The effect of temperature on relative growth rates (RGR) and the ability to survive at stress temperatures have been investigated in isolates of the green algal species Cladophora vagabunda from Roscoff (Eastern Atlantic, temperate), Corsica (Mediterranean, subtropical), Western Australia (Indian Ocean, subtropical) and Curacao (Western Atlantic, tropical). Growth was observed between 1O°-35°C, except in the Roscoff isolate which grew between 10°-30°C and a temperature of 5°C was too low for growth in all isolates. Those indicate that all isolates were comparatively eurythermal. Variations in RGR were observed with a high maximum RGR in the W. Australian and Roscoff isolates with ca. 74% increase in length per day at 30°C, and a lower maximum RGR in the Corsican and Curacao isolates with ca. 30-50% increase in length per day at 20°-25°C. The broadest optimum range (between 15°-30°C) was shown by the Corsican isolate and the narrowest optimum range (between 25°-30°C) by the Curacao isolate. At a low stress temperature of 0°C, all isolates survived for at least 30 days without damage, after 30-50 days the Roscoff and Curacao isolates showed damage (cell bleaching) but they recovered at 20°C. The W. Australian and the Corsican isolates survived undamage for 60 days. At a high stress temperature of 35°C, the W. Australian and the Curacao isolates survived for 60 days, but the other two isolates died within 30 days. The different temperature responses of the isolates demonstrated the ability of Cladophora vagabunda to exist in varied temperature environments.

Abstract. Emissions from the dominant six macroalgal species in the coastal regions around Rosccoff, France, have been modelled to support the Reactive Halogens in the Marine Boundary Layer Experiment (RHaMBLE) campaign undertaken in September 2006. A 2-D model was used to explore the relationship between point and line measurements of molecular iodine concentrations, and total regional emissions, based on seaweed I2 emission rates measured in the laboratory. The relatively simple modelling technique has produced modelled point and line data, which compare quantitatively with campaign measurements, and provide a link between emission fields and the different measurement geometries used to quantify atmospheric I2 concentrations during RHaMBLE. During nightime, absolute concentrations in the region of 5 pptv are predicted and measured in the LP-DOAS measurements, with site concentrations predicted and measured up to 40 pptv, compatible with concentrations above Laminariales beds of approximately 2.5 ppbv. Daytime measured concentrations of I2 at site correlate with modelled production and transport processes, however complete recycling of photodissociated I2 is required in the model to quantitatively match measured concentrations. Additional local source terms are suggested to provide a feasible mechanism to account for this discrepancy.Total of I2 emissions over the 100 km2 region around Roscoff are calculated as 1.5×1019 molecules per second during the lowest tides.

Abstract Marine tidal heterotardigrades (Echiniscoididae) have gained increasing interest owing to their unique adaptations and evolutionary position, bridging marine and limnoterrestrial taxa. Echiniscoididae was established to accommodate the marine genera Anisonyches and Echiniscoides. However, it has become apparent that Anisonyches, with its claw configuration, median cirrus and seminal receptacles, clearly has little or no affinity to tidal echiniscoidids with supernumerary claws. Consequently, we establish Anisonychidae fam. nov. to accommodate Anisonyches in a paraphyletic Arthrotardigrada and discuss its affinity to other heterotardigrade taxa. We recently split Echiniscoides into Isoechiniscoides and Echiniscoides s.l. The latter remains a miscellany of species complexes and undescribed genera, and it has become evident that a larger number of echiniscoidids belonging to Echiniscoides, Isoechiniscoides and undescribed genera coexist in intertidal sediments. Here, we erect Neoechiniscoides aski gen. nov., sp. nov. from Roscoff, France, which has a unique anal system, characterized by prominent lateral lobes with a set of wing-like structures. Phylogenetic analyses based on COI sequences infer a close relationship between N. aski, an undescribed species from Roscoff and unidentified species from Maine, USA. We propose that the new genus includes the former Echiniscoides species Echiniscoides pollocki and Echiniscoides horningi, which we hereby transfer.

