Resumen
Although invasive species constitute a major threat to global biodiversity, the introduction of toxic prey into naïve predator faunas may become particularly destructive. An example of such an introduction was the deliberate release of the highly toxic cane toad (Bufo marinus) to the toad-free Australian continent in 1935. Naïve large Australian varanid lizards have recently been shown to suffer a massive increase in mortality (> 95%) when attempting to feed on this toxic amphibian. The high susceptibility of Australian varanids to toad toxin is caused by minor mutations in the sodiumpotassium- ATPase enzyme. In the present study we show that Komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis) have similar mutations within this enzyme as observed in Australian varanids demonstrating that dragons are extremely susceptible to toad toxin. During the last decade the black-spined toad (Bufo melanostictus) has been able to invade areas close to the five toad-free islands constituting the habitat of Komodo dragons. An invasion of highly toxic black-spined toads into dragon habitats may therefore cause similar dramatic increase in dragon mortality as recorded in Australian varanids imperiling the long-term survival of this giant and iconic lizard.

Resumen
With increasing numbers of Asian Black-spined Toads (Duttaphrynus melanostictus) found at Australian seaports and airports since 1999, this species could become Australia’s second invasive toad. Introductions of D. melanostictus have already occurred in other countries, with inadvertent stowaways the principal cause. Three recent incursions have been documented in suburban areas of Sydney and Melbourne.

Resumen
Anthropogenic alterations of habitats can have detrimental consequences for biodiversity. Documenting these effects require monitoring in multiple sites that vary in the degree of alterations over long temporal scales, a task that is challenging. Yet, simple naturalist observations can reveal major ongoing events affecting wild populations, and serve as a basis for further investigations. We quantified breeding parameters of spined toad (Bufo spinosus) populations from forested (preserved) and agricultural (altered) habitats. We found that reproduction did not occur at the sites surrounded by agriculture, while it occurred successfully in ponds from forests. Males were present at all sites, but females, amplexus, egg strings and tadpoles remained absent from agricultural sites. Observations made at the same sites indicated that breeding occurred during previous years. Our observations of habitat- and sex-specific lack of reproduction may have critical consequences for the persistence of populations of a widespread amphibian species in agricultural areas.

Resumen
The use of hyper-variable markers across species is often hindered by low cross-species amplification success, a reduced level of polymorphism or a high frequency of null alleles. However, optimizing sets of reliable and informative markers that can be consistently amplified and scored across taxa is key to address questions about patterns of genetic diversity and structure, hybridization and speciation. Here we present 14 newly developed microsatellite markers in the Spined toad (Bufo spinosus), assess their polymorphism in two Iberian populations and test for cross-species amplification in the closely related Common toad (Bufo bufo). We then use the 12 loci co-amplifying in both species to the study of a morphologically intermediate population (Moyaux) from the contact zone in northwest France as well as reference populations of the two species from both sides of the contact zone. Individuals from Moyaux had mtDNA haplotypes of the two species and were identified as hybrids in analyses with software NewHybrids. These results provide solid evidence for ongoing hybridization between B. bufo and B. spinosus, with no apparent restrictions to gene flow.

Resumen
We document the distribution of the common toadBufo bufoand the spined toadB. spinosusat their contact zone across France with data from a mitochondrial DNA RFLP assay, complementing similar work including nuclear markers in the northwest and southeast of France and in Italy. We also reconstruct geographical clines across the species’ contact zone in central France.Bufo bufois found in the north-eastern half of France.Bufo spinosusis found in the south-western complement. The contact zone they form runs from the Atlantic coast near Caen, France, to the Mediterranean coast near Savona, Italy, and has a length of over 900 km. In central FranceB. bufoandB. spinosusengage in a hybrid zone with a unimodal genetic signature. Hybrid zone width is ca. 10 km at mitochondrial DNA and averages at 61 km for four nuclear loci. The hybrid zone is distinctly asymmetric with a signature ofB. spinosusinB. bufoand not the other way round. We attribute this observation toB. bufomoving southwards at the expense ofB. spinosus, with introgression in the direction of the advancing species. We noted substantial geographic variation in characters for species identification. Morphological species identification performs well in France, but breaks down in Italy. Mitochondrial DNA is inconclusive in south-eastern France and Italy. The nuclear genetic markers perform consistently well but have not yet been applied to the zone in full. Possible, but surely heterogeneous ecological correlates for the position of the hybrid zone are mountains and rivers.

