared in the late eighties, conservative talk radio in the US has played a significant role in the country’s politics. This research explores the history of the medium from 1988 to 2010. It argues that, throughout the period, conservative talk radio has been a powerful instrument of dissent and has played a very significant role in the Republican ascendancy of the mid-1990s. First, this research revisits the political and media context of the resurgence of conservatism in the 1960s in order to situate the genre in the communication tradition of the conservative movement and entertain the argument that the emergence of conservative talk radio as a political force in the early nineties represents “conservatives’ second rendezvous with alternative media.”Second, this dissertation analyses the phases of conservative talk radio during its golden age as well as its dominant pundits. It argues that conservative talk radio shows circumvented traditional media by establishing a “special relationship” with the Republican establishment as early as Bill Clinton’s first presidential campaign in 1992. In order to define such phases, this research focuses on Rush Limbaugh as the founding figure of the genre and then concentrates on Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham and Michael Savage, the new hosts who emerged at the turn of the century. Last, the form and content of conservative talk radio programs are explored in order to show how dissent is engineered. This research then analyzes the apparatus and rhetoric of the programs, focusing on those that shaped the genre and made it famous. It explores the content of the four shows comparatively in order to demonstrate that the hosts unfurl a strategy of “tailored content.”

I den här uppsatsen undersöks interaktionen mellan tre programledare och en intervjuad forskare i ett utdrag från ett intervjusamtal i radio. Syftet med studien är att undersöka vilka övergripande topiker och vilka kommunikativa projekt som förekommer i samtalsutdraget. Likaså att undersöka hur de kommunikativa projekten kan relateras till den hybriditet som detta samtalsutdrag kännetecknas av, då samtale tkan kategoriseras som en hybridiserad pratshowintervju. Samtalsdelen består av drygt åtta minuter, som transkriberas och analyseras med hjälp av en topikanalys i kombination med en analys av de kommunikativa projekt som florerar i samtalsutdraget. Resultatet av analysen visar att samtalsutdraget innehåller olika kommunikativa projekt som ibland kolliderar. Programledarna vill ha svar på sina mestadels enkla och grundläggande frågor, men forskaren svarar inte alltid enkelt och grundläggande. Forskaren är där för att beskriva omständigheterna kring hundraårsjubileet av upptäckten av kosmisk strålning, i egenskap av elementarpartikelfysiker. Programledarna är beroende av att deras lyssnare tycker att innehållet är intressant och värt att lyssna på. Därför hamnar det på deras lott att så gott de kan göra programinnehållet intressant för lyssnarna. För att uppfylla det tillkommer lokala projekt, såsom att förmå den intervjuade att vara mer personlig och göra ansatser för att ge samtalet en mer vardaglig och avslappnad prägel. Till exempel genom det sätt som de ställer frågor till forskaren. Men även den journalistsiska uppgiften att popularisera vetenskapen som forskaren intervjuas om tillkommer, då det rör sig om ett radioprogram inom sektorn för Public service.

Não é raro encontrar na televisão brasileira, e mesmo na rádio, emissões que trazem depoimentos de pessoas comuns comentados por especialistas, sobretudo, psicólogos. Desentendimentos conjugais, problemas com filhos, desavenças com vizinhos, conflitos no trabalho, são alguns dos temas exibidos. Trata-se de versões cujo formato orienta também produções estadunidenses, europeias e latino-americanas, cuja temática, apropriada pela indústria cultural nacional, difunde um discurso terapêutico. Embora as ideias de manipulação dos participantes e de sensacionalismo na busca por audiência sejam justificativas para a veiculação desse tipo de emissão, existem outros sentidos que podem ser atribuídos quando se aproximam as razões que mobilizam pessoas a dar visibilidade a histórias e questões consideradas de foro íntimo. Foram esses outros sentidos aqui investigados. Uma abordagem, portanto, a partir dos participantes de No Divã do Gikovate (Rádio CBN), Casos de Família (SBT) e Márcia (Bandeirantes) norteou a pesquisa apresentada. A interação social no palco, nos bastidores e na plateia foram vias de acesso a dois grupos sociais envolvidos na produção e no consumo desses bens culturais. O estudo dessas interações apontou lógicas diferentes de produção: uma demanda espontânea, entre aqueles que integram as emissões animadas pelo Dr. Gikovate, e um sistema de produção da exibição, ou seja, uma cadeia produtiva por trás das emissões televisivas que abarca tanto profissionais formalmente contratados pelas emissoras quanto pessoas engajadas informalmente. Tais interações indicam ainda grupos que possuem universos mentais distintos, com repertórios expressivos e recursos afetivos específicos. Seus integrantes apropriam-se do discurso terapêutico difundido transformando-o em senso prático para sua vida afetiva.
Its not rare to find in Brazilian television and radio, transmissions that bring ordinary peoples testimonials commented by experts, mainly psychologists. Marital fights, problems with children, quarrels with neighbors are some of the themes presented. Those are Brazilian versions of programs which circulate around the United States reaching Latin American and European countries, which the thematic, taken by their own national culture industry, diffuses a therapeutic discourse. Although the participants ideas manipulation and the sensationalism in the quest for audience are explanations for placing this kind of transmission, there are other senses that may be attributed when one gets closer to the reasons that mobilize those people to bring out stories and affairs once considered intimate. These other senses were the ones studied here. Thus, an approach close to that of the participants of No Divã do Gikovate (Gikovates Divan, Radio CBN), Casos de Família (Family Affairs, SBT) and Márcia (Marcia, Bandeirantes) guided this research. The social interactions on stage and backstage were ways to reach these two social groups involved in the production and consumerism of these cultural products. The study of these interactions led to different logics of production: a spontaneous demand between those who compose the transmissions cheered by Dr. Gikovate, and a production system of exhibition, which means a productive chain behind the television transmissions that reach professionals formally hired by the networks and people informally involved. Those interactions have also indicated groups with different mental universes, with specific expressive repertoire and affective appeal. Their integrants employ the therapeutic discourse, transforming it into logic of practice to be used in their affective life.

