Gruca, Véronique. "Des histoires de famille. Ethique, sociabilité et deuil en Mongolie bouriate". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université Paris sciences et lettres, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024UPSLP039.
Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis asks what it means to be a family in Mongolia, and examines the role of ethics in this matter : how does the challenge of being a ‘good' (sain) person align with one's place in the family, especially among the Buryat herder-farmers of the north-east of he country? I delve into this broad question through eight stories that describe the relational dynamics within a network of ‘relatives' (ah düü) and/or neighbours. These stories, which take place in various contexts, also explore diverse subjects such as the relation to the dead and mourning, shamanic rituals, the relationship to the ‘land' (nutag), issues related to mining in Mongolia and approaches to wealth

Pełny tekst źródłaThe purpose of this dissertation is twofold. First, it is an anthropological study of a Mongolian people of southern Siberia, the Buryats of Lake Baikal, and the changes in their society over time and space. Drawing on diverse sources (Russian colonial archives, soviet ethnography, popular folklore, and personal fieldwork), this study brings to light the ideological differences between hunters (west of Lake Baikal) and cattle-breeders (east of the lake). Second, it is a comparative study of Siberian shamanism in general, which is rooted in hunting ideology. Both shamanism and hunting adhere to a logic of alliance. What the hunter does in reality, the shaman does symbolically. His raison d’être is to hunt the soul, a sort of flesh soul, which nourishes man's bone-soul the way animal flesh does his body. The shaman's legitimacy is assured through a supernatural alliance: he marries the daughter of the spirit of the nurturing forest. His behaviour during the "trance" represents a repayment for what he has taken (the wife and the soul). The flesh-soul is a substance exchanged between the human and the supernatural worlds; the bone-soul is a unit which is reincarnated within the same human descent group or the same animal species. With livestock breeding, where interest in the bone-soul prevails, shamanism shifts towards a logic of filiation and develops warring and healing activities

Pełny tekst źródłaThe graduation deals with nomadic conceptions of space based on buryat folklore (songs, epics, wishes, riddles, proverbs), representing the collective memory of the Buryat. A "nomadic topography" and a "nomadic sociography" are elaborated. The characteristics of the "nomadic topography" are: the construction of space by a south-north bipolarity; a geography of rivers and mountains showing the continuity from the common to the mythic; a vertical bipolarity of heaven and earth symbolised among other things by the stake to tie up horses or created by the hearth fire; the course of the sun determining the nomadic move; a particular symbolism of the yurt's interior with regard to universal space. The characteristics of the "nomadic sociography" are: the importance of family and ancestors as spatial and temporal references; the double role of love both allowing to make space men's homeland and leading to transgressions out of social space; the symbolism of the bride's departure and arrival during the buryat marriage; the importance of the horse as a mean to transgress spatial limits and to appropriate space. The graduation includes a folklore collection realized by the author from Aga-, Sèlèngè and Western-Buryat, Buryat in Mongolia and Buryat having returned from China

Pełny tekst źródłaThe Agudas, also known as "the Brazilians of Benin", are the descendants of both slave traders and former slaves who "returned" from Brazil to today's Benin, Togo and Nigeria during the 19th century. To this day, they base their identity on evocations of their Brazilian origins. One of the main identity markers of the Agudas is the festival of the Bourian (a Portuguese word meaning "little she-donkey"), which brings Christians and Muslims together around a codified masquerade, where samba tunes are sung – with no understanding of their lyrics – in Portuguese, a language that is no longer spoken in this region of Africa. The various Bourian groups, often in competition with each other, evoke in a playful way their Brazilian ancestors, in a dynamic context where each local population carries out masquerades related to the vodoun. Focusing on Southern Benin, this thesis aims to understand the meaning of the Bourian, as well as the identity issues and circulations in which the Bourian is involved, while keeping an historical and comparative perspective with Brazil

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis, based on several ethnographic surveys among Halh Mongols and Aga Buryats (Russia), as well as written sources in Mongolian, Russian and Western languages, addresses the nomadic pastoralism among the Mongols. By studying the way herders conceive the agency of their animals (horses, camel, cattle, sheep, goats and dogs) and rely on it, it is shown that animal husbandry, far from being reducible to a mere relation of domination, is a complex system made of multiple interactions between humans and animals, who mutually adapt to each other to build community. Through an abundant cartography based on GPS records, the analysis of the spatial features of cohabitation brings to light the importance of the triadic human-animal-environment relation which contributes to maintaining the community. This multispecies community engages means of communication which mobilize the five senses and reveal the animals’ cognitive capacities. Herders build on those in situation of human-animal cooperation, in which the role played by the animals is differentiated depending on their individual characteristics. Despite the environmental, socio-economic and political differences between the two fields, the comparative perspective highlights elements of a Mongol continuum. The assemblages and delicate balances prevailing in the interspecific relations reveal the large autonomy of animals, which are expected by herders to play an active role in pastoral tasks
