Can student-centred courses utilising experiential learning techniques automatically lead to students' greater social awareness or are students locked in to narrow immediate experiences and, in some cases, conditioned by external course structures outside of their control? This article explores these issues by means of an examination of recent developments in UK workers' education. It argues for a pluralistic provision of experiential and structured courses to meet union training and educational requirements of workers. Broadly applied, this argument defends the use of traditional liberal adult education to support social awareness and social action. Résumé Est-ce que des equrs centrés sur 1'étudiant, ou sont employées des techniques d'apprentissage expérientielles, conduisent automatiquement à une plus large conscience sociale, ou est-ce que les étudiants se trouvent enfermés à I'intérieur de leurs expériences personnelles immédiates? Et ne seraient-ils pas, dans certains cas, conditionnés par des structures pédagogiques qui échappent à leur contrôle? Nous analysons ici ces dilemmes à la lumière des développements récents en études ouvrieres au Royaume-Uni. Notre argument favorise, pour satisfaire aux exigences pédagogiques, un mode pluraliste de cours, à la fois éxperientiel et structuré. Sur un plan plus global, il favorise une pratique d'éducation permanente traditionnelle et libérale pour promouvoir la conscience et l'action sociales.

Gérard Bouchard a proposé une refondation identitaire à la faveur de laquelle la souveraineté trouverait une signification nouvelle avec la redéfinition plus large et plus inclusive du sujet historique canadien-français. Dans une autre perspective, Jocelyn Létourneau récuse le volontarisme de Bouchard en invoquant le fait que devrait être assumée « l’ambivalence d’être » des Québécois qui les rend réfractaires aux positions politiques trop affirmées. Au-delà de leurs divergences fondamentales, ces thèses se rejoignent dans une certaine mésestimation des pesanteurs communautaristes de la conscience historique francophone, la première pour mieux abolir une mémoire trop étroitement associée au vécu canadien-français, la seconde pour évacuer l’idée de projet politique.

Ce côté futile du bavardage soulignait, pour une conscience féministe, l'impuissance de la femme à diriger son propre destin. En théorisant ces formes dévaluées du parler-femme sous le signe du bavardage, Suzanne Lamy et Luce Irigaray les réinscrivent par contre dans un discours transgressif celui qui s'entend dans quelques romans québécois s'attaquant aux structures linguistico-politiques de la société, tels Les Nuits de l'Underground, de Marie-Claire Biais, Le Pique-nique sur l'Acropole, de Louky Bersianik, ou Nous parlerons comme on écrit, de France Théoret. En outre, Nous avons tous découvert l'Amérique, de Francine Noël, publié dix ans après le roman de Théoret, nous montre que le bavardage est un instrument indispensable pour toute société pluraliste dans laquelle la femme veut devenir un sujet à part entière. La science historique, on le sait, a toujours eu partie liée avec l’actualité ; elle ne se construit jamais à distance de ses soubresauts. La société québécoise en offre présentement quelques exemples éloquents. Ainsi, depuis quelques années, une controverse s’est élevée au sujet de l’enseignement de l’histoire nationale ; certains voudraient lui assigner une fonction à dominante civique, alors que d’autres insistent sur sa vocation d’éveilleuse de la conscience nationale. En parallèle, une autre controverse a mis en cause la survie de la culture québécoise dans un contexte de diversité ethnoculturelle. L’orientation pluraliste préconisée par un grand nombre de citoyens (et mise en forme dans l’interculturalisme québécois) est accusée de compromettre la continuité culturelle du Québec francophone, contraignant en quelque sorte ses membres à renoncer à leur mémoire, d’oublier ce qu’ils sont. De la même façon, le débat sur les valeurs dites nationales présente couramment les valeurs universelles comme impropres à nourrir une véritable identité ; on serait ici irrémédiablement confronté à la dichotomie particularisme-universalisme. Dans chacun de ces cas (et d’autres qui sont brièvement abordés dans le texte), on observe que deux sphères ou deux entités sont posées comme antinomiques. Cet article voudrait montrer que c’est une erreur, qu’en réalité on est en présence non pas d’une contradiction mais d’une complémentarité.

