This dissertation reports the theoretical, methodological and programmatic route for the architectural proposal of an assisted housing for the elderly, using the guidelines of the Cohousing, located in the central district of the municipality of Eus?bio, metropolitan region of Fortaleza, capital of the State of Cear?. The target audience of the venture are elderly people who reach the third age with health, lucidity and autonomy to carry out the daily activities. The research sought to answer the following question: how an architectural project of an assisted living for the elderly can meet individual and collective needs, adopting guidelines of the Cohousing, seeking an improvement in the quality of life of the residents? The methodological procedures were focused in four phases: 1st: Study of the theoretical and conceptual referential and design constraints, providing the theoretical basis for the research; 2nd: Recognition of the spatial needs of the elderly. This stage sought to get to know the users and to understand their habits and preferences; 3rd: Study of the project references. The study of architectural precedents highlighted the characteristics of projects and buildings with potential to contribute to the development of the architectural proposal of this research; 4th: Preparation of the draft. This stage was characterized by the elaboration of the architectural proposal in which studies of environmental comfort and spatial syntax were carried out with the objective of providing urban and architectural quality. The final project proposal of an assisted living for the elderly includes a private area, related to the condominium, and a public area, available to the community, composed of a square, leisure equipment and commercial stores.

Society is facing a great Sustainability Challenge. The designs of our social and economic structures are creating enormous stress in our social, environmental and economic systems and across the world, citizens, businesses and governments have begun to take notice. Adopting more Sustainable Consumption behaviours have been identified as a necessary step in the move towards sustainability. This thesis explores the idea of Collaborative Consumption within the context of Cohousing in cities. Cohousing is defined as housing comprising of individual apartments or homes with shared spaces and facilities designed to create a community, oriented towards collaboration among residents and collective organisation of services. This research sought to identify key barriers and enablers for moving towards Sustainable Lifestyles and study the role of Cohousing as a catalyst for Collaborative Behaviour that triggers Collaborative Consumption leading urban communities towards Sustainable Lifestyles and ultimately towards Sustainable Development. By combining the Strategic Sustainable Development approach and Cohousing, this thesis provides a set of recommendations that could help Cohousing communities move strategically towards sustainability.

In relation to the contemporary discussion about sustainable housing, this thesis investigates cohousing from a resource use perspective. Cohousing is a type of housing is based on the idea of sharing space and domestic work, while still having the privacy that a private apartment gives. The sharing of meals, space and things that is common in cohouses is often believed to save resources, and this thesis makes use of a case study in the cohouse Färdknäppen in Stockholm. To evaluate the resource use, system analysis has been used. System analysis is commonly used to analyze the environmental impact from goods or services, but not so commonly on housing in the way this study uses it. More exactly, the system analysis studied the resources used to provide housing for one person during one year, which included shelter, but also other things normally associated with a home such as meals. Results showed that the sharing of meals does not result in less consumption of food, and that sharing of things saves resources to a relatively small extent. Still, by living in Färdknäppen, a person can save as much a ton of greenhouse gas-emission per year compared to the average. This substantial save mainly comes from less use of both heating- and electric energy, which in turn results from the way the cohouse is working. The communal cooking is believed to save electricity and the sharing of space allows resident to live with less floor space in total which saves energy for heating and electricity. There is also a potential to further lower resource use by changing the diet and to live with even less floor space that could be utilized in a cohouse, as well as in conventional homes.

When the harbour settlement of Holmsund emerged the paternalistic milling society solely built itself around one cause, this generated a closed community consisting of a very uniform population. The impact is still present to the current day, homogenisation is causing individualisation and power is expressed by means of tangible possessions. Holmsunds’ door is closed, this BA proposal wish to unlock the door and leave it open. In order to accomplish the previously stated the strategic site of intervention is where one is the most responsive, where the daily life happens, where one lives. Modernity and digitalization generates a society where services are moving from physical spaces in the public to rather taking place within the home, thus putting a greater emphasis on the way we live. Not to mention the amount of time and value we invest in living during our lives, constantly craving to settle, to connect our bodies to one physical space. On that account housing will acts as the architectural engine for societal change and serves as the base for this project. This BA project proposes a housing project where the concept of sharing acts as the key theme. The idea suggests an apartment building which emphasizes the connection with its surroundings by combining public and private functions in a balanced transition and thus generating connections between various people. In more specific terms the building is defined through the means of sharing in various scales by: mixing different users, sharing activities in communal spaces and sharing resources through a reusing facility.

