Resumen

Infant and under-five mortality rate in the world is still a major health problem that must be resolved immediately. Mother’s health seeking behavior very important to manage the health of his children. Purpose of this study was to investigate health seeking behavior among mothers when their children were sick. This study was descriptive quantitative involved 50 respondents. The results show majority mothers choose to take action when their children are sick with most choosing to take them to health care facilities and do their own treatment. Mothers are expected to always care for their children well and not too late for giving treatment when their children are sick.

Resumen

We aimed to investigate the association between work-time compositions of physical behavior and sick leave trajectories due to musculoskeletal pain over one year. We conducted a secondary analysis using the data of 981 workers in a Danish prospective cohort (DPHACTO 2012–2014). At baseline, we assessed physical behaviors (sitting, standing, light physical activity (LIPA), and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA)) at work and during leisure, using accelerometers. Over 1 year follow-up, workers reported sick-leave days due to musculoskeletal pain at 4-week intervals. Four distinct trajectories of sick leave were previously identified in this cohort (“no sick leave”, “few days—increasing trajectory”, “some days—decreasing trajectory”, “some days—increasing trajectory”), and used as an outcome in multinomial regression models with work-time compositions as predictors, adjusted for compositions of behavior during leisure, age, sex, body mass index, and smoking habits. More time spent sitting relative to the other behaviors was negatively associated with the trajectory of few days—increasing sick leave (p = 0.004), while time in LIPA was positively associated with the trajectory of some days—increasing sick leave (p = 0.009). Standing and MVPA were not significantly associated with sick leave trajectories. In conclusion, work-time compositions with more sitting relative to the other behaviors had lower risk for an increasing trajectory of sick leave due to pain, while compositions with more LIPA had higher risk. This may have implications for prevention of pain-related sick leave in blue-collar workers.

Resumen

In order to improve the quality of healthcare services for Cham adolescents in the coming time, the study describes some health indicators, risk behaviors and using of healthcare services, basing on these, factors relating to healthcare services use are analyzed. This study is part of the state-level study project "Basic and urgent solutions for ethnic minority healthcare in our country at present", The study applied cross-sectional research methodology with the combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis. The author used data collected from 96 participants who are Cham adolescents in An Giang from the original study and analyzed data in both male and female groups, from April 2018 to October 2020. The result shows that the rate of adolescents with diseases within 03 months prior the study is 87.5%; within 12 months prior the study is 1.04% for chronic illness; 2.08% for risk behaviors due to injury; feeling bored, losing concentration in studying and working accounting for 7.29%; the proportion of sick adolescents that take recent medical services is 13%; with no treatment is 20.3%. Basing on this, it is recommended for families and schools to have immediate encouragement and share when they show the signs of boredom, to avoid negative effects on their studies, parents and adolescents should go to medical clinics for treatment to when sick, not treating themseves at home. Resumen

A healthy lifestyle, including health behavior, illness behavior, as well as sick role behaviorplay a key role in managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) as well as limiting its complications. This qualitative descriptive with case study research design utilized a type 2 diabetes mellitus patient who had good Self-Management Diabetes aims to describe the formation of health behavior in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus reviewed by using Protection Motivation Theory (PMT). PMT consists of five components, namely the Severity, Vulnerability, Response Effectiveness, Self Efficacy, and Fear. Results suggest that the five components in PMT can be used to predict behavioral intentions that are highly related to one’s behavior, and the information either from the environment or intrapersonal plays a role in giving results in the formation of behavioral intentions to make changes in lifestyle, which leads to the emergence of health behaviors.

Cerebral malaria is a significant cause of childhood morbidity in our region. The challenges of effective management include time and quality of treatment. The study appraised the health care seeking behavior of caregivers of sick children who developed cerebral malaria, in Zaria, northwestern Nigeria. Caregivers indentified were parents 29 (87.9%) and grandparents 4 (12.1%). Most of them were in the upper social classes. Health care options utilized before presentation at our facility were formal health facility 24 (72.7%), patent medicine seller 12 (36.4%), home treatment 10 (30.3%), and herbal concoction 6 (18.2%) with majority 24 (72.7%) using more than one option. Antimalarial therapy was instituted in 25 (75.6%) of the cases. Mortality was significantly associated with the use of herbal concoction, treatment at a formal health facility and patent medicine seller, multiple convulsions, age less than 5 years, and noninstitution of antimalarial therapy before presentation. The study showed use of inappropriate health care options by caregivers and highlighted the need to pursue an awareness drive among caregivers on the use of health care options.

