Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2) is a gene that can play a role in the development of breast cancer. Herceptin (chemical name: trastuzumab), which works against HER2-positive breast cancers by blocking the ability of the cancer cells to receive chemical signals that tell the cells to grow. Leek, scientifically as Allium porrum, are related to garlic, onions, shallots, and scallions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of leek extracts (Allium porrum) on Trastuzumab (TRA) induced cardiotoxicity after breast cancer chemotherapy treatment. The mice in the pretreated group were given a daily dose of 1.25 ml Allium porrum for 14 days. To induce cardiac injury, TRA (2 mg/kg) in a single injection intraperitoneally and the mice were sacrificed after 72 h. This is first time investigate the cardioprotective effects of Allium porrum on TRA-induced cardiotoxicity. The TRA-treated with Allium porrum groups showed a significant improved left ventricular function EF%, CO; p < 0.05, decrease in the Creatine kinase, creatine kinase MB, lactate dehydrogenase activities and cardiac troponin I, MCP-1 and reduces an inflammatory response in comparison with the TRA-treated group. In conclusion, the present study showed first time that Leek -Allium porrum- may be have potential role in cardio-protector against toxic effects of Trastuzumab.

Allium porrum L. (cultivated leek) (2n = 4x = 32) is a fertile tetraploid that forms bivalents with pericentric chiasmata at metaphase I. To investigate the basis of this unusual behavior for a tetraploid, we describe the karyotype, axial cores, synaptonemal complexes (SCs), and meiotic nodules of A. porrum. The karyotype appears to be autotetraploid. This conclusion is also supported by presynaptic alignment of axial cores in groups of four and partner trades between pairs of SCs. Numerous early nodules are distributed all along axial cores and SCs during zygonema, but they are lost by late zygonema – early pachynema. Late (recombination) nodules (RNs) are present on SCs near kinetochores throughout the remainder of pachynema. This pattern of RNs corresponds to the pattern of pericentric chiasmata. Pachytene quadrivalents usually are resolved into bivalents because partner trades between SC lateral elements rarely occur between RNs on the same segment of SC. Thus, the patterns of crossing-over and partner trades promote balanced disjunction and high fertility in autotetraploid A. porrum. Rare quadrivalents observed at metaphase I must be due to infrequent partner trades between RNs. Polycomplexes, unusual in their number and size, were observed during zygonema. Allium porrum is a major vegetable crop worldwide. Most of its production and consumption is in western Europe, with France and Belgium being the world's greatest producers. Dry leek is the most consumed vegetable after potato. Allium porrum is an herbaceous plant from the Liliaceae family and has been widely used in Persian foods as a flavour component. The Allium ampeloprasum is categorized into wild leek, cultivated leek, kurrat, pearl onion, tare and great-headed garlic based on their diverse cytogenetic and morphological characters. Leeks are known for their characteristic flavour and medicinal value. Leeks have excellent nutritional properties and are a rich source of bioactive compounds and phytochemicals, Leaves contains lot of fibre, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2 and vitamin C. Consumption of leeks causes a reduction of the risk of hypercholesterolemia, blood pressure, arteriosclerosis and platelet aggregation which helps in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Besides these, the leeks have antimicrobial activity against various bacteria and fungi and viruses. <strong>Aims: </strong>The present study investigated the antitrypanosomal activity of crude ethyl acetate bulb extracts of <em>A. porrum</em> plant against <em>T. b. brucei</em>. <strong>Methodology: </strong>Twenty five male albino rats were divided into five groups and infected with x10<sup>6</sup>/ml of <em>T. b. brucei</em>. Group 1 was infected and untreated while groups 2-4 were infected and treated with single intraperitoneal injection 50, 75 and 100 mg/kg of ethyl acetate extract of <em>A. porrum</em> while a single dose 3.5 mg/kg diaminazene aceturate was administered to group 5 when parasitaemia was established at x10<sup>6 </sup>day 5 post infection. <strong>Results: </strong>Clinical manifestations of trypanosomoses such as increased rectal temperature, weakness and dullness were observed in experimental rats in all the groups. There was decrease packed cell volume (PCV) and red blood cell count (RBC) in group 1-4 which was not significant (p&gt;0.05) while group 5 had a significant increase (p&lt;0.05) in PCV and non-significant increase (p&gt;0.05) in RBC post treatment. There were feeble changes in the pre-treatment and post-treatment parasitemia level in the groups treated with ethyl acetate extract of <em>A. porrum </em>while there was significant clearance in parasitemia in the control group. <strong>Conclusion: </strong>Interperitoneal injection of ethyl acetate extracts of <em>A. porrum </em>at the dose and concentration used in this study, has trypanosomal reduction activity in wister rats.