Resumen
The black-spined toad, Duttaphrynus melanostictus, is widespread in South and South-East (SE) Asia, although recent molecular analyses have revealed that it represents a species complex (here called the D. melanostictus complex). Invasive populations of this toad have been detected in Madagascar since, at least, 2014. We here trace the origin of this introduction based on mitochondrial DNA sequences of 340 samples. All 102 specimens from Madagascar have identical sequences pointing to a single introduction event. Their haplotype corresponds to a lineage occurring in Cambodia, China, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and some locations of eastern Myanmar and northern Malaysia, here named the SE Asian lineage. Within this lineage, specimens from one location in Cambodia and three locations in Vietnam have the same haplotype as found in Madagascar. This includes Ho Chi Minh City, which has a major seaport and might have been the source for the introduction. Species distribution models suggest that the current range of the Madagascan invasive population is within the bioclimatic space occupied by the SE Asian lineage in its native range. The potential invasion zone in Madagascar is narrower than suggested by models from localities representing the full range of the D. melanostictus complex. Thus, an accurate taxonomy is essential for such inferences, but it remains uncertain if the toad might be able to spread beyond the potential suitable range because (1) knowledge on species-delimitation of the complex is insufficient, and (2) the native range in SE Asia might be influenced by historical biogeography or competition.

Resumen
Abstract Reproductive success is often related to parental quality, a parameter expressed through various traits, such as site selection, mate selection and energetic investment in the eggs or progeny. Owing to the complex interactions between environmental and parental characteristics occurring at various stages of the reproductive event, it is often complicated to tease apart the relative contributions of these different factors to reproductive success. Study systems where these complex interactions are simplified (e.g. absence of parental care) can help us to understand how metrics of parental quality (e.g. gamete and egg quality) influence reproductive success. Using such a study system in a common garden experiment, we investigated the relationships between clutch hatching success (a proxy of clutch quality) and offspring quality in an amphibian species lacking post-oviposition parental care. We found a relationship between clutch quality and embryonic development duration and hatchling phenotype. We found that hatchling telomere length was linked to hatching success. These results suggest that clutch quality is linked to early life traits in larval amphibians and that deciphering the influence of parental traits on the patterns we detected is a promising avenue of research.

Intensive agriculture homogenizes landscape and reduces the proportion of natural habitats, thus altering wildlife ecology. In addition to landscape fragmentation, intensive agriculture is responsible for the release of chemicals into non-target environments, such as aquatic environments, which are particularly affected by this contamination. The transfer of these molecules to aquatic environments occurs though runoff or soil erosion. Pesticides can accumulate in large quantities in slow-flux habitats such as ponds and vernal-pools, potentially creating ecological traps for the species that inhabit them. Amphibians are sentinel species of their ecosystems and are particularly sensitive to agricultural chemicals, especially because of their particularly permeable skin. In addition, part of their complex (biphasic) life cycle takes place in lentic environments, which are likely to be highly contaminated. During my thesis, I studied the effects of agricultural activities on an amphibian species that is widespread in agricultural and forest environments, the spined toad (Bufo spinosus). To understand the consequences of agricultural activities on the ecology and physiology of this species, I studied the effects of habitat characteristics (structure and contamination) on different developmental stages (embryos, larvae, adults). To achieve these objectives, I used two methodological approaches: (i) a field approach to measure morphological and physiological differences of adult male populations in contrasting habitats; and, (ii) an experimental approach under controlled conditions to distinguish the effects of exposure period and concentration of different contaminants on key developmental phases of this species. The results indicate that male adult populations show different allometric relationships depending on the habitat (agricultural, intermediate or forest) and that these differences probably result from evolutionary mechanisms related to phenotypic plasticity. Indeed, preliminary population genetic analyses do not detect genetic divergence among the populations studied, suggesting that physical or chemical habitat characteristics result in different response norms among populations. The observed allometric relationships could be the result, at least in part, of developmental plasticity due to environmental contamination within breeding sites. Studies of exposure to two herbicides (a legacy contaminant metabolite and an emerging contaminant) over ontogeny in this species showed us that contamination results in variability in morphological (size and body proportion), physiological (oxidative stress) and behavioral responses that suggest that there may be endocrine disruption mechanisms operating at very low concentrations. In addition, contamination negatively influences fitness proxies in exposed individuals (size and mass at metamorphosis, survival) which could ultimately alter recruitment, reproduction and population sustainability of spined toads