Abstract. Atmospheric concentrations of the volatile reactive iodocarbons C2H5I, 1-C3H7I, 2-C3H7I, CH2ICl, CH2IBr, CH2I2 and bromocarbons CH2Br2 and CHBr3 were determined by GC/MS analysis of marine boundary layer air at Roscoff, Brittany on the northwest coast of France during September 2006. Comparison with other coastal studies suggests that emissions of these trace gases are strongly influenced by site topography, seaweed populations and distribution, as well as wind speed and direction and tide height. Concentrations of the very short-lived dihalomethanes CH2IBr and CH2I2 in particular showed evidence of tidal dependence, with higher concentrations observed at low tide during maximum exposure of seaweed beds. We also present a limited number of halocarbon measurements in surface seawater and estimate sea-air fluxes based on these and simultaneous air measurements. CH2Br2 and CHBr3 were strongly correlated both in air and in seawater, with CH2Br2/CHBr3 ratios of 0.19 in air and 0.06 in water. The combined midday I atom flux from the photolabile diahlomethanes CH2I2, CH2IBr and CH2ICl of ~5×103 molecules cm−3 s−1 is several orders of magnitude lower than the estimated I atom flux from I2 based on coinciding measurements at the same site, which indicates that at Roscoff the major I atom precursor was I2 rather than reactive iodocarbons.

Abstract. Measurements of significant concentrations of IO, I2 and BrO in a semi-polluted coast environment at Roscoff, in North-West France, have been made as part of the Reactive Halogens in the Marine Boundary Layer (RHaMBLe) campaign undertaken in September 2006. We use a one-dimensional column model, with idealised I2 emissions predicted using macroalgael maps and tidal data from the littoral area surrounding Roscoff, to investigate the probable causes for these observations. The coupled microphysical and chemical aerosol model simulates mixed-phase halogen chemistry using two separate particle modes, seasalt and non-seasalt, each comprising of eight size-sections. This work confirms the finding of a previous study that the BrO measurements are most likely caused by unknown, local sources. We find that the remote observations of IO and I2 are best replicated using the I2 recycling mechanism suggested by previous studies, but that such a mechanism is not wholly necessary. However we suggest that focussed observations of the changes in NOx and NOy concentrations, as well as changes in the nitrate fraction of the non-seasalt aerosol mode, in the presence of I2 bursts could be used to determine the atmospheric relevance of the predicted I2 recycling mechanism.

Mariages précoces, familles nombreuses: tels sont les cliches qui, aujourd'hui encore, caractérisent dans bien des esprits la vie d'autrefois. Or, dans ce petit pays de Léon, au nord de la Basse-Bretagne, s'est développée une société dont le comportement matrimonial s'oppose à ces idées préconçues. Ici, comme ailleurs en France, on ne se marie que lorsqu'on est sûr de pouvoir s'établir, avec un conjoint que l'on connait depuis l'enfance. Nulle chance ne semble être laissée à l'amour dans ces mariages arrangés par les familles, qui pensent avant tout à transmettre, intact, leur patrimoine à leurs enfants. Et pourtant. . . Dans ce pays de coutume égalitaire, il faut à ces enfants beaucoup d'entente, beaucoup de solidarité, pour conserver ces héritages souvent insignifiants, mais dont ils sont fiers. Paysans de Santec, marins de l'ile de Batz, bourgeois armateurs de Roscoff, se côtoient sans se mêler les uns aux autres, conscients de leur place dans la société. Ils ne s'en plaignent pas, et ne cherchent pas à sortir du rang où Dieu les a mis. Mais tous souhaitent conserver cette place, qu'ils transmettront à leur descendance, à travers les siècles.

