Streszczenie:
We consider the implications of the mathematical modeling and analysis of large modular neuron-to-neuron dynamical networks. We explain how the dynamical behavior of relatively small-scale strongly connected networks leads naturally to nonbinary information processing and thus to multiple hypothesis decision-making, even at the very lowest level of the brain’s architecture. In turn we build on these ideas to address some aspects of the hard problem of consciousness. These include how feelings might arise within an architecture with a foundational decision-making and classification layer of unit processors. We discuss how a proposed “dual hierarchy model,” made up from both externally perceived, physical elements of increasing complexity, and internally experienced, mental elements (which we argue are equivalent to feelings), may support aspects of a learning and evolving consciousness. We introduce the idea that a human brain ought to be able to reconjure subjective mental feelings at will, and thus these feelings cannot depend on internal chatter or internal instability-driven activity (patterns). An immediate consequence of this model, grounded in dynamical systems and nonbinary information processing, is that finite human brains must always be learning and forgetting and that any possible subjective internal feeling that might be fully idealized with a countable infinity of facets could never be learned completely a priori by zombies or automata. It may be experienced more and more fully by an evolving human brain (yet never in totality, not even in a lifetime). We argue that, within our model, the mental elements and thus internal modes (feelings) play a role akin to latent variables in processing and decision-making, and thus confer an evolutionary “fast-thinking” advantage.

Social robots are a proposed solution to feelings of loneliness and social isolation. Given the psychological complexity of experienced trait loneliness and its potential to reduce perceived social presence, an experiment using a social robot was conducted to examine how trait loneliness impacted perceived social co-presence, psychobehavioral interdependence, and subjective mutual presence in social robot interactions. Furthermore, we explored whether these effects differed from human-to-human interactions. Although trait loneliness only affected third order subjective copresence among the three social presence dimensions, individuals with higher trait loneliness were more likely to accept the robot as a social companion.

AbstractHuman beings create images of themselves in all cultures and historical periods. They need these images to communicate about themselves and to understand themselves. Images of the human being are designs and projections of the human being. They are formed in order to visualize representations of the human being or individual aspects of a person. These representations are simplifications of human diversity and complexity. Images of the human being are irreducible. They arise because we communicate about ourselves and must develop similarities and feelings of belonging with other people. They are the result of complex anthropological processes in which social and cultural power structures play an important role. Owing to their iconic character, they reduce the complexity of the person and his or her being-in-the-world to select features and do not create a complete view of the person.

This research explores the relationship between human imagination and architecture through the depiction of the Taj Mahal in Sahir Ludhianvi’s Urdu poetry. It examines how the Taj Mahal, beyond its physical structure, represents human sensitivity, emotion, and cultural imagination. The central question focuses on how human feelings, intertwined with imagination, are reflected in Ludhianvi’s portrayal of the iconic monument. Architecture is viewed not merely as a physical creation but as a profound symbol of cultural identity and emotional depth, much like literature evokes feelings through words. The Taj Mahal, often symbolizing love and beauty is explored as a metaphor for deeper human relationships in Ludhianvi’s work. By employing a phenomenological and literary analysis, the research reveals how architecture influences human experiences and imagination. The findings show that the Taj Mahal, in Ludhianvi’s poetry, represents more than its aesthetic grandeur. It becomes a symbol of eternal love and emotional complexity, blending the tangible with the intangible. The study suggests that future research should delve further into how architectural heritage shapes cultural imagination and recommends interdisciplinary approaches that combine architecture, literature, and phenomenology to gain deeper insights into this relationship.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Background Dementia and loneliness are both complex phenomenon’s that impact on both mental and physical health. Research has identified that loneliness can increase a person’s risk of mortality as much as smoking or alcohol consumption. People with dementia are at particular risk of loneliness and social isolation. This can negatively impact on a person with dementia’s health. To effectively address loneliness in dementia, we must first understand how people with dementia experience loneliness. Methods Interviews were conducted with people living with dementia. Participants comprised of eight community-dwelling individuals, aged 55 years and older (mean = 63.8; range = 55-77), who were each diagnosed with dementia at least one year prior to interview (range = 1.16 – >5 years). Interviews were conducted in participants’ homes using a semi-structured format and lasted between 37-74 minutes. Results Three key themes emerged: the importance of maintaining meaningful relationships, maintaining independence and socio-cultural influences on individual perceptions of loneliness and dementia. The results emphasise the importance of maintaining both a sense of self and meaningful relationships with others post-diagnosis for individuals who identified themselves as “not lonely”. People living with dementia reported that the maintenance of social connection aids in fostering a sense of self-worth and self-management, which in turn mitigates feelings of loneliness. The majority of participants existing social connections with others was established prior to their diagnosis, although the maintenance of these relationships may have required an adjustment of their premorbid routines and method of social engagement. Conclusion Human contact and a meaningful relationship are superior in preventing loneliness. Individual feelings of loneliness or lack thereof are not directly correlated to the coping mechanisms most commonly employed by individuals with dementia. Further exploration is need to understand how people with dementia, who live at home, perceive or experience loneliness.

