Resumen

En los últimos años, diferentes técnicas y frameworks han surgido con el fin de proveer una solución para crear aplicaciones cross-platform. El objetivo es desarrollar un solo código que puede ser desplegado en diferentes sistemas operativos y proveer una experiencia completamente nativa. Desde 2015, React Native ha sido promocionado como una opción para desarrollar aplicaciones móviles con el objetivo de escribir el código una sola vez y desplegarlo en cualquier plataforma perfectamente. Al momento no hay otra librería JavaScript que permita el desarrollo de aplicaciones móviles nativas. Este trabajo realiza un análisis experimental con una visión imparcial, basada en la experiencia del desarrollo de aplicaciones móviles utilizando React Native y código nativo. Analiza varios escenarios para elegir analíticamente código nativo, React Native o una combinación de ambos para desarrollar una aplicación móvil. Algunas conclusiones encontradas sostienen que la elección de la tecnología depende de la naturaleza del proyecto, tiempo, presupuesto, experiencia del equipo de desarrollo y los requerimientos de la aplicación.

Abstract: This paper describes the whole process of android application development using the react-native framework and firebase of google and developed the application “DailyDairy''. The Application is developed for medium-sized and digitally illiterate dairy farmers. The software is divided into milk distribution management and payment transactions, statistics and analysis can be a variety of technical data to analyze, synthesize, organize, and the User Interface is practical, economic, and user-friendly. This application also solves the differences between Vendor and his Customers. This paper also describes the integration of firebase firestore (database provided by google) with android application development with javascript framework react-native and code editor used in is visual studio code by Microsoft. Resumen

Cross-platform framework is becoming more and more popular. Many giant tech companies have their own offering with different programming languages. With so many choices, sometimes it is difficult for a start-up developer to choose which framework they will use for their project. Therefore, this research aims to give insight for start-up developers on which cross-platform framework is better between Flutter and React Native by comparing their performance. This research achieved its goal by creating two identical mobile applications using Flutter and React Native and then comparing their performance using a theoretical framework that measures load time, average frame rate, and memory usage. The result of this testing is that Flutter has a shorter load time at 1.69 second compared to React Native at 4.26 second and lower memory usage at 6.52MB compared to React Native at 27.6MB. Their average frame rate is very comparable hovering around 60 frames per second. With faster load time and lower memory usage Flutter has better performance wise compared to React Native.

Resumen

Mobile application development was growing very rapidly along the increase of mobile devices and technology. One of the problems faced is the different platforms operating system on the market, it is make more difficult development process and requires a lot of cost. An application must be built at least 2 (two) types according to the current popular operating system (Android and iOS) in order to be able to get large application users.Hybrid Application is an application development model that combines native application approach and web application to be a mobile application. It can be converted into more than one mobile operating system platform later. The advantages of hybrid applications is the rapid development process because one source code can run on more than one mobile operating system, while the disadvantage is it use more of resources than the application built with the original language of the operating system platform used.Adobe Phonegap (Phonegap) and React Native are two frameworks that can be used to build mobile hybrid applications. In this study will be compared in terms of development and application results that run on Android devices from each framework by using case studies Aplikasi Jadwal dan Nilai pada Politeknik Kota Malang.

Resumen

Creating a mobile application often requires the developers to create one for Android och one for iOS, the two leading operating systems for mobile devices. The two applications may have the same layout and logic but several components of the user interface (UI) will differ and the applications themselves need to be developed in two different languages. This process is gruesome since it is time consuming to create two applications and it requires two different sets of knowledge. There have been attempts to create techniques, services or frameworks in order to solve this problem but these hybrids have not been able to provide a native feeling of the resulting applications. This thesis has evaluated the newly released framework React Native that can create both iOS and Android applications by compiling the code written in React. The resulting applications can share code and consists of the UI components which are unique for each platform. The thesis focused on Android and tried to replicate an existing Android application in order to measure user experience and performance. The result was surprisingly positive for React Native as some user could not tell the two applications apart and nearly all users did not mind using a React Native application. The performance evaluation measured GPU frequency, CPU load, memory usage and power consumption. Nearly all measurements displayed a performance advantage for the Android application but the differences were not protruding. The overall experience is that React Native a very interesting framework that can simplify the development process for mobile applications to a high degree. As long as the application itself is not too complex, the development is uncomplicated and one is able to create an application in very short time and be compiled to both Android and iOS.

