We test predictions of the Morton and James hypothesis, which states that high termite diversity promotes high lizard diversity. We explore consumption of termites by lizards in the Brazilian Cerrado, a system that shares many similarites with arid Australia whose fauna formed the basis for the original hypothesis. We found that Cerrado lizards prey heavily on termites. Several species had >40% of their diet consisting of termites, some species reached up to 80%. However, lizards prey on termites independently of their diversity in the environment and do not show niche segregation in relati

Termites play an important role as ecosystem engineers in many tropical environments, acting as herbivore-detritivore organisms and strongly influencing vegetation structure and composition by modifying soil properties, providing nutrients by recycling the organic matter, and direct feeding on plants, notably in the Cerrado (Savanna) of Brazil. To evaluate the intensity of termite foraging on Cerrado plants, we recorded plants higher than 25 cm, which exhibited termite activity along nine transects (2 x 50m), at the Estação Ecológica de Pirapitinga (EEP), in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

The taxonomy of the South American termite genus Labiotermes Holmgren (sensu novo) is revised, including identification keys to soldiers and workers, and distribution maps for all 10 species. Paracornitermes Emerson is treated as a new synonym of Labiotermes. Two new species are described: L. guasu, from the Amazon rain forest and L. oreadicus, from the Cerrado of central Brazil. Paracornitermes caapora Bandeira & Cancello and P. hirsutus Araujo are placed under the synonymy of L. orthocephalus. The imagos of L. emersoni and L. orthocephalus are described for the first time. The workers of

Fire management is a common practice in several reserves in the Cerrado, but its influences on bird reproduction remain unknown. In addition, the nesting biology of the Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) has been studied in numerous environments, but not in tropical grasslands managed by fire. This study examined the effects of fire management on the nesting biology of A. cunicularia in Emas National Park, State of Goias, central Brazilian Cerrado. AbstractTermites are key components of tropical ecosystems, particularly in the Cerrado biome, where they dominate animal biomass and play crucial roles in nutrient cycling and soil formation. Their abundance and nutritional value make them primary food sources for various Cerrado animals, influencing predator diversity and several ecological interactions. Additionally, termite mounds serve as essential shelters for a wide range of fauna, aiding in thermoregulation and providing refuge from harsh environmental conditions, including wildfires. AbstractThe impact of deadwood in ecosystems is dependent on its longevity, as determined by decay rates controlled by decay agents. Despite the importance of macroclimate, significant variation of decay rates within a given macroclimatic envelope has been reported. Such variation may be driven by local‐scale microenvironmental conditions as regulated by the plant community structure as well as the presence of specific biotic and abiotic decay agents, decoupling the relation between macroclimate conditions and deadwood decay rates. In this study, we evaluated the relation between local‐scale v