This essay explores the relationship between the individual, the state and the church. In particular, it considers he ways that a particularly influential group of early twentieth-century state-critics – the English pluralist – grappled with the tension between state authority and individual liberty through a careful engagement with the thought of John Henry Newman. But while English pluralists like J. N. Figgis and Harold Laski admired Newman's critiques of ultramontanism, they could not accept some of Newman's premises, particularly those regarding the conscience, which underlay his rejection of ultramontanism. English pluralism, this essay suggests, was beset by a kind of conceptual confusion which its proponents recognized but could not – or would not – resolve.

AbstractThis article examines legislative changes related to abortion regulation in Australia that create obligations of medical referral on practitioners who have a conscientious objection to abortion. Despite a significant Australian history of accepting secularized conscience claims, particularly in the field of military conscription, the limitation of conscience claims about abortion can be traced to a failure to appreciate the significant secular arguments that can be made to support such claims. We draw on arguments of plurality and pragmatism as capable of providing a firm foundation for legislative protections of freedom of conscience in the case of medical referral for abortion. These justifications are not dependent on religious grounds, and therefore they have the potential to be relevant and persuasive in a secular society such as Australia. Acceptance of a pluralistic argument in favor of freedom of conscience is a powerful commitment to the creation of a society that values human autonomy and a diversity of opinion. It sits comfortably with the democratic values that are enshrined in the Australian political system and institutions. It avoids the potential damage to the individual that may be wrought when conscience is overridden by state compulsion.

L’historiographie religieuse régionale a longtemps dressé une ligne de partage entre une Alsace catholique et une Alsace protestante au singulier. Cette division étonne pour l’époque moderne quand on sait la pluralité des protestantismes. L’approche comparative entre les cas microhistoriques de Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, de Bischwiller et du bailliage de Cleebourg veut questionner l’émergence d’une conscience ou d’une appréhension unitaire des protestants en Alsace dès les XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. Le pluralisme confessionnel de ces trois espaces est représentatif de la complexité protestante dans la région. L’étude des relations et de la coexistence intra-protestante dans ces espaces souligne comment, malgré une proximité dogmatique, des frontières confessionnelles se dressent entre protestants. Si des ententes et des actions communes semblent émerger timidement dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle, elles restent circonstanciées en fonction de besoins ou pour la défense des droits confessionnels face aux catholiques. Ces ententes évoquent alors plus une reconnaissance mutuelle entre protestants qu’une fraternité ou une conscience d’unité. Cette dernière semble davantage s’amorcer dans le regard extérieur des autorités sur les protestants d’Alsace à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, sans pour autant gommer les différences internes.

Neste artigo, examino a duplicidade de sentidos que a tese pluralista “os seres são múltiplos” ou “se há múltiplos seres” (πολλά ἐστι τὰ ὄντα) comporta: pode significar uma multiplicade numérica, isto é: a tese de que há mais de uma coisa no mundo, assim como pode significar que uma mesma coisa possui mais de um atributo. Incialmente, argumento que Sócrates estava consciente desta ambiguidade, pois as duas compreensões de pluralismo representam perspectivas complementares de uma mesma posição filosófica. Segundo minha interpretação, o reconhecimento dessa ambiguidade permite melhor entender a crítica de Sócrates ao monismo eleático, sua defesa da Teoria das Ideias e sua distinção entre Formas transcendentes e propriedades imanentes. Estes dois sentidos de multiplicidade farão ainda parte da estratégia utilizada por Parmênides na sua contra-argumentação à solução socrática ao paradoxo de Zenão.