Cette étude, à travers l'analyse de la banalité quotidienne et celle des comportements ritualises qu'elle généré, se propose de déterminer comment et dans quelle mesure, un groupe dominé parvient néanmoins à exprimer ses spécificités et comment, confronté à des conditions de travail contraignantes, se légitiment, s'organisent et s'autorégulent les rapports individuels et collectifs. Face à de tels bouleversements, les marins-pêcheurs prennent douloureusement conscience des insécurités et de l'aliénation que fait peser sur eux l'évolution de leur profession. Malgré les fortes sociabilités et professionnalités qui caractérisent cette population, le milieu du travail de la pêche se déstructure peu à peu. Les liens sociaux, qu'ils soient conviviaux ou conflictuels, s'amenuisent pendant que les représentations et les ritualisations du quotidien s'appauvrissent…

Quatre œuvres d'art commémoratives des quatre premiers directeurs de la Station Biologique de Roscoffont servi de matériel d'étude à une enquête générale sur les images de cet établissement scientifique. Une analyse iconographique puis sémiologique des œuvres a permis, en partie 1, de réunir un corpus d'images représentatives du domaine des recherches, et classées en trois typologies : les images artistiques/înstoriques/scientifiques. Une étude des images scientifiques a permis, en partie 2, d'identifier et de classer ces dernières en neuf typologies: le dessin, le schéma, le graphique, l'enregistrement graphique, la carte, la photographie, l'image composée, la planche graphique, la planche photographique. La création, en partie 3, d'une base de données sur le serveur du ministère de la culture, a consisté en la mise en œuvre d'un outil de connaissance et de sauvegarde du fonds iconographique de la Station de Roscoff et du patrimoine matériel auquel il fait visuellement référence
Four works of art commemorative of the first four directors of the Station Biologique de Roscoff have been used as study material for a general survey on images produced by this scientific institution. An analysis firstly iconographie then semiotic of the works has permitted, in part 1, to compile a corpus of representative images from the field of research, and classified according to three typologies: artistic/historical/scientific. A study of the scientific images has permitted, in part 2, to identify and to classify the latter into nine typologies: drawings, diagrams, graphs, graphic records, maps, photographs, compound images, graphic charts, photographic charts. The creation, in part 3, of a data base on the server of the Ministry of Culture, has consisted in the implementation of a tool of knowledge and preservation of the iconographie collection of the Station Biologique de Roscoff and of the material heritage to which it visually refers

Les problèmes posés par la systématique du genre Littorina sont liés au polychromatisme et au polymorphisme. Une étude critique de la proposition systématique la plus récente en liaison avec les propositions des travaux antérieurs et les facteurs du milieu fait l’objet de l’introduction. Par différentes techniques d’étude (marquage individuel, marquage de cohortes, évolution modale) les principales caractéristiques de la croissance des deux espèces, dans différentes condition hydrodynamiques sont étudiées. Le modèle retenu pour décrire la croissance est celui attribué à Von BERTALANFFY. D’autres modèles sont comparés à celui utilisé : des modèles à deux paramètres (VERHULST, GOMPERTZ) ou trois (NELDER). Ceux-ci, même s’ils présentent certains avantages théoriques, comportent une trop grande incertitude dans leur détermination pour les préférer au modèle simple utilisé. Chez les mâles, la maturation commence à l’âge de 11 mois, et la maturité dure jusqu’à 20 moins environ. Ensuite se succèdent des phases de régression et de maturité hivernale. Ce cycle sexuel conduit à la sénescence si les conditions hydrodynamiques (mode abrité) le permettent. Dans les stations de mode battu, le cycle sexuel ne s’exprime pas entièrement. Chez les femelles, la maturité intervient à 10 mois environ. Elle se poursuit par une phase de reproduction ovovivipare (gestation) à laquelle succède une période de régression. Ensuite, alternent des phases de maturité sans gestation et des phases de gestation. Il existe trois périodes préférentielles de ponte. Une en hiver, une en juin à laquelle fait suite une période de rétention des embryons durant l’Eté (conditions thermiques défavorables) ; il y a déblocage massif des pontes en octobre. Une à deux cohortes de femelles participent ensemble à la reproduction. L’étude de la croissance, des facteurs écologiques et des états sexuels indique que L. Rudis se reproduit très probablement selon deux modes de reproduction (ovipare et ovovivipare, ce dernier mode étant prépondérant en Hiver) et que la description d’une nouvelle espèce (L. Arcana) n’est pas nécessaire. Le taux de parasitisme varie selon la station. Le parasitisme entraîne des phénomènes de castration donc une diminution du potentiel reproducteur de l’espèce. Le taux de parasitisme augmente avec l’âge conformément à un modèle d’infestation contagieuse. Différents mécanismes assurant le maintien du potentiel reproducteur de la population sont envisagés, le plus probable serait un taux de mortalité juvénile diminuant avec la densité. Le taux mensuel de parasitisme semble croître graduellement entre octobre et septembre de l’année suivante. L’étude comparative des différentes modèles de croissance montre que le modèle le plus adapté est celui de Von BERTALANFFY. L’étude de la croissance et du cycle sexuel saisonnier des deux espèces, met en évidence le rôle primordial des facteurs du milieu dans la biologie de leurs populations. Ceci peut être considéré comme un mécanisme adaptatif pouvant aller jusqu’à une modification du mode de reproduction. Ce pouvoir adaptatif rend discutable certaines options systématiques actuelles tendant à décrire de nouvelles espèces à partir du seul mode de reproduction.