Architecture of Havířov is uniform and it was strongly influenced by Socialist realism. Town is located on the plane, surrounded by water tanks and White Carpathian Mountains. There are the cleanest air conditions from the whole surrounding area. The aim of the project was to find new idea and remedy the shortcomings of the city. The project addresses the issue of absence of typical picturesque square with stores in the city centre. Part of the objective is also dealing with the issue of rapidly aging city with a lot of inhabitants. This problem is based on the fact that in the 50s of the 20th century generation of young people at the same age were coming to Havířov due to possibility of work in the mines and ironworks.

The sizes of both single-family and multifamily homes have grown steadily in the United States over the last fifty years. During this time, despite more efficient production processes, energy consumption in the country also rose. The many concerns associated with increased energy consumption include hastening depletion of fossil fuel resources, increased dependence on foreign resources for fuel, environmental concerns related to fossil fuel emissions, and ensuring all people have access to economic energy sources. Awareness of the necessity to engage in more sustainable practices (environmentally, economically, and socially) has existed at least since the 1960s. The United Nations formalized these concerns in the 1987 publication, "Our Common Future" in which they defined and popularized the term "sustainable development." Despite this awareness and the continuing efforts of governmental and non-governmental agencies to reduce the impact of energy consumption, the rate of consumption has continued to rise and the rate of growth of energy consumption has only seen marginal improvements in the United States (and has risen dramatically in some developing countries such as China and India).
(cont.) One way to reduce the rate of consumption or slow the rate of growth is to reduce the impact of the United States housing market through demand management techniques and energy efficient construction. Cohousing offers one opportunity to accomplish that goal. This thesis outlines the background information related to U.S. energy consumption and housing trends, the relative impact of energy consumption in cohousing, and the challenges of implementing cohousing on a large enough scale to make an impact in nation-wide consumption trends.

This work addresses my hopes and concerns about what a community could be. Somerville housing is made up largely of rental properties. As in any rental housing endeavor the occupants consider themselves lucky if the monthly rent is reasonable and the property is well cared for. They arc considered extremely lucky if their neighbors arc amiable and they arc able to establish a community of friends in the neighborhood. Currently there is little one can do to control rent or improve the prospects of becoming a homeowner, let alone location of friends or the coalescing of a community. In the past ten to fifteen years the word "cohousing" has been used to describe a strategy that attempts to redress the problems of rising housing costs, work vs. family time, and community isolation. This idea although it has gained strength in Denmark is by no means new. Old models such as the Kibbutz aDd Pueblo Indian dwellings have long made use of the collective eHorts of the community to liberate the time and energy of the individual. The challenge for cohousing in the United States is to address longstanding cultural and societal expectations of the autonomous single-family home. Although many people may yearn for the familiarity that a strong community or neighborhood brings this should in no way challenge the privacy of the home. Melding this idea of autonomy with the making of a community is at once paradoxical yet at the very center of what cohousing could be in the United States. This thesis is an exploration of what a cohousing/cooperative living community could be in an urban environment. I &m also attempting to define the role of an autonomous housing type in a communal setting, and in doing this redress the expectations of owning a single-family home. This notion of autonomy also extends to the layers between a communal entity and the surrounding neighborhood.

Streszczenie:
Population ageing and urbanisation are two of the defining social changes of the 21st century, but many older people experience a loss of agency within society. Cohousing presents a potential medium for older citizens to increase their agency, but this is limited by the current conception of the architect-cohouser relationship. Spatial Agency provides an alternative approach to architectural practice in cohousing, based on the inclusion of citizens in architectural processes. This thesis investigates the limitations and opportunities of using spatial agency as the basis of the architect’s role in older people’s cohousing across two parts; a theoretical expansion of spatial agency in relation to existing examples of cohousing, and a practical testing of this expanded approach through a live collaboration. The first part of the thesis develops a hybrid theoretical framework for spatial agency that marries Bourdieu’s theories of ‘habitus’ and ‘field’ with Giddens’ concept of ‘structuration’. This interprets agency as the capability to act creatively, produced by conceiving design as a mutually enabling discourse. The second part of the thesis tests this expanded interpretation of spatial agency through a two-year design-research collaboration with Manchester Urban Cohousing (MUCH), an older people’s cohousing group. This identifies barriers to spatial agency in cohousing and proposes how they may be overcome. This is achieved through practices that develop a spatial discourse between architect and cohouser, empowering all parties to act creatively through the exposure to ideas and knowledge that is otherwise unavailable to them. This enables the architect and cohouser to negotiate and realise their social, political and ethical vision through creative action.