This study examines talk-radio relations in advance of digitisation, testing the continuity of patterns of listener formation, to assess the accuracy of claims that 'interactivity' and individuated informational flows are demand-driven. Australian talk broadcasters are shown discursively creating a living 'thirdspace' or 'real virtuality' of transactional locations. Listener-caller participation arrays varying social orders across this imagined-yet-real terrain. Radio talk thus becomes a 'euphemised' form of social pre-dispositioning power, differentially locating power across communities. Four sets of talk-radio texts are examined in detail, using a socially contextualised form of linguistic analysis. Transcripts from 2UE's 'The Stan Zemanek Show' reveals an openly-gendered and more covertly classed discourse. The address to private rather than to public 'selves' in late-night sex-counselling talkback is examined. The study then examines programming from the community radio sector of volunteer-produced, local radio transmission. Finally, the study examines 'The prison show', a community radio music request and message programme for Aboriginal prisoners. The study concludes by suggesting that talk radio's role within cultural formation is complex in its articulations, but deeply implicated within the major cultural formational activities of contemporary consumer culture, on which are being modelled digital audio broadcasting's newly intensified flows of interactivity

Before the first broadcast of a black show in May 1946, a white local daily, the Times Picayune, identified the program in its radio schedule as the “Religious Forum.” After the first broadcast, the paper unilaterally changed the listing to “Negro Services,” effectively marginalizing the show. Approximately nine months later, WNOE attempted to change the talk show's time slot from 10 a.m.-10:15 a.m. Sundays to 11 a.m. Sundays. Taylor rebuffed. A wave of black support to keep the time slot poured into the station. Management relented. After approximately one year, Taylor changed the show's name to the “Negro Forum of the Air.” More muted Afrocentric topics, such as the significance of the black press, were added to the repertoire. As Taylor expanded to nearby cities and towns, white public officials sent notices to him warning against communist influence infiltrating his broadcasts.

The very notion of a radio documentary “fan” would have sounded weird at one time—back when the word documentary might have evoked thoughts of sonic Brussels sprouts. The producers who have done the most to change that, and to prompt talk of a new golden age, are the masters of the personal narrative. Several of our essayists have been at this since the 1980s or even the 1970s, but in the mid-1990s Ira Glass created a show devoted to the narrative and gave it a distinctly urban, and urbane, sensibility. As Ira makes clear, every story on This American Life has a point, a “moment of reflection,” a larger meaning of some sort. Some of those stories are tied to the news; many more are not. TAL stories tend to lead to epiphanies of the sort found in literature or the most cerebral standup comedy. In his essay, Ira tells the story of his evolution from NPR reporter to TAL impresario, and describes with detailed examples how he hears and reassembles stories.

Black voices on radio provided community building opportunities for African Americans. As such, blacks created an alternative public sphere which allowed them to engage in discourse that unifies people into a collective. The Urban League on the national and local levels aided community building by organizing its members to approach radio station managers beginning in 1941. The organization's directives led to the establishment of the “Negro Forum,” an Afrocentric talk show that integrated the airways in New Orleans in 1946. WNOE station owner James Noe provided O. C. W. Taylor 15 minutes of free airtime on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Noe's decision to accept the “Religious Forum” was also influenced by his interest in gaining Federal Communications Commission approval to change his position on the dial and increase the station's broadcast power from 250 watts to 50,000 watts.

