Streszczenie:
Mobile learning brings the opportunity to do practices and activities anywhere in our daily life. However learning for expertise requires more than daily activities, it requires deliberate practices. Different than daily activities and practices, deliberate practices are specific and well designed activities for gradually gaining and improving expertise with the help of teacher led feed-backs. This paper introduces the use of deliberates practices on a mobile learning environment. This paper describes the system design and applications including both teacher and student side of the mobile learning environment. The teacher side consists of a management module for the learning objects pool creation and student monitoring. Student side consists of a content pulling module for deliberate practices and a self and personalized learning monitoring system. This paper would be helpful for teachers and instructional designers and mobile learning platform designers to understand the mechanisms behind the design practices for the notion of deliberate practices.

Contrary to most current epistemologists who concentrate on core cases of rather 'spontaneous' (deliberately de-contextualized) trust and belief in the face of assertions, Classical rhetoricians addressed the study of 'testimony' as an (at least) two-acts phenomenon: that of the 'disclosure' of information and that of the 'appeal' to its authority in subsequent discursive practices. Moreover, they primarily focused on this second phase as they assumed that it was such argumentative setting that finally gave 'testimonial' relevance to the first act. According to this 'rhetorical' model, then, it is the dynamics (by means of an in medias res approach) and pragmatics (by means of a deliberate attention to specifically 'situated' practices) of such complex process that is the core issue regarding 'testimony'.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the extent to which implementation of evidence-based practices affects emergency department (ED) nurse managers’ perceptions of quality of care provided to deliberate self-harm patients. METHODS: ED nursing leadership from a nationally representative sample of 513 hospitals completed a survey on the ED management of deliberate self-harm patients, including the quality of care for deliberate self-harm patients on a 1 to 5 point Likert-type scale. Unadjusted and adjusted analyses, controlling for relevant hospital characteristics, examined associations between the provision of evidence-based practices and quality of care. RESULTS: The overall mean quality rating was 3.09. Adjusted quality ratings were higher for EDs that routinely engaged in discharge planning (β = 0.488) and safety planning (β = 0.736) processes. Ratings were also higher for hospitals with higher levels of mental health staff (β = 0.368) and for teaching hospitals (β = 0.319). CONCLUSION: Preliminary findings suggest a national institutional readiness for further implementation of evidence-based practices for deliberate self-harm patients.

Many scientific publications pointed out delays in the progress of payments by owners as one of the top direct causes of project delays and disputes. This research investigates the causes of payment delays and explores deliberate delay tactics and their reasons within Saudi Arabian public construction projects. This research employs a robust mixed methodology, an extensive literature review, and preliminary semi-structured interviews to identify the causes of payment delays and possible tactics and reasons for deliberate delays or procrastinated payment. Subsequently, a questionnaire survey is distributed among experienced personnel. The survey aims to verify the results of the first phase, assess occurrence rates of the causes of payment delays, study tactical forms used by parties to delay payment, and identify reasons for such practices. The findings of the study reveal that the contractual issues group has the highest score for occurring, deliberate disruptions occur although they are not prevalent, tactics to deliberate delays exist and are practiced, and all the possible forms of deliberate delays under investigation and reasons for deliberate delays are confirmed valid. This study provides valuable insights for businesses and policymakers seeking to comprehend the issue of payment delays in Saudi Arabian public construction projects.

Purpose Organizations learn semi-automatically through experience or consciously through deliberate learning efforts. As there seems to be a “black-box” in the possible linkages between deliberate learning and new practice implementation, this paper aims to develop and test a process model, linking deliberate learning and new practice implementation through complementary competencies of task and environmental flexibility. Design/methodology/approach As part of a field study, health-care improvement program (to transfer the improvement training program for new practice implementation) of 186 HCUs was used for testing our hypothesis. In addition to descriptive statistics, multiple hierarchical regressions and bootstrapping were used to test the study hypotheses. Findings Findings suggest that deliberate learning is positively and significantly related with new practice implementation, and dynamic capabilities in the form of task and environmental flexibility mediates this relationship. Research limitations/implications The present study makes theoretical and practical contributions by linking literature from new practice, organizational learning and dynamic capabilities; and by delving into the deliberate learning activities undertaken by health-care units. Originality/value Organizational learning in health care has almost become inevitable today due to the ever-changing dynamics of the industry. Barring handful of studies, the current state of literature is almost entirely tilted towards experience-based learning and deliberate learning is not well studied. To address this gap, the study aims to develop and test a process model linking development of dynamic capabilities with deliberate learning and new practice implementation. Further, findings of this study will help organizations and managers to understand and thereby effectively manage new practice implementation process through the use of deliberate activities.

