Social psychologists have long been interested in the effects of ‘contact’ between racial groups. The conditions under which this contact can manifest have usually been experimentally manipulated in order to determine optimal combinations. A shortcoming of this approach is that it constructs contact situations that are unnatural and contrived. Some researchers have proposed an approach that examines contact as a natural phenomenon (Dixon & Durrheim, 2003). The present research adopts this approach, and reports on a naturalistic, observational study of ‘contact’ between students in universi

The purpose of these studies is to further understand the fundamentals of CMP and to explore solutions to some of CMP's challenges. Mean residence time (MRT) is a widely used term that is mostly seen in classical chemical engineering reactor analysis. In a CMP process, the wafer-pad interface can be treated as a closed system reactor, and classical reactor theory can be applied to the slurry flow through the reg

Texto completo
Resumen
Abstract Allelopathy, or the process by which plants influence the growth and performance of their neighbours through the release of chemicals, may play a key role in mediating the impacts of non-native invasive species on their neighbours. The Novel Weapons Hypothesis purports that non-native invasive species are in part successful because they produce harmful allelochemicals to which resident species are particularly susceptible because residents lack a shared evolutionary history with the invader. While allelopathic non-native invaders may reduce the growth and performance of neighbours through direct phytotoxicity, they may more often exert negative impacts through disruption of biotic interactions among resident species. Allelopathy by non-native plants may disrupt mutualisms between resident plants and microbes, plant-herbivore interactions or existing competitive and facilitative interactions among resident plants. For example, several non-native plants are known to disrupt the mutualism between resident plants and mycorrhizal fungi, reducing resident plant fitness to the benefit of the invader. Allelopathic non-natives may also disrupt interactions among resident plants and their herbivores when allelochemicals also influence herbivore behaviour or fitness. Alternatively, biotic interactions can also be protective for resident species, which may be less susceptible to the impacts of non-native species when their mutualisms are intact. As we advance our understanding of allelopathy and its role in mediating the impacts of invasive plant species, we may gain new insights by viewing invasions within a network context rather than focusing on pairwise interactions.

Resumen
AbstractThe introduction of the sharing economy has revolutionized resident-tourist relationships and provides further implications of destination sustainability. Built on several well-established theories, this conceptual study intends to develop a new and holistic framework to examine destination sustainability, focusing on the change of resident-tourist relationships. The framework is first guided by the stakeholder theory to identify the four key stakeholders in the new sharing economy context: residents, tourists, governments, and the sharing economy platform. With the collaboration theory and resource theory as a foundation, the framework then describes each stakeholder’s specific needs and resources. The service-dominant logic further supports service exchanges and value co-creation among stakeholders. The framework then adopts the capital theory approach to conceptualize destination sustainability in terms of human, social, natural and manufactured capital. Finally, three propositions are developed to justify the new peer-to-peer collaboration paradigm that leads to destination sustainability. The proposed framework is aligned with the six-pillar transformation in e-Tourism research and serves as an intelligent solution to destination sustainable development in the sharing economy context.

Resumen
Abstract After a long judicial fight between the 1970s and the late 1990s leading to the abolition of the condition of nationality that excluded foreigners from non-contributory benefits, and in a context of publicly debated restrictive immigration policies, other restrictive conditions were either reinforced or introduced in order to curb access to social protection for foreigners in France. A new condition of regularity for the access of foreigners to most social protection schemes was introduced and/or extended, especially since 1993. In a growing xenophobic context, restrictions were presented as a means to deter immigration and save the Welfare State placed under strong budgetary constraints. The classical condition of residence was also reactivated in a way to place more restrictions. New requirements, such as a condition of anteriority of presence and a condition of anteriority (seniority) of regular residence, were developed to exclude more non-EU migrants, despite their regular situation.

Resumen
AbstractThe effectiveness of governance depends on the knowledge upon which decisions are based. Knowledge veracity is particularly significant when future conditions are uncertain. In the context of global climate change, communities around the world, including the residents of Rapa Nui (Easter Island, Chile), face tremendous uncertainty in resource availability. In the context of these looming challenges, prehistoric Rapa Nui is often treated as a warning about human-induced ecological catastrophe. With contemporary populations of the island wrestling about issues of governance, it is vital that researchers carefully validate their knowledge about the island’s past. Despite the claims of traditional narratives, new empirical research on Rapa Nui indicates that the traditional “collapse” narrative has no basis. Instead, the island is now known to have been sustainable from its prehistory until European contact. These findings point to the potential of alternative action models and new governance structures.