The article reveals the nature and manifestations of Ukrainian religious pluralism. Despite the constant interest in the topic - the plurality of religious life in Ukraine, science has not yet clarified the causes and roots of this phenomenon. The author analyzes the historical, psychological, socio-political factors that caused the religious diversity of Ukraine. The presence of many religious traditions within one ethnic and state territory promotes tolerant relations between bearers of different religious beliefs. Ukraine's religious plurality distinguishes Ukrainians from other nations. This gives grounds to consider Ukraine a unique religious phenomenon of the European level (Casanova). Religious plurality is a condition for the establishment of the principles of freedom of religion, freedom of choice.
The author derives worldview plurality and polydenominationalism in Ukraine from the history of the Ukrainian people, looking for their origins in the pre-Christian and later early Christian era. The presence of heresy in Ukraine as a generalized form of coexistence of different worldviews explains the current richness of religious traditions, their syncretization.
The article makes an intermediate conclusion that the history itself, living conditions, national character of the people formed Ukraine denominationally plural.
Based on such a historical foundation, since gaining state independence in 1991, Ukraine has been self-determined in its priorities regarding the country's spiritual / religious development. The Law “On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations” adopted by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine created a legal basis for the equal existence and development of different religions in Ukraine. The plurality of Ukrainian society is enshrined in law.
The basic principles of the plurality of religious life are confirmed by specific digital data that illustrate the richness of religious traditions in Ukraine quantitatively and qualitatively. The author provides statistics on all religions and denominations that exist in Ukraine, giving the number of communities, monasteries, schools, priests, publications and more. Detailed information seeks to form a holistic picture of the religious life of Ukraine.
The analyzed data give grounds to single out the factors that determine the religious plurality of Ukraine.
According to the author, at the beginning of the XXI century the denominational network of Ukraine has largely already formed. The mass emergence of new religious movements is unlikely. Nevertheless, Ukraine has not yet exhausted all the possibilities of religious pluralism. It can grow not only due to the emergence of some exotic, technological, syncretic religions, but also because of intra-confessional division or unity of communities.
In Ukraine, there are structures (public, scientific, state, educational, and interreligious) that cultivate interreligious tolerance, which will ensure a high level of religious freedom. However, religious pluralism in Ukraine is periodically threatened by various circumstances - internal and external, general and local, collective and personal.
In conclusion, religious pluralism is determined as a guarantor of religious freedom, the right of everyone to profess his chosen system of spiritual values.

La religion est souvent conçue comme une limite à la liberté de conscience. Cependant, du point de vue de la philosophie de la religion, il est nécessaire de souligner l'importance de l'adoption de la démocratie, qui reconnaît la liberté de conscience comme un moyen mais aussi comme finalité du pouvoir politique, en tant que principe de gouvernement. La limitation de la liberté de conscience par la religion peut être expliquée, sur le plan anthropologique, par la fonction dentitaire assurée par la religion. Néanmoins, la religion, pouvant exister sans être acceptée par tous, n'implique pas en elle-même une telle contrainte. Au-delà de la preuve d'une possible coexistence de la religion et du pluralisme politique, la religion implique intrinsèquement la reconnaissance de la liberté de conscience, résultant de la condition humaine elle-même. En retour, la foi en la valeur égale de la conscience de chaque être humain apparaît comme une motivation de la consécration juridique de la liberté de conscience.

Swaine distinguishes between logic and rhetoric, between that which should persuade and that which is likely to persuade. He suggests that a justification of liberal principles founded on conscience should persuade honest theocrats and Swaine makes the case that this should matter to both liberals and theocrats. The liberal, who founds a justification of liberal principles in conscience and accommodates those whose conscience forces them to seek exemption from certain conventional norms, in Swaine's view, is acting in a manner consistent with the authentic spirit of liberal principles. A liberal democratic state reflecting such a spirit, Swaine argues, is in a stronger position logically to expect theocrats to view it as a legitimate political authority. Otherwise, it is presumptuous, he suggests, for a liberal democratic state to expect the allegiance of theocrats.