Background Deliberate self-poisoning by ingesting pesticides is a serious health problem among farmers, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Preventing these suicides is a priority for a public mental health agenda. Objective To examine the role of pesticide poisoning in suicide and nonfatal deliberate self-harm, and clarify awareness of risks, safe practices concerning storage and use of pesticides, and associated self-injury, both unintentional and intentional, within farmer households of the Sundarban region, India. Methods Retrospective record review of adult cases of deliberate self-poisoning at the Block Primary Health Centres of 13 Sundarban Blocks was performed to analyze the relative roles of various methods of self-harm and their lethality. Focus group discussions, questionnaires, and in-depth interviews were undertaken in a community study of farmer households to examine pesticide-related views and practices, with particular attention to storage, use, and health impact. Results Pesticide poisoning was the most common method of deliberate self-harm in both men and women. Pesticide storage in most households was unsafe and knowledge was inadequate concerning adverse effects of pesticides on health, crops, and the environment. Conclusions An intersectoral approach linking the interests of public health, mental health, and agriculture is well suited to serve the collective interests of all three agendas better than each in isolation. Such an approach is needed to reduce morbidity and mortality from unintentional and intentional self-injury in low-income agricultural communities like those of the Sundarban region.

People’s Housing requirements commonly transition over time, and there are financial, social and environmental impacts associated with altering and moving houses. With possible future alteration in mind, this paper looks at the viability of deliberately incorporating flexibility into houses at the time they are designed and built, as compared with no specifically incorporated flexibility (yet still possibly capable of being altered). A comparative analysis, rather than an absolute analysis, is outlined. The financial viability is performed as an options analysis, while the social and environmental matters are evaluated along life cycle assessment lines. As a case example, the paper considers the viability of incorporating deliberate two-storey flexibility into a single-storey house using Australian practices. It is shown on the case example that incorporating deliberate built-in flexibility can perform positively against all sustainability criteria – financial, social and environmental, separately or combined – however the generality of this conclusion remains to be proven.

AbstractThe aim of this paper is to determine whether Australian SMEs could be characterised as ‘deliberate’ or ‘emergent’ in their strategic approaches. More specifically, surveying 1230 Australian SMEs, this paper focuses on answers to the following questions: What is the nature and prevalence of strategic practices in Australian SMEs? and to what extent does firm size differentiate the patterning and prevalence of strategic practices? The findings add to the little empirical research showing the principal activities and tools that comprise the strategic practices undertaken in Australian SMEs. Overall, and in both small and medium enterprises respectively, strategic thinking and action seem to be undertaken with the use of a framework of a written business plan which is in line with the ‘deliberate’ approach; however few sophisticated strategy making techniques were employed. Researchers and practitioners may find it valuable to develop tools that will naturally suit SME firms so that these tools can be of more value. Academics and tertiary institutions will be well advised to develop strategic management courses which also specifically focus on more emergent approaches designed for smaller firms including specially developed techniques and tools that are less time-consuming and expensive to use and more suited to smaller firms. This would enable SMEs to expand the range of strategy making tools they employ.

Streszczenie:
The aim of this thesis was to examine how experts learn using the theory of deliberate practice. Expert and intermediate Gaelic football players practiced kicking, with their learning being assessed between a pre-test and retention test. A novel method to measure the tenets of deliberate practice during the activity, as opposed to retrospectively, was used throughout the thesis. Findings support previous research on the mechanisms and strategies engaged in by experts as they aim to improve performance and how they differ to lesser-skilled individuals. In line with the theory of deliberate practice, in Chapter 2 and 3 the experts rated practice higher for effort and lower for enjoyment, as well as practicing a more relevant skill in Chapter 2, when compared to intermediates. Moreover, they improved kicking accuracy between pre-test and retention test, whereas the intermediate group did not. In addition, the thesis identified differences between the cognitive mechanisms of experts and intermediates that underpin their respective performance. Expert groups engaged in greater cognitive processing during (Chapter 2 and 3) and between (Chapter 3) practice sessions when compared to intermediates. Chapter 4 examined the impact of applying these expert cognitive processes to the deliberate practice and performance of a youth intermediate group. A training group practiced kicking with an intervention designed to increase cognitive processing, whereas a control group practiced kicking without intervention. Findings support previous research by providing evidence of the outcome of such an intervention on deliberate practice. The training group demonstrated greater cognitive effort and less enjoyment during practice and greater improvements in accuracy after practice compared to the control group. Overall, findings in this thesis support the theory of deliberate practice and extend the research on the role of cognitive processing in effective skill acquisition.

