Streszczenie:
Purpose – This study aims to investigate the antecedents of code of ethics’ quality with specific regard to the peculiarities of corporate governance, which include the role of the primary shareholders within the firm, the role and influence of independent directors on the board, the effect of board size on the strategic decision-making process and the influence of the chief executive officer’s (CEO) age and gender diversity. Design/methodology/approach – A sample of 248 Italian public companies publishing a code of ethics as of 2011 is used to test the hypotheses through Tobit regression models. Findings – A positive or negative impact is derived from the implementation of a high-quality code of ethics. Codes of ethics are strongly influenced by the ownership structure of the company given the critical role played by primary shareholders with larger stakes in influencing the quality of a code. Moreover, the lower the number of independent directors, the higher the firm’s propensity to invest in code of ethics’ quality. Similar results were found in relation to board size and CEO age, where smaller boards and younger CEOs are more inclined to implement higher-quality codes of ethics. Originality/value – Results support the argument that when linked to a sustainability strategic orientation focused on a high-quality code of ethics, corporate governance characteristics reveal influences that differ from those found in prior literature.

AbstractCodes of conduct are viewed here as a community's attempt to communicate its expectations and standards of ethical behavior. Many organizations are implementing codes, but empirical support for the relationship between such codes and employee conduct is lacking. We investigated the long term effects of a collegiate honor code experience as well as the effects of corporate ethics codes on unethical behavior in the workplace by surveying alumni from an honor code and a non-honor code college who now work in business. We found that self-reported unethical behavior was lower for respondents who work in an organization with a corporate code of conduct and was inversely associated with corporate code implementation strength and embeddedness. Self-reported unethical behavior was also influenced by the interaction of a collegiate honor code experience and corporate code implementation strength.

The accuracy of the diagnosis code is a statement that shows a code for a convincing diagnosis, and has been said to be certain and clear according to the ICD-10 guidelines. The purpose of this study was to obtain an overview of the analysis of the accuracy of injury codes and external causes of injury in emergency care electronic medical records at the Jakarta Islamic Hospital Sukapura. This research is descriptive research with a Mix Methode approach. Data collection techniques using observation and interview methods. Samples were taken using saturated sampling techniques totaling 81 electronic medical records of emergency care patients. The accuracy of the injury code is 22% correct, and the accuracy of the external cause of injury code incorporated in traffic accident cases and other accident cases is 0% correct. The low accuracy of injury codes was due to not adding character 5, block code errors, and errors in determining code categories. The results of the accuracy of the external cause of injury code obtained were 0% correct because 80 electronic medical records of emergency care patients did not contain the code for the external cause of injury. Factors that hinder the accuracy of injury codes and external causes of injury are influenced by man factors, namely high workload, dependence on ICD-10 codes on doctors, and lack of feedback audits. Then the influence of material factors, namely the incompleteness of supporting documents, lack of detail in diagnosis, and lack of chronological letters of events. Then the influence of method factors, namely unsupportive policies and procedures, lack of training and understanding, and weak application of external cause of injury codes.

Building codes are basics of the legal framework for building construction, building energy efficiency and building operation. Through stipulated standards of performance, safety and environmental impact, these regulations determine the shape of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems. With their impact on climate change and race to achieve energy efficiency, codes are increasingly occupying more and more space in HVAC system design and cost estimating. In this paper, we engage with how these key building codes (International Building Code (IBC), International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and ASHRAE standards) influence HVAC system development. The challenge for contractors and engineers trying to comply with and satisfy these codes, as part of the paper, is in balancing energy efficiency with safety and costs. Additionally, the paper offers insight on the long term cost savings associated with compliance in operational savings and system longevity and benefit for enabling technological advancement of HVAC as regulations drive it. Besides that, the paper also discusses future development, including introducing smart HVAC systems, renewable energy technologies, and resilience strategies for responding to climate change, to confirm that the building code adopts efficient, sustainable, and resilient HVAC systems. Keywords: Building codes, HVAC systems, energy efficiency, sustainability, indoor air quality (IAQ), cost estimation, ASHRAE, International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), International Building Code (IBC), smart HVAC systems, resilience.

