Resumen
This paper investigates the effect of both FS and HR slack together on firm performance and how different levels of these slack resources affect performance of private-owned enterprises (POEs) and state-owned enterprises (SOEs). Hypotheses are tested using a longitudinal data set of 11,985 listed Chinese companies from 2000 to 2009. Findings reveal that the unabsorbed-financial slack and HR slack show an inverse U shape relationship on firm performance for both POEs and SOEs. However, a less-negative interaction occurs for unabsorbed-financial and HR slacks for POEs. The absorbedfinancial and HR slacks also shows an inverse U shape relationship on performance and this relationship does not have a significant negative effect on SOE’s performance. The article concludes with theoretical contributions and practical implications of the findings.

Resumen
The Slack and Slick genes encode potassium channels that are very widely expressed in the central nervous system. These channels are activated by elevations in intracellular sodium, such as those that occur during trains of one or more action potentials, or following activation of nonselective cationic neurotransmitter receptors such as AMPA receptors. This review covers the cellular and molecular properties of Slack and Slick channels and compares them with findings on the properties of sodium-activated potassium currents (termed KNa currents) in native neurons. Human mutations in Slack channels produce extremely severe defects in learning and development, suggesting that KNa channels play a central role in neuronal plasticity and intellectual function.

Resumen
Humid coastal dune slacks are an endangered habitat in Northwestern Europe. In the UK, dune slacks are currently classified as being in ‘unfavourable’ condition, with projected decrease in England of up to 30% by 2036. Studies in mainland Europe suggest that regional factors (e.g. slack area, age, and isolation) are more important than local factors (e.g. soil, pH, soil nutrient and water status) in driving successional vegetation processes in coastal slacks. However, this has never been tested for the UK, where approximately 14% of European slacks occur. We used previously established survey protocols to test whether regional factors are more important than local factors in UK coastal slacks, along the Sefton Coast in NW England. We found that slack area and slack age were more important than local factors in driving plant community composition and species richness. We also showed that higher levels of management, such as active grazing and invasive shrub and tree removal, are effective in increasing soil moisture levels in slacks. Our results suggest that similar successional processes are likely to be important in slacks in the NW of England, compared to mainland Europe.

Resumen
This paper examines whether organizational slack is associated with firms’ voluntary disclosure of corporate social responsibility (CSR), sustainability, and integrated reporting. This is an empirical research study using archival data based on a sample of public firms listed on the Korea Exchange from 2005 to 2016. We manually collected CSR reports, sustainability reports, and integrated reports (IRs) that were published during our sample period. We found that human resource slack was highly related to the publication of corporate social responsibility, sustainability, and integrated reports. Firms initiating such disclosure in their industry groups were likely to have slack in permanent employees as well as financial slack. Additionally, integrated reporting, which is a recent improvement in the delivery of financial and non-financial information, was positively associated with an excess number of regular employees. This study provides evidence that slacks in regular employees are related to a greater degree of voluntary disclosure via standalone CSR or sustainability reporting as well as integrated reporting. These findings suggest that slacks or excess human resources play a crucial role in voluntary corporate disclosure.

Resumen
ABSTRACT Purpose: The goal of this study is to identify the relationship of absorbed, non-absorbed and potential slack with the innovation of companies of sectors members of the sectoral ranking of innovation in the Brazilian Index of Innovation (IBI) listed in BM&FBovespa. Originality/gap/relevance/implications: Organizational slack and innovation have been objects of study internationally, but still represent a research gap in Brazil. Also there were not identified studies using the intangible asset to measure innovation and the possible relations with the organizational slack measures. This theme can also support the strategic activities of organizations, such as contributing to the creation of competitive advantage. Key methodological aspects: Descriptive research with quantitative approach was carried out using financial data of 208 companies listed in BM&FBovespa classified as innovative according to the Index Brazil of Innovation. Information regarding intangible assets, used as metrics to measure the innovation, was collected from the Notes; and the data to calculate the measures of organizational slack were collected from Economática® database. Summary of key results: In the application of the panel data model, the results demonstrate a significant relationship between organizational slack and innovation. The potential and absorbed slacks impact significantly and positively the innovative process. Non-absorbed slack influences positively, but with relatively smaller impact compared to other measures. Key considerations/conclusions: It is concluded that the results indicate a relationship in greater degree of absorbed and potential slack and to a lesser degree of non-absorbed slack with the innovation of the companies surveyed.