Digitalization is happening all around us as more tasks get software assistance, to ease the workload and improve performance. This opens up for endless possibilities but it also comes with challenges. The progress made within software development means that the first solutions implemented can differ a lot compared to the latest for a company. This spread makes maintenance significantly harder due to having different implementations or even different operating systems. Cross platform compatibility is a technique that battles this spread by allowing for a single implementation to be used in all environments, enabling maintenance to be focused solely on one product. The transitioning towards cross platform applications is easy when there is no external hardware involved. However when there is external hardware the transitioning needs to take limitations regarding hardware compatibility into consideration, which has been the case for this project. In the thesis, a proof of concept has been developed for migration from native Android towards React Native which allows for a cross platform compatible application. External hardware in the form of a card reader, receipt printer and touch screen are included to analyze the possibility to migrate without having to replace the current hardware due to limitations regarding hardware accessibility and performance. This work shows that it would be possible to transition from a native Android application with external hardware to a React Native application if an additional backend environment is implemented alongside. The backend is for validation and token generation towards third party programs connected to the hardware. This proof of concept shows that the performance loss is within an acceptable boundary which only marginally affects user experience.

Developing apps for both Android and iOS has previously necessitated two different code bases in the platforms’ native languages. Creating an app would be a quicker and easier process if they could be written once and run on both platforms, and such solutions have been appearing over the last few years. One of them is React Native, which we will investigate in this paper. To investigate React Native’s capabilities, we are going to look into the feasibility of porting the Android and iOS versions of an already existing fitness app, developed by a software consulting company. The original app uses Bluetoothfunctionality to record users’ heart-rate during exercise. They want to know if they can switch to React Native and a single code-base for future installments, lessening the workload and making it more maintainable. In order to find out if it is advisable to recreate the app with React Native we attempt a port of the app, looking at performance, functionality, and the codebase. The code-base investigation focuses on what parts can become completely platform independent and where we need to fill in the gaps with code targeted to a certain platform, and how large our port is in relation to the equivalent code in the original app. We end up finding that performance is severely worse on iOS, with much higher CPU utilization when the Bluetooth functionality is in use. On Android the difference is noticeable but not quite as big. For functionality we could get everything working with a single code-base except for handling Bluetooth while the app is in the background on Android. The code-base is mostly platform independent, and where it is not this is due to differing Bluetooth implementations for the platforms. It is also larger than either of the original apps, but smaller than the two put together. Lastly, we conclude that React Native has a largely platform-independent codebase, and for simpler apps where less complex functionality is needed we suspect the code-base can be completely platform-independent. The cause and remedies to iOS performance ought to be further investigated, but React Native is capable for this particular use-case.

Creating native mobile application on multiple platforms generate a lot of duplicate code. This thesis has evaluated if the code quality attribute modifiability improves when migrating to React Native. One Android and one iOS codebase existed for an application and a third codebase was developed with React Native. The measurements of the codebases were based on the SQMMA-model. The metrics for the model were collected with static analyzers created specifically for this project. The results created consists of graphs that show the modifiability for some specific components over time and graphs that show the stability of the platforms. These graphs show that when measuring code metrics on applications over time it is better to do this on a large codebase that has been developed for some time. When calculating a modifiability value the sum of the metrics and the average value of the metrics between files should be used and it is shown that the React Native platform seems to be more stable than native.

