We examined pendrin expression in various diseased thyroid tissues by immunohistochemistry (IHC) using antiserum raised against human pendrin and by real-time quantitative RT-PCR. In normal thyroids the antiserum reacted with the apical membrane of follicular cells and its immunoreactivity was faint. In this case report, we present a case with an unusually high course of inferior thyroid artery and its relationship with the recurrent laryngeal nerve on the right side of the neck of a 91 years-old formalin fixed male cadaver. Dissection showed that the inferior thyroid artery gave off branches between the branches of the recurrent laryngeal nerve following a sharp curvature descending downward to the thyroid gland. Knowledge of such a variation of the location and course of the inferior thyroid artery and the recurrent laryngeal nerve is important for surgical and radiological procedures.

We describe the clinical case by performing an operation for the thyroidectomy and cervical lymphadenectomy rightward because of the thyroid cancer. We disclosed that the inferior thyroid artery right ward is taking its origin directly from the common carotid artery. That is the rare anatomical variant of the inferior thyroid artery.