The paper analyzes the tricky phenomenon of religious feelings related to the question of authenticity. The challenge to describe and make sense of this elusive relationship, providing one exists at all, becomes clearer against the background of two important figures dealing with the psychology of religion – William James (primarily a psychologist) and Bernard Lonergan (primarily a theologian). While James was a naturalist psychologist who put his study on a background of human nature and followed academic scientific discipline, Lonergan was a Christian theologian who set the goal for his whole system not on the level of cognition but on the transcending dimension of being-in-love with God. They both avoided the extremes of their positions and reached out to a more balanced way of understanding religion in its complexity and sometimes ambiguous significance in the lives of human moral subjects.

Streszczenie:
Understanding community dynamics has always been a challenge for policy-makers. Often community policy has been ineffective and wasteful. This research explores and sets out an alternative, complexity-informed approach to community studies. The research develops an innovative, two-stage interview methodology informed by complexity considerations. This methodology is applied to two case studies of community-based organisations in Newcastle upon Tyne. The two case studies allow a comparative assessment of the complexity-informed methodology. In this way, the research uses a complexity-informed approach to produce a holistic and realistic view of the community being examined. By analysing the contribution of those present the research is able to capture information that is relevant and that may be used to bring about change. Complexity-informed approaches are thus shown to be open, flexible, insightful, confidence-building and engaging, when considering people living and working in communities. The research finds complexity considerations to show that, to be effective, public policy needs to offer choices to local people as to how they want to interpret local government policy in their area. This requires more than evidence gathering and assessment of the evidence gathered. It requires the active involvement of the community. Complexity factors such as interaction and emergence are used to identify important relationships and to assess social, economic and environmental changes from the community point of view. These are considered in the context in which they occur and for as long as the situation applies. A complexity-informed approach is shown to open the way for community interventions based on community views and needs. In doing this complexity is able to support genuine decision-making and action by communities for communities. Through discussion and reflection, the thesis finds this to be a suitable basis for public policy formation.

Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Kulturgeografiska institutionen, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-182383.

Streszczenie:
With increasing migration over the last few decades, over 20% of Sweden’s inhabitant are now foreign-born (Krzyżanowski, 2018). A policy shift stemming from the 2015 European migrant crisis (Hagelund, 2020) led to a decentring of integration management from national immigration policy to the local level (Scholten and Penninx, 2016). Subsequently, community level actors have become increasingly active developing their own integration philosophies and implementing these locally. Health and well-being activities curated by the non-governmental organisation Hej Främling seek to improve local inclusion for migrants and newly arrived persons to Sweden. Using these activities as a launching point, this study draws upon perceptions from 17 migrants participating in Hej Främling to examine their feelings of inclusion and sense of belonging across space and place and activities. Results show activity participation both within Hej Främling and across Swedish society more broadly has a positive influence on migrants’ sense of inclusion, in particular through the facilitation of shared spaces of experience, where migrants from diverse backgrounds can come together over a shared interest and build upon their social networks. Concept-mapping was used as a conceptual framework to illuminate the core components of inclusion, how they interlink and contribute to further conceptualisation. This study identifies four key insights for local inclusion: 1) the value of shared experiences in creating inclusion 2) the perceived socio-cultural barriers to inclusion 3) activity space as environments for intercultural encounters and 4) the facilitative role of community organisations in creating inclusion and promoting integration.

