Abstract In the long eighteenth century, medical writers were quick to condemn “corpulence” or “corpulency” (the Georgian equivalent terms for “obesity”) in potential or actual mothers. Medical writing from the period criticizes the influence of corpulence on the reproductive health of women, claiming that corpulence's impact on female fertility is either obstructive, or eventually results in abortive maternity. However, this article's examination of fictional “fat” women, alongside contemporary medical opinions on corpulence's effect on female health, reveals that the medical condemnation of

Anther culture is one of the most popular methods for obtaining haploid triticale plants. The current paper has presented the study results of the efficiency of the method for obtaining haploid plants in promising winter triticale forms bred by the Federal Agricultural Research Center of South-East. There has been estimated haploproduction parameters for the studied genotypes on the nutrient media C-17 and P-2. There were no genotypes unresponsive to androgenesis. There has been found that the medium Potato-2 had a significant positive effect on the total number of embryogenic structures per 1

The short-lived emperor Macrinus had a son whose name, inscriptions reveal, was M. Opellius Antoninus Diadumenianus. Little is known about this figure, who is remembered through brief references in the late Roman breviaries and in Herodian, and in a short biography in the collection of imperial lives now known as the Historia Augusta (= HA). In 1889, Dessau argued that the lives of the Historia Augusta, which present themselves as written by six different authors in the Age of Constantine, were in fact written by a single writer closer to the year 400, an argument that has now all but prevaile

In this work we describe albinism in Angola as a public health issue. In Angola there is an estimated population of around 34 million people, 6818 are albinos and only around 2000 people are monitored by the national health service. Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a genetically inherited autosomal recessive condition and OCA2, tyrosine positive albinism, is the most prevalent type found across Angola. Due to the lack of melanin, people with albinism are more susceptible to the harmful effects of exposure to ultraviolet radiation. This population must deal with issues such as photophobia, decr

Learners with albinism potentially face a number of challenges in schools due to their skin condition. Albinism is an inherited condition from birth as a result of the absence of melanin pigment which usually changes the colour of the skin, hair and eyes. Albinism is usually greeted with disdain in most Bantu communities. In Zambia, some communities consider it a bad omen to give birth to an albino. Therefore, attempts are made to either kill baby albinos at birth or banish them from the community. In schools, learners with albinism are constantly abused and ridiculed by other learners and are

However, the complete albinos mentioned in the literature are very questionable since many different conditions should be met for a correct diagnosis of this aberration. We suggest that, wh

The Critically Endangered Patagonia frog (Atelognathus patagonicus) is endemic to the northwest Argentinian Patagonia, and inhabits small temporary lagoons isolated from each other. ABSTRACT: Malawi has experienced a boom in radio and television stations, newspapers, online media, and a democratic dispensation has been put in place, but reporting of human rights abuses in the country is unsatisfactory. One of the most pressing issues at the moment in the country is the killing, maiming, abduction and disappearance of persons with albinism. Persons with albinism face discrimination and stigma based on false beliefs. A content analysis of Malawian newspaper articles on the attacks on persons with albinism suggests that reporting is largely specific, reactive and super

A traditional explanation for the loss of pigmentation in cave dwellers is the absence of negative selection acting on surface species to remove all albinos from the population. Recently, however, evidence has been accumulating that albinism in the cavefish Astyanax mexicanus has several beneficial pleiotropic effects. Albino cavefish have higher catecholamine levels due to a loss-of-function mutation in the oca2 gene, higher resistance to anesthesia, and sleep less than their pigmented, surface-dwelling conspecifics. All of these traits are beneficial to cavefish, given the scarcity of food a

AbstractCrowding is a phenomenon in which the ability to recognize an object in a clutter deteriorates. It is, therefore, a fundamental aspect of object recognition and crucial in deciphering resolution. For visually impaired individuals, deficiency in crowding has a tremendous effect on vision and may reflect and predict the amount of deterioration in vision. It is well established that albinos suffer much more from crowding than normally sighted individuals under daylight luminance conditions. However, to our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate crowding in albino participants u