In this chapter, the book moves into the twenty-first century to examine a changing Cuban Miami where the majority is made up of US-born generations and more recent arrivals since 1994. It historicizes the prominent role of radio in Cuban Miami—specifically the conservative genre of exile talk radio—and then considers comedy bits performed on the Enrique y Joe Show and The Enrique Santos Show. These radio programs sat at the top of Miami’s charts throughout the 2000s. Enrique Santos and Joe Ferrero, both US-born Cuban Americans, proudly performed the narrative of cubanía learned from the exile generation through use of idiomatic expressions, accents, and their famous prank call to Fidel Castro. But their pranks also marked a shift in the handling of Cuba-related topics on the air, articulating a much less conservative approach and demonstrating that a Cuban diasporic identity need not be tethered to a particular political ideology. Contextualizing these performances in relation to their audience of US-born Cuban Americans, more recent arrivals from the island, and the corporate investment of Univision in the Miami radio market provides a means to understand Cuban Miami’s shifting demographics and media landscape in the 2000s.

When liberal satirist Samantha Bee and conservative outrage host Glenn Beck appeared on Bee’s program in 2016 to discuss the ways their political rhetoric might be similar, it provided an opportunity to think about how some the functions and outcomes of the genres of liberal satire and conservative opinion (outrage) may overlap. This chapter describes this conversation between the two show hosts and uses it as a springboard for the book. The chapter introduces the two questions at the heart of this book: Why is political satire so liberal? Why do liberals seem unsuccessful at talk radio and outrage programming? The chapter also chronicles how and why the author came to ask these questions and summarizes the remaining chapters of the book, providing a roadmap for readers.

Spherical tanks have the potential for cost reduction in sensible thermal energy storage (TES) systems, by using less tank building material and insulation. The current CFD study compares the Thermal Efficiency (TE) of a thermocline storage system in a spherical tank to a cylindrical tank of the same volume. A parametric study is then performed on a spherical tank during the discharge process to determine the flow parameters that govern the thermocline formation and entrainment. The following parameters are used: tank diameter to inlet diameter ratio D/d = 10, inlet velocity (0.02–0.1 m/s), and ΔT (10–70° C), leading to an inlet Froude number (0.4–3), inlet Reynolds number (500–7500), and tank Richardson number (2–100). The results show a significant correlation between the inlet Reynolds and inlet Froude numbers, and the tank TE, in addition to a weak correlation between the tank Richardson number, based on the tank diameter, and the tank TE. The parametric study also shows a maximum tank TE at a Froude number equal to 0.5, and a proportional decrease of TE as the Reynolds number increases.

High pressure hydrogen storage is widely used in hydrogen filling stations and fuel cell automobiles. Currently, single filling is the main method for hydrogen transfer from stationary storage tanks to cylinders of fuel cell automobiles. Along with the wide application of hydrogen the multistage filling will be adopted in hydrogen filling stations due to its high hydrogen utilization ratio. The hydrogen utilization ratio of single or multistage filling can be determined by various parameters such as the pressure and volume of the stationary tanks and cylinders of fuel cell automobiles. In this research, the utilization ratios of hydrogen in different filling methods are analyzed using the algorithm established in this article based on the real gas law of hydrogen and the corresponding hydrogen utilization ratios are obtained. The results show that it can be significantly improved using multistage filling method and reaches a maximum as the ratio of the volume of higher-pressure stationary tank to the lower one is 0.5.

We have developed real-time methods to synthesize cooperative strategies for the multi-vehicle task assignment problem in an adversarial environment. By introducing a set of tasks to be completed by the team of vehicles and a trajectory generation primitive for each vehicle, we formulate the multi-vehicle control problem as a task assignment problem. The continuous component of the problem is captured by the trajectory primitive, and the combinatorial component is captured by task assignment. We have developed an efficient branch and bound solver for the task assignment component of the problem. In this paper, we analyze the computational complexity of our solver with variations in parameters of the problem. We found a phase transition in the ratio of the maximum velocity of opposing vehicles, and we found a phase transition in the ratio of the number of vehicles per team. The results show that the task assignment problem is difficult to solve when the capabilities of the two teams are comparable and easy to solve when one team is more capable than the other.

Since the length-width ratio of large long corridor surge tank is big, longitudinal flow appears obviously, which influences the safety of water diversion system. Based on the water conveyance system of hydropower station with long corridor surge tank, influence of longitudinal fluctuation on hydraulic transients is analyzed, which is contrasted with the results without consideration of longitudinal fluctuation, and corresponding model test is also carried out. It is shown that numerical simulation results, without consideration of longitudinal fluctuation, are more dangerous and those considering longitudinal fluctuation relatively conform to reality. Further more, influence factors on longitudinal fluctuation are studied, the bigger the length-width ratio of surge tank and the lower the operation water level, the severer the longitudinal fluctuation. In order to decrease longitudinal fluctuation, surge tank with small length-width ratio should be designed, and station should be operated on high water level as much as possible.

