Resumen
Several Canadian wood truss manufacturers expressed a need to develop technical information to initiate the fabrication and acceptance of wood trusses made with glued-laminated timber (glulam) members and connected by punched metal plates. In collaboration with industrial participants, Forintek Canada Corp. developed a program for testing and analysis of metal plated glulam trusses. Twelve 3/12 pitched chord trusses and three parallel chord trusses, all 13.7 m long, were designed by three different plate manufacturers. All truss fabrication took place at a single truss manufacturing plant. Tru

It has been recently advocated that a practical static design of hollow structural section (HSS) Warren and Pratt trusses, having either gapped or overlapped connections, can be performed on the basis of a force distribution obtained from an elastic analysis of the truss with either all the members pin-jointed or the web members pin-jointed to continuous chord members. However, at the service load level, gap-connected truss deflections have been previously underestimated by around 12%–15%. Laboratory testing of HSS trusses has accordingly been undertaken to establish experimental axial force a

Steel trusses are the most popular system for supporting long-span roofs in commercial buildings, such as warehouses and aircraft hangars. There are several advantages of steel trusses, such as lightweight, ease of handling and erection, and geometric flexibility. However, they have some drawbacks, such as high material and maintenance cost, and low fire resistance. In this paper, a precast concrete truss is proposed as an alternative to steel trusses for spans up to 48 m (160 ft) without intermediate supports. The proposed design is easy to produce and has lower construction and maintenance c

Resumen
AbstractDynamic processes have always been of profound interest for scientists and engineers alike. Often, the mathematical models used to describe and predict time-variant phenomena are uncertain in the sense that governing relations between model parameters, state variables and the time domain are incomplete. In this paper we adopt a recently proposed algorithm for the detection of model uncertainty and apply it to dynamic models. This algorithm combines parameter estimation, optimum experimental design and classical hypothesis testing within a probabilistic frequentist framework. The best setup of an experiment is defined by optimal sensor positions and optimal input configurations which both are the solution of a PDE-constrained optimization problem. The data collected by this optimized experiment then leads to variance-minimal parameter estimates. We develop efficient adjoint-based methods to solve this optimization problem with SQP-type solvers. The crucial test which a model has to pass is conducted over the claimed true values of the model parameters which are estimated from pairwise distinct data sets. For this hypothesis test, we divide the data into k equally-sized parts and follow a k-fold cross-validation procedure. We demonstrate the usefulness of our approach in simulated experiments with a vibrating linear-elastic truss.

Resumen
AbstractNutrient recommendation frameworks are underpinned by scientific understanding of how nutrients cycle within timespans relevant to management decision-making. A trusted potassium (K) recommendation is comprehensive enough in its components to represent important differences in biophysical and socioeconomic contexts but simple and transparent enough for logical, practical use. Here we examine a novel six soil-pool representation of the K cycle and explore the extent to which existing recommendation frameworks represent key plant, soil, input, and loss pools and the flux processes among these pools. Past limitations identified include inconsistent use of terminology, misperceptions of the universal importance and broad application of a single soil testing diagnostic, and insufficient correlation/calibration research to robustly characterize the probability and magnitude of crop response to fertilizer additions across agroecozones. Important opportunities to advance K fertility science range from developing a better understanding of the mode of action of diagnostics through use in multivariate field trials to the use of mechanistic models and systematic reviews to rigorously synthesize disparate field studies and identify knowledge gaps and/or novel targets for diagnostic development. Finally, advancing evidence-based K management requires better use of legacy and newly collected data and harnessing emerging data science tools and e-infrastructure to expand global collaborations and accelerate innovation.

Resumen
The chapter reports on the in-situ experimental campaign and the numerical modelling that were performed to assess the static and dynamic behaviour of the Cupola of the Siena Cathedral in Italy: an irregular polygonal masonry structure built in the 13th century and composed of two domes. The research was motivated by the failure of some of the stone-trusses which connect the two masonry domes and consists of: a) single and double flat-jack tests in the internal dome, b) dynamic vibration tests on the Cupola under environmental (wind) and artificial (vibrodyne) loads and c) dynamic vibration tests on the double colonnade located below the Cupola (hammer impact tests). Results of tests were employed to identify a numerical model of the Cupola, which allowed to simulate its structural behaviour and to account for the failure of the stone-trusses between the two domes. The numerical model was later extended to the whole Cathedral. Through the discussion of an emblematic case study, the chapter shows a careful application of non-destructive testing (NDT) and numerical modelling in the field of assessment (and rehabilitation) of heritage buildings.

Corporate decisions concerning the purchase of security software and hardware appliances are often made based simply on the recommendations of the technical staff, the budget process (return on investment arguments), and/or a sales presentation and assertions. This chapter addresses the notion of trusted products and assurance in those products (i.e., confidence in the correct operation of a product) and how assurance is gained through independent review and testing. Early attempts to measure assurance in trusted products are described (some products today still refer to these procedures). Modern approaches to measuring assurance will be discussed in the context of ISO Standard 15408 (the Common Criteria (CC)). Current U.S. federal government policy concerning the use of evaluated products is presented, as well as a discussion of why industrial organizations may wish to consider such products.

Resumen
This paper presents the findings of the pilot studies and recommendations for designing of two-hinged wooden arches. The prototype models of wooden arches with the span of 6mand the rise of 1m were designed. The models had a rectangular cross-section of 180x40mm and a T-section of 180x40mm with a plywood plate with the thickness of 6 mm and the width of 500mm. The main objective of the T-section was to ensure the stability of the arch. Each arch was composed of six segments –boards joined by clamping plates. The bowstring truss including two inclined tie bars enables carrying asymmetric loads

Resumen
Trichloroethylene (TCE) releases from leaks and spills next to a large government building occurred over several decades with the most recent event occurring 20 years ago. In response to a perceived conventional vapor intrusion (VI) issue a sub-slab depressurization system (SSDS) was installed 6 years ago. The SSDS is operating within design limits and has achieved building TCE vapor concentration reductions. However, subsequent periodic TCE vapor spikes based on daily HAPSITE™ measurements indicate additional source(s). Two rounds of smoke tests conducted in 2017 and 2018 involved introductio