Contemporary challenges on religious belief and practice occur often within democratic polities; they do appear as advocates for equality before law, state neutrality and for freedom of conscience. Such claims perceived as demands for equal justice mark the public sphere of the West thanks especially to an expanding consciousness of individual rights and increasing religious cultural diversity, a phenomenon due also to immigration. These are obvious signs of the Western society becoming more and more pluralistic, but in a way distinct from such traditional polities elsewhere. Whatever the advantages of a pluralist society, it is also seen as a potential threat to entrenched values. How would then a democratic regime deal with multiculturalism and religious freedom, guaranteeing social coherence and security, becomes a crucial contemporary issue. Employing the Quebec Charter of Values as a case in point, this essay highlights the importance of re-defining the public sphere. It has to be a discursive sphere which would only materialize when rationality and emotions play an equal role, in shaping the social body, especially through narratives. And religions do seem to have an important role to play here, not only in shaping a strong, open self-identity, but also in recognizing the common, human vulnerability.

In a climate of plurality about the concept of what is “good,” one of the most daunting challenges facing contemporary medicine is the provision of medical care within the mosaic of ethical diversity. Juxtaposed with escalating scientific knowledge and clinical prowess has been the concomitant erosion of unity of thought in medical ethics. With innumerable technologies now available in the armamentarium of healthcare, combined with escalating realities of financial constraints, cultural differences, moral divergence, and ideological divides among stakeholders, medical professionals and their patients are increasingly faced with ethical quandaries when making medical decisions. Amidst the plurality of values, ethical collision arises when the values of individual health professionals are dissonant with the expressed requests of patients, the common practice amongst colleagues, or the directives from regulatory and political authorities. In addition, concern is increasing among some medical practitioners due to mounting attempts by certain groups to curtail freedom of independent conscience—by preventing medical professionals from doing what to them is apparently good, or by compelling practitioners to do what they, in conscience, deem to be evil. This paper and the case study presented will explore issues related to freedom of conscience and consider practical approaches to ethical collision in clinical medicine.

En raison de fortes tensions ethniques qui le mettent en branle, l’État en Afrique vit un délitement du tissu collectif. Dans un contexte de pluralisme ethnique fort, la négation de ce pluralisme par la politique d’assimilation a eu pour effet contraire l’édification d’un sectarisme ethnique donnant lieu à une instabilité socio-politique. En réaction, la prise en considération institutionnelle de l’ethnie n’a pu empêcher cette instabilité. Oscillant ainsi entre politique d’assimilation et naturalisation normative de l’ethnie, l’État y vit une crise du bien commun. Le présent article vise à montrer que la gestion du pluralisme ethnique en Afrique ne saurait se réduire à de simples dispositions politico-juridiques. Il s’agit bien plutôt de promouvoir la perspective de la postcommunauté qui vient fédérer trois types de mobilisations enchevêtrées : l’une relative à la conscience, l’autre à la participation de toutes les composantes communautaires au bien commun, enfin celle relative aux nouvelles responsabilités de l’État.

Les approches traditionnelles envers le libéralisme et la laïcité ont rendu cette réconciliation particulièrement difficile, en promouvant une vision insatisfaisante, sur le plan conceptuel, d'un espace public areligieux, hyper-rationnel et dénué d'engagements moraux. En même temps, les théoriciens libéraux n'ont pas apprécié entièrement la nature et les demandes de la conscience religieuse. Cet article aborde les notions de libéralisme, de sécularisme et de conscience religieuse et suggère une compréhension de la relation entre les trois qui impliquerait un pluralisme arbitré sur la base des prémisses d'un langage de valeurs civiques. À l'aide d'une analyse de la jurisprudence canadienne, l'auteur montre que cette forme de réconciliation est déjà tacitement à l'œuvre. Cette approche est la manière la plus cohérente pour tracer les limites de la conscience religieuse au Canada et donne de la substance à la liberté religieuse tout en respectant le bien commun et les acquis du libéralisme séculier.

