Areal studies are a valuable source for identifying historical relationships between related and unrelated languages. Thanks to such studies, ancient features are revealed that show the formation and functioning of the literary language. Areal linguistics is closely connected with other sciences, especially with dialectology, the history of the people and ethnography, since a comprehensive study of dialects by the method of linguistic geography makes it possible to clarify the issues of the origin and development of Tatar dialects, some problems related to the ethnogenesis of the Tatar people.

Census enumeration districts (EDs) are not ‘natural’ areal units, and a strong presumption exists against their use for cartographic or analytical purposes. There is, however, some reason to suppose that their boundaries may coincide with divisions in the underlying social geography of an area, and that they therefore contain information which should not be lost in processing. A study of Newcastle upon Tyne EDs shows that ED boundaries do not, in fact, mark the boundaries of distinct areas. Spatial data are collected and represented as attributes of spatial objects embedded in a plane. Basis change is defined as the transfer of attributes from one set of objects to another. Methods of basis change for socioeconomic data are reviewed and are seen to differ in the assumptions made in each about underlying density surfaces. The article deals with water quality assessment in the upper Vltava basin, i.e. as far as Solenice. Both linear and areal investigations have been made. The Czech State Standard 757221 water quality classification has been used. The areal results are based on the balance of specific substance load. The research has been carried out in close cooperation with Wassergutestelle Elbe Hamburg within the framework of the Elbe Project. Basic data from 23 hydro-stations on Vltava (period 1990 - 1994) was provided by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute.