Bulls (n = 770, average age = 127 days, SD = 53 days of age) were fitted with an activity monitoring device for three months to study if behavior could be used for early detection of diseases. The device measured the number of steps, lying time, lying bouts, and frequency and time of attendance at the feed bunk. All healthy bulls (n = 699) throughout the trial were used to describe the normal behavior. A match-pair test was used to assign healthy bulls for the comparison vs. sick bulls. The model was developed with 70% of the data, and the remaining 30% was used for the validation. Healthy bulls did 2422 ± 128 steps/day, had 28 ± 1 lying bouts/day, spent 889 ± 12 min/day lying, and attended the feed bunk 8 ± 0.2 times/d for a total of 95 ± 8 min/day. From the total of bulls enrolled in the study, 71 (9.2%) were diagnosed sick. Their activities changed at least 10 days before the clinical signs of disease. Bulls at risk of becoming sick were predicted 9 days before clinical signs with a sensitivity and specificity of 79% and 81%, respectively. The validation of the model resulted in a sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of 92%, 42%, and 82 %, respectively, and a 50% false positive and 12.5% false negative rates. Results suggest that activity-monitoring systems may be useful in the early identification of sick bulls. However, the high false positive rate may require further refinement.

Background: In low and middle income countries (LMICs) teachers send home children found sick in class devolving subsequent care to parents; where malaria is endemic, morbidity is high as the most parents fail to access WHO-endorsed rapid diagnostic testing (RDT and prompt treatment with artemisinin combination therapy (ACT). Consequently malaria is the principal reason a child misses school; so, we trained teachers to use RDT to evaluate all sick pupils and give ACT promptly to those positive.Aims: Pre, intra and post intervention evaluation of impact of using the WHO Health Promoting School (HPS) model to empower teachers to provide RDT and ACT and engage and inform pupils about malaria in 4 schools in rural Uganda.Methods: Documenting duration of absence from school as a surrogate measure for morbidity and change in children’s knowledge and reported behaviors regarding malaria. Pre-intervention (year 1) baseline evaluation of days of absence and children’s malaria knowledge/behavior; Intervention (year 2) trained teachers administered RDT in all sick children and treated those positive with ADT; Post-intervention (end of year 3) after schools independently continued RDT/ACT and education on malaria.Results: Pre-intervention <1:5 pupils had basic knowledge about malaria (caused by mosquitos; can be prevented; requires rapid diagnosis and prompt medication). In year 1: 953 of 1764 pupils were sent home due to illness. Mean duration of absence was 6.5 (SD 3.17) school days. In year 2: 1066 of 1774 pupils were sick, all had RDT, 765/1066 (68%) tested positive and received ACT; their duration of absence fell to 0.59 (SD 0.64) school days (p<0.001). By year 2 all children knew the signs and symptoms of malaria and had essential epidemiological knowledge. Twelve months post intervention the universality of this knowledge had been sustained and the whole-school focus on malaria continued. Children reported better health, more consistent attendance and improved academic achievement, and had become proactive in prevention strategies; 6% fewer tested positive for malaria; and key health knowledge was being passed to new pupils.Conclusion: Teacher administered RDT/ACT reduced child morbidity from malaria significantly; essential knowledge was generated and new health practices acquired that changed behaviors. Our WHO HPS model is applicable to other LMICs where malaria is endemic and morbidity high.

Resumen

Although Talcott Parsons’s sick role theory, as described in 1951 in The Social System, has been severely criticized for its inapplicability to chronic illnesses, a portion of the theory is still a relevant and necessary factor in terms of understanding and treating chronic illness today. Using data from the 2012 National Health Interview Survey, this study looks at the individual effects of sex, age, race, cohabitation, education and region of residence on the likelihood of chronically ill patients considering themselves limited in their amount or kind of work as an indicator of sick role adaptation. Results show statistically significant relationships between work limitation and sex, age, cohabitation, education and region of residence, when controlling for the duration of the respondents’ condition. Further evaluation of these results is provided.