Plus spécifiquement, nous voudrions montrer que, si son effort pour articuler une théorie de l’aménagement de la diversité morale et religieuse a certes contribué à critiquer les régimes rigides de la laïcité, Taylor accorde une prééminence incontestable à la liberté de conscience. Or, notre analyse entend démontrer que, selon cette vue, il n’y a pas de place pour l’autonomie religieuse. Notre hypothèse est qu’en présentant les conflits moraux et religieux comme des enjeux de justice, Taylor néglige l’important clivage existant entre, d’une part, les questions de reconnaissance reliées à la différence culturelle et, d’autre part, les revendications d’autorité exprimées par des groupes — et pas simplement des membres individuels — au sein de la sphère publique.

Background: Ethical nursing practice is increasingly challenging, and strategies for addressing ethical dilemmas are needed to support nurses’ ethical care provision. Conscientious objection is one such strategy for addressing nurses’ personal, ethical conflicts, at times associated with conscience. Exploring both conscience and conscientious objection provides understanding regarding their implications for ethical nursing practice, research, and education. Research aim: To analyze the concepts of conscience and conscientious objection in the context of nurses. Design: Concept analysis using the method by Walker and Avant. Research context: Data were retrieved from Philosopher’s Index, PubMed, and CINAHL with no date restrictions. Ethical consideration: This analysis was carried out per established, scientific guidelines. Findings: Ethical concepts are integral to nursing ethics, yet little is known about conscientious objection in relation to conscience for nurses. Of note, both concepts are well established in ethics literature, addressed in various nursing codes of ethics and regulatory bodies, but the meaning they hold for nurses and the impact they have on nursing education and practice remain unclear. Discussion and conclusion: This article discusses the relevance of conscience and conscientious objection to ethical nursing practice and proposes a model case to show how they can be appreciated in the context of nurses. Conscientious objection is an option for ethical transparency for nurses but is situated in contentious discussions over its use and has yet to be fully understood for nursing practice. Conscience is an element in need of more exploration in the context of conscientious objection. Further research is warranted to understand how nurses respond to conscience concerns in morally, pluralistic nursing contexts.

This thought was then tried to collide with diversity in Indonesia, especially the attitude of religious people when dealing with adherents of other religions. so that the moment of meeting with others truly becomes an ethical moment towards meeting, based on this attitude of responsibility. Based on library data, the author tries to describe the concept of levinas responsibility so that ultimately every difference can be seen as a gift and shared wealth. Through reflection on the unique concept of the responsibility of levinas, the authors put it as a foundation for the relations of religious life and Indonesian society, which often experience clashes due to pluralistic reasons. It is very appropriate, if Levinas's responsibilities are implied into the lives of our people because also the essence of Levinas's thinking actually has a strong foundation in our country's philosophy. Theory of religious markets is a field of study that employs the rational choice methodology to examine the effects of religious policies and regulations on religious beliefs and organizations. Theory of religious markets attributes the secularization trend in Western societies not to modernization but rather to the monopolization of religion and the eradication of competitive religious markets. In contrast to contemporary secularism theory, which excluded political analysis from sociology of religion, the theory of religious markets has reintroduced political analysis into sociology of religion and sparked a fruitful academic debate. By employing a supply-side approach instead of a demand-side approach, theory of religious markets has reintroduced secularization to the forefront of political science's principal topics. Specifically, it has reconnected it with the evolution of the impartial government and the notion of religious pluralism. This paper investigates how the debate between these two theories can contribute to the policies necessary for the institutionalization of pluralistic and liberal politics in Muslim-majority countries today. Due to its rational choice approach, the theory of religious markets makes significant contributions to the study of liberalization issues in Muslim-majority countries in the context of freedom of religion and conscience, apart from theological debates.