Thermal-hydraulic system computer codes are extensively used worldwide for analysis of nuclear facilities by utilities, regulatory bodies, nuclear power plant designers, vendors, and research organizations. The computer code user represents a source of uncertainty that can influence the results of system code calculations. This influence is commonly known as the “user effect” and stems from the limitations embedded in the codes as well as from the limited capability of the analysts to use the codes. Code user training and qualification represent an effective means for reducing the variation of results caused by the application of the codes by different users. This paper describes a systematic approach to training code users who, upon completion of the training, should be able to perform calculations making the best possible use of the capabilities of best estimate codes. In other words, the program aims at contributing towards solving the problem of user effect. In addition, this paper presents the organization and the main features of the 3D S.UN.COP (scaling, uncertainty, and 3D coupled code calculations) seminars during which particular emphasis is given to the areas of the scaling, uncertainty, and 3D coupled code analysis.

A creole is a pidgin that has attained the first generation of the speaker. The formation of a creole might be influenced by several factors and the two of them are code-switching and the influence of a dominant language. In relation to the two factors, there is a creole that might fit the situation. The creole is the Tetun-Portu language and the creole is presumably invented from the combination between the Tetun-Terik language and the Portuguese language. The backbone of the language might be adopted from the Tetun-Terik language but the codes have been dominated by the Portuguese language. The invention of the creole might be related to the Portuguese occupation in the Timor Island several centuries ago. Due to the interesting characteristics, the researcher would like to investigate the creole further. In conducting the study, the focus will be on how the code-switching influence the invention of the creole and the Portuguese influence within the invention of the creole itself. The findings of the study confirm that the Tetun-Portu language might be considered as a creole because it has completely different structures and it has adopted more codes from the Portuguese language. Keywords: Creole, Tetun-Terik, Tetun-Portu, code-switching, Portuguese influence

Starting with the Cadbury code in 1992, various national and international Corporate Governance (CG) codes have been issued all over the world. So far, empirical studies have revealed mixed results concerning the effects and outcomes of code implementation and thus supported the hypothesis of a ‘one system does not fit all’ approach in CG. Therefore, this paper empirically analyses influence factors on compliance with the German Corporate Governance Code for a large sample of 306 listed firms in 2015. We chose German companies because of the specific institutional settings in Germany, e.g., the strong influence of founder families on a firm’s management or the relevance of debt financing. It is assumed that the country-specific institutional setting limits the transferability of results of US and UK studies. Thus, we used the German setting to derive relevant influence factors on Code compliance. In addition, we applied a more sophisticated measure of Code implementation than previous studies. Overall, we find a significant positive effect of ownership dispersion and firm size on Code compliance, whereas the other influence factors, e.g., family influence or the supervisory board’s size, reveal the right direction of impact but not the required level of statistically significance. In contrast to institutional theory, we find a negative although statistically insignificant impact of the strength of foreign investors’ influence on Code compliance. Overall, our results indicate that the institutional setting is not decisive for Code compliance. Instead, we assume that the main rationale for Code compliance is not the reduction of agency conflicts but the alignment with peer group practices as indicated by the variable company size. Future research should investigate the peer effects on the level of Code compliance in detail.

The COVID-19 has influenced customers' purchasing behavior, especially the acceptability of mobile payments based on quick response (QR) codes. Sustainability is key for retail to thrive. In this context, customer acceptance of QR code–enabled m-payments needs further improvement. This study examines the critical antecedents affecting QR code–enabled m-payments acceptance intention, with the aim of determining why customers must accept QR codes. The Mobile Technology Acceptance Model was modified, as we examined ease of use, usefulness, transaction convenience, transaction speed, attitudes, optimism, and personal innovativeness to investigate customers’ adoption of mobile shopping in grocery stores using questionnaire survey data of 351 respondents. Most constructs in the model influence shoppers’ intentions for accepting QR code–enabled m-payments. Consumers are more likely to use mobile shopping channels if the system is simple and easy to use. A validated model would be an invaluable guide for researchers during the creation and improvement of QR code–enabled m-payments studies.

