Streszczenie:
Reflecting the strong heritage of crystallographic research in Australia, we wish to present two of the public outreach projects that are underway down-under to celebrate International year of crystallography 2014. A project that is already up and running is Crystallography365 - Blogging a crystal structure a day at http://crystallography365.wordpress.com/. Gathering a group of, principally students and early career researchers based in Australia, each day during 2014 a different crystal structure will be presented and described. The goals of the project is to present the wide range of uses crystal structures have to a broad spectrum of sciences, and to provide an outlet for this group of scientists to engage with International Year of Crystallography. The other (hopefully bigger) project is Crystals in the city will run 9th-30 August 2014 (coinciding with National Science Week in Australia). A partnership between ANSTO and University of New South Wales, it will bring a public display of 10-15 person-size crystal structure models exhibited in cities around Australia. The goal is that the crystal structures will `reflect' their surroundings and instil pride among the public in the crystallographic achievements of Australian science. Accompanying the exhibition will be website, where the public can find more about each of the structures and students can learn of studying opportunities. The project will also unite a host of supporters and sponsors; universities, museums and crystallographic groups.

Streszczenie:
Throughout World War II, the belligerent countries took enemy civilians, as well as soldiers, prisoner. The majority of the camps created to hold these prisoners were located in the European and Asian theaters of battle, but the United States operated prisoner of war camps and civilian internment camps as well. American internment camps, administered by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), imprisoned persons from the Axis countries of Japan, Italy, and Germany, deemed a threat to national security and categorized as a group as “enemy aliens.” Generally, these individuals were not threats, and a sizable number were legal U.S. citizens. Crystal City Internment Camp, located in Crystal City, Texas, interned individuals from all three enemy national backgrounds and allowed entire families to reside with the arrested family member. This research will attempt to highlight the daily experience of the internees in the Crystal City Internment Camp through internees’ oral histories and official camp reports, with a focus specifically on the German prisoners. Although scholars have examined these internment camps, little attention has been given to daily life in these camps.

Streszczenie:
Crystal City, Texas has been a part of the Chicano Movement narrative since the beginning. Crystal City High School like others across the United States held walkouts to protest the lack of respect for the Mexican American culture and for civil rights for Mexican Americans in schools. Crystal City is also the home to one of the original Raza Unida Parties. This rich history has placed Crystal City in a unique position in Chicano history. This study draws from Chicana Feminist epistemology, methodology, and scholarship to disrupt the meta-narrative that is and has been told of the Chicano Movement, and more specifically about Crystal City and its part in the Movement. By creating a counter narrative that is woman centered, this dissertation seeks to disrupt the binary of good/bad views of the Chicano Movement. This is done through the use of oral histories and testimonios of four women who were not directly in the spotlight of the Chicano Movement. This dissertation then briefly examines what stories our four women shared with their youngest child. This was done to investigate what the author has experienced with younger generations of Cristaleños. The experiences can best be described as disillusionment of the Chicano Movement. The major components of this dissertation are the stories the four participants share about the Chicano Movement in Crystal City, Texas. These stories are personal and touching in a way that showcases the use of Chicana Feminist methodology and disrupts the meta-narrative of the Chicano Movement and the binary of the views of the Movement.