Phospholipase D (PLD) is a key enzyme in signal transduction – mediating plant responses to various environmental stresses including drought and salinity. Isotype PLDδ interacts with the microtubule cytoskeleton, although it is unclear if, or how, each of the 12 PLD isotypes in Arabidopsis may be involved mechanistically. We employed RNA interference in epidermal cells of Allium porrum L. (leek) leaves, in which the developmental reorientation of cortical microtubule arrays to a longitudinal direction is highly sensitive to experimental manipulation. Using particle bombardment and transient transformation with synthetic siRNAs targeting AtPLDα, β, γ, δ, ॉ and ζ, we examined the effect of ‘cross-target’ silencing orthologous A. porrum genes on microtubule reorientation dynamics during cell elongation. Co-transformation of individual siRNAs together with a GFP-MBD microtubule-reporter gene revealed that siRNAs targeting AtPLDδ promoted, whereas siRNAs targeting AtPLDβ and γ reduced, longitudinal microtubule orientation in A. porrum. These PLD isotypes, therefore, interact, directly or indirectly, with the cytoskeleton and the microtubule-plasma membrane interface. The unique response of PLDδ to silencing, along with its exclusive localisation to the plasma membrane, indicates that this isotype is specifically involved in promoting microtubule-membrane anchorage.

El presente estudio es de tipo Analítico, Experimental, Longitudinal, Prospectivo, de enfoque cuantitativo,la muestra biológica fue la Planta de Poro (Allium ampeloprasum L, variedad porrum) parte blanca y verde. Se elaboró un extracto acuoso al 25%. Al analizar la capacidad para reducir el radical DPPH, muestra que el poro verde ejerce un mejor poder reductor de radicales libres notablemente mayor, conforme se observa el valor CI 50 para el poro verde es de10.6 mg/ml, mientras que para el poro blanco es de 18.6 mg/ ml, lo que indica que con una concentración menor de la muestra, se logra alcanzar un 50% de reducción del DPPH. Se utilizó la prueba de t student para el análisis, se observó que el p-valor es 0.86, siendo mayor a 0.05 no es significativamente diferente. Las concentraciones de extracto acuoso de Poro parte blanca y parte verde, influyen en su capacidad antioxidante, pero, la temperatura ebullición no modifica esta capacidad.<br>Tesis

The article discusses the results of a comprehensive study of the biological and adaptive potential of the leek (Allium porrum L.) gene pool, including the features of morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics of plants (and varieties) under optimal and unfavorable conditions of vegetation and autumn-winter storage and identifying sources of high productivity, adaptability and quality for use in breeding and vegetable growing. 140 varieties of leek were studied, representing the world diversity of this crop (VIR collection). The experiments on the effect of hydrothermal stress on growth activity, as well as physiological characteristics, made it possible to identify high-quality sources during harvesting and storage, as well as varieties with increased keeping quality.

Abstract. In previous studies, composite metal foams (CMF) have shown exemplary mechanical performance under impact which has made them prime candidates for protection of transported passengers and cargo. [1] Materials utilized in such applications often require joining to form structures and geometries that are far more complex or impossible to produce in an as-manufactured state. Welding methods are popular in the joining of metals with solid-state welding processes such as induction welding being of particular interest in the studies to be discussed. In this study, various thicknesses of 316L stainless steel CMF are manufactured through powder metallurgy technique and welded using Induction Welding. The mechanical properties of the weldments were studied through uniaxial tensile tests while microstructural characterization of the weldment within the joint interface and heat-affected zone (HAZ) are evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. The combination of these evaluations grant insight on the effects of various weld parameters (e.g., welding temperature, workpiece thickness, flux, and welding environment) as well as the suitability and restrictions of induction welding in the joining of 316L Stainless Steel CMF.