In today's society, smartphones are so widely established that corporations have even changed their cooperate culture when it comes to bringing your own personal device to work. Sales graphs prove that smartphones are more established today than ever before, which creates pressure for companies big, as small to extend and provide their services from the pocket of the user in the form of a smartphone mobile application. This paper focuses on the development of smartphone applications. Looking into the native development way for iOS and the code fragmentation that characterizes the long and costly development in order to provide the application on the big mobile operating systems by evaluating the cross-platform solution React Native that bypasses the fragmentation.   The experiment presents the collected data and its solutions, with an evaluation of the React Native framework. Finally, thoughts and future work to further extend the category is presented.

La creazione di un’applicazione mobile richiede spesso agli sviluppatori di crearne una per Android e una per iOS, i due principali sistemi operativi per dispositivi mobili. Le due applicazioni possono avere lo stesso layout e la stessa logica ma i componenti dell’interfaccia utente (UI) saranno diversi e le applicazioni stesse dovranno essere sviluppate in due linguaggi differenti. Questo processo diventa lungo poiché è necessario molto tempo per la creazione di due applicazioni e richiede due diversi set di conoscenze. Vari sono stati i tentativi di creare tecniche, servizi o framework per risolvere questo problema, ma questi non sono stati in grado di fornire una sensazione nativa delle applicazioni. La tesi in questione ha come oggetto lo studio del framework React Native con il quale è possibile sviluppare applicazioni sia iOS che Android compilando codice scritto in React. Le applicazioni ottenute possono condividere codice e sono costituite da componenti UI che sono unici per ciascuna piattaforma. La tesi si concentra sullo sviluppo per la piattaforma Android e vengono studiate le varie modalità fornite dal framework per quanto riguarda l’installazione degli strumenti, l’inizializzazione di un progetto, l’uso degli strumenti e della documentazione, le potenzialità del framework, l’uso di componente hardware, la velocità e la facilità di sviluppo. Il risultato è stato positivo per quanto riguarda l’applicazione finale ottenuta.

The global mobile OS market share is mainly dominated by two operative systems. One of them is Android, and the other one called iOS. These two together had more than 99% of the market share in 2018, and it does not look like this trend is going to change anytime soon. Because of these two completely different platforms, there are many frameworks that provide solutions for developing applications that are platform independent. This study contains performance comparison between two of the more popular frameworks called Fluer and React Native. The performance is measured in terms of the number of dropped frames under a certain time for two different applications. The results that were acquired during tests reveal that React Native dropped less frames in total, although the difference was not significant.

React Native has quickly become one of the most popular cross-platform frameworks for developing Android and iOS applications since it was first released by Facebook in 2015. In this study a proof of concept application is developed and a set of features are evaluated with regard to performance efficiency. Results of measurements show that while React Native does perform worse than it's Android counterpart, it performs sufficiently well for building most applications with but can be more problematic for applications running heavier client-side logic.

The development of apps in a cross-platform framework is something that has been appearing more over the latest years. But the knowledge of knowing which of the two popular frameworks, React Native, and Flutter are most efficient when it comes to resource management and general comparisons are less known. This is what this thesis investigates. To find out the comparisons between React Native and Flutter we created two similar apps and document the process of creating an app with the selected frameworks. To get data on the differences when developing an app with these frameworks, we made a survey to get more experienced developers' input. We then did performance tests of the apps to be able to compare the results of the respective framework. The applications we built had several similar functionalities that we used to measure the performance. We also touched on the subject of comparison between a cross-platform framework and a native framework. To do this we performed a literature review on related work to conclude the approaches. From our result, we could conclude that the performance of the Flutter app had a slight advantage over the React Native app. But the difference was not that remarkable, and the overall development was fairly similar. There were some differences to the approaches of development when it came to less experienced developers compared to more experienced developers which we learn from our survey. More experienced developers tended to use external debugging tools, while less experienced used built-in tools such as console commands. Finally, we want to conclude that both Flutter and React Native has their pros and cons. Both frameworks have a big community which is growing everyday, but we believe that Flutter might overtake the popularity from React Native due to its slight performance superiority.From our literature review we can conclude that both approaches has their advantages and it depends a lot on the concept of the app. When developing a more complex app, the native approach is superior. When developing smaller apps with shorter life periods, cross-platform will faster get the app on the market.