The article is devoted to the philosophical analysis of the role of national mantality and cultural codes in the development of digital society. The article explores various approaches to the definitions of the concepts of mentality and national cultural code. The main features of mentality have been analyzed. Among them are the following: 1) the mentality is historically and culturally determined; 2) mentality is a structural part of individual consciousness; 3) mentality is changeable and transforms along with changes of the cultural field. The emphasis is placed on the synergetic approach which most fully takes into account the variability of various elements of culture and the relationship between them. The national code of culture is defined as a system of representations, images and stereotypes of consciousness and behavior, which has a non-hierarchical historical character, reflects national values, and also serves as the basis of national identity. It is emphasized that the national cultural code is closely related to the national value system, reflects it, but is not identical to it, since, unlike the value system, the elements of the cultural code are not hierarchical. Despite its ideal nature, the cultural code influences the material aspects of culture through the motivation of the behavior and activities of its carriers. Along with the national cultural code, the concept of the “cultural code of personality” is being formed in modern scientific literature. The cultural code is not something immutable. It can change under the influence of various factors. The article highlights such trends in the transformation of national cultural codes under the influence of digitalization as universalization, localization and individualization. Today the national cultural code serves as a launching pad for the formation of innovation and individual creativity that transcends national cultural boundaries. It has been concluded that the national cultural code provides a kind of “worldview immunity” against the “dark” side of digitalization without hindering the use of its positive possibilities.Key words: Mentality, Cultural Field, Cultural Code, Values, Consciousness, Economy, Digitalization, Society.

The code at the target university requires that students verbally request and receive permission before initiating sexual conduct and eschew sexual conduct with persons who are under the influence of alcohol, prescription medications, or illegal drugs. Results:In both studies, majorities of sexually active men and women reported engaging in sexual conduct that violates the code, as well as having been the target of such behavior. Sexual activity under the influence of alcohol and without prior verbal consent were most prevalent. Men and women did not differ in the likelihood of violating the code or being a target of such violations. Conclusion:Our results identify problems in conduct codes in defining consent and sexual misconduct, and raise serious doubts about the efficacy of such conduct codes in influencing behavior or protecting students. We present potential solutions based on our results and information from conduct codes of other institutions.

Purpose This paper aims to avail a soft approach to embracing the process of creating a business code of conduct and ethics and make it work for a pharmaceutical company [player] which wants to remain relevant before stakeholders and society, amidst escalating inducements to go against the acceptable pharmaceutical behaviour. Design/methodology/approach Data collection was guided by qualitative methodologies. A four stepwise process was followed: data collection at the case company – Kampala Pharmaceutical Industries (KPI), Uganda; validation of data collected at KPI; data collection from external stakeholders of KPI; and re-validation of KPI data based on data collected from external stakeholders. In all this, combination of semi-structured and informal interviews with CEOs, senior staff managers, non-participant observation of ethical related activities plus organizing a stakeholder engagement workshop on business code of conduct and ethics was achieved. This workshop helped document what ought to be an ideal design process to secure stakeholder buy-in of the code of business ethics. A local pharmaceutical company in Uganda, KPI was used, which, for continuous five years since its adoption of the business code of conduct and ethics, registered commercial viability without any record of unethical practices. Triangulation was used to ensure credibility and validity of the results. For data analysis, a three-stepwise process was followed, which helped develop a framework within which the collected data revealed themes which were later analyzed. For generalization of the findings, the “adaptive theory approach” was used. Findings When poorly introduced in an organization, the business code of conduct and ethics can work against the company simply because it will be received with “intentional rebellion” from stakeholders, notably staff. However, when a soft stakeholder engagement and consultative approach is used and followed during the business code of ethics and conduct’s design process, multiple stakeholders feel proud and are much willing to live by the promise spelt out in it. Cited notable benefits of living by the code include reputational enhancement, strategic competitiveness and increased possibilities of wining cross-border cooperation among like-minded pharmaceutical players. In the efforts to reap from the code of ethics, communication was observed as an indispensable activity. Refresher trainings to remind the stakeholders about the promises in the code are also needed as time passes by, otherwise they forget. Needless to say, rewarding those who live an exemplary life in embracing and living by the code was cited as key in sustaining the ethical agenda. Lastly, managing multiple stakeholders influences is a curvilinear fashion and involves back and forth consultations. Practical implications The lessons learnt from KPI can be borrowed and used by both global pharmaceutical players and national/local players, especially those that face challenges living by the promise of their existing codes or those without business code of conduct and ethics. That is, both players can use the suggested process to help participants in their medicine supply chain to come up with working business codes of conduct, as well as guide the stakeholder consultative process which results in stakeholder buy-in. Originality/value For many years, issues surrounding bioethics have dominated priorities of World Health Organization (WHO), UNESCO and many international and national development allies. However, there is an escalating violation of medical codes of conduct and ethics. Hence, this publication is a step toward the implementation of the principles and objectives of the UNESCO Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights which is currently challenged with a difficult question posed by life sciences – How far can we go given the dented medical relationship between ethics, medical science and freedom?

