The potential of airfoil optimisation for the specific requirements of airborne wind energy (AWE) systems is investigated. Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted at high Reynolds numbers for the S1223 airfoil and an optimised airfoil with thin slat. The optimised geometry was generated using the NSGA-II optimisation algorithm in conjunction with 2D-RANS simulations. The results showed that simultaneous optimisation of the slat and airfoil is the most promising approach. Furthermore, the choice of turbulence model was found to be crucial, requiring appropriate transition model

Airborne wind energy systems benefit from high-lift airfoils to increase power output. The airfoil shape is first optimised for the production phase and then adapted for the requirements of the return phase by modifying the flap setting. In recent times micro-air vehicles are utilised for various civilian and military applications. Because of their small size and low flight speeds they fly in the low Reynolds number (Re) regime. At such low Re the aerodynamic characteristics, most importantly the lift-to-drag ratio (Cl/Cd), are deteriorated. An improvement in (Cl/Cd) can lead to enhanced vehicle performance. The aerodynamic improvements can be achieved by optimising the wing profile geometry. In the present paper, optimisation of an airfoil is done to maximise (Cl/Cd) at Re = 1000. AbstractA multi-fidelity optimisation strategy has been developed in the present work, and its performance is illustrated through a series of test cases. The strategy is based on hybrid methods such that two genetic optimisation algorithms are employed, each coupled to a different fidelity level with transfer of information between them. The aim is that the low fidelity model, being less accurate but with a lower computational cost, performs a comprehensive search along the design space guiding the high fidelity model to the optimum region. This strategy has been shown to reduce the computatio

In the context of ambitious targets for reducing environmental impact in the aviation sector, dictated by international institutions, morphing aircraft are expected to have potential for achieving the required efficiency increases. However, there are still open issues related to the design and implementation of deformable structures. In this paper, we compare three constrained parameterisation strategies for the aerodynamic design of a morphing leading edge, representing a potential substitute for traditional high-lift systems. Abstract This work presents a concurrent design and multi-objective optimisation framework of horizontal axis wind turbine blades, made of composite material, for low wind speed. The optimisation model aims to minimise the structural mass of the blade whilst simultaneously maximising the turbine power output, subjected to three constraints viz. blade tip deflection, and Tsai-Hill and von Mises criteria. The design variables are blade shape and details of the internal blade structure. The control points and polynomial interpolation technique were adopted to determine the blade shape while the a

ABSTRACT The aerodynamic performance of a deployable and low-cost unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is investigated and improved in present work. The parameters of configuration, such as airfoil and winglet, are determined via an optimising process based on a discrete adjoint method. The optimised target is locked on an increasing lift-to-drag ratio with a limited variation of pitching moments. The separation that will lead to a stall is delayed after optimisation. Up to 128 design variables are used by the optimised solver to give enough flexibility of the geometrical transformation. As much as 2

A study to estimate the size of the cabin and major aircraft components as well as detect and avoid interference between internally placed components and the external surface, during the conceptual design synthesis and optimisation to explore the design space of a BWB, was conducted. Sizing of components follows the Bradley cabin sizing and rubber engine scaling procedures to size the cabin and engine respectively. The interference detection and avoidance algorithm relies on the ability of the Class Shape Transform parameterisation technique to generate polynomial functions of the surfaces of

Abstract Centrifugal turbines have recently regained interest of the engineering community as they could serve as cost-effective alternatives in diverse energy applications. In this device, the working fluid expands in a centrifugal flowpath and entails rotation of concentric rings of airfoil-shaped blades. Yet in their current design paradigm, their meanline performance estimation and optimisation have dubiously exploited axial turbine empirical loss correlations. To the authors knowledge, there are no theoretical nor practical foundation that could justify such practice. Hence, this paper in

Multi-objective optimization has been rising in popularity, especially within an industrial environment, where several cost functions often need to be considered during the design phase. Traditional gradient-free approaches, such as evolutionary algorithms, can be employed to compute a front of equally suitable solutions a designer can choose from, with a high computational cost though, particularly in high- dimensional design spaces. In this paper, a gradient-based algorithm is developed for efficiently tracing the Pareto front in bi-objective aerodynamic shape optimization problems, where an

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to develop an attractive tool for designers in the initial design phase of the damping of turbomachinery blades through dry friction underplatform dampers. The paper shows how, to this purpose, certain reasonable simplifications are introduced in the procedure and in the model, leaving the customary full high fidelity computations to the final design verification analysis. The key simplifications here considered are: the blade neck is modelled with Euler beam finite elements (FE) to speed up the updating of its dimensions during the optimisation process; t
