Ten species of sea anemones (Anthozoa: Actiniaria) are documented in the Mexican Caribbean based on observations andcollections in 11 coral reef localities during 2006–2011; three of them are new records for Mexico. These species belongto families Actiniidae, Aiptasiidae, Aliciidae, Boloceroididae, Phymanthidae, and Stichodactylidae. Although these do notrepresent all species reported in the Mexican Caribbean, these are the most abundant and conspicuous. The Anthozoa class is composed solely by marine benthic consumers, some with adaptations that enable them to inhabit even the most extreme habitats, like hydrothermal vents, the polar seas, and even whale falls. Anthozoans, such as corals and anemones, are important modulators of marine habitats in the coral reef communities, being also ecologically relevant due to their abundance and the trophic level they occupy. One of these is Actinia equina, the most conspicuous species in tidal pool communities in European shores, with a broad range of distribution from the North Sea to the Mediterranean

We describe a new species of carcinoecium-forming sea anemone, Stylobates birtlesi sp. n., from sites 680-960 m deep in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia. An anemone of this genus settles on a gastropod shell inhabited by a hermit crab, then covers and extends the shell to produce a chitinous structure termed a carcinoecium. Stylobates birtlesi sp. n. is symbiotic with the hermit crab Sympagurus trispinosus (Balss, 1911). The nature of marginal sphincter muscle and nematocyst size and distribution distinguish Stylobates birtlesi