Vijayakrishnan, Swetha. "The architectural complexity of the human PDC core assembly." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2009. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/573/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The mammalian pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC) is a key multi-enzyme assembly linking the glycolytic pathway to the TCA cycle via the specific conversion of pyruvate to acetyl CoA and, as such, is responsible for the maintenance of glucose homeostasis in humans. PDC comprises a central pentagonal dodecahedral core of 60 dihydrolipoamide acetyltransferase (E2) and 12 E3 binding protein (E3BP) subunits. Presently, two conflicting models of PDC (E2+E3BP) core organisation exist: the ‘addition’ (60+12) and ‘substitution’ (48+12) models. In addition to its catalytic role, the multi-domain E2/E3BP core provides the structural framework to which 30 pyruvate decarboxylase (E1) heterotetramers and 6-12 dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase (E3) homodimers are proposed to bind at maximal occupancy. The formation of specific E2:E1 and E3BP:E3 subcomplexes are characteristic of eukaryotic PDCs and are critical for normal complex function. Despite the availability of limited structural data, the exact subunit organisation and mechanism of operation of the mammalian E2/E3BP core remains unknown. This thesis describes the large-scale purification of tagged, recombinant human PDC cores, full-length rE2 and rE2/E3BP, truncated E2/E3BP, peripheral rE3 enzyme as well as native E2/E3BP core (bE2/E3BP) purified from bovine heart. The ability to purify large amounts of pure protein has enabled the characterisation of the individual cores as well as the E2/E3BP:E3 complex using a variety of biochemical and biophysical techniques. Full-length rE2/E3BP, rE2, bE2/E3BP, truncated E2/E3BP (tLi19/tLi30) and rE2/E3BP:E3 were analysed in solution by analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC). While AUC of the cores supported the substitution model of core organisation, the stoichiometry of interaction was determined to be 2:1 (rE2/E3BP:E3). This was further complemented by gel filtration chromatography (GFC) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS), implying the possible existence of a network of E3 ‘cross-bridges’ linking pairs of E3BP molecules across the surface of the E2 core assembly. Low resolution solution structures obtained for rE2/E3BP, bE2/E3BP and tLi19/tLi30 by small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and SANS revealed the presence of icosahedral cores with open pentagonal faces favouring the substitution model of core organisation. These solution structures also indicated high structural similarity between the recombinant and native cores, as well as with the crystal structure obtained previously for the truncated bacterial E2 core. In addition, homology modelling and superimpositions of high- and low-resolution structures of the core revealed conservation of the overall pentagonal dodecahedral morphology despite evolutionary diversity. Evidence for the substitution model of core organisation was further substantiated by negative stain EM of the recombinant and bovine E2/E3BP cores. SANS stoichiometry data indicated the binding of 10 E3 dimers per E2/E3BP core. Although this could correspond to approximately 1:1 stoichiometry between E2/E3BP:E3, subsequent radiolabelling studies suggested possible variation in core subunit composition between the native and recombinant E2/E3BP cores. Therefore, as opposed to the 48E2+12E3BP substitution model based on AUC and SAXS studies with the recombinant E2/E3BP core, rE2/E3BP cores produced in this study indicated a higher level of incorporation of E3BPs with a maximum core composition of 40E2+20E3BP. On the basis of this new finding we have proposed the ‘variable E3BP substitution model’, wherein the number of E3BPs within the core can range from 0 to a maximum of 20, thus resulting in variable populations of E2/E3BP cores. Despite this core variability, the highly controlled regulatory mechanisms in vivo may bias the core composition towards an average of 48E2+12E3BP. However, as the over-expression of the recombinant E2/E3BP core in our study is not as tightly regulated as in vivo, higher number of E3BPs (>12) is observed to be integrated into the core. This new level of architectural complexity and variable subunit composition in mammalian PDC core organisation is likely to have important implications for the catalytic mechanism, overall complex efficiency and tissue-specific regulation by the intrinsic PDC kinases (PDKs) in normal and disease states. The E2 cores of the PDC family are known to be highly flexible, exhibiting inherent size variability reflective of the ‘breathing’ of the core. Integration of E3BP into the E2 core assembly would then be expected to have significant consequences for the structural assembly, affecting the ‘breathing’ and in turn the function and regulation of the complex. Unfolding studies to assess core stability via circular dichroism (CD) and tryptophan fluorescence revealed lower stability of the rE2/E3BP core as compared to cores composed exclusively of rE2 subunits, thus implying the contribution of E3BP towards core destabilisation. In addition, crosslinking studies indicated weak dimerisation of rE3BP, which may be a key factor promoting core destabilisation. The lower stability of the E2/E3BP core may be of benefit in mammals where sophisticated fine tuning is required to obtain cores with optimal catalytic and regulatory efficiencies. SAXS solution structures of E2/E3BP cores obtained were unable to locate the exact positions of E3BP within the core. However, SANS in combination with contrast matching of selectively deuterated components as well as cryo-EM, EM tomography and single molecule studies could be used in future for determination of the exact locations of E3BP, and validating the importance of E2/E3BP core organisation and subunit composition for overall PDC function and regulation.

