AbstractWe care not just how things are but how they could have been otherwise – about possibility and necessity as well as actuality. Many philosophers regard such talk as beyond the reach of respectable science, since observation tells us how things are but (allegedly) not how they could have been otherwise. I argue that, on the contrary, such criticisms are ill-founded: possibility and necessity are studied in natural science, for example through phase spaces, abstract mathematical representations of the possible states of a physical system. The possibility is objective, not merely epistemi

This thesis argues for a unique relationship between African American literature and liminal space, predicated on the historical facts of North American slavery. While recent critics of African American literature have argued for the importance of historical and civic space in shaping racialised discourse, the· role of liminal space has not been well examined. This thesis examines texts by three African American writers - Harriet Jacobs, Ralph Ellison and John Edgar Wideman - and one Canadian Caribbean author, Nalo Hopkinson, to argue that their literary representations of liminality perfor

The study is temporally situated amid new education policies that bring with them expectations of transformed teaching, expressed through notions of ‘quality’ and ‘21st century learning’ (ACARA, 2012b; AITSL, 2012c). Architecture cannot be dissociated from political power. However, whenever it becomes a technique of executing politics, it becomes a very dangerous tool, especially if the politics aims to fragment and control. In this conceptual thesis I explore a paradox inherent in sustainability, namely that to 'sustain' something it needs to be allowed to emerge into something different than it currently is. Moreover, it is not always knowable in advance what that ‘something’ will be. I also argue that education is fundamentally about sustainability, as its role is to allow/encourage a human being to emerge into someone different than he/she currently is. I assert, however, that whilst this is education’s role, it currently, and paradoxically, works against itself by defining the human subject in advance (as a p

Our hearing system plays a significant role in understanding the space around us. Such a process is the result of the dynamic interaction between the listener and the environment. Yet, predicting how our hearing system drives space perception is still an open problem. In this work, we explore the possibility of employing Bayesian models as a quantitative method to predict human behavior in acoustic environments. We describe how perceptually relevant features can be used to estimate spatial quantities from the acoustic space (e.g., directional sound location). We further describe how the spatia

Résumé :
The research is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of mediatization of art on the example of virtual museums. Main objective of the study is to give communication characteristics of the mediatized socio-cultural institutions. The subject of the research is forms, directions and communication features of virtual museums. Methodology. In the process of study, the method of communication analysis, which allowed to identify and characterize the main factors of the museum’s functioning as a communication system, was used. Among them, special emphasis is put on receptive and metalinguistic funct

Résumé :
The New Space Age (NewSpace) marks the advent of a new era in the use of space, characterized by the opening of space to new players, the use of new space technologies, new functionalities for satellites in orbit, and the development of satellite constellations, mainly in the fields of communications and Earth observation. These developments are underpinned by first-rate scientific and technological advances, as well as considerable public and private investment, in particular in the USA, China and, to a lesser extent, Europe. Résumé :
The article considers the possibility of analyzing the dynamics of changes in the characteristics of time series obtained on the basis of recurrence plots. The possibility of using the studied indicators to determine the presence of critical phenomena in economic systems is considered. Based on the analysis of economic time series of different nature, the suitability of the studied characteristics for the identification of critical phenomena is assessed. The description of recurrence diagrams and characteristics of time series that can be obtained on their basis is given. An analysis of seven

The Seba Technology Disruption Framework is an open-access tool for technology forecasting that has evolved through use by policymakers, managers, investors, researchers, and other practitioners over the last decade. This framework extends the work of Clayton Christensen, Larry Downes, Paul Nunes, and others, by expanding the classification scheme for different types of technology disruption, categorizing them on the basis of initial conditions (From Below, From Above, or “Big Bang”) and scale of impact (Product, Composition, Architectural, or Phase Change). Résumé :
The article considers the issues of assessing the level of financial security of the bank. An analysis of existing approaches to solving this problem. A scientific and methodological approach based on the application of comprehensive assessment technology is proposed. The computational algorithm is presented in the form of a four-stage procedure, which contains the identification of the initial data set, their normalization, calculation of the partial composite indexes, and a comprehensive index of financial security. Results have interpretation. Determining the levels of financial security an
