Skeletal proteins play an important role in determining erythrocyte membrane biophysical properties. To study whether membrane deformability and stability are regulated by the same or different skeletal protein interactions, we measured these two properties, by means of ektacytometry, in biochemically perturbed normal membranes and in membranes from individuals with known erythrocyte abnormalities. Treatment with 2,3-diphosphoglycerate resulted in membranes with decreased deformability and decreased stability, whereas treatment with diamide produced decreased deformability but increased stabil

This study investigates the structural mechanics of membranes in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) cells, with a particular focus on mechanical stressors and the resultant membrane deformation. Membrane defects such as cracks, pinholes, and thinning can occur due to mechanical stressors. Structural mechanical simulations can predict the membrane behaviour under stress if the boundary conditions are set accurately and the material models are chosen to fit experimental data. The stoichiometry of anode was 1.2 and cathode was 4 as the benchmark for comparison. When the stoichiometry flow rate of cathode was 4 and anode decreased to 1.05, which caused the hydrogen starvation on the downstream. The decrease of cathode stoichiometry from 4 to 2 resulted in less water diffusing to membrane and slight decrease of the conductivity on the gas-inlet segment. The cathode stoichiometry of 1.2 showed better performance

Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been conducting research and development on a thermochemical water-splitting cycle featuring iodine- and sulfur-compounds (called an IS process) as one of promising heat utilization systems of High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactors. We have prepared polymer electrolyte membranes by the radiation-induced graft polymerization and cross-linking methods and then have investigated their applicability to electro-electrodialysis (EED) for concentrating HI in an HI-I2-H2O mixture. For practical applications, EED membranes are required to be stable in the severe environment

The production of a renewable energy from biomass, such as ethanol by fermentation, has received special attention as a consequence of the world energy crisis. Nowadays, gasohol E-10, a mixture of 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline has been widely used in vehicles in Thailand and there is an attempt to promote the use of E-20 or E-85 in the vehicles in the near future. Ethanol fermentation by conventional batch suffers from various constrains such as, low cell density and rather time consuming. Although continuous fermentation by suspended cell culture can be used to speed up the process, it is more

Objectives were to further characterize activity spectra of dairy propionibacteria bacteriocins, jenseniin G and propionicin PLG-1, purify them, examine the role of cell walls in resistance, examine their interactions with cytoplasmic membrane, explain producer immunity, and clone the responsible genes. Inhibitory spectra of both bacteriocins were further characterized. Propionicin was most effective in controlling Gram-positive, rather than Gram-negative organisms; it controlled growth of sensitive cells both in a culture medium and a model food system. Jenseniin inhibited yogurt cultures and

Clavibactermichiganensissubsp. michiganensis(Cmm), the causal agent of bacterial wilt and canker of tomato, is the most destructive bacterial disease of tomato causing substantial economic losses in Israel, the U.S.A. and worldwide. The goal of the project was to unravel the molecular strategies that allow Cmm, a Gram-positive bacterium, to develop a successful infection in tomato. The genome of Cmm contains numerous genes encoding for extracellular serine proteases and cell wall degrading enzymes. The first objective was to elucidate the role of secreted serine proteases in Cmm virulence. Mut

The general objective of this study was to develop rationally designed mimetic antagonists (and agonists) of the PK/PBAN Np class with enhanced bio-stability and bioavailability as prototypes for effective and environmentally friendly pest insect management agents. The PK/PBAN family is a multifunctional group of Nps that mediates key functions in insects (sex pheromone biosynthesis, cuticular melanization, myotropic activity, diapause and pupal development) and is, therefore, of high scientific and applied interest. The objectives of the current study were: (i) to identify an antagonist bioph

Fifty six diverse spring wheat cultivars were evaluated for genetic variation and heritability for thermotolerance in terms of cell-membrane stability (CMS) and triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) reduction. The most divergent cultivars for thermotolerance (Danbata-tolerant and Nacozari-susceptible) were crossed to develop an F8 random onbred line (RIL) population. This population was evaluated for co-segragation in CMS, yield under heat stress and HSP accumulation. Further studies of thermotolerance in relations to HSP and the expression of heterosis for growth under heat stress were perform