Ganguly, Amartya. "Modelling of the human quiet stance with ankle joint complexity." Thesis, University of Hull, 2014. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:11634.

Streszczenie:
This study derives an inverted pendulum model for quiet stance in humans around the ankle joints with 4×9-element mass-spring-damper (MSD) units as the musculoskeletal connections between the shank and foot bilaterally. The model focuses on the role played by both the stiffness and the damping parameters of muscles, tendons and ligaments about the ankle complex. This model partitions muscles, tendons and ligaments functionally. This novel model is used to study the behaviour of individual components in relation to quiet standing. The Lagrange d’ Alembert principle has been used to derive the equations of motion of the system and resulted in eighteen 2nd order differential equations with nine constraints. Four MSD units connects with the shank (tibia and fibula) and foot bilaterally. The units function passively and are representative of the mechanical functionality of muscles, tendons, and ligaments about the ankle complex. The dynamics of the MSD units are considered linear in nature and their stiffness and damping parameters are calculated by finding the slope of the force vs. deformation length curve and force vs. velocity curve reported in the literature. The simulation results revealed that the torques generated by the internal constraints through the MSD units are significantly greater than the gravitational torque. A case study has been conducted for eyes open vs. eyes closed conditions. It was found that the angular displacement of the shank varied but the overall range of motion of the ankle joint remained constant at 0.6. This was expected as there was no external perturbation applied to facilitate any amount of plantarflexion or dorsiflexion at the point of articulation of the ankle joint. In conclusion, the model derived and analysed in this study explains that the human body was able to maintain its upright posture mechanically during unperturbed quiet standing without the use of an active control system emphasising the importance of damping and its influence on postural balance. Furthermore, this sophisticated model is not limited to only considering the muscle-tendon unit and ligaments play an important role in maintaining balance during quiet stance and are therefore included in the model. This model is physiologically more realistic than previously developed postural models thus providing a deeper insight towards the passive mechanism of postural balance and providing a new approach towards future postural models.