Resumen
This study aims to analyze the effect of participatory budgeting variables and information asymmetry on budgetary slack, and to analyze the effect of participatory budgeting and information asymmetry variables on company performance through budgetary slack. This research is causal (causal research). The study population is all offices of PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero) in Indonesia. The sample consists of a number of members selected from the population. The sampling technique used in this study is non probability sampling, that is total sampling. In this research a descriptive statistical analysis will be performed using path analysis. The results showed that Participatory Budgeting and Information Asymmetry had a significant positive effect on budgetary slack as well as on company performance. The Slcak budget has a significant positive effect on company performance. However, the Budgetary Slack in this research model did not succeed in mediating the relationship between Participatory Budgeting and Information Asymmetry on company performance.

Resumen
This study aims to examine the effect of debt covenant slack on the value relevance of accounting information, and whether earnings management works as an intervening variable. A total of 40 non-financial companies listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2013 to 2017 were selected as sample. Three hypotheses were tested using partial least square and analyzed via path analysis. This study found that debt covenant slack positively affects the value relevance of accounting information. Possibly, the tendency of small debt covenant slacks in the firms causing the information of firms’ performance to be less relevant for the investor because they believe that the firms will prioritize the debt payments rather than dividends. Furthermore, empirical evidence from this study indicates that debt covenant slack affects investors’ decision in using firms’ performance information. However, no statistically significant effect was found neither on the relationship between debt covenant slack and earnings management nor on the relationship between earnings management and the value relevance of accounting information. Hence, earnings management is not an intervening variable in the effect of debt covenant slack on the value relevance of accounting information.

Resumen
The function of budgetary controls is to control the resource allocation within companies. It can also be an instrument for measure and control subordinates and/or business units’ performance (Van der Stede 2001). This paper concerns the latter; when the budgetary control function is used to measure and control subordinates performance based on budget. Previous research in this area has not yet accomplished to explain the effects of tight budgetary control which Hartman (2000) considers as the main issue to be concerned about in management accounting research. Previous research has presented contradictory findings regarding tight budgetary control explained by positive effects as well as negative effects during the last decades. Further, these findings provide us with contradictory results in which budget participation is initiating intended effects or unintended effects such as budgetary slack. With this in mind we have invented a model including these variables, intended to find the context and effects. This study includes subordinates from different companies within Sweden and it is based upon a self-completion survey. Our intention with this paper is to present an explanation according to budgetary slack. The result shows that tight budgetary control does affect the degree of slack as well as participation do. Further, we present evidence that high participation moderates the effect of tight budgetary control on slack.

Cakir, M. Selim. "A cognitive approach to organizational slack : development and validation of the Attitudes Towards Slack Resources Questionnaire (ATSRQ)". Thesis, University of Warwick, 2018. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/98837/.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis integrates the cognitive modelling perspective into the literature on organizational slack by developing and validating a questionnaire-based instrument which measures managers’ attitudes towards slack resources. The literature is deeply polarized regarding the role played by slack in organizations. Researchers debate whether organizational slack is a sure sign of inefficiency in the workplace or a necessary cost to enhance the competitiveness of firms. Empirical studies have not been able to resolve this conceptual debate as the results are highly diverse. In order to explain conflicting empirical findings, scholars have made untested assumptions about the interaction between organizational slack and managerial psychology. However, despite repeated calls, managerial cognition regarding organizational slack remains a black box in empirical studies. This thesis addresses this shortfall in the literature by developing a new measurement instrument which reveals managers’ attitudes towards slack resources. The instrument, i.e. the Attitudes Towards Slack Resources Questionnaire (ATSRQ), consists of three five-item subscales reflecting attitudes towards HR, financial, and physical slack and a combined higher-order scale measuring overall attitudes towards slack. It is developed and validated by means of a rigorous and systematic paradigm. The psychometric properties of the ATSRQ are assessed with five empirical studies which provide evidence for the internal consistency reliability, test-retest reliability, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and criterion-related validity of the ATSRQ. Results of the empirical studies suggest that managers’ attitudes towards slack resources are related to some key organizational phenomena, such as managers’ trust in employees. The results also reveal that managerial attitudes towards slack resources predict various employee-related outcomes, including leader-member exchange, perceived organizational support, work autonomy, access to resources, and decision latitude. The thesis concludes with a discussion of results, as well as limitations and future research directions.