Abstract. The growing market of power electronics in the mobility sector leads to an increasing demand for cooling systems. In the project this need to improve performance is to be met by adapting the cooling structure. Depending on the intended application of cooling systems - automotive, railway and aerospace - different requirements are defined for the cooling process resulting in varying conditions for the design. So metallic foam structures are under investigation because of their high inner surface. Two different process lines are most suitable for the aimed application. The production and optimization of galvanized foams seems to be the most lucrative for a low-cost product, while 3D printing is currently only worthwhile for special applications such as aerospace. As a potentially more cost-effective process, which is already being used for small series, investment casting structures are being investigated as an alternative. Depending on the production process chosen, corresponding requirements for structure creation suitable for production apply. Corresponding process adaptations are also taken into consideration. The first optimization step is an analysis of the conventional open cellular metal foam structures using CT. The results of the CT evaluation, together with the empirical data for fluid mechanical and thermal characteristics, are the basis for a later replacement model of the CFD simulation. Besides the Kelvin cell, which is a good geometrical substitute for the conventional structures that copy the Polyurethan master pattern, other cell types are also considered. Alternatively, structures based on mathematical cells e.g. Schwarz P/D, offer the possibility of separating two media to create cross-flow or counter-flow heat exchangers. Regardless of the chosen system, the main task of the investigation is to find an optimum of the relation between pressure drop and heat transfer performance for the corresponding system and to design the cell arrangement in a way that is suitable for manufacturing. This justifies, among other things, the investigation of a minimal surface structure, which at first seems contradictory. Considering the manufacturing process to be defined beforehand, requirements such as self-supporting design (additive process) and free accessibility (electroplating) also play an important role in the structure development. Thus, the goal is still to optimize the cell and web geometry accordingly.

Abstract. Several studies in the literature have been devoted to the permeability prediction of metal foams, including that involving the Representative Unit Cell (RUC) model. The RUC modelling approach is an attractive modelling method due to the simple rectangular geometry, as well as its satisfying performance in comparison to other models and experimental data as proven elsewhere in the literature for porous media. The subject of compression of metal foams has been addressed elsewhere in the literature, but this study is the first to involve an all-inclusive analytical model where both streamwise and transverse compression are accounted for. The Darcy and Forchheimer permeability coefficients of the compressed foam (or three-strut) RUC model are presented. Furthermore, a geometric approach requiring measured geometric parameters and a combined geometric-kinetic approach involving measured permeability coefficients are included for determining the specific surface area. Geometric parameters required to determine the permeability and specific surface area predictions using the compressed foam RUC model include the uncompressed porosity, pore dimension and strut diameter, as well as the compression factor. The model is evaluated through comparison with available experimental data and empirical models obtained from the literature for compressed metal foams. The compressed RUC model predictions produce expected tendencies of geometrical parameters of metal foams under compression and the comparison with experimental data reveal satisfactory results.

Abstract. According to the US Department of Transportation (DOT), there are millions of liters of hazardous materials (HAZMATS) transported each year via railroad. This has translated to stringent safety measures taken to alleviate the effects of accidents involving tank cars carrying these HAZMATs. One of such measures is in the creation of the thermal protection system of tank cars in which the tank car must have sufficient thermal resistance when subjected to a simulated pool fire for 100 mins and a torch fire for 30 mins without its back plate temperature exceeding 427 ºC at any point of time. This requires a suitable material as a thermal blanket and insulation in tank car lining. Steel-steel composite metal foam (S-S CMF) is a novel metal foam with unique properties of high strength to density ratio, lightweight, and high energy absorption. It consists of metallic hollow spheres that are closely packed within a metal matrix. The large percentage of air within the hollow spheres provide both lightweight and insulating effects for CMF. S-S CMF is being investigated using the standard torch fire test requirement to determine its suitability as a material for tank car thermal protection. This is accomplished by developing a numerical model using the Fire dynamics simulator (FDS) as a form of validation for experimental work done. To properly evaluate this, there are various thermal properties of S-S CMF that need to be established for predicting CMF’s thermal response. Surface emissivity has been a challenging property to evaluate and hence this study focuses on developing an experimental and numerical procedure in evaluating this property for composite materials such as CMF. Preliminary data shows an acceptable prediction of emissivity, which will be applied to the FDS model for the torch fire test.

Este trabajo explica cómo los costos de comerciar (protección y otros costos) desestimulan las exportaciones manufactureras y por qué Colombia exporta mayoritariamente productos primarios. Para esto, además de una revisión de literatura y una descripción del desempeño exportador colombiano, se presenta una metodología que mide la protección total causada por el arancel y las medidas no arancelarias (MNA) y que permite generar una serie de la protección verdadera para el período 1950-2019. Los resultados muestran que el país no ha explotado su potencial exportador de manufacturas porque los incentivos para hacerlo han sido magros, un resultado de la alta protección a la producción local, de una infraestructura escasa y de unos servicios logísticos costosos.
