AbstractBlindfolding is routinely used to aid the handling and loading of horses that are difficult to control. Fifteen relatively well-behaved horses of varying ages and disciplines were used to investigate the effects of blinkering and blindfolding on behaviour and heart rate in three situations: whilst stabled, when being led in a ménage, and during loading onto a lorry. Heart rate increased in all three situations when a blindfold was used, and when animals were handled by the least experienced of three handlers. The effects of blinkering on heart rate and behaviour were small compared wit

Stress during handling can negatively impact the welfare of an animal. Gradual habituation or systematic desensitisation can reduce this but is not always possible. Blindfolding has been shown to decrease stress indicators, including heart rate and struggling in cattle (Bos taurus), but has not been studied in domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). We surveyed 49 wildlife rescues, rehabilitators and veterinarians, and found that blindfolding and swaddling are widely used and believed to reduce stress and struggling in rabbits. However, these methods may simply preclude escape and result in

Visual hallucinations can occur in healthy subjects during prolonged visual deprivation. We investigated the visual percepts and the associated brain activity in a 37-year-old healthy female subject who developed visual hallucinations during three weeks of blindfolding, and then compared this activity with the cortical activity associated with mental imagery of the same patterns. We acquired fMRI data with a Siemens 3T Magnetom Allegra towards the end of the deprivation period to assess hallucination-related activity, and again after recovery from blindfolding to measure imagery-related activi

Physiotherapy aims to improve postural dysfunction, often using balance exercises. The effects of rehabilitation-based balance exercises on postural control in dogs remains understudied. This study aimed to assess the impact of specific balancing exercises and blindfolding on center of pressure parameters in healthy dogs. Thirteen healthy adult dogs participated in the study. Center of pressure parameters were measured using a pressure platform during quiet standing, external perturbation, head turn, and blindfolded trials. External perturbation significantly increased the area of the elliptic

Cattle have an innate fear of humans that may be reinforced during the potentially painful routine husbandry procedures performed by humans during the rearing of young calves. This fear may be reduced by positive handling of calves early in the rearing period (Krohn et al., 2001) and by use of calming devices such as blindfolds (Mitchell et al., 2004). Mitchell et al, (2004) found that blindfolding cattle during restraint and simulated husbandry procedures reduced struggling by 44% and decreased heart rate compared to control cattle with unrestricted vision. In this dissertation was examined the hydraulic pattern of media-priming effects by looking into Granger causality (a statistical test to determine if one time series is useful in forecasting another) between media coverage and the importance of issues people perceive. The hydraulic pattern hypothesis, an argument that increase in the importance of an issue is accompanied by decrease in a similar amount of importance, is embedded in most media-effect theories but has rarely been tested. To test the causality with media coverage, time series of six issues and six candidate variables were create

Chapter 5 shifts attention from the makers of anatomical models to their users by examining the creation and employment of anatomical models in mid-eighteenth-century midwifery schools. In particular, it considers the collection of midwifery models assembled by the Bolognese surgeon and man-midwife Giovanni Antonio Galli (1708–1782) in order to establish a midwifery school in his own residence. The collection included some two hundred models realized in different materials, such as wax, clay, and glass, and was subsequently acquired by Pope Benedict XIV who donated it to the Institute of the S

The difference between the terms ‘subject’ and ‘identity’ is outlined, and the chapter explores how psychoanalysis deepens poststructuralism’s questioning of the view that consciousness is an

"The Cases for and against Blindfolding the Jury11This chapter is adapted, in part, from three prior publications: Diamond and Casper, 1992, Diamond et al., 1989, and Diamond and Vidmar, 2001. I use the term blindfolding, rather than blinding, because when information is withheld from an individual, the individual may fill in the missing information based on previous experience and outside knowledge, sometimes correctly and sometimes incorrectly (i.e., peeks through the blindfold). A decision maker who peeks is not effectively blinded." In Blinding as a Solution to Bias. Elsevier, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/b978-0-12-802460-7.00017-6.