The safety, performance, and sustainability of buildings are crucial, especially in seismically active regions. This study evaluates the seismic performance of a four-story office building designed under Indonesian seismic codes from 2002, 2012, and 2019. Using finite element modeling, the analysis incorporates variations in site classes to assess the structural and seismic response systematically. The results demonstrate significant differences in structural response across the three seismic codes and site classes. Buildings designed under the 2002 code exhibit higher seismic vulnerability than those designed using the 2012 and 2019 codes, particularly regarding story drift and base reactions. These findings highlight the progressive improvement in seismic safety achieved through code updates and the critical role of site-specific considerations in structural performance. Furthermore, the study underscores the importance of adopting modern seismic standards in supporting sustainable infrastructure development. By reducing reconstruction needs, optimizing material use, and improving long-term resilience, these standards contribute to safer and more sustainable urban environments. This research offers valuable insights for engineers and policymakers, emphasizing the importance of seismic code evolution in ensuring resilience and sustainability in earthquake-prone regions.

In Brazil, neoplastic diseases resulted in more than 229,000 deaths in 2020, with 704,000 new cases expected between 2023 and 2025. Factors such as smoking, stress and genetic predisposition influence oncogenesis. Oncology interventions face challenges such as therapeutic resistance and tumor heterogeneity. Around 75% of the human genome is made up of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), with a focus on long ncRNAs. Previously considered 'evolutionary junk', lncRNAs regulate genes and affect cancer. Nuclear lncRNAs impact chromatin architecture, transcription and RNA processing. They function via complex pathways, modulating oncogenes and affecting resistance to treatment. Several lncRNAs, including MALAT1, ANRIL, HOTAIR, GAS5, MEG3 and H19, modulate oncogenic pathways and influence cellular processes and treatment resistance. Although promising as biomarkers, the structural complexity of lncRNAs hinders their clinical application.

Recent literature on the QR code payment system has called for further research on the adoption of QR codes as a payment tool among digital natives. In response to this call, this study investigates the influence of perceived value on digital natives' attitudes and trust in fostering their intention to adopt QR code payments through the integration of prospect theory and perceived value theory. Following a purposive sampling technique, a quantitative approach was employed and PLS-SEM was performed to evaluate the study hypotheses. A structured questionnaire was used to collect survey data from 387 digital natives. Findings showed that digital natives' behavioural intention to adopt QR code payments was positively influenced by perceived value and trust but not by attitude. Furthermore, the findings demonstrated that attitude and trust serially mediated the relationship between digital natives' perception of value and their propensity to accept QR code payments. Nevertheless, this study also highlighted the moderating effects of technology readiness and innovation resistance and showed how they strengthen and weaken the relationships amongst perceived value, attitude, trust, and behavioural intention. The study offers valuable insights for marketing managers and policy makers in understanding digital natives' perceptions towards adopting QR codes with regard to making payments and advances the theoretical depth by contributing to the literature related to the adoption of QR codes while making payments.