The present work deals with the problem of the semantic complexity in natural language, proposing an hypothesis based on some features of natural language sentences that determine their difficulty for human understanding. We aim at introducing a general framework for semantic complexity, in which the processing difficulty depends on the interaction between two components: a Memory component, which is responsible for the storage of corpus-extracted event representations, and a Unification component, which is responsible for combining the units stored in Memory into more complex structures. We propose that semantic complexity depends on the difficulty of building a semantic representation of the event or the situation conveyed by a sentence, that can be either retrieved directly from the semantic memory or built dynamically by solving the constraints included in the stored representations. In order to test our intuitions, we built a Distributional Semantic Model to compute a compositional cost for the sentence unification process. Our tests on several psycholinguistic datasets showed that our model is able to account for semantic phenomena such as the context-sensitive update of argument expectations and of logical metonymies

ITC/USA 2011 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Seventh Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 24-27, 2011 / Bally's Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Nevada<br>A highly compressed image inevitably has visible compression artifacts. To minimize these artifacts, many compression algorithms exploit the varying sensitivity of the human visual system (HVS) to different frequencies. However, this sensitivity has typically been measured at the near-threshold level where distortion is just noticeable. Thus, it is unclear that the same sensitivity applies at the supra-threshold level where distortion is highly visible. In this paper, we measure the sensitivity of the HVS for several supra-threshold distortion levels based on our JPEG2000 distortion model. Then, a low-complexity JPEG2000 encoder using the measured sensitivity is described. For aerial images, the proposed encoder significantly reduces encoding time while maintaining superior visual quality compared with a conventional JPEG2000 encoder.

Streszczenie:
The book examines how so-called human inner life – feelings, emotions, sentiments and self-reflection – permeates different forms of art. The methodological perspective is multidimensional covering translation studies and semiotics studies, including semiotics of passion, semiotics of culture, existential semiotics and biosemiotics, as well as different arts’ fields – music, literature, film, visual arts, multimedia and video games. The book combines these approaches and tools for each field in order to create a new approach that permits an examination of the process of translation in various arts connected to human inner life. In this way, the reader can see the complexity of human inner life from an interdisciplinary perspective.

AbstractWoven around Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Olaudah Equiano’s Interesting Narrative, Peter Høeg’s Miss Smilla’s Feeling for Snow, and Merle Kröger’s Havarie (Collision), this chapter discusses the concurrence between the search for knowledge and the topic of human disposability in texts and events relating to the contact zones of the Arctic and the Mediterranean. It views them as combining macrogeographical considerations of oceanic contact with reflections on the micro-level of human experience, resonating with Edward Said’s and Kirsten Gruesz’s pleas for investigating “overlapping geographies,” “intertwined histories,” and maritime geopolitical regions as “engines” of empire. Straddling the period between the beginning of globalization and the recent past, these literary texts are harnessed to critical reflections on the complexity of these maritime, social, and epistemic connections and contact zones beyond the landed history of nations and mainlands.

In order to get a person out of the state of deep spiritual crisis in all spheres of life, it is necessary for him to realize spirituality as a necessary condition for both successful development and for the preservation of humanity. The affirmation of universal human values in consciousness and behavior of a person is the basis of his/her spiritual health and moral well-being, aspiration for creative creation. However, the whole complexity of the modern situation is that spirituality in a person's worldview, in the system of life priorities, is of secondary importance. This is due to the domination of the technocratic way of thinking of the person who replaced moral feelings and prefers only materialistic values.