In microreactors, interactions between fluid and channel wall affect many chemical reactions. Due to a good heat and momentum transfer, highly exothermic reactions can be quenched and so combustion is inhibited. Resumen
The formation of the urban identity of an individual resident and of the urban community as a whole is multi-determined. In socio-psychological research, perceptions of the main factors of its formation can be summarised through geographical, historical, spatial, individual-personal and socio-cultural characteristics. The objective of our study was to describe the role of territorial and temporal factors (place of birth and the duration of dwelling in a city) in the formation and manifestation of emotional, cognitive, motivational and behavioural parameters of the urban identity of residents.

Several analytical models exist to predict droplet impact behavior on superhydrophobic surfaces. However, no previous model has rigorously considered the effect of surface slip on droplet spreading and recoiling that is inherent in many superhydrophobic surfaces. This paper presents an analytical model that takes into account surface slip at the solid-fluid interface during droplet deformation. The effects of slip are captured in terms that model the kinetic energy and viscous dissipation and are compared to a classical energy conservation model given by Attane et al. and experimental data fro

Microstructured devices have gained much attention in R&D and industry as they offer large specific surface area with enhanced mass and heat transfer. Helically coiled tubular devices in micro-scale can further increase the performance in terms of transport phenomena, as secondary flow (Dean vortices) enhances the radial mixing along the tube. In the content of this work liquid-liquid mass transfer of different helical capillary flow reactors was investigated and compared with straight capillaries by using water/acetone/butyl acetate test systems for liquid extraction. Microchannel mixers enable faster mixing times compared with batch stir mixing leading to the promise of higher throughput, better yields and less solvent usage for the solution-phase reactive precipitation of inorganic nanoparticles. However, reliance on diffusive transport for subsecond mixing requires channel dimensions in the tens of micrometers. These channel dimensions make diffusive micromixers vulnerable to clogging. In this paper, an oscillatory flow mixing strategy is explored to increase the contact area between reagents within larger microchannels. Forward and reverse oscillatory s

In an effort to increase thermal energy storage densities and turbine inlet temperatures in concentrating solar power (CSP) systems, focus on energy storage media has shifted from molten salts to solid particles. These solid particles are stable at temperatures far greater than that of molten salts, allowing the use of efficient high-temperature turbines in the power cycle. Furthermore, many of the solid particles under development store heat via reversible chemical reactions (thermochemical energy storage, TCES) in addition to the heat they store as sensible energy. The large area-to-volume ratio of microreactors gives prospect of better yield and selectivity than for conventional designs, since diffusive fluxes of mass and heat in micro-devices scale with area, while the rate of changes corresponding to sources and sinks are proportional to volume. Indeed, theoretical considerations of the scaling behavior [1] support the fact that micro-reactors allow for faster chemical reactions and provide better thermal control. Moreover, specific applications prove that these advantages of micro-reactors can be realized in order to perform fast exothermic reactions

Being able to follow the chain of contagion of COVID-19 is important to help save lives and control the epidemic without sustained costly lockdowns. This is especially relevant in Latin America, where economic contractions have already been the largest in the regions history. Given the high rates of transmission of COVID-19, relying only in manual contact tracing might be infeasible. Acceptability and uptake of contact tracing apps with exposure notifications is key for the implementation the “test, trace and treat” triad. In the first study of its kind in Latin America, we find that for a nat

This paper investigates what explains the variation in impacts of COVID-19 across Brazilian cities. I assemble data from over 2,500 cities on COVID-19 cases and deaths, population mobility, and local policy responses. I study how these outcomes correlate with pre-pandemic local characteristics, drawing comparisons with existing US estimates when possible. As in the United States, the connections between city characteristics and outcomes in Brazil can evolve over time, with some early correlations fading as the pandemic entered a second wave. For many decades in Tunisia, there has been a robust link between natural resource management and contentious national and local politics. These disputes manifest in the form of protests, sit-ins, the disruption of production and distribution and legal suits on the one hand, and corporate and government response using coercive and concessionary measures on the other. Residents of resource-rich areas and their allies protest the inequitable distribution of their local natural wealth and the degradation of their health, land, water, soil and air.
