Streszczenie:
In this paper, we adopt Piaget’s theory of social exchanges, in which an interaction is an exchange of services between agents, such that agents assign subjective, qualitative values —called exchange values— to the actions and objects they exchange during interactions. The agents present characteristics related to social power during the interactions. In this paper, we show how these characteristics are considered in the agents’ reasoning. This paper also shows how these characteristics and the exchange values can influence the agents’ choice of future partners, in support of groupformation.

Online social networks (OSNs) have seen a remarkable rise in the presence of automated social agents, or social bots. Social bots are the new computing viral, that are surreptitious and clever. What facilitates the creation of social agents is the massive human user-base and business-supportive operating model of social networks. These automated agents are injected by agencies, brands, individuals, and corporations to serve their work and purpose; utilising them for news and emergency communication, marketing, social activism, political campaigning, and even spam and spreading malicious content. Their influence was recently substantiated by coordinated social hacking and computational political propaganda. The thesis of my dissertation argues that automated agents exercise a profound impact on OSNs that transforms into an array of influence on our society and systems. However, latent or veiled, these agents can be successfully detected through measurement, feature extraction and finely tuned supervised learning models. The various types of automated agents can be further unravelled through unsupervised machine learning and natural language processing, to formally inform the populace of their existence and impact.

Mathematical models of opinion formation have been studied by physicists mainly since the 80s and are now part of the new branch known as Sociophysics. This recent area of research borrows tools and concepts from statistical physics. Models of this kind are providing good results to describe certain aspects of the social and political behavior, such as the formation of opinions, adoption of new technologies or extreme attitudes, that present a phenomenology, e.g., order-disorder transitions, analogous to some physical systems. Within this scenario, fits this thesis. We study a model of opinions that can be associated to any public debate with three options (yes, no, undecided). We consider a fully connected population of individuals (or agents), which can be in three different states. Interactions occur by pairs and are competitive, being negative with probability p or positive with probability 1-p. This bimodal distribution of interactions produces a behavior similar to that resulting from the introduction of contrarians (in the sense of Galam) in the population. Furthermore, we consider that a certain fraction d of individuals are intransigent or stubborn, usally called inflexibles in opinion dynamics. These individuals keep their opinions unchanged. By means of computer simulations, we study the impact of competition between contrarians and inflexibles on the formation of the majority opinion. Our results show that the presence of inflexibles affects the critical behavior of the population only if such condition is quenched, that is, if the intransigents not change their beliefs with time. On the other hand, in the annealed version of the model, where the inflexibles are chosen at each time interval (that is, stubborness is occasional), the nonequilibrium phase transition which occurs in the absence of inflexibles is not affected. We also discuss the relevance of the model to real social systems.

ABSTRACT Influence of chelating agents on proteolysis of micellar casein slurries Azucena Becerril Díez The focus of this research was to analyze the effect of Ca chelators on the proteolytic activity of rennet during ripening of a micellar casein slurry. This research was divided in two phases. During the first phase, preliminary studies were performed to understand the behavior of rennet and the milk system in the presence of chelating agents. A solution of reconstituted skim milk at 10% (w/v) was prepared. Individual samples of this solution were divided in two study groups, samples with chelators and rennet and samples with only chelators. Two different chelators were used, sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP or NaHMP) at concentration levels of 2.5 and 10 mM; and sodium citrate (SC) at concentration levels of 5 and 25 mM. These samples were incubated in a water bath at 32°C to measure coagulation time (CT) and Urea-PAGE electrophoresis was performed to identify presence of caseins and smaller peptides. For the second experiment, micellar casein slurries were prepared with a 25% protein content to simulate protein content in cheese. Samples were classified in two study groups, samples with chelators and rennet and samples with only chelators. Percentage of water soluble nitrogen analysis (%WSN) was performed following Kjeldahl procedures to measure the break down of caseins into free soluble nitrogen and Urea-PAGE electrophoresis was used to measure the appearance of smaller peptides due to protein break down. Bands with a higher density on electrophoretic gels were an indication of a higher concentration of peptides due to possible increased exposure of caseins to proteolysis. For the second phase, samples with the 2 most significant chelator levels were selected to add a protease and measure with the same tests if there was a higher rate of proteolysis. The data showed no particular trend or significant difference between treatments (p>0.05) for the %WSN test while some treatments showed a significant effect in samples treated for Urea-PAGE gels. In the Urea-PAGE analysis a different ANOVA was conducted on the percentage of alpha, beta, and gamma caseins for treatments before and after the incubation period separately and for the difference between both periods. These ANOVAs showed that the percentage difference in each casein before and after incubation was affected by the choice and level of chelator, and that these effects were modified by the presence or absence of rennet (p<0.001).

Streszczenie:
The current study investigated the impact of a training program on a peer-to-peer intervention designed to increase the use of bicycle helmets on a large college campus. The training program was evaluated by the number of interactions a peer change agent--an individual who attempts to make a positive change in another person's behavior, had with bicyclists. The results suggest the training program may be effective in increasing change agent interactions for change agents who are already commitment to the intervention leading to more interactions per capita between committed trained change agents and bicyclists than untrained change agent and bicyclists. However, these results must be interpreted with caution due to small and unequal sample sizes.