ABSTRACT: The recent appearance of several communal sharing systems has had a transversal effect throughout Western societies, and Architecture is no strange to this phenomenon. Movement such as Cohousing, Coworking and Cosdesigning, have been captivating individuals, and gaining notoriety across modern cities. In Lisbon, there is a multitude of Coworking spaces, Lx Factory being its prime example, as well as initiatives such as BIP/ZIP program. However, these movements have not yet been absorbed by academia. By studying the evolution of post-industrial societies, a palpable interest for communities has been unravelled, coupled with new ways in which such awareness is manifested. In parallel, a study of communities was conducted, and its consequences or the urban lifestyle were surveyed. The study of a variety of historic examples of communitarian habitation, as tests to determine the existence of Cohousing, Coworking and Codesigning, has allowed for a better framing of such concepts in the actual context. An in-depth study of each of these concepts has revealed its potential in recovering urban experiences on a local scale, aiding in the refurbishing of public spaces, as well as in the reconciliation between portions of the consolidated city and modern society. Finally, based on the aforesaid, it is presented a projection of possible application of the Co-housing and Coworking concepts in Graça, Lisbon. Thus, it is shown that it is possible to update and upgrade old urban structures – such as the Vilas Operárias – to modern and current lifestyles, whilst maintaining and safeguarding not only the structures but also the urban neighbourhood way of life.

Streszczenie:
One of the fastest growing types of intentional community; cohousing aims to provide an enhanced sense of community, while also retaining the possibility for privacy among its residents. Research has shown that cohousing communities have the capacity to foster social and environmental sustainability. Therefore, increasing attention is being given to cohousing options as solutions for multi-generational community living, or for ‘stay-at-home’ choices for older people. Nonetheless, the body of literature on cohousing remains scarce, especially in terms of primary studies investigating the factors affecting its success. In view of these considerations, this study sets out to determine important factors that influence the long-term success of cohousing communities. Social capital and environment-behaviour theories are used as a frame of reference; whereas in-depth interviews with 46 cohousing residents from 16 different cohousing communities (across four North-West European countries: Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and the UK) form the main body of data. In three of these countries, cohousing has a long history, and it is well-established. Desk research, spatial analysis of the physical design, and participant observation supplement the accounts of interviewees. The findings reveal 16 important factors that influence the long-term success of cohousing. These factors can be categorized under four ‘grand’ themes: motivation; development process; physical design; and environmental sustainability.

The CoHousing movement was formed in Denmark in the late 1960's, and has since become established in Scandinavia, central Europe, Australia, and North America. Through collective development and management of pedestrian-oriented housing with shared facilities that supplement individual dwellings, CoHousing fosters the sense of community lacking in other housing options. This increased contact and interaction with neighbors is seen to be particularly beneficial to two of the fastest growing household types--single parents and the elderly. CoHousing units are typically not affordable to a large proportion of these and other groups, however, and thus have tended to be an option primarily reserved for double-income professional households.
This paper explores the potential for reducing unit prices in the United States and Canada by identifying and examining five key stages of the CoHousing development process: group formation; development structure; site selection; financing and ownership; and planning, design, and construction. Research was guided by: visits to eight of the thirteen completed CoHousing projects in Canada and the United States; guided interviews with CoHousing developers, architects, builders, and residents; examination of financial proforma and construction drawings; and comparison of CoHousing development procedures with conventional affordable housing development procedures.
Results of the study show that while cost-saving strategies in general are more frequently employed than initially anticipated, many are often under-utilized or ineffectively employed. Foremost among the strategies which are infrequently or ineffectively employed are: hiring professional consultants from within the group; selecting sites targeted for redevelopment subsidies; utilizing infill housing strategies; increasing the degree of unit standardization; and increased use of sweat equity in the development of common facilities. The extent to which the measurement of a strategy's effectiveness can be transferred (from one project to another) is limited by the unique location, size, development history, and small number of completed projects.