Alves, Ballón Tedesqui Rafael. "Personality, Deliberate Practice, and Expertise Development in Sport." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/38702.

Streszczenie:
Conscientiousness-related personality traits are relevant predictors of many outcomes in achievement domains outside sport. They have also been associated with several outcomes in sport, however, their relative role on athletes’ deliberate practice (DP) and other criteria of expertise development has not been investigated. The overall aim of this dissertation was to examine the role of conscientiousness-related traits on sport expertise development. It had six specific purposes: (a) to examine the structural validity of conscientiousness-related measures; (b) to understand whether athletes’ DP amounts, skill level, and other criteria of expertise development could be predicted by these measures; (c) to identify the best personality predictor and combination of predictors that explained the maximal variance in different criteria of expertise development; (d) to examine whether grit facets predicted athletes’ practice engagement across a demanding sport season; (e) to explore coaches’ perspectives on the behavioural indicators of conscientious, gritty, and self-controlled athletes in training; and (f) to explore coaches’ views about how these personality traits may impact athletes’ quantity and quality of practice and development toward higher skill levels. The dissertation used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, wherein Phase 1 (Articles 1, 2, and 3) quantitatively pursued purposes (a) to (c), Phase 2 (Article 4) addressed (d), and Phase 3 (Article 5) qualitatively addressed (e) and (f). Article 1 tested the factor structure of the Brief Self-Control Scale in sport and showed distinct associations between self-control variables and (a) sport-specific practice amounts, (b) engagement in various practice contexts, and (c) threats to commitment to one’s sport, in a diverse sport sample. Article 2 conducted factor analyses of the Grit Scale in sport and examined a full latent variable model showing associations between grit variables and several criteria of expertise development. In particular, perseverance of effort associated with athletes’ weekly amounts of DP, engagement in different practice contexts, and skill level, while consistency of interests associated with athletes’ commitment to their sport. Article 3 comprised two studies. In Study 1, path analyses were used to assess the role of conscientiousness on criteria of expertise development. At the broad level, conscientiousness predicted athletes’ engagement in practice contexts and commitment to their sport; at the facet-level, achievement-striving was the best predictor of athletes’ weekly DP and engagement in practice contexts. The systematic test of the role of self-control (Article 1), grit (Article 2), and conscientiousness (Article 3, Study1) for key criteria of expertise development culminated with Study 2 of Article 3, which reported comparative analyses of the predictive ability of self-control, grit, and conscientiousness facets—which had shown to be significant predictors when assessed separately—for the criterion measures of sport expertise. Study 2 showed that (a) perseverance of effort was the best predictor of athletes’ weekly DP, engagement in mandatory practice, and the only predictor of higher skill level, (b) achievement-striving best predicted athletes’ engagement in optional practice, and (c) consistency of interests best predicted athletes’ commitment to their sport. Article 4 tested whether athletes’ self-reported levels of grit (broad and facets) were longitudinally associated with their coach-reported practice engagement throughout one sport season. Perseverance of effort was the grit variable most related to indicators of practice engagement, the only variable related to overall practice engagement across three time points, and the only variable marginally associated with athletes’ stability of practice engagement over time. Article 5 explored coaches’ views about the behavioural indicators of athletes’ conscientiousness, grit, and self-control in the daily training environment and how these traits impacted athletes’ training and development. Coaches described (a) conscientious athletes as systematic and detail-oriented, highly considerate of others, and highly engaged in self-regulation; (b) gritty athletes as those who persevere despite adversity and work hard in practice; and (c) self-controlled athletes as those who control impulses, resist temptations, and delay gratification. Coaches believe grit, conscientiousness, and self-control play important roles on athletes’ development toward higher skill levels, but results generally highlighted the preponderance of perseverance of effort. Potential mechanisms (e.g., conscientiousness—self-regulation—practice quality and conscientiousness—self-regulation—skill level) were highlighted to help explain the personality-expertise link found in Phases 1 and 2. This dissertation contributed to the literature on sport expertise by parsimoniously identifying conscientiousness-related personality traits that were associated with measures of athletes’ practice quantity, quality, and stability, commitment to sport, and higher skill level. Although several facets (i.e., perseverance of effort, consistency of interests, achievement-striving, self-discipline, and dutifulness) showed associations with practice and performance-related outcomes, this dissertation generally highlighted the role of grit facets. In particular, while perseverance of effort was the best predictor of athletes’ amounts of DP, the only grit variable associated with quality practice engagement over time, and the only predictor of higher skill level, consistency of interests was the best predictor of commitment variables. Furthermore, results based on coaches’ descriptions (a) provided behavioural indicators of conscientiousness-related traits that serve as reference points for practitioners aiming to help athletes develop desirable traits, (b) suggested that gritty athletes ‘work hard’ and conscientious athletes ‘work smart’, and (c) proposed mechanisms to explain the personality-expertise link found in the quantitative studies. Taken together, the results of this dissertation suggest that the tendency to persevere despite adversity and mindfully use self-regulated processes seems to be a powerful predisposition for athletes’ development toward expert levels of performance.