Streszczenie:
This paper suggests a new paradigm for the design of collaborative autonomous agents engaged in executing a joint task alongside a human user. In particular, we focus on the way an agent's failures should affect its decision making, as far as user satisfaction measures are concerned. Unlike the common practice that considers agent (and more broadly, system) failures solely in the prism of their influence over the agent's contribution to the execution of the joint task, we argue that there is an additional, direct, influence which cannot be fully captured by the above measure. Through two series of large-scale controlled experiments with 450 human subjects, recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk, we show that, indeed, such direct influence holds. Furthermore, we show that the use of a simple agent design that takes into account the direct influence of failures in its decision making yields considerably better user satisfaction, compared to an agent that focuses exclusively on maximizing its absolute contribution to the joint task.

Streszczenie:
Recent increases in political polarization in social media raise questions about the relationship between negative online messages and the decline in political trust around the world. To evaluate this claim causally, we implement a variant of the well-known trust game in a survey experiment with 4,800 respondents in Brazil and Mexico. Our design allows to test the effect of social media on trust and trustworthiness. Survey respondents alternate as agents (politicians) and principals (voters). Players can cast votes, trust others with their votes, and cast entrusted votes. The players rewards are contingent on their preferred “candidate” winning the election. We measure the extent to which voters place their trust in others and are themselves trustworthy, that is, willing to honor requests that may not benefit them. Treated respondents are exposed to messages from in-group or out-group politicians, and with positive or negative tone. Results provide robust support for a negative effect of uncivil partisan discourse on trust behavior and null results on trustworthiness. The negative effect on trust is considerably greater among randomly treated respondents who engage with social media messages. These results show that engaging with messages on social media can have a deleterious effect on trust, even when those messages are not relevant to the task at hand or not representative of the actions of the individuals involved in the game.

Streszczenie:
Host quality can have dramatic effects on performance of biological control agents but its importance is understudied. We used a combination of field measurements and laboratory experiments to determine the range of foliar nitrogen (FN) that larvae of the alligatorweed flea beetle (Agasicles hygrophila) are exposed to in the field and its importance to larval development and dispersal. Seasonal variability in FN was assessed at field sites spanning southern to northern Louisiana every 2–3 weeks during the growing season for four years. In a series of laboratory experiments, alligatorweed FN was manipulated to examine its influence on larval development and survival (under different temperature regimes), adult biomass, and dispersal of the biological control agent, A. hygrophila. Foliar nitrogen and rearing temperature had strong independent effects on larval development rate. We demonstrated that increasing nitrogen in leaf tissues shortens larval A. hygrophila developmental time and increases survival to adulthood, regardless of exposure temperature during development. It also suggests that foliar nitrogen may have important effects on biological control of alligatorweed, particularly as a result of seasonal variation in temperature and plant nutrition at field sites and could contribute to observed variation in A. hygrophila efficacy in the field.

Streszczenie:
Major multilateral arms control and disarmament treaties dealing with weapons of mass destruction (WMD) often have mandated an international organization to monitor and verify State party compliance and to handle cases of non-compliance. There are marked differences in the mandates and technical capabilities of these bodies. Nonetheless, they often face the same operational and existential challenges. This report looks at the role of multilateral verification bodies, especially their secretariats, in dealing with compliance and enforcement, the extent to which they achieve “agency” and “influence” in doing so, and whether and how such capacities might be enhanced. In WMD organizations it is the governing bodies that make decisions about noncompliance and enforcement. The role of their secretariats is to manage the monitoring and verification systems, analyse the resulting data – and data from other permitted sources – and alert their governing bodies to suspicions of non-compliance. Secretariats are expected to be impartial, technically oriented and professional. It is when a serious allegation of non-compliance arises that their role becomes most sensitive politically and most vital. The credibility of Secretariats in these instances will depend on the agency and influence that they have accumulated. There are numerous ways in which an international secretariat can position itself for maximum agency and influence, essentially by making itself indispensable to member States and the broader international community. It can achieve this by engaging with multiple stakeholders, aiming for excellence in its human and technical resources, providing timely and sustainable implementation assistance, ensuring an appropriate organizational culture and, perhaps most of all, understanding that knowledge is power. The challenge for supporters of international verification organizations is to enhance those elements that give them agency and influence and minimize those that lead to inefficiencies, dysfunction and, most damaging of all, political interference in verification and compliance judgements.

Streszczenie:
From 2012-13 to 2018-19, the number of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) high school students taking an introductory computer science course rose from three thousand per year to twelve thousand per year. Our analysis examines the policy entrepreneurship that helped drive the rapid expansion of computer science education in CPS, within the broader context of the development of computer science at the national level. We describe how actions at the national level (e.g., federal policy action and advocacy work by national organizations) created opportunities in Chicago and, likewise, how actions at the local level (e.g., district policy action and advocacy by local educators and stakeholders) influenced agenda setting at the national level. Data from interviews with prominent computer science advocates are used to document and explain the multidirectional (vertical and horizontal) flow of advocacy efforts and how these efforts influenced policy decisions in the area of computer science. These interviews with subsystem actors––which include district leaders, National Science Foundation program officers, academic researchers, and leaders from advocacy organizations––provide an insider’s perspective on the unfolding of events and highlight how advocates from various organizations worked to achieve their policy objectives.

There is a growing body of literature that argues that normally women derive little benefit from cash crops. Some of the barriers leading to women having less benefit from cash crop value chains include cultural norms and power differences in access to, and control over, resources among actors in value chains. It is also argued that women’s participation in different forms of collective action help women to increase benefits to them through their increased agency, hence enabling them to utilise existing and diverse options for their empowerment. This paper explores how women have benefited from their engagement in sunflower commercialisation and how culture has influenced changes in access to, and control over, resources, including land, for their empowerment.