This thesis examines the relationship between a cohousing community and a related ministry center in a mid-Atlantic state that seek to encourage an environment for people—with and without disabilities—to live together while fostering the individuality and autonomy among members of both groups. This thesis explores how these two organizations attempt to create space for individuals with disabilities to exercise personal agency and independence, as well as encourage mutual relationship building between persons with and without disabilities. The implications of their partnership were the central focus of this inquiry. The analysis investigates how the physical structures, locations, and accessibility of formal and informal spaces for people with and without disabilities residing in the cohousing community create opportunities for their visibility and exercise of agency. It also outlines the structure and aims of the nonprofit that collaborates with the cohousing community, as those relate to agential possibility, including the role of personal development through a faith-based identity. Overall, the thesis employs Iris Marion Young's framework for inclusive democracy to explore the effects of the combined efforts of these two entities for the perceived agency and autonomy of a sample of residents with disabilities participating in both (Young 1990, 2000). In particular, this analysis explores the central tenets of the two nonprofits' organizational cultures as those relate to political agency, by sharing the findings of semi-structured interviews with residents, staff, and board members about their experiences as a part of each institution. The analysis also details the primary features of the physical environments each FBO has created and their implications for the perceived agency of a sample of those residents with disabilities involved with both nonprofit organizations. It offers insight into the importance of identity, equal inclusivity, and opportunities for expression in formal and informal settings for the encouragement of agential possibility. The results of this study indicate that the relationship between the nonprofit and cohousing community has allowed individuals with and without disabilities the opportunity to take ownership of their friendships and relationships, including their relationship with God. This suggests that the role of faith in this community provides individuals with disabilities a chance to express agency over their personal faith life as well as their goals and ambitions. Individuals without disabilities in this community encourage this personal agency because of their own definition of personhood as understood through Christian faith. This inquiry was based on 12 semi-structured interviews with staff, governing board members and participants involved with each entity investigated as well as review of their websites and relevant documents concerning their visions, missions and goals.

Widespread concern over recent changes in American civic life has spawned arguments in a range of disciplines about the importance of social capital, citizen civic capacity and deliberative democratic engagement in supporting the development of engaged citizens, as well as supporting a democracy that is effective, publicly-minded and accountable. This study contributes to this literature by empirically investigating the potential for a specific type of place-based community development called â cohousingâ to enhance the quantity and quality of resident civic engagement. Cohousing neighborhoods marry elements of social contact design with democratic self-governance and intentional social practices designed to build trust and cohesion among neighbors. In addition to investigating civic engagement in cohousing, this study investigates the degree to which U.S. cohousing neighborhoods build social capital, develop residentsâ democratic capacities and provide a platform for deliberative democratic practice. The results of the study indicate extraordinarily high levels of civic engagement by U.S. cohousing residents as compared to both the general population and to individuals with similar educational, income and racial characteristics. A multiple-case analysis of three neighborhoods, selected for positive deviance in civic engagement levels, were found to possess high levels of trust, social cohesion and norms of reciprocity. Case community residents were also found to be developing a range of democratic capacities, individually and collectively, particularly through engagement in community self-governance via structures of distributed leadership and the use of consensus-based, community decision-making processes. This study suggests that self-governing, communities of place, such as cohousing neighborhoods may represent a promising new avenue for enhanced citizen-engagement at the grassroots-community level. These neighborhoods also represent an excellent arena for future investigation into conditions, necessary and sufficient, to catalyze increased democratic capacity and civic engagement on the part of citizens.

The 2008 economic and financial crisis has deeply affected the global economy, causing the collapse of the building market and particularly the propriety housing; besides, the new demographic organisation has defined its type of user, which we are going to take into account. Information and Communication Technologies ICT are basic to define the innovative government of a country, influencing both buildings, the urban landscape and bettering the relationship among users. The several meanings releted to Smart City embody all the possibilities to create a new environment. With Open Government we mean a new philosophy of life that is at the same time a practice of dealing with data that can be shared by users freely because they have lost any sensitive information. Untill a recent past, these data where stored in the archives of the Public Administration, now the user can get and reuse them freely in a new perspective and with a different aim. The topic of this reaserch project is to identify a scientific methodolgy to choose, arrange and use these Open Data. This will help to better manage a geographical and urban area according to specific requests, for example the creation and the spreading of co-housing, a model of accomodation, particularly suitable in some contexts. Phdcohousing.idra.it is a web site that shows the appliance of this process, referring also to users and their new needs of housing. Actually this practice could be quite useful also for the Public Administrations, agencies, architects and builders that will save time and money and will meet the needs of the users more effectively.

