Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis explores the cinematic adaptation of Modern Greek prose fictions from 1960 to 2015, with a focus on the adaptation of Yannis Maris’ detective novels on screen in the 1960s and 1970s. The first part aims to shed some light on the concept of adapting a prose work for the cinema, making use of diverse theoretic approaches, including the Polysystem Theory. The second part adopts a chronological approach to offer a contextualized presentation of Greek and foreign film adaptations of Modern Greek novels, longer novellas, novelettes, and stories from 1960 to 2015 – a practice that appeared early on in Greek cinema. In the third part of the thesis, which mainly focuses on the Polysystem Theory and follows a comparative approach, Yannis Maris’ detective novels are examined from a dual perspective, both as new cultural goods in their own right within the field of reception, and as cinematic works resulting from a creative process that brings a new perspective to the original literary works

Pełny tekst źródłaFive hundred and two films of the greek popular cinema-melodramas and comedies-, masterpieces as well as "flops", formed the body of the study where it appears that this cinema is a precious representation of the Greek society and culture. It has been structured in three great chapters : the thematic constants, the narrative structures and the stylistics of these two cinematographic genres. Melodrama shows a double and contradictory vocation: in one way as a cry of revolt it opens a breach in the social order, in the other; with his conservative side it reaffirms the necessary perreniality of law and morality. Comedy functions as un extraordinary way to investigate the social reality of Greece after the second world war, it develops its criticism with all the specific procedures of humor inherited from Aristophanes. The notion of fatality prevails in the popular cinema, fatality to which the hero of melodrama submits fimself, contrary to the one of comedy who refuses to bow. The same structures of tears and laughters are found in these two cinematographic genres as in the two emblematic figures of ancient tragedy and comedy, a sign of perpetuity of the Greek culture

The first part refers to the historical events. After the historic frame the second part flows that refers to the Asia's Minors photographers who gave the first images from the arrival of the Greek army at Smyrni, as well as to the Greek painters, photographers and operateurs. The first cinematographic witnesses are the greek documentaires. The third part is devoted to the first cinamatographic productions. This part closes with a chapter dedicated to the melos of the period. The fourt part refers to the modern greek cinema and the new creators. The fifth part examins the way which the Greek immigrants and the Armenian stage makers saw the events and closes with the tele presentation and the theater of shadows. At the end is a reference to the Turkish cinema

Pełny tekst źródłaThe generalisation of talking films in the late 1920s and early 1930s brought about a major change in the distribution of foreign films on the French market. The Hollywood majors led the way in exploring various options in order to maintain their domination on that market. During the first half of the 1930s, a powerful dubbing industry gradually developped in France with subtitling growing on a much smaller scale. Knowing how a dubbed or subtitled version is made is essential to any aesthetic appreciation of a dubbed or subtitled film. The aesthetic implications vary according to the period, the technique and the way translators or actors work. However, some constant features can be outlined : with dubbing, the soundtrack is partly or fully replaced ; with subtitling, the image is altered. Both methods imply a different treatment of the voice. In a dubbed version, a new voice is given to an unchanged character, in a reincarnation process ; in a subtitled version, the voice becomes visible through the subtitle, it becomes an image

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis discusses the representation of urban landscape in Greek films during the urban reconstruction period (1950-1974). Considering the filmography of popular cinema as a primary source of collective memory of the cityscape before and after its reconstruction, this research explores the film images of the Greek capital landscape, which was characterized by historical discontinuity, architectural rupture and collective amnesia. The thesis seeks to examine both the city’s influence on cinema and the cinema’s impact on the city, exploring how cinema created a cinematographic geography, projected urban models, reflected city imageries and formed utopian visions of historical continuity. The thesis explores various topics relating to the theme of the city, such as the practice of shots in location and the recording of urban spaces, house description before and after the reconstruction, the plots about house demolition, replacement or construction, and the emergence of new symbols in Athens geography. The thesis explores both hegemonic and alternative representations of the city. The nostalgic utopia often found in post war films rejecting reconstruction, the emergence of a modernity discourse, critical views on working class spaces, and the city as a monument or as a showcase of the tourist industry are also examined. For the presentation of a panoramic view of Athens cityscape a corpus of 110 films, representative of various trends in Greek post war cinematography, has been examined

Pełny tekst źródłaIn opposition to Western crime fiction (British and French detective novels, American hard-boiled crime fictions, Italian giallo), Greek crime fiction is totally unknown in the field of academic research (both in Greece and France).This thesis aims to fill this gap by focusing on a literary genre which, more often than not, has been badly seen by the Greek literary establishment. The two questions which drew our attention revolved around the Hellenic dimension of the genre (is there something as such as Greek crime fiction?) and around the evolution of Greek crime fiction over time (is there a continuity or a major shift between former and recent Greek crime fiction?).Our thesis is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on the belated emergence of the genre in Greece and on the history of Greek crime fiction from 1953 to 2013. The second part analyses the poetics of recent crime fiction production in Greece (1995-2013), in comparison to the novels or short stories of Greek writers of the fifties and sixties (authors such as Yannis Maris, Christos Chairopoulos, Athina Kakouri, Andronikos Markakis, Takis Papageorgiou). In our second part, we also try to identify the genre in which Greek crime fiction expresses itself (detective story? Hard-boiled story? Thriller? Mediterranean Noir?). Finally, we analyse the main characters who appear in the plot and the theme of the city. The third part aims at showing that contemporary authors of Greek crime fiction lead an investigation on the history of Greece (and its society) and on Hellenic identity. Pełny tekst źródłaThe Greek novels and The Metamorphoses of Apuleius, even if it is in different terms for the last, are prose fictions which are based on topoi, and the figure of the Other is one of them. Although the Greek world was radically different of what it was in the fifth century BC, time during which Greek identity is contructed as opposed to the figure of the barbaros, the authors of novels, who wrote from the first century BC onward, used some stereotypes inherited from classical period, which was celebrated by the Second Sophistic movement. The aim of this thesis is to study in detail some elements of the representation of the Other to determine who it is, how he behaves, what makes him other. Then, from this sketch, necessarily incomplete, to evaluate what this representation says about the image of Greek identity in the imperial age, according to the play of the mirror detected by F. Hartog in the text of Herodotus. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to the relationship between man and animal and to the image of savagery, in order to explore the novelistic limits of humanity. The second part concentrates on elements that classical period had particularly insisted on to promote the distinction between Greeks and non-Greeks : the linguistic criterion, the way to make war, and the politic discourse on the barbaric institutions. The third part study the place of the gods and of religious practices in the definition of the Other. I hope to contribute to the understanding of novel genre and of cultural representations of the « greco-roman- empire »