Afin d'evaluer la production potentielle de carbone par les principales macroalgues dans la zone cotiere, deux approches differentes ont ete utilisees: d'une part leurs evaluations qualitative et quantitative a partir d'outils de teledetection, d'autre part l'acquisition locale d'information concernant la productivite potentielle maximale des principales ceintures algales. Le site pilote choisi est celui de la region de roscoff (nord finistere, france), caracterise par la presence dominante de populations de fucales et de laminaires. Concernant l'utilisation des techniques de teledetection, compte tenu de la diversite spatiale et specifique du milieu, les donnees utilisees sont principalement issues du spectro-imageur casi en raison de ses fines resolutions geometriques et spectrale. Toutefois, des images spot ont egalement ete utilisees. Trois methodes ont ete developpees de maniere adaptee aux specificites des macroalgues et a celles du milieu environnant. Un algorithme sequentiel de discrimination en ceintures homogenes a ete etabli. Cet algorithme est base a la fois sur une analyse de la signature spectrale mesuree au sol et sur la configuration spectrale d'acquisition des images. Son application a permis de distinguer deux groupes d'algues brunes, a. Nodosum / fucus spp d'une part et h. Elongata / l. Digitata de l'autre. Cependant, en raison de l'heterogeneite du milieu littoral, une nouvelle methode plus performante de decomposition des pixels mixtes a ete developpee. Basee sur un modele lineaire de melange des cibles pures, elle fait appel, apres une analyse en composantes principales, a la methode de programmation lineaire appelee algorithme affine et permet de determiner les intervalles de proportions de melange, son utilisation est possible dans d'autres domaines d'application thematique. En zone immergee, l'apport du modele d'attenuation du signal en fonction de la colonne d'eau a egalement pu etre teste. Les resultats des simulations ont permis de determiner les longueurs d'onde optimales ainsi que la profondeur maximale d'identification des principales classes d'algues. L'application a l'image spot a necessite la generation d'un modele numerique de terrain. Les verifications de terrain ont montre la pertinence des methodes developpees et l'analyse des resultats a permis de determiner la superficie des principales ceintures de macroalgues sur le site. Concernant l'approche ecophysiologique, des mesures de biomasse in situ, des mesures d'activite photosynthetique au laboratoire ainsi que l'analyse des teneurs en carbone ont ete effectuees. Pour l'ensemble de ces parametres, des variations saisonnieres et interspecifiques significatives ont ete observees. Les evaluations qualitative et quantitative des principales ceintures de macroalgues ont rendu possible l'extrapolation des parametres de production a l'ensemble du site. Ceci a permis d'estimer le stock en place et d'etablir un bilan global de production potentielle maximale de carbone. Ces valeurs globales ne sont que preliminaires et demandent a etre affinees

Selon certaines estimations, le milieu côtier contribuerait de manière importante au cycle global du carbone. Cependant, malgré son rôle potentiellement important, l'intérêt pour ce milieu est relativement récent. Le but de ce travail est d'étudier le rôle des communautés microbiennes (microphytobenthos et bactéries hétérotrophes) dans le fonctionnement des sédiments meubles intertidaux. Le métabolisme benthique a donc été mesuré à marée basse sur deux sites contrastés (une petite baie intertidale soumise à un gradient environnemental et une plage exposée aux vagues). La production primaire brute (PPB) et la respiration de la communauté benthique (RCB) ont été mesurées in situ à l'interface air-sédiment à l'aide d'une chambre benthique (mesure de la concentration en CO2). La production bactérienne a été mesurée par traçage d'un marqueur radioactif ([methyl-3H]thymidine). Le réseau trophiuqe benthique a été étudié par