Analysis of natural convection in a horizontal slot formed by two corrugated isothermal plates has been carried out. The analysis is limited to subcritical Rayleigh numbers$Ra$where no secondary motion takes place in the absence of corrugations. The corrugations have a sinusoidal form characterized by the wavenumber, the upper and lower amplitudes and the phase difference. The most intense convection occurs for corrugation wavelengths comparable to the slot height; it increases proportionally to$Ra$and proportionally to the corrugation height. The aerodynamic effects of wing corrugation on insect flight have received widespread attention. However, there has hardly been any specific focus on dynamic changes to corrugation angle in the models. The flexible vein joints containing resilin in the wings of dragonflies and damselflies enable the longitudinal veins to rotate and thereby change the corrugation angles throughout flapping cycles. Therefore, a two-dimensional corrugated airfoil with time-varying corrugation angles is proposed and the aerodynamic performance is evaluated in terms of aerodynamic force, power and efficiency. The engineering of tubes with surface corrugations is recognized as an effective method for enhancing heat transfer within the tube. Yet the impact of surface corrugation on the flow and heat transfer around the tube’s exterior remains inadequately explored. Direct numerical simulation was used to study laminar and turbulent flows in circular pipes with smoothly corrugated walls. The corrugation wavelength was kept constant at $0.419D$, where $D$ is the mean diameter of the wavy-wall pipe and the corrugation height was varied from zero to $0.08D$. Flow rates were varied in steps between low values that generate laminar flow and higher values where the flow is in the post-transitional turbulent regime. This chapter discusses the effect of force and deformation of the tip apex and the sample surface in the operation and imaging mechanism of STM and AFM. Because the contact area is of atomic dimension, a very small force and deformation would generate a large measurable effect. Three effects are discussed. First is the stability of the STM junction, which depends on the rigidity of the material. For soft materials, hysterisis is more likely. For rigid materials, the approaching and retraction cycles are continuous and reproducible. Second is the effect of force and deformation to the STM imagi

The attractive and repulsive forces between the two gold spheres cause minute deformations near the tunneling gap, which is enough to produce a substantial effect. Coombs and Pethica (1985) reported that the apparent barrier height in STM could be much lower than the work function. Such an anomalously low apparent barrier height is due to a mechanical contact between the tip and the sample, which makes the z reading from the
