Streszczenie:
A high seed vigour is a desired trait in agronomy as it promotes the fast field emergence and homogeneity of harvest, which is necessary for producing quality food raw material. In this work, we studied the effects of the seed vigour on the bread quality. Relationships between the grain vigour, nutrients and anti-nutrients, contents, and bread volume were evaluated using the samples acquired from official variety trials. In the trials, the grain vigour was perceived as the grain ability to germinate in stress conditions, i.e. at 10°C in a solution of polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000 at osmotic pressure – 2 bars, the so called permanent wilting point). The results showed that the locations and years changed the bread volume but not the rank of the varieties tested in the trait. A higher grain vigour was significantly related to a higher falling number during two of the three trial years. The vigour was negatively related to the lipase activity. Moreover, other decomposing enzymes showed a similar tendency as was that found in the samples with the most diverse vigour. The grain samples with 80–90% vigour produced the greatest bread volume. The grain with a vigour below or above this range produced less voluminous loaves. The varieties of the highest quality produced the most voluminous bread from the samples reaching the grain vigour of 90–95%. The standard germination test was not related to the vigour and was less responsible for the bread quality. High-quality varieties had higher contents of total polyphenols than the varieties of lower quality, and the polyphenol content was correlated with the vigour (<i>r</i2 = 0.19**) and bread volume (<i>r</i2 = 0.08*). It can be concluded that the grain vigour is genetically controlled, thus the bread quality could be improved by grain breeding.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this paper is to show the importance of a real conversation – something that might be lacking these days. It is important to show that no matter what the context is, a conversation is what can either make us or break us. At the end of the day the most important conversation is the one we have with us, the inner part of us. But in order to reach that level we need to make sure that our own way of communication is placed on the right path, not for the others to follow but for us to be able to express what we really feel or think in a given situation. Talking about life is something that emerges from within because no matter how many books we read or how many people we meet, all with different life experiences, what is really important is how we come to understand everything, how we form our own vision, stick with it and then, only then, emerge into someone else’s perception about life, in general. No matter who you are, who you dream to be, who you were or who you are going to become, you need to make sure that you know the real you, that when you are facing your reflection in the mirror you are proud of you, even just for being you.

Streszczenie:
Tracking error is a ubiquitous tool among active and passive portfolio managers, widely used for fund selection, risk management, and manager compensation. This paper shows that traditional measures of the tracking error are incapable of detecting variations in skewness and kurtosis. As a solution, this paper introduces a new class of Quantile Tracking Errors (QuTE), which measures differences in the quantiles of return distributions between a tracking portfolio and its benchmark. Through an extensive simulation study, this paper shows that QuTE is six times more sensitive than traditional tracking measures to skewness and three times more sensitive to kurtosis. The QuTE statistic is robust to various calibrations and can easily be customized. By using the QuTE tracking measure during the Dot Com bubble and the Great Recession, this paper finds differences between the DIA and its benchmark, the DJIA, that otherwise would have gone undetected. Quantile based tracking provides a robust method for relative performance measurement and index portfolio construction.