Resumen

In the monograph, logistics is presented in an unusual form - as an element of a system of general, aggregate knowledge. This allowed the authors to reach new levels of knowledge and solve a number of complex problems. The scientific theory of logistics is presented as a system of laws, categories and principles ordered according to internal causal necessity and explaining the nature of economic flows. The scientific substantiation of the complete logistics system as a set of complexes of activities and resistances is given. Using the example of the functioning of logistics flows, the effect of the law of selection and the law of measure is shown in the form of a struggle of forms, in which more perfect forms survive, and less perfect forms are destroyed. A strict scientific approach, the richness of the text with information are combined with an accessible way of presentation, which allows the book to be addressed to a wide range of readers.

In many cases of drug-induced immunologic thrombocytopenia (DITP), a metabolite, rather than the native drug, is suspected of provoking the destructive drug-dependent antibodies (DDAB) responsible for this severe hemorrhagic disorder. However, this has not previously been investigated for Qn- and Qd-DDAB. We report evidence that the native drugs, and not their metabolites, are the provocative agents in Qn and Qd DITP. Reactions of Qn- and Qd-DDAB with platelets were studied with the native drugs and four of their metabolites: the N-oxide and 10,11-diol derivatives (quinuclidine ring modifications), the des-methyl derivatives (aromatic quinoline ring modification), and 2'-quininone and 2'-quinidinone (2'-oxo derivatives) (also quinoline ring modifications on Qn and Qd, respectively). Five antibodies were studied:two Group 1 DDAB (specific for compounds with native configuration at asymmetric carbon positions), two Group 2 DDAB (similar to Group 1 DDAB but also known to require the methoxy group on the quinuclidine ring for full activity), and one Group 3 DDAB (reactive with the native drug, its stereoisomer, and several nonmetabolic analogs of both compounds) . Using a complement-dependent 51Cr-lysis assay, the reactions of all DDAB with platelets and the four metabolites were similar to 100-fold weaker when compared to reactions obtained with the native drug, with these exceptions:Group 2 DDAB failed to react with the desmethyl and 2'-oxo metabolites and the Group 3 DDAB failed to react with 2'-oxo Qd. This observation shows that the activity of certain DDAB is critically dependent on the native quinoline ring structure. Importantly, none of the DDAB reacted more strongly with any of the metabolites tested when compared with reactions in the presence of the native drug. These findings indicate that DDAB react with platelets preferentially in the presence of the unaltered Qn and Qd molecules and suggest that, while the role of metabolites cannot be entirely ruled out, the native structure of the drug molecule is sufficient to stimulate production of the antibodies responsible for DITP.

Electron microscopy is a very convenient method to localize the epitopes of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) at the surface of macromolecules for studying their tree-dimensional organization.We applied this immuno-electron microscopic method to human ct2-macroglobulin (ct2M). 29 anti-α2M mAbs have been tested with the four different forms of a2M : native and chymotrypsin-transformed tetramers, and the corresponding dimers, obtained by dissociation with divalent cations. These mAbs can be classified in three types : those which are specific for 1) the H-like transformed molecules, 2) the native molecules, and 3) those which can react with both forms of α2M.1) Among the H-like α2M specific mAbs, several react with the 20 kD-domain which is recognized by the cellular receptor of transformed a2M. This domain is located at the carboxyterminal end of each monomer. One IgG binds to the end of two adjacent tips of the H-like form.The other mAbs of this type bind to the α2M tips at non-terminal positions. Intermolecular connections built polymers of alternating α2M and IgG molecules.2) Among the native a2M-specific mAbs some are able to inhibit the protease-induced transformation of the native α2M. The binding sites of these mAbs are demonstrated on the native half-molecules. One of these mAbs was also able to react with transformed dimers, in a region corresponding very likely to an inaccessible epitope in the tetrameric transformed α2M molecule.3) Among the mAbs of this type, only two were able to inhibit the protease-induced transformation of α2M. Obviously, their epitopes should be close to the bait region of α2M. The other mAbs reacting with both α2M forms did not inhibit the α2M transformation.All these mAbs can be distinguished by the structure of the immune complexes formed with all forms of α2M. The epitopes are more easily located on the dimers and on the H-like transformed α2M than on the native molecules.From these observations, we propose a new model of the tree-dimensional organization of the human α2M in its native and transformed configurations, and of its protease-induced transformation.

