Companies across all industries are engaging in digital transformation to harness the power of advanced information technologies. Building on interviews and diverse case studies, this book describes how data and algorithms are reshaping management practices, organizational structures, corporate culture, and work roles. The book develops a broad framework for understanding digitalization not as a technological change, but as a new normative mindset, ‘the data imperative’. Résumé :
This chapter considers ways in which morphomic patterns can themselves change, yet without ceasing to be morphomic. Overall, the trend does not appear to be towards paradigmatic distributions that make sense. Rather morphomic patterns may change, giving rise to new morphomic patterns because of overlap with other morphomic patterns, accidental effects of sound change (particularly ones that produce syncretisms), or independent morphological changes. The data suggest that the predictability of distribution is superordinate to making sense in extramorphological terms.

From the global geopolitical arena to the smart city, control over knowledge—particularly over data and intellectual property—has become a key battleground for the exercise of economic and political power. For companies and governments alike, control over knowledge—what scholar Susan Strange calls the knowledge structure—has become a goal unto itself. The rising dominance of the knowledge structure is leading to a massive redistribution of power, including from individuals to companies and states.