Streszczenie:
A person's relationship with the world around him is not only understood and manifested in actions, but is also experienced in the form of emotions. Emotions are one form of reflection of the real world by consciousness. Accompanying almost any manifestation of the subject's activity, emotions serve as one of the main mechanisms of internal regulation of mental activity and behavior aimed at satisfying real needs. The emotional sphere is an important component in the development of preschoolers, because no communication or interaction will be effective if its participants are not able, firstly, to "read" the emotional state of the other and, secondly, to manage their the emotions. Understanding emotions and feelings is also an important part of becoming a growing person. The formation of a person's emotions is the most important condition for his development as a personality. The extraordinary diversity of human emotions is explained by the complexity of the relationships between the objects of his needs, the specific conditions of their appearance and the activities aimed at their realization. The class of emotions includes: moods, feelings, affects, passions, stresses. These are the so-called "pure" emotions. They are included in all processes and mental states of a person. A preschooler at the age of 4-5 is a person with a rich and diverse emotional world, he feels deeply, his experiences, first of all, are closely related to relationships in the circle of loved ones. The emotional development of a preschooler is primarily associated with the emergence of new interests, motives and needs. The most important change in the motivational sphere is the emergence of social motives that are no longer conditioned by the achievement of narrow personal utilitarian objectives. Therefore, social emotions and moral feelings begin to develop intensively.

Streszczenie:
Due to an increase in the use of cars and the growing complexity of driving situations, the number of people injured in traffic accidents has increased to 50 million. One of the most crucial factors contributing to accidents is driver’s behavior. A driver state which is known to provoke risky driver behavior is haste. Haste is defined as the state where the driver has feelings of urgency or pressure due to a lack of temporal resources. If it would be possible to automatically detect when a driver starts hurrying for being late for an appointment, this could be used to develop novel accident-prevention systems. The research reported on in this paper aims at exploring knowledge for the development and implementation of a car subsystem that can reliably detect driving in haste. Identification of indicators of haste has not received much attention in research so far. In this paper we present how we gathered the necessary knowledge and qualified indicators by contrasting the findings of a literature study with that of five focus group sessions, involving drivers and experts. These explorative studies have confirmed our assumption that haste not only manifests in changed human behavior, but it also influences human-car interaction, the state of the car and the car-environment interaction. Accordingly, we have sorted the proposed indicators into groups, and validated them from several aspects. This knowledge provides a good basis for the follow-up research cycles, in which we will test the strongest indicators, investigate the opportunities of detecting them within cars, and propose a technical solution for detecting driving in haste.

Streszczenie:
Assistive robotics is making significant progress in a wide variety of areas and will play a key role in the coming years as part of strategies for Ageing in Place and Active and Healthy Aging. Despite the demonstrated potential of technology to support the care of elderly and frail people, some elements still limit its application, such as the technology acceptability issue. The acceptability of technology, in particular for elderly and frail users, is a delicate issue, whose assessment metrics offer many opportunities for design research: in fact, the interaction that users establish with assistive technologies defines the very experience of aging (Forlizzi et al., 2004).The complexity of Human-Robot Interaction requires multidisciplinary collaboration that includes engineers, designers, health and social service associations and cooperatives, caregivers, economists, sociologists, lawyers, psychologists, therapists, and even end users such as the elderly and their families. In an effort to design for acceptability, it is therefore essential to make effective interdisciplinary cooperation among all professionals involved in the development of robotic systems. However, despite the common background in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), the scientific and methodological approaches of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) and Human-Centred Design (HCD) are significantly different in methods, philosophy and structure. The presented research is based on a general hypothesis: the HCD approach, if applied to the preliminary design phases of assistive robots, could lead to a deep understanding of needs, expectations and desires of people. Designers can use many methods (interviews, focus groups, ethnography, etc.) to explore people’s emotions and other abstract feelings that cannot be investigated through quantitative tools and statistical data. An appropriate knowledge of the user, of the context in which the interaction takes place and of the activities to be performed, could increase the attitude and intention of people to use assistive robots. This process would be even more effective if the designer knew the variables of acceptance in the HRI field. Designers often work within a multidisciplinary team composed of engineers, computer scientists, psychologists, sociologists, etc. Designers are catalysts for different professional skills involved in the project: consequently, they should also know the evaluation methods and intervention strategies in the field of HRI. This would lead designers to have a broader view on design processes and to recognize the most important variables of acceptability in robotics. On this basis, the tool "Robotics &amp; Design: the tool to design Human-Centered Assistive Robotics," online at www.roboticsdesign.org, was developed. This tool, presented in this paper, has two main goals:- design purpose: to support the development of a cross-disciplinary collaborative process, to excerpt design patterns (Preece, 2015) from the results of scientific trials as they can be used by other designers according to users' features, activities, and contexts of use and then be translated into tangible design solutions;- theoretical and scientific purpose: to develop a methodological bridge between the HCD and HRI fields; and to provide designers and researchers in design with tools for agile consultation of the main methodologies and variables of acceptability in robotics and their intercorrelation.