The implementation of a method for the conduct of cohousing operations is the subject of this study. Our partner is social housing company that is a property developer and a rental manager. One of his objectives is to develop a new offer: cohousing. The objective is to involve the future occupants in the design process of their residence in order to guarantee their satisfaction. This approach has many similarities with participatory design methods that have demonstrated their benefits for the quality of the manufactured products as well as for the user satisfaction. In the French Housing sector, cohousing operations are uncommon and generally carried out by residents who want to avoid property developers.Several arguments explain this gap between the two sectors. Unlike manufactured products, the constructed object is unique. The design of a building must adapt to local specificities and its production environment, the construction site, is under uncertainty. Moreover, on public projects, the law orders the separation between owners, designers and builders. This constitutes an obstacle to the sharing of good practices and strengthen coordination mechanisms based on informal communication. Construction operations are therefore considered non-repeatable. A second argument that explains the low number of cohousing projects lies in the cultural specificities of the sector. Occupant satisfaction is rarely measured and the gap in terms of knowledge and communication with professionals is huge. Unlike manufacturing industry, the formalization of a participatory process is in contradiction with the practices of a sector where projects are not repeatable and therefore not very formalized. We then demonstrate the importance of formalizing the participatory process that must be carried out, and then alert the consequences of the involvement of the inhabitants. We are interested in the phenomenon of resistance to organizational change. In our context, the management of organizational change seems to constitute a pertinent answer to this phenomenon. The objective of this doctoral thesis is therefore to define and then test a methodology for Cohousing projects. First, we propose a process modelling by defining the roles of each stakeholder on the different stages of a real estate operation. We explain the level and the topics of participation to obtain the satisfaction of the future occupants. In order to analyze the implementation of our recommendations, we develop a model for the formalization of the cohousing process integrating the using constraints of the professionals. Secondly, we are building a process of organizational change management in order to prevent the difficulties caused by an upheaval in the conventions shared between professionals. Our proposal is tested on two successive cohousing operations. On the basis of participant observation, interviews and questionnaires, we highlight the positive impact of participatory design on satisfaction. In a second step, we compare the accompanying steps with the change implemented and their effects on the two operations. We find that the better the change management is conducted the less the incidents on collaboration or communication issues are significant. Consequently, we confirm the relevance of a cohousing project management methodology that combines the involvement of the inhabitants in a participative design process and the organizational change management

Streszczenie:
The population of Earth is increasing vastly fast which has a great impact on all the large cities around the world. The society of today is facing new problems each day and the housing sector is one of them, due to the unbalanced situation of demand and supply. During the same time, the term of sharing economy has established its ground in people’s lives as they have realized the benefits of using instead of possessing when it comes to products and services. Sweden is one of all the markets with both this increasing housing problem and increasing trend of sharing economy. The old, but today rising housing form of shared accommodation has been identified by some entrepreneurs as a possible solution for this unbalanced situation. However, sharing accommodation, or rather coliving is an emerging term that has spread widely through the world’s housing market the last years and can be seen in many different configurations depending on its location and purpose. This study aims to establish an understanding of what coliving is in terms of different key aspects in today’s society in order to formulate a conceptual definition of the emerging term. This has been done by an inductive approach of a qualitative method based on an interview study and previous literature. The empirical findings indicate that coliving relates to five key dimensions, eight key themes and one key sub theme. These aspects need to be related and taken into account during the development process of a coliving project. The identified aspects and the formulated conceptual definition bridge the academic gap as they build up the foundation of what coliving is in today’s society. Hence, contributes with valuable information for the topics of sustainability, ethics and urban development.