It has been well established, in the literature, the association between low health literacy rates and poor health outcomes. With the increase of technology dependence, more people are using the internet to look up health information. Research has shown that shared decision making between providers and patients can improve patients' health outcomes. This research aims to examine whether electronic health (eHealth) literacy impacts patient-provider relationships. This research will also examine how geography specifically state residency impacts eHealth literacy rates. Data collected from a national sampling of online health and medical information users who participated in the Study of Health and Medical Information in Cyberspace (N=710) is used to construct structural equation models from SPSS AMOS v. 20.0. After path analysis, the results shown that white males with higher education were more likely to have higher eHealth literacy rates and that eHealth literacy rates are associated with better self-care, higher patient satisfaction and increased trust in provider. Also, state residency does not have an impact on eHealth literacy rates. eHealth literacy will be significant in patient-provider relationships. Program development should be established on focusing on eHealth literacy across the lifespan. Also, it will be important to review federal policy on technology disbursements in order to achieve national goals on eHealth literacy rates.

The overall aim of this study was to illustrate the organizations importance to female staff within education, health and social care on return to work after long term sick leave due to mental illness. The aim of this study was also to identify improvement opportunities. A qualitative study was made with seven interviewees that had return to work after long term sick leave for mental illness. The material was analyzed with an inducitve thematic method. The main themes that emerged was: Information and consulting, Social support from managers and colleagues, Changed attitude and participation in the rehabilitation process and Improvement opportunities. The main result showed that the social support from managers and colleagues and the changed attitude towards the illness mattered the most to the interviewees for a successful return to work. The result also showed that the interviewees had a great need of information about the sick leave process. According to the interviewees the understanding and knowledge about mental illness has to increase.

In the three chapters of my dissertation, I analyze the individual behaviors including health (vaccination and preventive care) and consumer (financial literacy) behaviors and the corresponding interventions by nonlinear econometric modeling. In the first chapter, I suggest an appropriate econometric model that investigates the effect of paid sick leave on workers' decision to receive the seasonal flu vaccination. For this investigation, I apply a Bayesian non-linear structural regression model with one-outcome and two-endogenous equations. The results of my estimation indicate that having paid sick leave affects workers' vaccination decisions differently based on their income levels. Low-income workers are willing to be vaccinated because they perceive the high cost of claiming paid sick leave. However, high-income workers are willing to be vaccinated because paid sick leave reduces the cost of vaccination for seasonal flu. In the second chapter, I suggest new econometric regression models that investigate the effect of "Don't Know" or "Refuse" (DK/RF) responses on parameter identification. I estimate the effect of group characteristics and financial education on the level of young respondents' objective financial knowledge and find the actual effects and biases by my suggested models. This study examines six questions about personal finance and selects covariates in the 2015 National Financial Capability Study (NFCS). Because these questions include DK/RF responses, a simple regression model that does not consider DK/RF responses could lead to misleading conclusions, such as gender/income difference and educational effectiveness in schools. In the last chapter, I investigate the effect of three health-related interventions including a doctor's recommendation, information about human papillomavirus (HPV), and HPV vaccination, on the misuse of cervical cancer screening including too-early screening, unnecessary HPV test, annual Pap test, and no Pap smear that are not recommended for women younger than 30 years. I examine the National Health Interview Survey conducted in 2015 and applies binary and multinomial logistic regression models. From the estimation result, I observe that doctor's recommendation plays a significant role in increasing the probability of receiving cervical cancer screening while it induces the too-early screening, unnecessary HPV testing, and overuse of Pap smears.

Given the current United States prison population of 1.5 million persons, many states have begun to examine how to effectively reduce correctional expenditures, considering in 2011 healthcare related prison costs increased to approximately eight billion (The Pew Charitable Trusts, 2014). Recent research attributes much of this increase to the prevalence of disease and aging within the prison population (Williams et al., 2012; Dumont et al., 2012; Gallagher, 2001; Ahalt et al., 2013). Alternatively, little attention has been devoted to measuring the disparity in health among minority male inmates or the effects of identifying more cost effective health initiatives that address negative health outcomes. With incarceration and health expenditures rates steadily increasing within the United States, studies have highlighted the positive correlation between incarceration and the costs of inmate health, as well as the implications associated with physical illness and its overarching effects on the performance of correctional health care. This study represents an attempt at bridging the gap between preventative health care and criminal justice efforts within the literature in its examination of the demographics, history of incarceration, chronic illness, and current medical conditions of minority male inmates within the state correctional facilities.