Este artigo relata o processo de desenvolvimento de um protótipo de aplicativo que tem como finalidade compartilhar (professores e alunos) projetos robóticos contendo, tutoriais, vídeos, atividades e desafios, envolvendo conteúdos de disciplinas curriculares do Ensino Fundamental I, II e Ensino Médio. O processo de concepção utilizou um modelo de desenvolvimento incremental, com o uso dos recursos providos pelas ferramentas Adobe XD, Node JS (Express e API Rest) e React Native. Os testes iniciais realizados com o protótipo do aplicativo apresentaram níveis satisfatórios em desempenho e funcionalidades.

Monoclonal antibodies (McAb) are often used to detect the domains of a molecule involved in an important function of a biological system.In this work, the effect of 20 McAb directed against the D domain of fibrin/ogen degradation products (FbDP) were analyzed on fibrin polymerization. Two McAb which react with fragment D1 but not with fragment D3 inhibited both thrombin and reptilase-induced fibrin formation. It is therefore suggested that these 2 McAb recognize an epitope in the vicinity of the polymerization site "a" located in the JT 374-396 domain in fibrin/ogen molecule. (This sequence is only present in D1 and not in D3.An inhibitory effect on thrombin and reptilase-induced fibrin formation was also induced by 2 other anti D McAb which recognize an epitope present in both D1 and D3 fibrinogen-degradation products. Therefore, these 2 McAb do not react directly with the polymerizing site "a". A possible mechanism of this inhibition could be a conformational change induced by the binding of these McAb, leading to the masking of the polymerizing site "a". Another possible mechanism of the inhibitory effect is that thrombin and reptilase-induced fibrin formation may involve other sites on the fibrinogen molecule. It should therefore be suggested that unknown domains could be important for fibrin polymerization. These domains may act either directly or indirectly by inducing a three dimensional structure of the native molecule required for the expression of polymerizing domains.

The article deals with the results of the research aimed at the improvement of methodology of use of augmented reality for the development of health preserving competence of a Physical Education teacher under conditions of post-graduate education. From the point of Umwelt phenomenology, augmented reality is characterized by correspondence to nature, its cognitive, metaphoric, diverse, interactive, anthropomorphic nature. The article analyzes the vectors of using augmented reality in the professional activity of a Physical Education teacher, particularly the one that is aimed at health preservation. The software that may be used with this purpose has been described. The attitude of Physical Education teachers to the use of the augmented reality for preserving their students’ health and development of their motion skills, intellect and creativity was determined in the research. The results of the survey show that the majority of teachers positively react to the idea of using augmented reality in their professional activity. However, in some cases, not a fully formed understanding of this issue was observed. The ways of solving the stated problem could be the inclusion of augmented technologies’ techniques into the process of post-graduate education, taking into consideration the anthropological, ethical, cultural contexts as well as teacher involvement in the stated process.