The ecological footprint of the average Canadian is three times greater than the global per capita biocapacity of the planet. The purpose of this research is to gain insights from intentional communities on how to reduce household ecological footprints in Canada. Intentional community is an inclusive term for a variety of community types, including ecovillages and cohousing, where residents have come together to achieve a common purpose. Studies show that intentional communities have per capita ecological footprints that are less than those of conventional communities. I corroborate these findings through my own ecological footprint analyses of Quayside Village and OUR Ecovillage, in southwestern British Columbia. These communities have per capita ecological footprints that are smaller than some conventional averages. Overall, Quayside Village and OUR Ecovillage also have comparatively similar per capita ecological footprints, suggesting that residents of both urban and rural intentional communities may demonstrate similar environmental behaviours. Intentional community living is currently confined to small‐scale grassroots initiatives so even the aggregate environmental benefits are insignificant. Municipalities and land developers can help to advance the pro‐environmental practices of intentional communities by increasing incentives for this community model and adapting intentional community practices to a conventional context.

This research is aimed at defi ning some guidelines for the Social Sustainability of the “Social Housing Project” as a useful operative instrument for supporting the defi nition of the meta-project, in view to reduce the risk of housing diffi culties of the “grey area” and to satisfy the housing needs produced in recent years by several socio-demographic changes. Access to a quality and affordable price accommodation is a fundamental need and a key factor for the development of a State. In addition, as indicated by the European Parliament and according to the objectives of the new European Agenda 2020, the dwelling demand is strongly tied to social inclusion. In assessing how the housing project is able to mend the emerged disadvantage conditions, the research is focused on the features of the architectural design able to regain the ancient values and customs, looking for innovation and future prospects which may be considered central for the construction of the social dimension. Therefore, the deeping of these tools (Participatory Design, Self-building / Self-restoration / self-maintenance, Cohousing, functional and social mix) is developed through the critical observation of their application (within 20 case studies) and by refl ecting on the principles that the international scientifi c community, with its various disciplinary contributions, has already shared about them. To prevent the condition of housing exclusion is necessary to solve a set of housing diffi culties such as Economic, Physical, Urban, Social and Legal troubles. Therefore, for each social category within the “grey area”, the present study examines the strengths and weaknesses to be faced through the housing design in order to improve or eliminate such housing problems. This thesis assumes that there isn’t a global, unifi ed model, therefore it is proposed rather as a method of investigation and synthesis of the context. Furthermore, it is opened to interdisciplinary considerations extended to further fi elds. What emerged about the housing hardship conditions of the “gray area”, combined with the opportunities and threats engender by the use of the described designing tools, allow to defi ne the Guidelines for the Social Housing Sustainability related to Social Pillar.

The high prevalence of loneliness, especially among elderly and young adults, calls for measures to connect people and strengthen social support networks. Housing models that bring people together and reduce loneliness are seen as a solution. The theory implies a causal relation in which the building design can stimulate social interaction, contribute to social support, and combat loneliness. This research aims to get an insight in the way different housing models for elderly and young adults can stimulate social support and combat loneliness, by looking at social contact design principles. The research consists of six qualitative case studies spread over Sweden, the Netherlands and Austria. Among the case studies there are two nursery homes, two student accommodations and two co-housing initiatives. The data is collected within a period of five weeks, using the go-along method, in-depth interviews and diaries. The research confirms the causal relation between building design, social interactions and social support. However, it was found that loneliness must be considered separate from this. While housing models cannot combat loneliness, they can stimulate social interactions between residents that help to build a social support network. In addition, the housing situation cannot cause loneliness, but it can reinforce an already existing feeling of loneliness among residents by hindering possibilities for residents to interact and build social support networks. Based on the research findings, two policy recommendations are made. First of all, future housing models should aim to integrate students and elderly within the wider society. Second, future housing models should offer a building design and organizational structure that stimulate social interaction and social support between residents.

Year 2030 there will be up to 500 000 more individuals over the age of 75 comparing to today. Approximately every fourth individual in the age of 75-84 have a reduced mobility. Many of them lives in houses with low availability and adaption to the specific needs of the individual. The low availability contributes to a decreased living situation and it can lead to impaired quality of life. Loneliness is common among elderly and can contribute to increased concern, insecurity and depression. Loneliness is often based on a feeling of missing a social context of participation and community. A form of housing were elderly meet can recreate this feeling of community and belonging which can contribute to increased activity and quality of life for the individual. A accommodation with a higher grade of availability and factors for increased quality gives a possibility for the individual to live longer in their own home. The remained living contributes to increased security for the individual who is allowed to age in a well-known environment. The social costs are expected to decrease if more individuals age in their own homes since the costs of home care are lower than the costs for retirement home for the same individual. The purpose of the report is to present the problems around elderly's housing situation and present improvements. The goal is to present the design of a senior housing with a cohousing alignment which creates communion and security for the residents.