Streszczenie:
Autonomous vehicle technologies are rapidly growing and are expected to change transportation habits radically. Autonomous cars increase the likelihood of motion sickness by allowing everyone in the vehicle to become passengers and perform non-driving tasks such as reading, working, and socializing. Comfort is one of the critical factors in the acceptance of autonomous vehicles. This makes accurate estimation of motion sickness a necessity in the development stages of autonomous vehicles. The sensory conflict theory is a widely accepted theory that explains the mechanism of motion sickness. Computational models based on the sensory conflict theory are used to predict motion sickness and contain two main parts: a human perception model and a nonlinear fitting function to the subjective feeling of motion sickness. Models of the human perception, including the dynamics of the vestibular system, are used to calculate the difference between sensory inputs and the predicted motions in the brain, i.e. the conflict signal, which is the primary cause of motion sickness. One of the main limitations of motion sickness prediction is how to mathematically model human perception because of the complexity of the psychophysiological systems. The aim of this work is to implement and analyse different human perception modelling techniques, such as observer framework in the control theory and optimal estimator approach using Kalman filters, to evaluate their abilities to integrate with motion sickness prediction. In this study, the different human perception models are implemented and analysed using MATLAB / Simulink and the advantages, as well as disadvantages of the models, are discussed.

In the act of caring, it was widely disseminated as important lookingat the person being cared for and the needs that could be revealedin the construction of the relationship throughout the care process with the caregiver. In this research, our gaze is directed to the caregiver, making it possible to enablewhich meanings, values and beliefs are presentedin the conduct of their lives and how thedialogue with the current speechesin society try to capture them from modelsthat obscure the production of their subjectivity. In this regard, human relationships can be created and always recreated, and any dogmatic forms of relationship can produce limitations of meaning and existential suffering. As a general objective, we sought to understand the production of subjectivity of the caregiver of people with disabilities in the encounter with the disabled subject to be cared for. As specific objectives, to analyze the meanings that permeate the relationship between the caregiver and the person with a disability, in addition to investigatethe meanings unveiled in work relationships and in the affectiverelationships between the caregiver and the person with a disability. The specific objectives analyze the meanings related to the work relationship and affection that goesthrough the crossingswith a care character. In this way, families received specialattention, as many caregivers are family members, withoutdisregardingthe importance of professionals hired to exercise the role of caregiver. With regard to methodology, the guiding methods of the research were Cartography and Phenomenology, using semi-open interviews, as well as a systematic literature review. Ten interviews were produced frompeople of the professional field tocaregivers whose familymembers demanded care due to being disabled. It was possible to noticeresults about the phenomenonand singularities of the established relationshipsthat care implied in a deep existential investment by all respondents, both those who proposed to be involved by job function and those which life directed them in favor of a family member or close person. The speeches that initially seemed well structured, gradually unveiled meanings that indicated a deep regret for the suffering and the severe condition of limitation of the person to be cared for. The searchingfor meaning went beyond mere rationality, and spirituality became a key element in the attempt to nurture existential anxieties. Several participants emphasized that despite the constant physical fatigue and emotional exhaustion, consideringthe complexity of each case in particular, the satisfaction of being able to help, reciprocate or even be useful by applying care made this relationship lighter and more meaningful. Contradictory feelings such as love and a feeling that the caregiver's life is paralyzed, due to the dedication to the person to becared for, clearly emerged