traçage isotopique du carbone et de l'azote (δ13C et δ15N). Les micro-organismes contribuent majoritairement à la production et à la respiration des sédiments intertidaux. Dans l'Aber de Roscoff, la production des microalgues et des bactéries représente respectivement jusqu'à 88 et 81 % de la production primaire et de la production secondaire totale annuelle. Les micro-organismes jouent donc un rôle prépondérant dans les réseaux trophiques benthiques. Ce rôle varie en fonction du gradient sédimentaire. L'influence du compartiment bactérien sur la production globale du système diminue avec l'envasement. Il est supposé que le rôle des bactéries dans les réseaux trophiques benthiques est influencé par la disponibilité des nutriments
It becomes increasingly recognized that the coastal zone contributes significantly to the global carbon cycle. The interest for this system is relatively recent, although its role is potentially important at the global scale. The present work aimed to study the role of benthic microbial communities (microphytobenthos and heterotrophic bacteria) on the functioning of intertidal soft sediments. Benthic metabolism was measured during low tide at two contrasted sampling sites (a small intertidal estuary characterized by a strong environmental gradient and an exposed sandy beach). The gross primary production (GPP) and benthic community respiration (BCR) were estimated via in situ CO2 fluxes measurements at the air-sediment interface within a benthic chamber. Bacterial carbon production (BP) was measured through incorporation of radiolabeled nucleotide ([methyl-3H]thymidine) into bacterial cells. The benthic food web was studied by a dual stable isotopes analysis. Microbes contribute significantly to the production and respiration in intertidal sediments. In the Roscoff Aber Bay, regarding all the benthic compartments, the production of microalgae and bacterial communities represents respectively up to 88 and 81 % of the total annual primary and secondary productions. Micro-organisms thus play a key role in the benthic food webs. This role varies along the productivity gradient. Resumen
The tribe Hedychieae (ginger lily) is the second largest in the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. I carried out a phylogenetic analysis of the Hedychieae using nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS1, 5.8S and ITS2) and chloroplast DNA (trnL (UAA) 5' exon to trnF (GAA)). The results of these two data sets are in accordance, though with differing levels of resolution. Hedychieae is confirmed to include Zingibereae, the true gingers, and is monophyletic. However, the genera Boesenbergia and Curcuma are apparently not monophyletic. Two major clades are recognised to Hedychieae namely, the 'Curcuma clade' and the 'Hedychium clade'. The 'Curcuma clade' comprises Camptandra, Pyrgophyllum, Stahlianthus and a set of four morphologically very similar genera: Curcuma, Hitchenia, Paracautleya and Smithatris. In this clade, a subclade of Camptandra/Pyrgophyllum is the sister group to a very strongly supported 'Curcuma complex': Curcuma, Hitchenia, Paracautleya, Smithatris and Stahlianthus. Smithatris may be recognised as a distinct genus and sister group to the others in the complex. Curcuma is paraphyletic. Two subclades are found in the complex namely, Stahlianthus/Curcuma subg. Hitcheniopsis, and Hitchenia/Paracautleya/Curcuma subg. Curcuma. The dorsifixed versatile anther of the Curcuma complex has been lost independently in Hitchenia and Stahlianthus, while the basifixed versatile anther has arisen independently in Camptandra and Cautleya/Roscoea. Scanning electron micrographs of anther development in Cautleya spicata show that the appendages develop from the joint connective tissue and thus the anther with the appendages is versatile in mature plant. Observation of the appendages in Curcuma and Paracautleya reveals that the anther is dorsifixed and the appendages are derived from the thecae of the anther.

