The purpose of this study is to examine the differences and similarities regarding verbal politeness in greetings and requests in Swedish and the Chilean variety of Spanish. The article discusses the historical background for the development of the AGROVOC multilingual thesaurus on agriculture. The history of the creation and the specifics of work on the AGROVOC thesaurus in the 1980s and 1990s are outlined.