“Taipei People” and “Grystal Boys” are the two most important literatures from Pai Hsien-yung Because of the instability of the era, Pai Hsien-yung has a unique life experience. This causes Pai Hsien-yung to reflect the vanishing and changing of “time and space” in his novels, whether he was building the emotions or creating the arrangement of ideas. These all originate from his constant changing of life experience in respect of “time and space.” Thus, this thesis will begin with Pai Hsien-yung’s life experience. From there, we will investigate the reasons why Pai Hsien-yung was so conscious of “time and space” in his novels. Besides the influence of his unique life experience, “Taipei People” and “Grystal Boys” also have a very close connection with the status identification in respect to “time and space”. Therefore, after understanding the reasons why Pai Hsien-yung has shown concerns of “time and space,” we will turn our attention to how the status identification has influenced the creation and existence of “time and space” in “Taipei People” and “Grystal Boys.” Because the characters in “Taipei people” are mostly restricted to the status identification in the “past” and they can’t forget their time in China, so when they are forced to move to Taiwan, they are still stuck with their past memory of dreamland. Thus, the status identification from the “past” in “Taipei People” is from the “time” perspective and the stage of “space” in this novel is also setup for the time in the past. On the other hand, different from “Taipei People”, where the status identification is limited to the “past,” the existence of wandering between time and space and exiling from family to country in “Grystal Boys” is coming from the characters’ own “homosexuality” status. Because of the homosexuality status in “Grystal Boys,” the “time” becomes ambiguous and the “space” is vanished. Between banished from the family and exiled from the country, time and space are suppressed forcefully. The most important reason of changing in time and space is coming from not be able to identify by other people, not because of self-identified. Because the characters in “Taipei People” can never forget their younger years in China, the so-called “Taipei People” are exiled between time and space. This causes them to deny both Taipei and China. Therefore, “Taipei” or Taipei “People” pronounces absence in the present of “existence” in respect to the status identification. Contrarily, the next generation of “Taipei People,” “Grystal Boys”, based on the unique family tree, expression style of passions, and banishing between time and space, reveals the real vitality of the regional space of Taipei. Through narration, people become the ideal world, collective memories and individual feelings in the space structure. These collective memories and individual feelings are the main reasons to cause for the status identification. It’s obvious that the characters in “Taipei People” and “Grystal Boys,” drifting and banishing in time and space, have a very close connection with the status identification. The mutual influence between these two novels is inseparable. Thus, this thesis will compare “Taipei People” and “Grystal Boys” and provide an in-depth analysis of the inter-relationship between status identification and time and space.

Streszczenie:
This chapter is about the minerals based on silicon and oxygen, the silicates, the ones that make siliceous rocks. And because this means most rocks, apart from limestone and the other calcareous materials, they are often referred to as the “rock- forming minerals.” Let’s be clear at the outset that with these siliceous rocks we’re talking about silicate compounds, which involve the element silicon and a subgroup of silica minerals, which we’ll come to at the end of the chapter. None of this has anything to do with silicone, the synthetic polymer of multifarious uses. The principles discussed here are the same as those developed in the previous chapter, but the silicates present special challenges. Indeed, for a long time they were very tricky things to understand at all. The early geologists had at their disposal new ways of chemically analyzing minerals, and they applied them with gusto. They made impressively rapid progress, but they were baffled by the silicates. Their analyses showed that these minerals were dominated by silicon and oxygen but beyond that, well, they seemed too numerous, wildly varied, and inconsistent. It turned out to be well into the twentieth century before there was a breakthrough in understanding these perplexing compounds. The breakthrough took place when it dawned that X- rays could be used to study the structure of crystals—any crystals: geological, metallurgical, biological, and so on. Today, over twenty Nobel prizes have been awarded for work in this field, most recently in 2012. It’s even relevant to wine itself, through elucidating the structure of enzymes, proteins, and the like. (Incidentally, the use of X-rays to analyze crystals is quite different from its use in producing the familiar X-ray pictures of the human body.) In July 1912, the Bragg family rented a house, Whin Brow, at Cloughton, high above England’s Yorkshire coast. The father of the family, William, was a Professor of Physics at Leeds, and his 22-year-old son, Lawrence, was a precocious physics student at Cambridge. With an impending war, they were eager to escape the grimness of city life for a while, but even so, William took some work with him.

Streszczenie:
The United States Navy’s Coastal Systems Station (CSS) - Panama City, Florida has developed an Integrated Diver Display Mask (IDDM) system for special diving applications. The IDDM contains a miniature liquid crystal display (LCD) panel, multi-element optics, microcontroller, depth transducer, RF (radio frequency) receiver, replaceable battery, and controlling software – all built directly into a dive mask. The miniature LCD displays the diver’s depth, bottom time, and bottle pressure. In addition, the display has a number of annunciators that are illuminated when certain warning, or limit conditions are reached (i.e. ascent/descent rate too fast, low bottle pressure, or low battery). The multi-element optical lens provides a clear, highly magnified image of the LCD which is viewable regardless of environmental conditions. A commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) RF transmitter module transmits the diver’s bottle pressure to the mask. The system is operational to depths of 135 FSW. The IDDM Project was funded by the Office of Special Technology (EOD/LIC Program), Ft. Washington, Maryland. It was conducted as a joint-development project under a Cooperative Research And Development Agreement (NCRADA - NSWCCSS-98-015) between the US Navy’s Coastal Systems Station of Panama City, Florida; and American Underwater Products, Inc. (parent company of Oceanic USA and Pelagic Pressure Systems) of San Leandro, California. The paper will describe the development of the IDDM system and suggest military, scientific, and other special applications for this unique diving technology.