ABSTRACT: This research proposes a reflection on the theme of housing, namely housing in Lisbon. Both the city and its inhabitants have been watching drastic changes at the housing level. It is necessary to combat the problems reflected in the high prices in Lisbon and at the same time find a more coherent and possible way in the speed and alteration of these procedures, as well as in the process of constant evolution of society. It is in this sense that the proposal described intends to respond to the needs of the individual. The house is questioned today and its role in the life of each one. Concepts such as flexibility and adaptability, co-habitation, modularity, hybridity and sustainability are understood. They are thought of houses made for individuals, they are thought of "disposable" houses, houses that are useful in a certain period of time and that can later be rethought, recreated, reaffirmed, adjusted. All this in relation to who inhabits them, one, two, five people, a set, a loner. This project includes the possibility of rethinking housing so that it is an asset today and not an inheritance in future times.

Streszczenie:
The overarching question of this dissertation is in what ways complementary currencies (CC) systems can contribute to environmental sustainability from an institutional and ecological economics perspective. More particularly, the research focuses on household energy consumption, as it is an important target for policy makers in the EU. The first three chapters focus on the emerging trend of using CC systems as top-down instruments for environmental sustainability. Our findings relate to developing a taxonomy of these systems, designing new top-down CC systems adapted to the context of energy savings in the household sector, exploring the influence of these new systems on the quality of motivation in the light of Self-Determination Theory and investigating the acceptability and effectiveness of these systems. In the fourth and last chapter of this dissertation, we approach our research question from a bottom-up angle and, using an inductive methodology, we explore how community currencies could act as an organising instrument capable of helping cohousing communities achieve their energy-efficiency potential. Finally, we conclude by highlighting our contributions regarding the structure and important features of these systems, how they can be used in an ecological economics paradigm, and how they can set rules for collective action in an institutional perspective.

The solved area with an area of approximately 4.2 hectares is the eastern part of the statutory city of Brno. It is located in the city of Brno Líšeň on the border of a row of village character with a small scale (old Líšeň) and loose construction of point, board and typified high-rise houses from the 20th century (new Líšeň). The aim of the project is to find a dialogue between the loose structure of the new Líšeň and the town-building structure of the old one. With its masses it creates clearly defined streets and spaces. At the same time, there is an effort to loosen the mass and to integrate it into the near nature with its form. The idea design is based on the principle of cohousing (community housing), which is designed for living in family houses and apartment buildings. The main idea of the project is to respond to today's individualized and automated time, when construction has ceased to focus on the formation of shared spaces = interpersonal relationships, it increasing anonymity and isolation. Basic social interactions, mutually beneficial relations between neighbors are disappearing. It is also a response to the disintegration of the traditional family and can replace family background. In the architectural form it also solves the issue of uniformity, the loss of human scale in modern construction. The emphasis in the project is on the diversity of types of apartments and on a diverse range of public, semi-public, semi-private and private spaces.

This project is focused on the conversion of the former factory area of OP Prostejov company, which is located in the Eastern part of the city Prostejov, close to the R46 highway. OP Prostejov company bankrupted in the year 2010 and since that year the area has been falling into disrepair. I approach this area in my thesis as new polyfunctional city district, which contains places for sport, relaxing, administration, commercialism, education, culture and living. I focus especially on the living function of this area, which is located in its Eastern part. Nowadays those buildings are being gradually dismantled, most of their parts have been practically taken out but the supporting construction system still remains. The view to those naked objects (bare steel-concrete skeleton) let us to see the energy of the historical development and also the legacy of the industrial past period. That historical view became the basement of my concept. My idea is to create different flats by the combination of separate units and residential containers (see scheme of flats). The flat solutions are done in some variations (from 1+kk to 3+kk). The entrances to the flats are from the external area, with some stairs and their own garden - it means analogically to live in family house, which is the dream of many people.