In the present paper, a moving device to suppress sloshing is proposed and analyzed. The effectiveness of the suppressing device is evaluated by numerical simulations based on MPS (Moving particle semi-implicit) method. As the parameter of study, lateral forces on the tank walls are used. The results shows that the device reduces remarkably the lateral sloshing forces when filling ratio is low and it eliminates the occurrence of hydrodynamic impact on the tank ceiling when the filling ratio is high.

A parametric modeling study has been carried out to investigate the effect of change in operating conditions on VRFB performance. The objective of this research is to develop a computer program to predict the dynamic behavior of single cell VRFB combining fluid mechanics, reaction kinetics, and electric circuit. This paper deals with the exact solutions obtained by solving the governing differential equations of VRFB by using Maple 2015. Calculations were made under electrolyte concentrations of 1M–3M of V2+, charging-discharging current of 1.85A–3.85A, and tank to cell ratio of 5:1 to 10:1. Results show that the discharging time increases from 2.2 hours to 6.7 hours when the value of electrolytes concentration of V2+ increases from 1M to 3M. However, the charging time decreases from 6.9 hours to 3.3 hours with the increment of applied current from 1.85A to 3.85A. Additionally, when the tank to cell ratio is increased from 5:1 to 10:1, the charging-discharging time increased from 4.5 hours to 8.2 hours. Ampere-hour capacity of the cell was found to increase when molar concentration of vanadium and, tank to cell ratio were increased.

This study aims to determine the failure modes of the eleven API 12F shop welded tanks plus two proposed new sizes through finite element and stress analysis of more than 350 different models. Four separate analysis where carried out throughout this investigation. An elastic stress analysis considering non-linear deformations was performed to determine the yielding pressure of the tanks and maximum design pressure. An elastic buckling mode analysis evaluated the potential buckling pressure as a failure mode of the tanks. The redistribution of stresses due to inelastic deformations and plastic collapse were evaluated through an elastic-plastic stress analysis. Finally, a wind load analysis was developed to study the stress levels and uplift deformation of the API 12F tank with greatest aspect ratio (H/D). The presented research provides meaningful engineering calculations to evaluate the current design and capacity of the API 12F flat bottom tanks guaranteeing a safe performance of the equipments.

Pneumatic booster valve is widely used in local pressure boost circuit for energy saving, a new booster valve with energy recovery (short for BVER) was proposed in this paper in order to further improve the energy efficiency. Firstly, the principle of BVER was introduced by comparing with the traditional booster. Based on flow-rate characteristics equation, gas state equation, energy conservation equation, etc., the mathematics model of BVER was established, and the flow-rate characteristics, boost ratio, pressure in tank and energy efficiency were systematically analyzed by simulation. Lastly, the model was verified by experiments. This study shows that: firstly, the pressure decreased sharply with the flow-rate’s increasing, and the pressure in tank is much lower than in BVER. Secondly, the boost ratio was affected by supply pressure, regulator coefficient and the diameter of recovery chamber. Thirdly, the pressure fluctuation in tank decreases with the tank volume increasing, and the pressure fluctuation is less than 1% when tank volume is larger than 10L. Lastly, the energy efficiency will increase 5∼10 percent with the boost ratio increases 15∼25 percent under different supply pressure. This study proves that BVER has better performance than VBA for its high boost ratio and high energy efficiency, and it provides a reference for booster valve’s design and energy saving.

The shell plate of oil storage tank is an important evaluating component in the Fitness-For Service Assessment (FFS), because it is required to have sufficient strength against static and dynamic pressures in both operating and earthquake conditions. This paper presents an investigation on the tendency of stress occurred in the local thin areas (LTAs) of shell plate subjected to an internal pressure by using a partial three-dimensional shell model. In the analyses, a LTA is assumed as a rectangular area or a ring area with a rectangular cross section, and its lengths in the longitudinal and circumferential directions are taken as study parameters. The tendency of stress ratio (the stress in LTA of shell plate to that without LTA) has been investigated and the analytical results show that there is a tendency for stress ratio to be going up when the longitudinal length of LTA lengthens gradually and the thickness of shell plate is decreased. But it is opposite for increasing the circumferential length, when the stress ratio is going down. The relation between the stress ratio and the shape of LTA with different combination of sizes are clarified by the analytical results.
