This habilitation thesis presents the findings of the sea level change studies conducted at the Institute of Geodesy of the Technischen Universität Darmstadt betweeen 2001 and 2013. Sea level is an important indicator of climate change. It has been traditionally measured by coastal tide gauges and by satellite altimetry since 1993. Tide gauge measurements indicate a coastal average sea level rise of 1-2 millimeters per year over the 20th century. Over the last two decades the average sea level rise increased to 3.3±0.7 millimeters per year, consistently measured by tide gauges and satellite

The first part of the study suggests a spatial pattern recognition methodology to characterize the spatial variations of sea level and to investigate the sea level footprints of climatic signals. The study aims to assess vulnerability to sea level rise of the municipal population from the coastal region of the state of São Paulo. This vulnerability assessment focus on degrees of vulnerability and what are the main factors that affect vulnerability to sea level rise in the municipalities. The study has included indicators of vulnerability to sea level rise which were represented through vulnerability mapping reflecting the degrees of adaptive capacity, sensitivity, exposure and total vulnerability of the municipalities. The results have shown that São Vicente, São Sebastião, Praia Grand

Climate variability is important to understand as its effects on groundwater are complex than surface water. Climate association between Groundwater Storage (GWS) and sea level changes have been missing from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, demanding a requisite study of their linkage and responses. The current dissertation is primarily focused on the ongoing issues that have not been focused on the previous literatures. Firstly, the study evaluated the effects of short-term persistence and abrupt shifts in sea level records along the US coast by utilizing popular robust statisti

Climate change is now an issue of critical concern throughout the world. In 2014, the Fifth Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change proclaimed that the 21st century will pose some of the most acute challenges due to the accelerating impacts of climate change. Bangladesh, a South Asian developing country, is considered the sixth most vulnerable nation in the world due to its geographical settings (GCRI, 2015). The country faces extreme climatic events including sea level rise, salt water intrusion into arable lands, and the increased risk of severe storms, cyclones, floods, flash floods and d

Present models of Holocene estuary evolution are driven largely by changes in relative sea-level (RSL) with little reference to long-term changes in fluvial regime and regional climate. Recent US studies of estuarine sequences have shown that decadal-centennial scale fluctuations in river discharge and freshwater inflow can be inferred by changes in estuarine palaeosalinity and that the timing of these events reflect changes in regional precipitation. It is therefore becoming apparent that estuarine sequences may hold an archive of mid-late Holocene climate change information, as well as being

This work examines the use of pedo-properties to identify dune soil system responses to environmental change on the Sefton coast, based on the development of conceptual pedogenic models. Previous environmental change and shoreline dynamics are determined through O.S. maps and aerial photographs, while present day processes are investigated through a dune-toe photographic survey and seasonal monitoring by fixed point photography. Topsoil (0-5 cm) physico-chemical characteristics are presented in a series of baseline GIS maps, displaying spatial pedo-property variation across the dune landscape.

Global climate change is predicted to affect timing and severity of disturbance events (e.g., fire, drought, hurricanes, wind storms, and inundation), but the extent of these disturbance events and their impacts on natural ecosystems may vary regionally. Rising sea level, increased frequency and intensity of tropical storms, and altered inundation regimes are likely to create changing environmental conditions in low-lying coastal ecosystems. These large scale disturbances may increase resource availability and regeneration spaces, reduce competition, and possibly increase community vulnerabili

The present study had two main objectives. The first was to determine the degree of understanding of climate change, sea level and sea level rise among middle school students. Combining open-ended questions with likert-scaled questions, we identified student conceptions on these topics in 86 students from 7th and 8th grades during 2012 and 2013 before and after implementing a Curriculum Unit (CU). Additional information was obtained by adding drawings to the open-ended questions during the second year to gauge how student conceptions varied from a verbal and a visual perspective. Misconception
