Background Physical therapists' recommendations to patients to avoid daily physical activity can be influenced by the therapists' kinesiophobic beliefs. Little is known about the amount of influence of a physical therapist's kinesiophobic beliefs on a patient's actual lifting capacity during a lifting test. Objective The objective of this study was to determine the influence of physical therapists' kinesiophobic beliefs on lifting capacity in healthy people. Design A blinded, cluster-randomized cross-sectional study was performed. Methods The participants (n=256; 105 male, 151 female) were phy

The present study surveyed a sample of 116 Australian therapists who identified themselves as working primarily with traumatized clients. Outcome variables were measures of vicarious traumatization (VT), burnout and trauma symptomatology (intrusion and avoidance). A measure of beliefs about the therapeutic process was constructed for the present study and examined along with other predictor variables, namely years of experience as a therapist, percentage of time spent in clinical work with clients, predominant client group, and recent and direct exposure to trauma in the therapist. AbstractThere were two aims of the research with 190 Australian clinical psychologists: (1) to investigate the construct validity of the Therapist Belief Scale (TBS), and (2) to examine the relative contribution of demographics, workplace variables, and individual factors to burnout. Construct validity was examined using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses and associations between the variables. Multivariate regressions were used to examine the relative contributions to burnout. The TBS showed three factors related to distress, inflexibility, and control, all of which were significant

The majority of studies regarding telemental health have been conducted in Western countries. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) theorists propose that disturbances in cognition underlie and maintain much emotional disturbance. Accordingly the cognitive addition to behavioral therapy typically consists in collaboratively noticing, restructuring, de-fusing from, and challenging these cognitions by the therapist and the patient. With the right group of problems, patients, and therapists, the practice of CBT is well known to possess therapeutic efficacy. This chapter, however, primarily considers the theory rather than the therapy of CBT; in particular it looks at the central significance i

The session in this chapter looks at the concept of core beliefs and how negative automatic thoughts are related to negative core beliefs. Negative core beliefs are the roots from which different types of related automatic thoughts grow. Core beliefs arise from repeated similar experiences and powerful single experiences. Clients learn to identify their personal core beliefs (such as I am worthless, I am unlovable, I will go crazy) by using the downward arrow technique. Although arriving at a core belief and saying it out loud is an emotionally evocative experience, it’s a necessary part of the client’s work. It is also an opportunity for the therapist to hear the client and empathize with the client’s experience. Over time, the client builds a repertoire of experiences that allow for new core beliefs to form, making their original core beliefs less valid.

This issue is especially timely given the recent epidemic of mass shootings and heightened concerns about gun violence. The chapter presents the results of an original empirical study examining play therapists' views about gun violence and gun control; play therapist beliefs about aggressive play and toy guns; and play therapist practices with regard to toy selection and limit-setting. Arteriovenous (AV) fistula failure is a major clinical problem for the 350,000 patients currently on hemodialysis in the United States. The reasons for this failure are mainly attributed to venous stenosis due to neointimal hyperplasia together with a possible failure of vascular dilatation [1]. Despite the magnitude of the clinical problem, there are currently no effective therapies for AV fistula failure. We believe that this is due to a lack of knowledge about the mechanisms involved in both neointimal hyperplasia and vascular dilatation in the specific context of AV fistulae.