Using matched pairs of schools having a diagnosis of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) and those not identified, and not having the potential of being identified as having the diagnosis, this study examined the relationship between factors assumed or determined to have an impact on a school's ability to carry out its mission as they related to the SBS diagnosis. The factors studied were student average daily attendance (ADA); students' mean standardized test scores in math and reading on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and the Tests of Achievement and Proficiency; the need for students to take prophylactic medications; the rate of staff turnover; the percentages of short term suspensions (less than 10 days), long term suspensions (more than 10 days), and the percentage of recommendations for expulsion; as well as the impact of the public identification of a school as having a diagnosis of SBS on student ADA, mean standardized test scores in math and reading and staff turnover. A factorial ANOVA model (2 by 4) for repeated measures revealed no statistical significance for main or interaction effects on any of the six hypotheses addressed.

Introduction: Due to the high prevalence of smoking in China, exposure to second hand smoke (SHS) is a serious public health issue. However, school-aged children’s behavioral responses to SHS exposure and the associated factors are unclear. Aims: This study aims to (a) identify the sources and settings of SHS exposure among school-aged sick children and their mothers in Guangzhou, China; (b) describe the behavioral responses of those children and mothers when exposed to SHS; and (c) examine the personal and environmental factors associated with children’s responses to SHS exposure. Methods: Qualitative and quantitative methods were combined in this study. Forty-five in-depth individual interviews were conducted to investigate sick school-aged children and their mothers’ understanding of and responses to SHS. A pilot survey was used to assess the validity and reliability of the questionnaire and the feasibility of the study. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with the children and their mothers at three hospitals in Guangzhou in 2012. All sick children who were aged 6 to 12 years, able to communicate in Mandarin Chinese, and not acutely or severely ill, along with their nonsmoking mothers, were invited to join this study. Results: A total of 339 pairs of sick children and their mothers were included in the data analysis. Of these pairs, 169 (49.9%) lived with smokers. All sick children and their mothers experienced high-level SHS and third hand smoke (THS) exposure inside or outside the home. Those living with nonsmokers were also at risk of household SHS and THS exposure from guests. Most of the sick school-aged children were unaware of the dangers of SHS and THS, while the mothers had a better understanding of SHS and THS. The majority of children would adopt self-protective behaviors when exposed to SHS. The regression model for children’s behavioral responses to SHS exposure by family smokers found two significant factors: amount of social support and family smoke-free policy. Five factors were associated with children’s behavioral responses to SHS exposure by guest smokers, including boys, living with smokers, amount of social support, family members informed of the dangers of smoking, and fathers protecting children from SHS. The amount of social support, and fathers protecting children from SHS were also associated with children’s behavioral responses to SHS exposure by stranger smokers. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first study to describe self-protective behavioral responses to SHS exposure among sick school-aged children in mainland China and the personal and environmental factors associated with these responses. Boys, living with smokers, and a partial smoke-free policy at home were negatively related to children’s responses to SHS exposure; however, more information about smoking, fathers’ protection from SHS, and information about the harms of smoking by family members were associated with greater self-protection among sick school-aged children. Therefore, multiple-direction interventions should be considered for children’s health promotion about smoking and SHS.

Resumen

Presenteeism is expressed as being at work physically but not mentally. It is defined as the fact that employees are physically present in the workplace but do not fully perform the expected performance for various reasons, or that employees continue to come to work despite being sick. In the literature, presenteeism is predominantly associated with health, but also it is emphasized that individual, organizational, and environmental factors are also important for this problem. In this chapter, the causes of presenteeism were examined under three headings: individual, organizational, and environmental. In the tourism industry, presenteeism can lower productivity and business competitiveness and may cause guest dissatisfaction as a result of the service that cannot be provided correctly. Improvement practices such as leave of absence with pay when employees become ill, improvements in medication and treatment aids, paid leave on sick days, and flexible working hours will ensure the reduction of presenteeism.