Traditionally, the interactions of drugs and toxicants with human tissue have been investigated in a reductionist way—for example, by focusing on specific molecular targets and using single-cell-type cultures before testing compounds in whole organisms. More recently, “systems biology” approaches attempt to enhance the predictive value of in vitro biological data by adopting a comprehensive description of biological systems and using computational tools that are sophisticated enough to handle the complexity of these systems. However, the utility of computational models resulting from these efforts completely relies on the quality of the data used to construct them. Here, we propose that recent advances in the development of bioengineered, three-dimensional, multicellular constructs provide in vitro data of sufficient complexity and physiological relevance to be used in predictive systems biology models of human responses. Such predictive models are essential to maximally leveraging these emerging bioengineering technologies to improve both therapeutic development and toxicity risk assessment. This brief outlines the opportunities presented by emerging technologies and approaches for the acceleration of drug development and toxicity testing, as well as the challenges lying ahead for the field.

We propose a decomposition of ontologies into smaller components that can be repaired in parallel. We show the utility of our approach for ontology repair, provide algorithms for computing this decomposition through standard reasoning, and study the complexity of several associated problems.

Abstract Quantum cognition applies quantum probability theory and mathematical principles from quantum mechanics to model human decision-making, reasoning, and cognitive processes beyond the constraints of classical probability models. Traditional decision theories, such as expected utility theory and Bayesian inference, struggle to explain context-dependent reasoning, preference reversals, order effects, and cognitive biases observed in human behavior. By incorporating superposition, interference, and entanglement, quantum cognitive models offer a probabilistic framework that better accounts for uncertainty, ambiguity, and adaptive decision-making in complex environments. This research explores the foundations of quantum cognition, its empirical validation in behavioral experiments and neuroscience, and its applications in artificial intelligence (AI), behavioral economics, and decision sciences. Additionally, it examines how quantum-inspired AI models enhance predictive analytics, machine learning algorithms, and human-computer interaction. The study also addresses challenges related to mathematical complexity, cognitive interpretation, and the potential link between quantum mechanics and brain function, providing a comprehensive framework for the integration of quantum cognition into decision science and AI-driven cognitive computing. The Mekong River is the largest river in Southeast Asia, arising in the mountains of China, flowing along the border of Myanmar and Laos, and through Laos and Cambodia into Vietnam; 80% of the Mekong Delta lies within Vietnam. The biodiversity of the Delta and southern Vietnam as a whole depends on the cycles of the river. The Mekong Delta wetlands are highly productive and valuable for both use and non-use reasons. Unfortunately, they are also highly threatened by human activities resulting in degraded water quality, change in species composition, and pollution. This Vietnam-focused case study allows students to tackle this real-world conservation problem by approaching the topic from a variety of angles, thereby teaching them to appreciate the complexity of such issues (biological, geographical, environmental, political, and socio-economical).

Human resources are essential to ensure the quality of long-term care. Yet, there are many things we do not know about the wellbeing, the working conditions, and the training of the caregivers for older people. Our work aims to fill some of the existing knowledge gaps by analyzing new data on the conditions of paid and unpaid caregivers in Latin America and the Caribbean. The new data is generated by a continuous self-administered online survey created by the Inter-American Development Bank, implemented since November 2023 in English, Portuguese, and Spanish in 25 countries. The results highlight the vulnerability of both paid and unpaid caregivers. Paid caregivers typically earn the minimum wage or less. A notable percentage reports episodes of verbal (39%) or physical abuse (14%). Three in ten received no training. Unpaid caregivers are not better off. 31% report feelings of depression and 44% say they had to stop working to provide care for their relatives. Only one in five had any formal training. Given that most long-term carers are women, these results have important implication for gender equality. The findings underscore the pressing need for policies to develop skills and improve working conditions and wellbeing of caregivers, which is further exacerbated by rapid population aging in the region. By shedding light on these critical issues, this work is relevant for the design and implementation of care policies that improve the wellbeing of both older persons and their caregivers.
