AbstractThe advent of Milky Way high-resolution spectroscopic surveys has brought our attention to the importance of precise chemical abundance measurements to disentangle the stellar population puzzle of the Galaxy. Moreover, automated stellar parameters are the bedrock of Galactic spectroscopic surveys science. They allow a rapid and homogeneous processing of extensive data sets, necessary for an efficient scientific return. In this review, I discuss the different parametrization techniques, focusing on the automated determination of individual element abundances. Each of them has its optima

Abstract Determining the He/H ratio in cool stars presents a fundamental astrophysical challenge. While this ratio is established for hot O and B stars, its extrapolation to cool stars remains uncertain due to the absence of helium lines in their observed spectra. We address this knowledge gap by focusing on the Sun as a representative cool star. We conduct spectroscopic analyses of the observed solar photospheric lines by utilizing a combination of MgH molecular lines and neutral Mg atomic lines including yet another combination of CH and C2 molecular lines with neutral C atomic lines. The differential abundance analysis method can improve the precision of stellar chemical abundances. The method compares the equivalent widths of a certain line in a star with the same line in a star considered to be a standard representative of its class, using high resolution and high signal to noise ratio spectra. The method has achieved great results by reducing the measurement errors to unprecedentedly low levels. However, to date, there has not been a consistent analysis on the actual improvements of this method when compared to a classical analysis in metal-poor stars. Here we present a

Abstract. Nitrous oxide (N2O), an increasingly abundant greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, is the most important stratospheric ozone-depleting gas of this century. Natural abundance ratios of isotopocules of N2O, NNO molecules substituted with stable isotopes of nitrogen and oxygen, are a promising index of various sources or production pathways of N2O and of its sink or decomposition pathways. Several automated methods have been reported to improve the analytical precision for the isotopocule ratio of atmospheric N2O and to reduce the labor necessary for complicated sample preparation procedur

ABSTRACT We present atmospheric parameters and abundances for chemical elements from carbon to barium in metal-poor stars in Segue 1 (seven stars), Coma Berenices (three stars), and Triangulum ii (one star) ultrafaint dwarf galaxies (UFDs). The effective temperatures rely on new photometric observations in the visible and infra-red bands, obtained with the 2.5 m telescope of the SAI MSU Caucasian observatory. Abundances of up to fourteen chemical elements were derived under the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation, and LTE abundances were obtained for up to five more eleme

Context. Globular clusters are known to host multiple stellar populations, which are a signature of their formation process. The globular cluster E3 is one of the few low-mass globulars that is thought not to host multiple populations. Aims. We investigate red giant branch stars in E3 with the aim of providing a first detailed chemical inventory for this cluster, we determine its radial velocity, and we provide additional insights into the possible presence of multiple populations in this cluster. Methods. We obtained high-resolution FLAMES-UVES/VLT spectra of four red giant branch stars likel

The PG 1159 stars represent the hottest stage of post-AGB evolution. Quantitative spectral analyses of most known PG 1159 stars have been carried out by us from optical, UV and EUV observations (see Dreizler et al 1995 for a review). It has been shown that these stars have atmospheres dominated by C and He with a significant admixture of O. These abundances reveal the inter–shell matter of a former AGB star. The four stars, HS 2324+3944, NGC 7094, Abell 43, and Sh 2-68, define a small group of peculiar PG 1159 stars (termed hybrid PG 1159). Unlike all other PG 1159 stars hydrogen is detected i

The age of a high-redshift QSO can constrain the cosmology by placing a limit on the cosmological time. We use the observed FeII (UV+optical)/MgIIλ2798 flux ratio from the broad-line gas of a QSO at z=3.62 to estimate the abundance ratio [Mg/Fe] and predict that the QSO is at least 1.3 Gyr old from the chemical analysis using the abundance ratio [Mg/Fe] as a cosmic clock. Our result favors a nonzero cosmological constant and thus conflicts with a flat, matter-dominated universe.