Resumen
This study examined the effects of temperature and chronic hypoxia (CH) on pH/CO2- sensitive fictive breathing, and central pH/CO2 chemosensitivity, in cane toads (Bufo marinus). Toads were exposed to CH (10% or 15% O2) or control conditions (21% O2) for 10 days at either room temperature (controls), 10°C or 30°C following which in vitro brainstem-spinal cord preparations were used to examine central pH/CO2-sensitive fictive breathing (i.e., motor output from respiratory nerves which is the neural correlate of breathing). A reduction in artificial cerebral spinal fluid (aCSF) pH increased fictive breathing frequency (fR) and total fictive ventilation (TFV). Cold temperature reduced and hot temperature increased fR and TFV under control conditions. CH attenuated fictive breathing independently of temperature. Additional experiments in which the aCSF temperature was varied indicate that the effects of temperature acclimation result from neural plastic changes within respiratory control centres in the brain.

Resumen
This chapter addresses deficiencies in pre-anaesthesia communication. Here, the use of medical narrative illustrates communication-enhancing techniques and attitudes that may help anaesthetists anticipate and respond to the biopsychosocial content, extant in the pre-anaesthesia assessment setting. By any measure, the pre-anaesthesia evaluation sets anaesthesia care in motion. Until now, little has been written about the development of a learnable framework for effective communication, in this or any other anaesthesia care setting. With respect to pre-anaesthesia communication, the need for heuristics or ‘rules of thumb’ is ever acute to improve rapport, elicit and respond to questions, manage ambiguity, as well as to obtain valid consent. Furthermore, anaesthetists have to communicate effectively with patients about conflicting advice, prior negative anaesthetic experiences and fears about awareness and intraoperative death. A 56-year-old man scheduled for an elective left inguinal herniorrhaphy meets his anaesthetist minutes before surgery is to begin. Three days before, the patient presented to hospital with his hernia incarcerated. It was easily reduced. A follow-up office visit with his surgeon preceded the surgery. The patient’s sole co-morbidity is benign prostatic hypertrophy. On the morning of surgery this otherwise healthy-appearing man, accompanied by his wife, meets the anaesthetist for the first time. After record review the patient is told three anaesthetic options exist—local anaesthesia with intravenous sedation, general anaesthesia and spinal anaesthesia — and that ‘spinal is the way to go’. Unquestioningly, the patient agrees to spinal anaesthesia. The spinal block is easy to place. The surgery is uneventful. Post-operatively, the patient cannot urinate. His discharge from the day-surgery unit is delayed by hours. He is told it is because of ‘the spinal’. Bladder catheterization ensues. The rest of his recuperation is uneventful, except for lingering feelings of betrayal, distrust and disappointment. He wonders why he was not told spinal anaesthesia might cause urinary retention. He becomes angry. He resolves never to use that anaesthetist’s or hospital’s services again. His wife even urges him to sue them both for pain and suffering. What could have been done to effect a more positive outcome for the patient, the anaesthetist and the hospital? The answer lies, at least in part, in improved communication.

Resumen
This chapter assesses Tod Machover’s Open Up the House (2012). Machover has long been recognized internationally as an outstanding and influential all-round musician and polymath, whose areas of expertise comfortably straddle the twin worlds of arts and science. Most readily associated with groundbreaking innovation in musical technology—often applied to ambitious operatic, educational, and symphonic ventures—he is nonetheless able to tailor his talents to embrace more modest, small-scale forces, as shown here. This exhilarating little piece fizzes with vitality from the outset. The piano’s continual, pulsing, eighth-note chords drive the music along, ensuring that momentum never flags. The incisive soprano writing calls upon the singer’s brightest, most radiant resonances. The piece builds cumulatively, with leaping, plunging intervals, spiked accents, and insistent repetitions. The singer must conserve stamina for the long notes at the ends of phrases, and plan breath spans accordingly.