Toute éthique de l’intervention doit reconnaître qu’il n’existe rien comme « la » morale portée par une communauté morale homogène dans une société donnée,a fortioridans les sociétés pluralistes contemporaines. Cet article propose, dans un premier temps, que la complexité de l’analyse en éthique des interventions sociales découle de l’existence d’une pluralité de « moralités » (ex. : religieuses, institutionnelles, professionnelles, de sens commun), qui chacune propose des guides pour l’action morale susceptible d’entrer en conflit. En est mise en évidence une dimension politique de toute éthique : ces moralités sont portées par des groupes sociaux et ethniques inscrits dans des rapports asymétriques de pouvoir. Toute éthique de l’intervention devra être consciente du fait que le poids des valeurs et des normes morales soumises à l’arbitrage de l’intervenant dépend moins de leur valeur intrinsèque que du pouvoir de ceux qui en font la promotion. Il dépend aussi du processus sociohistorique de moralisation des habitudes de vie conduisant parfois à la stigmatisation des populations vulnérables, parfois à des croisades morales. L’une des responsabilités de toute éthique est donc de procéder à une analyse critique du poids accordé aux divers discours moraux inscrits dans ces rapports de force au sein des moralités et entre chacune d’elles. Il en va de même, particulièrement, pour les moralités ethniques et la question du respect des traditions.

C’est le travail autour du rêve d’une patiente en analyse qui illustrera ce point de vue. Pourront être repérés le transfert déformé des désirs et souvenirs inconscients dans le champ de la conscience et les transferts sur l’objet analyste qui peuvent être pluriels. Ces transferts reflètent l’actualisation du passé et de l’infantile mais aussi la structure de l’élaboration pulsionnelle dans son lien aux objets. Le but de cet article est de réévaluer l’impact du projet philosophique de Jean Wahl sur la philosophie française postmoderne. L’angle choisi consiste à replacer le projet wahlien dans le cadre des deux grands motifs de la philosophie française de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle: le rejet du paradigme dominant de la vision et le rapport ambivalent à l’hégélianisme, cristallisé dans la igure de la conscience malheureuse. En suivant ces deux fils conducteurs, l’article retrace le parcours intellectuel de Jean Wahl depuis sa thèse de doctorat sur les philosophies pluralistes angloaméricaines, en passant par sa réception de l’hégélianisme, pour le mettre en relation avec sa période la moins commentée, celle de l’introduction dans le paysage philosophique français des grands noms du roman moderniste américain de l’époque.The goal of this paper is to re-evaluate the impact of Jean Wahl’s philosophical project on French postmodern philosophy. To complete this task, it is necessary to put the Wahlian project into the context of the two major aims of 20th Century French philosophy: the rejection of ocularcentrism and the ambiguous relationship to Hegelianism characterized by the figure of the Unhappy Consciousness. Following these two threads, the article reconstructs Wahl’s intellectual journey from his Ph.D. on American pluralism to his reception of Hegelianism in order to connect them to his less known work, which consists of introducing American modernist writers into the French philosophical landscape.

IntroductionConscience is central to moral decision making. In the context of morally pluralistic workplaces today, healthcare professionals’ conscience may prompt them to make moral decisions to refrain from providing services they morally disagree with. However, such decisions are largely viewed as contentious, giving rise to polarising arguments for and against healthcare professionals’ freedom of conscience. Yet, little work has been done to understand and support healthcare professionals’ conscience. Instead, the rising polarity related to healthcare professionals’ freedom of conscience stems from a central lack of understanding of what conscience is and the relevance it holds for healthcare professionals’ clinical practice. Therefore, the degree and extent to which healthcare professionals are supported to understand and use their conscience is unknown. The objective of this review is to critically analyse the scholarly evidence available to ascertain the effectiveness of interventions that support healthcare professionals to understand and use their conscience in care practice.Methods and analysesAt least two reviewers will systematically review 10 interdisciplinary, scholarly databases to examine qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods studies including clinical trials pertaining to interventions related to conscience for healthcare professionals. Databases to be searched include: the Cochrane Controlled Register of Trials, Medline, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cumulative Index for Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Academic Search Complete, ATLA Religion Database, Religion and Philosophy Collection, PhilPapers and Scopus. Databases were searched in May 2021. Study screening, selection, extraction and risk of bias assessments on each study using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool will be independently conducted by independent reviewers. Descriptive data synthesis will be carried out. Statistical analysis and meta-analysis will be conducted as relevant, based on homogeneity of findings. The quality of the aggregate evidence will be assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations criteria.Ethics and disseminationEthical approval is not required for this review. This protocol will not involve individual patient information endangering participant rights. The results will be reported in a peer-reviewed journal and disseminated at conferences.PROSPERO registration numberCRD42021256943.

