This paper explored the role of cohousing model in the UK and discussed the benefits and limitations of cohousing model by exploring cohousing residents’ motivation and daily living. Through case studies in the UK, semi-structured interviews were carried out to establish the environmental and social sustainability in cohousing and understand residents thinking and behaviour. This study found that cohousing can benefit various age groups, and promote residents’ thinking and behaviour change towards sustainable living. The study also found that the financial limitation and new members recruitment are the top two difficulties in cohousing development. The findings of this research will establish a better understanding of UK cohousing and highlight the potentials and possibilities of cohousing communities.

Streszczenie:
Older people’s cohousing enables individuals to share spaces, resources, activities, and knowledge to expand their capability to act in society. Despite the diverse social, economic, and ethical aims that inform the creation of every cohousing community, there is often a disconnect between the social discourse developed by cohousing groups and the architectural spaces they create. This is a consequence of the building development process in cohousing, in which groups of older people are tasked with making decisions with considerable spatial implications prior to any collaboration with an architect. The concept of “spatial agency” offers an alternative model for the creation of cohousing, in which the expansion of architectural practice beyond aesthetic and technical building design enables social and spatial considerations to be explored contemporaneously. This study uses a two-year design-research collaboration with a cohousing group in Manchester, UK, to test the opportunities and constraints posed by a “spatial agency” approach to cohousing. The collaboration demonstrated how spatial agency enables both the architect and cohouser to act more creatively through a mutual sharing of knowledge, and, in doing so, tests new opportunities of sharing that are currently outside the cohousing orthodoxy.

A cohousing community is created and managed by its residents. It is a new collaborative housing concept designed to foster meaningful relationships, closer social bonding and energy efficiency concepts. This paper aims to discuss the key principles, priorities and challenges of cohousing design process through interviews with four cohousing project architects and four members of the design group. Semi-structured interviews were carried out i) to understand residents’ thinking and behaviour change through living in the cohousing community, and ii) to establish the environmental and social sustainability in a cohousing setting. The study found that the development procedure of cohousing highly differs from the mainstream housing design. The quality of the design can potentially influence the residents’ daily life. The findings will benefit a range of groups. It will be an important reference for cohousing design standards. Streszczenie:
This paper aims to propose an integrated theoretical model with which to identify the personal characteristics, behaviors, and competencies of individuals who have successfully seen a senior cohousing project through to the residential stability phase. Numerous early-stage senior cohousing projects are registered each year. However, only a few of them are actually built, and when they are, the construction process takes an average of 10 years. Would-be cohousing residents have to put their tenacity and other competencies to the test to overcome the obstacles in their path before their residential complex is completed. The model proposed here analyzes senior cohousing initiatives as entrepreneurial undertakings. To this end, it draws upon a comprehensive review of the literature on entrepreneurship to identify the personal characteristics, behaviors, and competencies typical of entrepreneurs. In this model, participants in senior cohousing projects make use of these entrepreneurial competencies to help them overcome the obstacles to completing their housing development. However, for the would-be cohousing residents, the objective is not simply to build the residential complex but to enjoy the satisfaction and well-being this housing typology offers. Here, too, we find their entrepreneurial competencies can play a role.

This dissertation reports the theoretical, methodological and programmatic route for the architectural proposal of an assisted housing for the elderly, using the guidelines of the Cohousing, located in the central district of the municipality of Eus?bio, metropolitan region of Fortaleza, capital of the State of Cear?. The target audience of the venture are elderly people who reach the third age with health, lucidity and autonomy to carry out the daily activities. The research sought to answer the following question: how an architectural project of an assisted living for the elderly can meet individual and collective needs, adopting guidelines of the Cohousing, seeking an improvement in the quality of life of the residents? The methodological procedures were focused in four phases: 1st: Study of the theoretical and conceptual referential and design constraints, providing the theoretical basis for the research; 2nd: Recognition of the spatial needs of the elderly. This stage sought to get to know the users and to understand their habits and preferences; 3rd: Study of the project references. The study of architectural precedents highlighted the characteristics of projects and buildings with potential to contribute to the development of the architectural proposal of this research; 4th: Preparation of the draft. This stage was characterized by the elaboration of the architectural proposal in which studies of environmental comfort and spatial syntax were carried out with the objective of providing urban and architectural quality. The final project proposal of an assisted living for the elderly includes a private area, related to the condominium, and a public area, available to the community, composed of a square, leisure equipment and commercial stores.

Society is facing a great Sustainability Challenge. The designs of our social and economic structures are creating enormous stress in our social, environmental and economic systems and across the world, citizens, businesses and governments have begun to take notice. Adopting more Sustainable Consumption behaviours have been identified as a necessary step in the move towards sustainability. This thesis explores the idea of Collaborative Consumption within the context of Cohousing in cities. Cohousing is defined as housing comprising of individual apartments or homes with shared spaces and facilities designed to create a community, oriented towards collaboration among residents and collective organisation of services. This research sought to identify key barriers and enablers for moving towards Sustainable Lifestyles and study the role of Cohousing as a catalyst for Collaborative Behaviour that triggers Collaborative Consumption leading urban communities towards Sustainable Lifestyles and ultimately towards Sustainable Development. By combining the Strategic Sustainable Development approach and Cohousing, this thesis provides a set of recommendations that could help Cohousing communities move strategically towards sustainability.

In relation to the contemporary discussion about sustainable housing, this thesis investigates cohousing from a resource use perspective. Cohousing is a type of housing is based on the idea of sharing space and domestic work, while still having the privacy that a private apartment gives. The sharing of meals, space and things that is common in cohouses is often believed to save resources, and this thesis makes use of a case study in the cohouse Färdknäppen in Stockholm. To evaluate the resource use, system analysis has been used. System analysis is commonly used to analyze the environmental impact from goods or services, but not so commonly on housing in the way this study uses it. More exactly, the system analysis studied the resources used to provide housing for one person during one year, which included shelter, but also other things normally associated with a home such as meals. Results showed that the sharing of meals does not result in less consumption of food, and that sharing of things saves resources to a relatively small extent. Still, by living in Färdknäppen, a person can save as much a ton of greenhouse gas-emission per year compared to the average. This substantial save mainly comes from less use of both heating- and electric energy, which in turn results from the way the cohouse is working. The communal cooking is believed to save electricity and the sharing of space allows resident to live with less floor space in total which saves energy for heating and electricity. There is also a potential to further lower resource use by changing the diet and to live with even less floor space that could be utilized in a cohouse, as well as in conventional homes.

Our conceptualization of space does not reduce it to qualities of an external environment but views it as a relational arrangement of people and features that are crucial for understanding transitions across the life course instead. Drawing from two empirical studies anchored in dispositive analysis and environmental psychology, we examine (a) transitions to children’s independent mobility, and (b) transitions into multigenerational cohousing. We ask: How can spatial sensitivity shape, challenge and enrich research on transitions in childhood and later life?