Resumen
This chapter retells what it was like to live under repression in communist East Germany. This account would be very funny if it weren’t also bitterly sad. The chapter talks about how during his teaching career the author received a visit by the police. He was also spied on by informants working for the secret police, and was told what could and couldn’t be read. He was also bullied by school inspectors, and “betrayed” by pupils. The chapter describes the intimate relationship between the Communist Party and the media. The repression that the people of East Germany suffered was remorseless, yet it was also stupid and inflexible, so that when the crisis of the regime finally came, its leaders initiated their own downfall.

This part details the author's childhood, when he attended a Protestant, German-language, primary school. In spite of her origin, his mother did not want to know anything about religion and had little interest in things Jewish. His father, on the other hand, remained closely linked to Judaism. In 1929, when the author was nine years old and about to move from the Polish city of Wloclawek, one of his favorite teachers told him that he was going to travel into the land of culture. He did soak up German culture in Berlin and did develop a great love affair with German literature. But as an 'alien Jew', the Nazis compelled him and his family to return to Poland.

Resumen
Introduction: Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is a rare syndrome, still underdiagnosed. It manifests with orthostatic headache and improves with decubitus, and may present nausea, vomiting, diplopia, vestibular and auditory symptoms. The main cause of SIH is spontaneous CSF leaks usually in the cervicothoracic transition. Case report: RSA, male, 36 years, he presented holocranial headache triggered in the orthostatic position and decubitus improvement associated with nausea. He denied visual complaints, fever, trauma or invasive procedures. Neurological examination: discrete neck stiffness, fundoscopy and others exams without abnormalities. Brain and cervical spine MRI, also venous AngioMRI were normal. Dorsal spine MRI with extradural collection. Arterial AngioMRI with 2,50x2,0mm aneurysmatic dilation in the right supraclinoid internal carotid artery. Opening pressure of CSF 6cmH2 O. Analgesia, decubitus rest and parsimonious hydration were performed. In cisternoscintigraphy, CSF leakage into the extradural space at the level of D3/D4 and D4/D5 on the left, delay in the rise of the tracer for brain convexities in 24 hours images, suggestive of CSF hypotension. Blood patch guided by radioscopy was performed, with improvement after 2 weeks of the 3rd procedure. Conclusion: Knowing the types of headache and its etiologies is essential to orientate diagnosis and treatment, avoiding unnecessary exams. In this case report, the microaneurysm found did not justify the complaint of orthostatic headache. The rapid diagnosis of spontaneous CSF leaks provided early treatment avoiding complications such as subdural hematomas, cerebral venous thrombosis, pituitary dysfunction.

Resumen
Cracking and bulging in welded and internally lined pressure vessels that work in thermal-mechanical cycling service have been well known problems in the petrochemical, power and nuclear industries. In spite of this problem has been studied during the last fifty years, published literature and industry surveys show that similar problems still occur nowadays. Typical examples of this problem are the coke drums in the delayed coking units refinery process. Delayed coking units are among the refinery units that have higher economical yields. To shut down these units represents a high negative economical impact in refinery operations. Also, the maintenance costs associated with repairs are commonly very high. Cracking and bulging occurrences in the coke drums, most often at the weld areas, characterize the history of the operation of delayed coking units. To anticipate through wall cracking in these coke drums, AUT (automatic ultrasonic testing); Dual TOFD (time of flight diffraction) and the Phased Array technique simultaneous inspection system was selected among other inspection techniques as a condition monitoring tool during an unit turnaround. The inspection methodology in combination with fracture mechanics was used to classify discontinuities as acceptable and non-acceptable. This indicated approach helped to optimize the workscope during the turnaround and establish guidelines for inspection and repair of the delayed coker unit. This work presents the different steps followed during the inspection and fitness for service evaluation. Also, this study shows advantages and disadvantages of the AUT-Phased Array technique.