Yet numerous western countries also give cause for concern. Problems identified are stereotyping, vilification and hate speech; violence against people and objects; state control of religious practices; excluding religion from public life; and suppressing conscience, traditional Christian ethics and truth claims. Christian responses to such challenges include descriptive, legal and spiritual approaches, such as litigation, political lobbying and campaigning, cooperative strategies, intellectual engagement and attempts at shaping culture. Alors, transgresser, est-ce un moment de l’apprentissage, ou une mise en question, ou encore une condition de celui-ci ? La transgression est l’acte d’un sujet parlant, apprenant : je transgresse pour apprendre, expérimenter, comprendre… soit un projet ; ou je transgresse pour me protéger, me conformer à mon milieu, soit un refus. Transgression in the learnings: Uses and limits
Abstract: To transgress is to go beyond a limit, a rule that can either be social, educational or familial. There is a plurality of norms and sometimes conflicts, for example between nature and culture(s), school and family. Thus, it is a project. Or I transgress to protect myself, to comply with my environment: then, it is a refusal. The example of multilingual children shows how the transgression of a norm or that of another one can serve as an awareness or an indicator.

Spinoza’s bold, spirited defense of toleration is an animating theme of the Theological-Political Treatise (TTP) and an important reason for the significant historical impact of the text. But Spinoza’s arguments for toleration can be challenging to discern. True to its title, the TTP offers two main arguments for toleration, one political, the other theological. This paper argues that Spinoza’s theological argument for toleration is closely connected to a distinct and often overlooked argument from pluralism. This paper examines Spinoza’s argument from pluralism and defends that it is more attractive to similar arguments for toleration offered by Bodin and Bayle. It is more attractive than Bodin’s pluralism argument because Spinoza’s allows that religious beliefs and doctrines of faith have a rational justification, which makes possible a more optimistic picture of the prospects for religious disputation. Spinoza’s pluralism argument is also more attractive than Bayle’s argument because Spinoza’s does not regard religious beliefs as justified by sincerity, which means that he does not need to recognize any problematic rights of erroneous conscience, nor is he forced to accept as justified sincere beliefs in persecution or obviously immoral or irreligious beliefs.

Cette tradition est ancrée dans un univers où multilinguisme et traduction, en étroite interaction, contribuent à créer une "conscience traductive". Dans cet univers où une pluralité de langues se trouvent simultanément mobilisées, la traduction joue un rôle fondamental, véritablement proligère.

Cette investigation interroge la notion de langue et son image dans la conscience linguistique des sujets et conduit à poser la question de l’institution sociale de la langue. La langue commune, pluralisée et diversifiée dans le discours historique et linguistique, se double d’une référence à une langue normée, instituée par l’école, dont les effets ont été soulignés dans les travaux originaux de Renée Balibar. Nous finissons ainsi par une évocation des thèses de cet auteur, avec une mise en perspective de la langue normée, dans son rapport aux styles littéraires, avec la transposition des variations sociales dans la langue de la fiction. Mots clés: langue populaire; classe sociale; conscience linguistique; norme; institution.Abstract: The objective of this paper, exploring historical and (socio) linguistic texts, is to highlight how the discourse on the French language, its formation and function, is spanned by the idea of a social division constituting of a “popular language”, identified with a social class and devalued. This investigation questions the notion of language and its image in the linguistic conscience and it raises the problem of the social institution of language. The common language, pluralized and diversified in the historical and linguistic discourse, is doubled up as a standard language, established by school, whose effects have been pointed out in the original works of Renée Balibar. So we finally mention the thesis of this author and put the standard language in perspective, as it relates to literary styles, with the transposition of social variations in a fiction language.Keywords: Popular Language; Social Class; Linguistic Conscience; Norm; Institution.