Resumen

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health («Folkehelseinstituttet») (FHI) states that Norway faces several major health challenges. Sick leave is 6%, costing companies and the state tens of billions annually. The FHI proposes, with the support of the Public Health Act («Folkehelseloven») and the national strategy «HelseOmsorg21», that preventive measures should be developed against the negative lifestyle factors to decrease the number of new cases in the life-reducing disease group. The purpose of this chapter is to answer why and how organizations should develop a healthy performance culture through strategic health care management supported by additional health, environmental and safety («HMS») directives. Based on cross-disciplinary theorizing, a definition of a healthy performance culture is proposed. This type of culture consists of dimensions such as health objectives, shared health values, supportive health environment, openness, goal-oriented and value-based behavior of leaders and employees, and a winning mindset. The chapter also underscores the importance of the related individual HR drivers like fun at work, engagement, physical and mental health. The company cases Schibsted/VG, Gjensidige, Findus and Wilhelmsen and findings from in-depth interviews show that health-promoting activities may be the result of a HR strategy, or just individuals’ initiative and voluntariness among the companies’ sports enthusiasts. The case of Findus exemplifies an ongoing development toward a healthy performance culture and the importance of leaders’ participation. The findings support the theoretical model showing the relations between a healthy performance culture, individual HR drivers and organizational performance. A framework for developing a healthy performance culture is presented.

Resumen

Silicon carbide (SiC) and SiC matrix composites (SiCf/SiC) are being investigated as potential fuel cladding materials for advanced PWRs in order to improve the safety of nuclear power plants. The conceptual design of multi-layered SiC cladding (consisting of a monolithic SiC layer, SiCf/SiC composite layer and a monolithic SiC coating layer) has been investigated to meet the fuel requirements of both the strength and impermeability. A stress distribution model of the triple-layered SiC is developed on the basis of the theory of thermo-elasticity mechanics, taking radial temperature gradient and swelling effects into account as well. The heat transferring behavior of the cladding is investigated by analyzing the temperature distribution under steady conditions. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) code ANSYS is used to obtain the stress and temperature nephogram of multi-layered SiC fuel cladding under simulated steady conditions. Compared with the results of ANSYS, the stress distribution model and temperature distribution is validated.

Experimental research was performed to study the anisotropic elastoplastic responses of SiCp/Al composite sheets. To investigate the effects of the composite processing, two sets of specimens cut from the heat-treated and as-rolled composite sheets are tested using a universal material-testing machine. The dependence of the strength, plastic flow, and strain ratios on the rolling angles are discussed in detail. To model the phenomena observed in the experiments, a micromechanics based damage framework is developed. The interfacial debonding and the rolling angle’s effects are integrated into this model. Good consistence between the experimental results and the analytical predications shows the validity of the theoretical model.

Micro-channel heat sinks are currently at the forefront of cooling technologies for computer chips where the input heat flux is projected to exceed 100 W/cm2 [1, 2]. The quest for better heat-sink designs has produced different ideas, one of which is the idea of using multi-layered micro-channel heat sinks [3, 4]. The objectives of the present investigation were to conduct a detailed numerical study of the hydrodynamic and thermal behavior of a two-layered micro-channel heat sink and to compare the performance of the two-layered heat sink with that of a single-layered sink under laminar flow conditions.

A novel heatsink based on a multilayer stack of thin metal plates with staggered honeycomb cells microchannels was investigated in this paper. A series of working-parametric tests such as different heat sink pipe diameter and pumping power were conducted for the microchannel cooling system to determine the heat transfer performance under small flow rate conditions. For the double fluid flow inlets and outlets heatsink design, experimental results showed that more uniform substrate temperature distribution was obtained than the single inlet and outlet ones. It showed that the heatsink design provided a good choice for electronic chips cooling applications.

Resumen

Efficient analysis of heat sink performance is a crucial step in the optimization process of such devices. Accurate analysis of these complex geometric systems with CFD and FE methods requires fine meshes, which imply significant computational time. In this study, Volume Averaging Theory (VAT) is rigorously applied to obtain a geometrically simplified but physically accurate model for any periodic heat sink geometry. The governing equations are averaged over a Representative Averaging Volume (REV) to obtain a set of integro-differential equations. Some information about lower level phenomena is lost in every averaging process and a closure scheme is required to model these behaviors. Experimental data for friction factor and Nusselt number in an REV is used to close the set of PDEs. This mathematical process replaces the complex geometry of the heat sink with a fictitious continuous medium and smoothens the quantities of interest throughout the system. These system features allow the use of a global Fourier-Galerkin method to efficiently solve the resulting equations and accurately predict the performance of the system. The effectiveness of the method is proven by applying it to model thermal behavior for laminar flow over an air-cooled pin-fin heat sink and a water-cooled micro-channel heat sink. The convergence in the Nusselt number in the case of constant heat flux is found to be quadratic with respect to the number of basis functions. The accuracy of the method is validated by comparing the numerical results obtained to existing experimental data. The maximum difference between the predicted Nusselt number and the experimental measurements is found to be only 4% for both cases.