Streszczenie:
I learned during twenty years in RECOOP HST Association that sharing ideas, plans and actions make a human network naturally productive. Also, I believed throughout these years that honesty is a key component of a healthy relationship. Not only because honesty helps us avoid harmful breaches of trust, but because it allows us to build creative collaborative research organizations. Nonetheless, in the last two years, we were challenged with a vast scale of crises. First, the COVID-19 pandemic and second, beginning February 24, 2022, the brutal Russian aggression against Ukraine have impacted everybody’s life causing significant concern and insecurity across the globe. Economic instability, disturbed work routines and disrupted family lives have caused higher risks of physical and mental disorders [1, 2]. Socially isolated people often feel lonely or depressed. Constantly lonely people have higher blood pressure, are more vulnerable to infection and are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Loneliness also interferes with an entire range of everyday functions such as sleep patterns, attention and logical and verbal reasoning [3-6]. At the time the pandemic calmed, the Russian barbaric aggression and bombardment of civilian targets exposed large populations to physical aggression, which grants more damage over time as many Ukrainians are losing human condition. Are we losing humanity also? Humans are good or bad, or predators also capable of great kindness. Humanity symbolizes human love and sympathy toward each other. Human qualities include honesty, integrity, courage, self-awareness and dedication. These qualities define who we are as human beings. In this troubled time, we must look for the good in people and strengthen the care for others. Gandhi taught us, “The power of humanity is the strength of individual commitment and the force of collective action.” When RECOOP HST Association does something to help in Ukraine, all of us gain a sense of being valuable, helpful and worthwhile. Gandhi’s words remind us, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” The human misery caused by Russia’s attacks only strengthen Ukrainians’ extraordinary spirit and their dedication to protect their family, culture and homeland. Putin is scrambled by the strength of Ukraine and getting more aggressive. His actions prove, like Gandhi wrote, “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” And we are stronger and better together. Keywords: Alzheimer’s disease, blood pressure, COVID-19, dementia, pandemic, physical and mental disorders, research organizations

Streszczenie:
As cervical cancer screening changes from cytology or Pap test to high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV-ar) test, primary worldwide, effective classification tests to decide who of the positive HPV-ar women should receive additional diagnostic evaluation to avoid unnecessary colposcopies and biopsies; with the evaluation of the performance of the dual staining p16 / Ki-67; and partial genotyping, HPV-16/18 for the triage of women with HPV-ar, positive; for the detection of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 or more severe (CIN-3 +) and CIN grade 2 or more severe (CIN-2+), diagnosed within 3 years after taking the sample; better risk stratification for CIN-3+ was demonstrated, compared to Pap; in women with positive results they have a higher risk than with Pap, for CIN-3 + (12.0 vs. 10.3%; 11.6%; P = .005); even with better risk stratification for CIN-3+, compared with Pap in women with HPV-ar, positive, regardless of genotype. The greatest balance against CIN-3+ was observed in HPV-16/18 negative women or with dual negative staining, with a low risk to extend the screening intervals. Double staining triage strategies required substantially fewer colposcopies for the detection of CIC-3+ compared to Pap, with a 32.1% reduction in colposcopies compared to the triage strategy currently recommended in the detection of HPV-ar, with the Pap. The results for CIN-2+ are similar. Conclusions; the management of women with HPV-ar test, positive in the detection of cervical cancer; with support from the Pap and dual staining p16 / Ki-67, alone or in combination with HPV- 16/18 genotyping, it provides better risk stratification than strategies based only on the Pap and in countries such as Mexico, where there is organized infrastructure can detect and prevent the cervical cancer.

Streszczenie:
As the climate continues to change, gaps in our understanding of how the altered environment will affect forest hosts and their pathogens widen. In some areas pathogens thought to be present for centuries are changing their behaviour. Dothistroma needle blight caused by the fungus Dothistroma septosporum in northwest British Columbia (BC), Canada, is a good example. In this area both the pathogen and the host, lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia), are considered native species, but here Dothistroma has been responsible for killing mature host trees, which is unprecedented. A plausible link between warmer, wetter summers and directional climate change has been suggested as the primary driver. Those environmental conditions appear to be affecting the host/pathogen relationship for other diseases in the neighbouring central interior of BC including comandra blister rust (Cronartium comandrae). Disrupted host/pathogen relationships tend to favour the short-lived more adaptable pathogens rather than their long-lived hosts. These changes in forest health have not been well accounted for in fields of forest science that have been built on stability and predictability.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Successful identification and characterisation of a titratable and safe oral agent that consistently increases blood pressure carries a great deal of appeal and the promise of negating physician and patient frustration and morbidity in a significant tranche of intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Universally, ICUs often house patients with mild hypotension rate limiting them from going to the ward, be that in the postoperative period, during recovery from critical illness, or in patients with decompensation of a chronic condition where augmented blood pressure for a period may be beneficial. These groups of patients are not traditionally “shocked” and perhaps do not require the full gamut of intensive management that we are used to providing to critically ill patients but are unable to be cared for on the ward. An oral vasopressor could provide this treatment and conceivably relieve some of the capacity constraints that units are facing.