The idea that children have a “right to education” has been widely accepted since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 (United Nations, 1948) and periodically reinforced since. The “right to education” has always, explicitly or implicitly, encompassed a “right to learn.” Measures of schooling alone, such as enrollment or grade attainment, without reference to skills, capabilities, and competencies acquired, are inadequate for defining education or education poverty. Because of education’s cumulative and dynamic nature, education poverty needs an “early” standard (e.g., Grade 3 or 4 or age 8 or 10) and a “late” standard (e.g., Grade 10 or 12 or ages 15 and older). Further, as with all international poverty definitions, there needs to be a low, extreme standard, which is found almost exclusively in low- and middle-income countries and can inform prioritization and action, and a higher “global” standard, against which even some children in high income countries would be considered education poor but which is considered a reasonable aspiration for all children. As assessed against any proposed standard, we show there is a massive learning crisis: students spend many years in school and yet do not reach an early standard of mastery of foundational skills nor do they reach any reasonable global minimum standard by the time they emerge from school. The overwhelming obstacle to addressing education poverty today is not enrollment/grade attainment nor inequality in learning achievement, but the fact that the typical learning profile is just too shallow for children to reach minimum standards.

The black carp (bc)GtH IIb cDNA was amplified and isolated, cloned and sequenced. Comparison of the bcGtH IIb deduced a.a. sequence with that of GtH IIb from other teleosts revealed high homology to cyprinid species and a lower homology to salmonid or perciform fish. The gene coding for the GtH IIb was isolated and sequenced. Three bc recombinant phages which hybridized to the goldfish GtH Ib cDNA probe were isolated and are currently being characterized. The region coding for the mature GtH IIb was expressed in a bacterial expression vector resulting in the production of a recombinant protein. In vitro folding resulted in a protein only 1.3% of which displaced the native common carp GtH II in a RIA. Therefore, the common carp GtH RIA was utilized for the physiological studies at the current phase of the project. Two non-functional sites were identified along the brain-pituitary gonadal axis in the immature black carp. The pituitary is refractory to GnRH stimulation due to a block proximal to the activation of PKA and PKC probably at the level of GnRH receptors. The gonads, although capable of producing steroids, are refractory to gonadotropic stimulation but do respond to cAMP antagonists, indicating a block at the GtH receptor level. Attempts to advance puberty in 2 and 3 y old black carp showed that testosterone (T) stimulates GtH synthesis in the pituitary and increases its sensitivity to GnRh. A 2 month treatment combining T+GnRH increased the circulating GFtH level in 3 y old fish. Addition of domperidone to such a treatment facilitated both the accumulation of GtH in the pituitary and its response to GnRH. The cDNA of striped bass GtH a, Ib and IIb subunits were amplified, isolated, cloned and sequenced, and their deduced a.a. sequences were compared with those of other teleosts. A ribonuclease protection assay was developed for a sensitive and simultaneous determination of all GtH subunits, and of b-actin mRNAs of the striped bass. GnRH stimulated dramatically the expression of the a and GtH IIb subunits but the level of GtH Ib mRNA increased only moderately. These findings suggest that GtH-II, considered in salmonids to be involved only in final stages of gametogenesis, can be induced by GnRH to a higher extent than GtH-I in juvenile striped bass. The native GtH II of the striped bass was isolated and purified, and an ELISA for its determination was developed. The production of all recombinant striped bass GtH subunits is in progress using the insect cell (Sf9) culture and the BAC-TO-BAC baculovirus expression system. A recombinant GtH IIb subunit has been produced already, and its similarity to the native subunit was confirmed. The yield of the recombinant glycoprotein can reach 3.5 mg/ml after 3 days culture. All male striped bass reach puberty after 3 y. However, precocious puberty was discovered in 1 and 2 y old males. Females become vitellogenic during their 4th year. In immature 2 y old females, T treatment elevates the pituitary GtH II content while GnRH only potentiates the effect. However, in males GnRH and not T affects GtH accumulation in the pituitary. Neither GnRH, nor T treatment resulted in gonadal growth in 2 y old striped bass, indicating that either the accumulated GtH II was not released, or if released, the gonads were refractory to GtH stimulation, similar to the situation in the immature black carp. In 3 y old female striped bass, 150 day GnRHa treatment resulted in an increase in GSI, while T treatment, with or without GnRHa, resulted in a decrease in oocyte diameter, similar to the effect seen in the black carp. Further attempts to advance puberty in both fish species should take into account the positive effect of T on pituitary GtH and its negative effect of ovarian growth.