Metal foams are structures of a cellular nature that contain a high percentage of porosity that can be produced in either a closed or open cell forms. The use of metal foams in engineering applications has increased significantly over the last decade due to their enhanced mechanical and thermal properties. An innovative approach for three-dimensional (3D) detailed finite element modeling of open cell metal foam has been taken to capture the versatile nature of metal foams’ geometry and predicting its thermal performance. The interior complex geometry of metal foams has limited studies to create computational model via common approaches. Therefore, not much computational work has been done in open cell metal foam applications. To overcome this difficulty, computed tomography (CT) scan has been used to extract the 3D structure surface model with extreme precision. Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software has been used for “stitching” and “healing” of the CT scan model before importing it to a finite element domain. The 3D computational model is used in a heat sink application and is calibrated against experimental results for the temperature distribution of one case. The validated and calibrated model is then used for simulating different metal foam heat sink cases to assess the thermal and mechanical behavior under different conditions.

In a design competition by the mechanical engineering students at Carnegie Mellon University, which was the design of heat sinks for electronic cooling applications, twenty seven heat sinks were designed and tested for thermal performance. A heat sink with three rows of 9, 8, and 9 dimpled rectangular fins (staggered configuration) demonstrated the best performance in the test. This heat sink even had the least total volume (about 25% less than the set value). This paper reports on an effort made to verify and quantify the role of dimples on heat transfer enhancement of the heat sinks. This includes measurements and simulations of the thermal fluid properties of the heat sinks with and without dimples. Results of both the measurements and simulations indicate that dimples do in fact improve heat transfer capability of the heat sinks. Albeit, dimpled fins cause more pressure drop in air along the heat sink. Keeping the total volume of the heat sink and the height of the fins constant and changing the number of the fins and their arrangement show that there exist an optimum number of fins for the best performance of the heat sink. However, this number of fins is different for inline and staggered arrangements. To check the role of the roughness type on the heat transfer behavior of the fins, a heat sink with twenty-seven bumped fins with inline arrangement was also simulated. Results indicated that bumps increase both thermal resistance and pressure drop relative to that of the heat sinks with plain fins.

This work presents a numerical study of the thermal and hydrodynamic behavior of a pin-fin heat sink where deflectors are placed along the flow of the coolant air; the effect of the arrangement of the fins and deflectors in the global performance of the heat sink is investigated. The fin geometry analyzed is rectangular, and the arrangement of the fins is inline. The heat sink is placed in a channel in which air flows, and a constant heat flux is applied at the bottom wall of the heat sink with values equivalent to the heat fluxes generated by current electronic devices. Deflectors are placed in the top of the channel in order to drive the air flow into the front and end of the heat sink. The results for the Nusselt number and for the pressure drop along the heat sink are reported. The best dimension of deflectors and pitch for the arrangement based on the thermal and hydraulic performance is attained.

A computational study is conducted to explore thermal performances of natural convection hybrid fin heat sinks (HF HSs). The proposed HF HSs are a hollow hybrid fin heat sink (HHF HS) and a solid hybrid fin heat sink (SHF HS). Parametric effects such as a fin spacing, an internal channel diameter, a heat dissipation on the performance of HF HSs are investigated by CFD analysis. Study results show that the thermal resistance of the HS increases while the mass-multiplied thermal resistance of the HS decreases associated with the increase of the channel diameter. The results also shows the thermal resistance of the SHF HS is 13% smaller, and the mass-multiplied thermal resistance of the HHF HS is 32% smaller compared with the pin fin heat sink (PF HS). These interesting results are mainly due to integrated effects of the mass-reduction, the surface area enhancement, and the heat pumping via the internal channel. Such better performances of HF HSs show the feasibility of alternatives to the conventional PF HS especially for passive cooling of LED lighting modules.