This paper explores the importance of house and home for survivors of natural disaster: it protects from hazards and contributes to health, well-being and economic security. It examines the reconstruction of homes after a disaster as an opportunity to Build Back Better, re-defining ‘better’ as an holistic and people-centred improvement in housing. It questions the humanitarian shelter sector’s emphasis on structural safety while poor sanitation, inadequate vector control and smoke inhalation are responsible for many more deaths worldwide than earthquakes and storms. The paper extends this discussion by arguing that promoting ‘safer’ for a substantial number of families is better than insisting on ‘safe’ for fewer. The overall benefit in terms of lives saved, injuries avoided and reduced economic loss is greater when safer is prioritised over safe, and it frees resources for wider consideration of a ‘good home’ and the pursuance of ‘self-recovery’. The paper is informed by field research conducted in 2017 and 2018. Finally, implications for humanitarian shelter practice are outlined, with particular reference to self-recovery. It highlights a need for adaptive programming, knowledge exchange and close accompaniment so that families and communities can make informed choices with respect to their own recovery pathways.

Streszczenie:
RADS are typically associated with a solitary inhalation exposure to a very high concentration of an irritant gas, vapor, aerosol or fume. Evolution of asthma-like symptoms and airway hyperresponsiveness are consequences Prompt medical assistance is needed within the first 24 hours. The manuscript unveils suggested sequences of RADS’ pathogenesis. The airway injury causes sloughing off of damaged and dead airway cells. Putatively, escaping intracellular molecules, from dead and damaged cells, enter the extracellular space as damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs); they are also known as “alarmins.” The molecules promote an inflammatory response and orchestrate cellular repair and tissue healing. Different mediators and regulatory intermediaries, chemokines and cytokines, arachidonic acid products, soluble growth factors, prostaglandins, and matrix components take part in regenerative process. Lung macrophages provide clean-up and repair services: and, they impact airway hyperresponsiveness. Metalloproteinases and extracellular matrix improve the epithelial-tomesenchymal matrix. Airway wall thickening, subepithelial fibrosis, mucus metaplasia, myofibroblast hyperplasia, muscle cells hyperplasia and hypertrophy, and epithelial hypertrophy become features of the airway remodeling response.

Streszczenie:
In our efforts to address the problem of pupil behaviour in Scottish schools, perhaps the least effectively supported members of the school community have been teachers. A range of programmes has been used to support pupils, principally through strategies aimed at behaviour modification. Moreover, policy guidelines have also suggested that, in order to minimise disruption to their own and others’ learning, the starting point to dealing with the learning of young people experiencing social, emotional or behavioural difficulties (SEBD) is to deal with their behaviour. In particular, the Report of the Discipline Task Group, Better Learning – Better Behaviour (SEED, 2001) might be seen as prioritising behaviour over learning. This paper argues that behaviour and learning are inextricably linked and that dealing with behaviour as a prerequisite to addressing learning, therefore, may be the wrong starting point, thereby placing unfair expectations on both pupils and teachers. Additionally, if there is such a thing as ‘inappropriate’ behaviour, then the ‘appropriate’ behaviour with which it should be replaced is learning behaviour. A pedagogical focus on learning allows a conceptualisation of SEBD as a learning difficulty, thereby reconsidering the rights of young people who may be experiencing SEBD as co-terminus with, rather than in competition with, the rights of other learners (Visser and Stokes, 2003). Finally, the paper examines one possible pedagogical approach, namely metacognition and a mediational style of teaching, as a way of supporting teachers to deal with SEBD as a learning difficulty.