There are currently more than 36 million people living with HIV/AIDS globally, and in 1999 5.3 million individuals were newly infected with the virus. AIDS activities initiated by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have been highly influential on thinking and strategies found within the HIV/AIDS sector. Yet NGOs often experience particular difficulties in increasing the scale of their activities to reach larger numbers of people, to have an impact at levels higher than the community, and to address the broader social determinants of HIV/AIDS. Perceiving the urgent need for NGOs to expand the scale of their activities in the face of an escalating epidemic, Horizons and the International HIV/AIDS Alliance launched an initiative to examine the nature of the challenge to scale up in the context of HIV/AIDS internationally. This publication was prepared as part of this initiative and addresses the specific challenge of deliberately increasing the scale of HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and support programs in developing countries.

In low- and middle-income countries, informal workers are particularly vulnerable to the health and economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and often neglected by policy responses. At the same time, the crisis is rapidly changing the ways that states engage with informal workers. We argue that the relationships between informal workers and states – and the politics of creating and accessing these linkages – are a critical and frequently overlooked part of the politics of the pandemic. Both pre-existing structural disconnection from the state—embodied, for example, through limited access to health infrastructure—and state attempts to build new connections, including through cash transfer programmes for informal workers, have a profound impact on the effectiveness and reach of state crisis responses. Without considering the varied and dynamic nature of the linkages between states and informal workers we cannot understand the heterogeneous health and economic impacts of the pandemic, state capacity to respond to the crisis, or institutional change in the context of crisis.

The learning crisis in developing countries is increasingly acknowledged (World Bank, 2018). The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) include goals and targets for universal learning and the World Bank has adopted a goal of eliminating learning poverty. We use student level PISA-D results for seven countries (Cambodia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Paraguay, Senegal, and Zambia) to examine inequality in learning outcomes at the global, country, and student level for public school students. We examine learning inequality using five dimensions of potential social disadvantage measured in PISA: sex, rurality, home language, immigrant status, and socio-economic status (SES)—using the PISA measure of ESCS (Economic, Social, and Cultural Status) to measure SES. We document four important facts. First, with the exception of Ecuador, less than a third of the advantaged (male, urban, native, home speakers of the language of instruction) and ESCS elite (plus 2 standard deviations above the mean) children enrolled in public schools in PISA-D countries reach the SDG minimal target of PISA level 2 or higher in mathematics (with similarly low levels for reading and science). Even if learning differentials of enrolled students along all five dimensions of disadvantage were eliminated, the vast majority of children in these countries would not reach the SDG minimum targets. Second, the inequality in learning outcomes of the in-school children who were assessed by the PISA by household ESCS is mostly smaller in these less developed countries than in OECD or high-performing non-OECD countries. If the PISA-D countries had the same relationship of learning to ESCS as Denmark (as an example of a typical OECD country) or Vietnam (a high-performing developing country) their enrolled ESCS disadvantaged children would do worse, not better, than they actually do. Third, the disadvantages in learning outcomes along four characteristics: sex, rurality, home language, and being an immigrant country are absolutely large, but still small compared to the enormous gap between the advantaged, ESCS average students, and the SDG minimums. Given the massive global inequalities, remediating within-country inequalities in learning, while undoubtedly important for equity and justice, leads to only modest gains towards the SDG targets. Fourth, even including both public and private school students, there are strikingly few children in PISA-D countries at high levels of performance. The absolute number of children at PISA level 4 or above (reached by roughly 30 percent of OECD children) in the low performing PISA-D countries is less than a few thousand individuals, sometimes only a few hundred—in some subjects and countries just double or single digits. These four hard lessons from PISA-D reinforce the need to address global equity by “raising the floor” and targeting low learning levels (Crouch and Rolleston, 2017; Crouch, Rolleston, and Gustafsson, 2020). As Vietnam and other recent successes show, this can be done in developing country settings if education systems align around learning to improve the effectiveness of the teaching and learning processes to improve early learning of foundational skills.