PurposeBased on a decolonial perspective from Latin America, this paper aims to offer a different history of the creation of Brazil’s Consumer Defense Code (CDC), analyzing the process through which Eurocentric influences, especially coming from Consumers International (CI), became present in the development of the code.Design/methodology/approachA qualitative historical research was developed using marketing amnesia and decolonialism as its theoretical backdrop. Primary and secondary data are used as source of information. Primary data were obtained through interviews with two authors of the CDC. Secondary data were collected from academic articles and books, reports, magazines and consumer organization websites, as well as journalistic articles.FindingsDuring the drafting of the CDC and after its promulgation, the presence of Eurocentric forces was constant, given the interests of CI and other agents in influencing Brazil’s consumer practices, subordinating them to those of the Global North. This Eurocentric presence was accepted by the Brazilian jurists that drafted the CDC, which led to the incorporation of both laws and bills from Eurocentric countries and the United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection into the code.Originality/valueSuch discussions are scarce in marketing, due to the area’s amnestic state regarding the past. While selectively forgetting certain pasts, marketing fails to both acknowledge its tendency to subordinate consumerist actions to those accepted by the Eurocentric world, and to establish analyses that deal with mimetic processes, to minimize asymmetries between companies and consumers, especially in emerging economies, and, even more, dichotomies between the Global North and the Global South.

A new form of mobile payment, Quick Response (QR) code, has been a popular way of paying bus fares in China since 2017. Compared with conventional payment methods, cash or IC card, QR code shows a lot of differences in response time, recognition accuracy, and payment procedure, which significantly influences the boarding service time (BST) for passengers. However, no research has considered its efficiency. This study, therefore, tries to fill this gap and investigate its influence on BST. Sufficient ride-check data were collected, and the influence of the QR code payment method on BST was examined through a set of regression models. Passengers pay the bus fare with different payment methods as their first choice; nevertheless, when the payment fails, they may transfer among them. According to the payment choice, result, and process, we introduce the first-choice-based, the last-choice-based, and the choice-transfer-based models, respectively. The scenario with delays in calling out the QR code was considered in the choice-transfer-based model. The onboard crowdedness was regarded as a categorical variable to determine the regime of the boarding process in all models. We conduct empirical analysis in Wuhan, and this study can help to identify the influence of the QR code payment method on BST, consequently, improving bus service efficiency.

AbstractIncreasingly within industries voluntary codes (standards) are being developed and subsequently used by firms to address social and environmental issues. On any particular issue multiple competing codes may be available for adoption by firms. Given a choice of codes, which ones will firms adopt? Building on existing institutional and economic research pertaining to voluntary codes this paper proposes a theoretical model as to why some codes are perceived as legitimate by firms and hence are widely adopted while others are not. This model proposes that, in addition to the role of the code's content, the characteristics of the adopting firm, and environmental factors, the origins of a voluntary code, including the characteristics of the developer creating it, the development process, and the opportunity for firms to engage in formalized ‘normative conversations’ regarding the code subsequent to its adoption, will influence whether potential firm adopters perceive the code as legitimating and hence decide to adopt it. Rather than code adoption simply reflecting institutional mimicry or a rational transaction by adopting firms this model suggests that both the creation and the maintenance processes surrounding codes play important roles in the perceptions of legitimacy and subsequent adoption of codes by firms.

Abstract During the operation of information transmission systems errors occur in the transmitted data due to the influence of various negative factors. To correct errors the codes are currently used that can withstand both single and multiple errors. From the point of view of the ability to correct multiple errors, concatenated codes are highly efficient. When constructing a sequential concatenated code, coding is carried out first by the external, then by the internal code. A significant disadvantage of such coding is a significant increase in redundancy. It is proposed to regulate redundancy by encoding with the internal code only a certain part of the bits from the output of the external code encoder. The study showed the effectiveness of this method, which made it possible to change the parameters of the cascade code within a wide range. A method was proposed and tested to increase the corrective ability of selective coding by multiplying symbols decoded by an external code by coefficients that are different for symbols that have and have not been encoded by an internal code. Decoding of the external code was carried out according to the Viterbi algorithm. The performance of the proposed method has been confirmed experimentally.