O Gengibre (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) à uma planta bastante apreciada em todo o mundo, nÃo apenas como um condimento, mas tambÃm por suas importantes propriedades medicinais. Os efeitos comportamentais e neuroquÃmicos do Ãleo essencial do gengibre - OEG foram estudados em camundongos tratados diariamente com o Ãleo essencial de gengibre (OEG 25, 50 e 100 mg/Kg, i.p. e v.o.). No sÃtimo dia de tratamento foram realizados os testes do labirinto em cruz elevado (LCE), campo aberto (CA), rota rod (RR), esquiva-passiva (EP) e teste dos tremores induzidos por oxotremorina. No oitavo dia do protocolo, os animais que receberam OEG (100 mg/Kg, i.p.) foram sacrificados para o estudo dos efeitos neuroquÃmicos do OEG em hipocampo e corpo estriado. Os efeitos tÃxicos do OEG foram estudados em camundongos (tratados com Ãnica administraÃÃo de OEG 200, 400 e 800 mg/Kg, i.p.) e ratos (nos quais foi induzida lesÃo hepÃtica por CCl4, e tratados com OEG 50, 100 e 200 mg/Kg, i.p. em Ãnica administraÃÃo). Os resultados mostraram que o OEG nÃo possui efeito ansiolÃtico de acordo com o modelo do LCE; no CA, o OEG (50 e 100 mg/Kg, i.p.) apresentou efeito sedativo ao reduzir o NC, o NG e NR em 37%, 28% e 75%, respectivamente. Foi observada, tambÃm, a ocorrÃncia de efeito dose-dependente da droga, cujo efeito mÃximo parece ser obtido com a dose de 100 mg/Kg (i.p.). A administraÃÃo oral do OEG tambÃm produziu sedaÃÃo, porÃm o efeito sà foi observado no grupo tratado com a dose maior do Ãleo essencial. No modelo do RR, o OEG nÃo produziu alteraÃÃo significativa na coordenaÃÃo motora dos animais tratados. No modelo da EP, o OEG produziu um dano cognitivo nos animais tratados com a dose de 100 mg/Kg, i.p. e v.o. Mesmo apÃs 24 horas da administraÃÃo da droga, o dano ainda era evidente. Quando associado à escopolamina, o OEG (50 e 100 mg/Kg, i.p. e v.o.) potencializou o efeito amnÃsico da droga. O efeito anticolinÃrgico do OEG (100 mg/Kg, i.p.) foi comprovado ao reverter os tremores induzidos por oxotremorina em camundongos. Em relaÃÃo aos efeitos neuroquÃmicos do OEG em corpo estriado, a droga diminuiu a concentraÃÃo de DA, aumentou NE, DOPAC e 5HT em 40%, 22%, 15% e 81%, respectivamente. No hipocampo observou-se que houve uma diminuiÃÃo de DA, DOPAC e um aumento de 5HT em 75%, 64% e 81%, respectivamente. A diminuiÃÃo de DA no corpo estriado explicaria o efeito sedativo da droga, e o conjunto de alteraÃÃes observadas no hipocampo parece contribuir tambÃm para o efeito amÃsico do OEG. O estudo dos efeitos tÃxicos do OEG revelou que a droga à relativamente segura e destituÃda de efeitos tÃxicos significativos nos protocolos utilizados no presente estudo. A administraÃÃo aguda do Ãleo essencial (200, 400 e 800 mg/Kg, i.p.) nÃo produziu outro efeito sobre os animais, a nÃo ser a sedaÃÃo, efeito jà observado com doses menores do Ãleo essencial. A administraÃÃo diÃria do OEG tambÃm nÃo produziu efeitos tÃxicos alÃm de diarrÃia observada nos animais tratados com a droga nas doses de 50 e 100 mg/Kg, i.p. e v.o. O OEG (200 mg/Kg, i.p.) mostrou-se efetivo ao reverter a lesÃo hepÃtica induzida por CCl4 em ratos. O tratamento com o Ãleo essencial na dose de 200 mg/Kg, i.p. reduziu em 35% e 23% a atividade das enzimas ALT e AST, respectivamente. O OEG parece exercer a aÃÃo hepatoprotetora ao combater a peroxidaÃÃo lipÃdica gerada pelo metabolismo hepÃtico do CCl4 que produz radicais livres, altamente lesivos
Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) is a plant largely used around the world, not just as a spice, but also for its medicinal properties. The behavioral and neurochemical effects were studied in mice daily administered with the essential oil of Ginger (EOG 25, 50 e 100 mg/Kg, i.p. and p.o.). In the 7th day of treatment, it was assessed the elevated-plus maze (EPM), open field (OF) rota rod (RR), passive avoidance (PA) and oxotremorine-induce tremor tests, to evaluate the behavioral effects of the drug. In the 8th day of the protocol, mice that received EOG (100 mg/Kg, i.p.) were killed to study the neurochemical effects of EOG on hipoccampus and striatum. Toxic effects of EOG were studied in mice (that received a single administration of EOG 200, 400 e 800 mg/Kg, i.p.), and rats (with hepatic injury induced by CCl4, and treated with EOG 50, 