Ying Chen, a Certain Way of Being in Languages
ABSTRACT: The language history of Ying Chen, a multilingual and itinerant French-speaking writer presents a certain way of being to languages. It reveals an inclusive approach to the appropriation of languages, a vision that brings together linguistic mobility and spatial mobility, new passages between languages and everyday life, between languages and writing. Through a selected corpus of the author’s texts, I want to show how the analysis of her language path can help to shed light on the processes of access to foreign languages with their discontinuity and detours. How stories of experience, through their reflexivity and subjectivity, promote awareness of plurality and otherness and are part of a process of decentralisation, of understanding oneself and the other.
RÉSUMÉ : L’histoire langagière de Ying Chen, écrivaine francophone plurilingue et itinérante présente une certaine manière d’être aux langues. Elle révèle une approche inclusive de l’appropriation des langues, une vision qui fait converger mobilité linguistique et mobilité spatiale, des passages inédits entre langues et vie quotidienne, entre langues et écriture. Au travers d’un corpus choisi de textes de l’auteure, je souhaite montrer comment l’analyse de son parcours langagier peut contribuer à éclairer les processus d’accès aux langues étrangères avec leur discontinuité et leurs détours. Comment les récits d’expérience, par leur réflexivité et leur subjectivité, favorisent la prise de conscience de la pluralité et de l’altérité et s’inscrivent dans une démarche de décentration, de compréhension de soi et de l’autre.

Mediante el análisis de tiempos históricos podemos constatar que el pluralismo jurídico ha dominado la mayor parte de las épocas. Aunque el derecho moderno inicialmente buscó centralizar el poder político y jurídico en el Estado-nación, con base en la supremacía de la ley y la igualdad formal de los ciudadanos; la necesaria búsqueda de justicia e igualdad material trae de vuelta el pluralismo jurídico dentro del Estado. Estudiar la presencia del pluralismo jurídico en nuestras sociedades es importante, porque en la práctica nos vamos a encontrar con diferentes cuerpos normativos que muchas veces no se coordinan y que se sobreponen. También, ser conscientes de la existencia de varios cuerpos normativos válidos nos ayuda a estar más abiertos a otras perspectivas, posibilitando el diálogo y la colaboración entre diversos órdenes normativos para la búsqueda de objetivos comunes.

The catastrophe and terror in the recent history of the Old Continent have precipitated unprecedented socio-political change witnessed, and experienced, by three generations of central-eastern Europeans. The collective political conscience of the continent was forged in the reconciliation of former belligerents, the dismantling of barriers assumed by newly broken alliances, and the construction of supranational structures of democracy. This required the work and sacrifice of a generation, living out shifting state ideologies; people who had to forego former prejudices and engage in a new, fluid dialogue, which had been formerly discouraged and repressed. Depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle jusqu’à 1918, la question des langues vernaculaires dans la Monarchie des Habsbourg devient un enjeu politique de plus en plus manifeste. Les études qui tentent de cerner le nombre de locuteurs des différentes langues en usage et leur localisation se multiplient, car la demande s’en fait sentir au sein de l’administration et du pouvoir politique. La statistique des langues cristallise la conscience d’une pluralité linguistique et impose de réfléchir à la gestion de cette pluralité depuis Vienne et Pest. L’étude comparée des travaux autrichiens et hongrois, centrée sur le cas de l’espace croate, met en lumière cette évolution, tout en présentant les particularités des approches autrichienne et hongroise (décalages chronologiques, rôle du pouvoir central, usage polémique des chiffres...). Ainsi, de 1780 à 1918, la statistique des langues se professionnalise (notamment grâce aux travaux de Karl von Czoernig et Adolph Ficker) et se politise en devenant la marque d’une appartenance nationale (Richard Boeckh), au rythme des divergences grandissantes entre Cisleithanie et Transleithanie.