Streszczenie:
This work applies decision tree analysis to construct a classification sensor for Taiwan’s diagnosis related groups (Tw-DRGs) of medical specialties. Inpatient expenses of 2009 in a national health insurance database were transformed to the SQL database analytic software for analysis and classification. DRG code is selected by the principal diagnosis code with the operating room procedures code. Selecting the combinations in accordance with National Health Insurance inpatient diagnostic related groups TW-DRG Classification Manual, resulting in repeated DRG codes. The study analyzes three medical classifications of Tw-DRGs implementations on 2009 to solve the DRG code appropriate attribution issues. Appropriateness and accuracy of the DRG code is an important influence to the medical payments. The results found that decision tree can effectively and quickly establish the DRG classification process.

Streszczenie:
Conventional approach to perform error-correcting decoding in channels with memory is an adoption of interleaving, which increases the receiver complexity and delay. In order to avoid these limitations, approaches for adapting an error-correcting scheme for memory channels may be used. One approach is to use error-correcting codes with modified design and decoding procedure, taking into account the presence of error bursts in the channel. Another approach to adapting the coding scheme for burst error correction is to use product codes with iterative decoding algorithms. Component codes of product codes themselves may not be able to correct error bursts, but a two-dimensional structure of product codes operating as an artificial interleaver and iterative decoding allow for correction of grouping errors. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to analyze the methods of error-correcting code adaptation to burst error correction in channels with memory in order to reduce the probability of error. Results: The study considered methods of error-correcting code scheme adaptation for low-density parity-check codes, polar codes, and product codes for burst error correction in Gilbert-Elliott channel (GE) and correlated Rayleigh fading channel with different correlation coefficients. Degree distribution of low-density parity-check code was optimized for GE channel. The influence of selected parameters of product code component codes on burst error correction in the GE channel was analyzed. The structure of the polar code has been optimized using a genetic algorithm for the correlated Rayleigh channel, which outperforms the 5G polar code design in terms of error probability. Discussion: Existing error-correcting code schemes do not provide theoretically possible limits, so the question remains of developing coding and decoding schemes capable of reaching theoretical limits.

Code blue is one of the emergency procedure codes that must be activated immediately if someone is found in a condition of cardiac respiratory arrest in the hospital area. code blue response team or code blue team is a team formed by the hospital in charge of responding to the condition of the code blue in the hospital area. This study aims to determine the correlation of HR, Facilities, Response time, and SPO factors with code blue management in the hospital. This research is a quantitative research with descriptive analysis method with factor design test, a sample of 33 code blue teams. The results showed that there was a correlation and influence of factors (sub-variables) of human resources, facilities, response time and standard operating procedures with code blue governance in hospitals. The strength of the factors in the management of code blue in hospitals in a sequence is the facility then continued with the response time factor, human resources and finally the standard operational procedure factors for the code blue team's management in emergency patients.

Streszczenie:
Most seismic codes specify empirical formulas to obtain the fundamental period of buildings. The equations specified in present IS codes, are according to the available data on the time period of buildings measured from their recorded accelerograms. Shear-wall dominant reinforced concrete buildings, constructed, using codes specification are commonly built in different countries, facing a substantial seismic risk, in spite of their high resistance against ground motions. Current seismic code provisions including the Uniform Building Code (International Conference of Building Officials, Whittier, CA, 1997) and the Indian Seismic Code (Criteria for earthquake resistant design of buildings, fifth revision, 2002) are considered to evaluate the effect of time period on seismic behavior of building. In this study, time period obtained by code formulas are compared with those obtained by modal analysis in SAP2000. Also the top story displacement (as an adequate parameter of determination the seismic performance of building) correspond to the values of mentioned time period are estimated using uniform building code and software respectively. It is observed that current empirical equation for calculating the time period of RCC buildings is rather inaccurate. Also it is shown that the time period has very effective influence on seismic performance of building.