100 e 200 mg/Kg, i.p. in a single administration). Results showed that OEG does not have anxiolytic effects on EPM test; in OF test, EOG (50 e 100 mg/Kg, i.p.) showed a sedative effect, decreasing the number of crossings, grooming and rearing in 37%, 28% and 75%, respectively, with OEG 100 mg/Kg. It was also observed a dose-dependent effect of the drug, which maximum effect observed with 100 mg/Kg (i.p.) of the drug. The oral administration of EOG also induced a sedative effect, occuring only in the group treated with the highest dose of the essential oil. In RR test, EOG did not induce any significant alteration on motor coordination of the animals. In PA test, EOG produced a cognitive impairment in animals treated with EOG100 mg/Kg, i.p. and p.o. Even 24h after the drug administration, the cognitive impairment was still evident. When associated with scopolamine, EOG (50 e 100 mg/Kg, i.p. and p.o.) potentiated the amnesic effect of scopolamine. The anticholinergic effect of EOG (100 mg/Kg, i.p.) was proved to reverse the tremors induced by oxotremorine in mice. EOG, in striatum decreased DA and increased the concentrations of DOPAC, NE and 5HT in 40%, 15%, 22% and 81%, respectively. In hippocampus, OEG decreased DA, DOPAC and increased 5HT in 75%, 64% e 81%, respectively. The decrease of DA in striatum justifies the sedative effect of the drug and the aterations observed on hipoccampus seem to contribute to the amnesic effect of EOG. The study of toxic effects of EOG showed that the drug is relatively safe and it does not have any toxic effects, according to the protocols established in the present work. The acute administration of the essential oil (200, 400 and 800 mg/Kg, i.p.) did not induce any other toxic effect besides sedation. The daily administration of EOG did not produce any toxic effect, besides the diarrhea, observed in animals that received EOG 50 and 100 mg/Kg, i.p. and p.o. EOG (200 mg/Kg, i.p.) was effective in reversing the hepatic injury induced by CCl4 in rats. The treatment with the essential oil (200 mg/Kg, i.p.) reduced in 35% and 23% the activity of the enzymes ALT and AST, respectively. EOG seems to exert its hepatoprotective action by decreasing lipid peroxidation generated by the hepatic metabolism of CCl4, wich produces extremely danous free radicals

As espécies da família Zingiberaceae são caracterizadas por suas raízes. Constituintes fenóis como curcuminóides e gingeróis destacam-se por suas atividades biológicas. A irradiação de alimentos é um meio de preservação eficiente, porém, é importante garantir que suas propriedades funcionais sejam preservadas. Este trabalho vem avaliar o efeito do processamento por radiação gama de 60Co em doses de 0, 5, 10, 15 e 20kGy sobre espécies de Zingiberaceae: açafrão (Curcuma longa L.), gengibre (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) e zedoária (Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe). A determinação qualitativa do perfil de compostos bioativos foi realizada por cromatografia de camada delgada. A quantificação de compostos fenólicos foi realizada pelo método Folin-Ciocalteu e a avaliação do potencial da atividade antioxidante pelo teste de captação do radical livre [2,2 difenil-1-pricril-hidrazil (DPPH)] e método Rancimat®. A quantificação de curcumina e 6-gingerol foram realizadas por Cromatografia Líquida de Alta Eficiência. Não houve mudança no perfil fitoquímico das espécies após o tratamento por irradiação. Em relação às amostras controle, houve perdas significativas no teor de compostos fenólicos nas amostras de açafrão nas doses de 15kGy e 20kGy. Ocorreu decréscimo significativo da capacidade de captação do DPPH nos extratos de gengibre irradiados e no extrato de zedoária irradiado com 20kGy. O Índice de Atividade Antioxidante foi significativamente menor nos extratos de açafrão irradiados com 5kGy e 15kGy e nos extratos irradiados de zedoária. A quantificação de curcumina foi significativamente menor nos extratos de açafrão irradiados com 15 kGy e não houve diferença significativa na quantificação de 6-gingerol entre os extratos de gengibre. Conclui-se que a tecnologia de processamento de Zingiberaceae por radiação gama pode ser viável para as indústrias. Para segurança da manutenção da atividade antioxidante as doses devem ser de até 10kGy.
