Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) polymor-phism was used to determine genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationship in 4 species of Aristolochia viz A. indica Linn., A. saccata Wall., A. tagala Cham. and A. cathcartii Hook.f & T. A panel of 8 ISSR primers was screened representing di-nucleotide repeats, of which 57 polymorphic and informative patterns were selected to determine the genetic diversity. The consensus tree constructed using binary data from banding patterns generated by ISSR-PCR depicting that A. indica and A. cathc

In vitro propagation of Aristolochia saccata and A. cathcartii were carried out using nodal explant. In both the plants, nodal explants showed direct somatic embryogenesis when cultured on MS medium using various concentrations of BAP (1.0-4.0) and 2iP (1.0-4.0) separately or in combination with low concentration (0.5 and 1.0 mg l-1) of auxin (NAA). It was observed that BAP in combination with NAA was more effective for shoot induction than the hormones used separately. Among different combinations of NAA and BAP, 3.0 mg/l BAP + 1.0 mg/l NAA showed better

Aristolochia cathcartii Hook.f. & Thomson is a medicinal plant species native to Assam (India). Karbi people have traditionally used the plant to treat a variety of ailments. The population stock of this species has been rapidly depleting in its natural habitats due to over-utilization, habitat fragmentation, and other anthropogenic activities. Extensive field surveys were carried out to investigate the population status of A. cathcartii in various forest areas of Assam’s Karbi Anglong district. In 20 km of transects, a total of 36 quadrats were observed. A. cathcartii density, frequency o