Resumen
This thesis examines the associations between organisational slack, that pool of actual or potential cushion of resources of an organisation, and executive discretion - the executives’ latitude for strategic action. Bourgeois and Singh (1983), George (2005), Sharfman et al. (1988) and Sharma (2000) have referred to slack as having a discretionary dimension because its ‘ease of recovery’ varies depending on where it is gained from. For the obverse of this association, slack contributes to resource availability in the task environment and therefore executive discretion (Hambrick & Finkelstein, 1987). However until now, this bi-direction association has been largely unexplored empirically. This thesis contributes to both fields by bringing them together to examine and measure aspects of these interactions. These constructs are applied to the annual reports of U.S. firms by measuring industry level discretion using content analysis of presidents’ letters to shareholders and industry average slack using financial ratios. Correlations show that industries with higher levels of slack enjoy greater industry level discretion. However the associations between slack types and industry level discretion are not uniform suggesting that the discretionary dimension of slack is influenced by the task environment and industry context. The present study replicated Keegan and Kabanoff’s (2007) method to examine slack within industries but could not extend their results to available and recoverable slack, which suggest a curvilinear relationship between potential slack and executive discretion. The limited sub-industry results offer opportunity for further research as does the idea of applying the same research question to the organisational and individual level studies of different cohorts of firms and industries. Future efforts should also improve the measurement of the slack construct.

A myriad of uncontrollable factors in airline operations make delays and disruptions unavoidable. Most conventional scheduling models, however, ignore the presence of uncertainties in actual operations in order to limit the complexity of the problem. This leads to schedules that are prone to delays and disruptions. As a result, there has been wide interest recently in building robustness into airline schedules. In this work, we investigate slack allocation approaches for robust airline schedule planning. In particular, we propose three models: aircraft re-routing model, flight schedule re-timing model, and block time adjustment model, together with their variants. Using data from an international carrier, we evaluate the impacts of the resulting schedules on various performance metrics, including passenger delays. The results show that minor modifications to an original schedule can significantly improve the overall performance of the schedule. Through empirical results, we provide a comprehensive discussion of model behaviors and how an airline's characteristics can affect the strategy for robust scheduling.

Heine, Christian P. "Simulated Response of Degrading Hysteretic Joints With Slack Behavior". Diss., Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28576.

Texto completo
Resumen
A novel, general, numerical model is described that is capable of predicting the load-displacement relationship up to and at failure of multiple-bolt joints in timber of various configurations. The model is not tied to a single input function and bolt holes are permitted to be drilled oversize resulting in a slack system. The model consists of five parts. A new mathematical hysteresis model describes the stiffness of the individual bolt at each time step increment and accounts for non-linear and slack behavior; a mechanically-based structural stiffness model explains the interaction of one bolt with another bolt within a joint; an analytically-based failure model computes the stresses at each time step and initiates failure if crack length equals fastener spacing; a stochastic routine accounts for material property variation; and a heuristic optimization routine estimates the parameters needed. The core model is a modified array of differential equations whose solution describes accurate hysteresis shapes for slack systems. Hysteresis parameter identification is carried out by a genetic algorithm routine that searches for the best-fit parameters following evolutionary principles (survival of the fittest). The structural model is a linear spring model. Failure is predicted based on a newly developed 'Displaced-Volume-Method' in conjunction with beam on elastic foundation theory, elastic theory, and a modified Tsai-Wu Failure criterion. The devised computer model enhances the understanding of the mechanics of multiple-bolt joints in timber, and yields valid predictions of joint response of two-member multiple-bolt joints. This research represents a significant step towards the simulation of structural wood components.

Resumen
Estimating accurately the natural frequencies of electrically actuated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been the center of research attention over the past few years. Despite this important topic, a robust knowledge is still missing to understand the role of various physical parameters that affect the natural frequencies, such as the stretching of doubly-clamped CNTs, the DC electrostatic force, and the curvature of CNTs with slacks. In this investigation, we use a 2D nonlinear curved beam model (arch) to simulate the coupled in-plane and the out-of-plane motions of a CNT with curvature (slack). We calculate the variation of its natural frequencies and mode-shapes with the level of slack and the DC electrostatic load. Toward this, we derive a reduced-order model using a multi-mode Galerkin procedure based on the mode shapes of the straight unactuated CNT. We calculate the natural frequencies of the slacked CNT for a given voltage by substituting the static solution into the Jacobian of the reduced-order-model and then finding the corresponding eigenvalues. We show various scenarios of mode crossing and mode veering as the levels of slack and DC load are varied.

Resumen
Email is the standard in communication with university students; as a one-to-one communication device, students repeat their doubts along multiple messages, multiplying the teacher's work and preventing the participation and learning of other students. The topic forums on virtual campuses allow better a management of doubts but require the active participation of all the students to achieve a final outcome. We propose to abandon the email and traditional forums of the campuses and enter tools with a higher professional profile to manage communication with the students. The results of this first experience, carried out with more than 90 postgraduate students, encourage its mass employment in both undergraduate and postgraduate. The survey conducted over 102 students in three different subjects of two different MSc shows how Slack, the tool we used, has been highly valued, with differences depending on the studies but neither on the gender nor on the intensity of use of the social networks.