The species of Zingiberaceae family are characterized for rhizome. Phenolic constituents like curcuminoids and gingerols have had reports of biological activities. Food irradiation is an effective means of preservation, however it is important to ensure that their functional properties are not compromised. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of gamma radiation from 60Co in doses of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 kGy on species of Zingiberaceae: turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) and zedoaria (Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe). The qualitative determination of bioactive compounds profile was performed by thin layer chromatography. The quantification of phenolic compounds was performed by Folin-Ciocalteu method and assessing the potential of antioxidant activity by the free radical [2,2 difenil-1-pricril-hidrazil (DPPH)] scavenging and by Rancimat® method. The curcumin and 6-gingerol quantification was performed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Compared to control, there were significant losses of total phenolic compounds in turmeric samples irradiated with 15kGy and 20kGy. There were significant decreases in the ability to scavenge DPPH in irradiated ginger extracts and zedoaria extract irradiated with 20kGy. The Antioxidant Activity Index was significantly lower in 5kGy and 15kGy irradiated turmeric extracts and in irradiated zedoaria extracts. The curcumin quantification was significantly lower in 15kGy irradiated turmeric extracts and there was no significant difference in the 6-gingerol quantification between ginger extracts. It is concluded that gamma radiation processing technology in Zingiberaceae can be viable for industry. To maintain safety of antioxidant activity it should be applied doses up 10kGy.

Introdução: Plantas, fungos e bactérias são relatados na literatura como produtores de moléculas oriundas do metabolismo secundário que possuem um vasto leque de atividades biológicas que vão desde atividade antimicrobiana até antitumoral. Em relação as plantas no que diz respeito aos estudos de seus metabólitos secundários/especializados, os óleos essenciais são substâncias naturais ricas em compostos bioativo, sendo os terpenos as moléculas majoritárias nos óleos essenciais, este por sua vez são uma classe de metabólitos que variam de tamanho em função da extensão da cadeia por seus blocos construtores e podendo possuir grupos funcionais que fazem com que a diversidade da atividade biológica seja ainda mais variada. Estes óleos, portanto, possuem potencial para serem usados pela indústria farmacêutica, médica, agronômica entre outras áreas da economia. No que diz respeito ao seu uso dentro da agronomia destaca-se as várias vantagens do uso de óleos essenciais na agricultura, pois são compostos naturais, não deixam resíduos, considerados seguros, de baixo custo e podem ser utilizados pequenas quantidades. Objetivo: Avaliou-se a atividade antifúngica dos óleos essenciais de Zingiber officinale roscoe contra C. cassiicola em condições in vitro. Material e métodos: Nos testes in vitro, foram utilizadas seis concentrações (0,0 µL; 150 µL; 375 µL; 525 µL; 750 µL; 900 µL), com cinco repetições. A determinação antifúngica foi mensurada pela inibição do crescimento micelial, esporulação e germinação. Resultados: As concentrações com maior notoriedade nos resultados foram (750 µL; 900 µL), inibiram 100% o crescimento micelial. Para o ensaio da inibição da esporulação, essas mesmas concentrações obtiveram 100% de inibição. Quanto a inibição da germinação, constatou-se que apenas a concentração de 900 µL, inibiu 100% a germinação de conídios. Conclusão: O óleo essencial obtido do rizoma de Z. officinale roscoe apresentara efeito inibidor significativo do crescimento micelial, esporulação e germinação de Corynespora cassiicola in vitro, indicando um potencial para controle do fungo. Sendo assim estudos posteriores para o desenvolvimento de bioprodutos para o biocontrole do fitopatógeno abre um caminho para o desenvolvimento de uma agricultura mais sustentável.