Hayman, Rick. "The role of deliberate practice in developing adolescent golfing excellence." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2012. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/6652/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The acquisition of expert performance has been studied for decades across a range of human performance domains. Ericsson, Krampe, and Tesch-Römer (1993) proposed a theoretical framework termed the theory of deliberate practice to account for the characteristics and developmental experiences of individuals who acquire exceptional levels of performance in any discipline. This theory proposes that acquiring expertise across any domain is the result of undertaking an extensive acquisition period of approximately ten years involving the accumulation of thousands of hours of physically and mentally demanding practice regimes whilst overcoming effort, motivational and resource constraints that serve as barriers to the attainment of elite performance. Therefore, this thesis aimed to contribute to the under researched area of golf development systems by examining the applicability of deliberate practice theory in acquiring elite male adolescent golfer status. The first study, of four, utilised self-report diary logs to reveal the durations, types and intensities of golf activities undertaken by nine aspiring elite adolescent golfers over a nine month period and compared actual and retrospective accounts. In total, 62 percent of all golf activities were classified as either golf competitions or competitive practice rounds undertaken with high amounts of physical and mental effort and fun. This approach to development was beneficial for lowering the golf handicaps of several participants. Results reveal the performance improvements which aspiring elite adolescent golfers experienced whilst engaging with regular golf competitions and practice rounds instead of deliberate practice specific activities. However, such improvements did plateau once performers reached a handicap approaching two. Retrospective recall was also revealed as an accurate method to determine volumes and conditions of golf activities undertaken over a nine month period. Non-significant differences were revealed between actual and recalled data (training volumes p = 0.94, physical effort p = 0.83, mental effort p = 0.44, and fun p = 0.13) and effect sizes were small ranging (d = 0.03 – 0.31) The second study retrospectively examined the sports participation and practice trends of current elite adolescent male English golfers. It was found how these individuals tended not to participate within golf specific deliberate practice regimes until the mid-teenage years and instead encountered a diversified introduction to several sports, which included golf, within a playful, fun, non-competitive environment that resembled key tenets of deliberate play theory (Côté, 1999). A change in emphasis towards on-going golf development occurred around the age of 16 when exposure with golf specific deliberate practice became more evident once participants had gained selection for county and English Golf Union representative golf teams. The third study used interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore the experiences of golfers who had all successfully travelled the path from novice to elite adolescent golfer status. Four super-ordinate themes emerged from participants accounts which revealed how elite adolescent golfers experienced supportive parents and a diversified enjoyable introduction to a range of sports. This was followed by a self-determined commitment to golf in the mid teenage years and a strategic approach to developing excellence which recognised the important role that psychology may play post 16 years of age. The forth study aimed to discover if the introduction of a golf specific deliberate practice intervention would improve putting performance and influence future practice behaviours of five aspiring elite adolescent golfers who had no prior experience of specialised golf training protocols. Participants completed a 13 week AB single-subject multiple-baseline design, social validation measures and five month follow up interviews. Mean putting performance was significantly higher (t4 = 6.94, p = .002, d = 3.12) in the intervention phase (M = 6.20, SD = 0.51) than the baseline phase (M = 4.64, SD = 0.57). All participants enjoyed undertaking deliberate practice, experienced a range of psychological and technical improvements, adapted current training schedules to mirror deliberate practice and committed long term to activities of this nature. In conclusion, the findings of the four empirical studies within this thesis suggest long term deliberate practice is not a pre-requisite throughout childhood and the early teenage years for securing selection within international adolescent golf squads. However, engagement in deliberate practice post 16 years of age was found to be an important training strategy for the continued performance development of emerging and elite level adolescent golfers. The pathway to elite adolescent status more closely resembled Côté’s (1999) deliberate play theory with sampling during early childhood, specialising during early teenage years, and investment in later teenage years. The collective findings of this thesis may provide players, coaches, applied sport psychologists and policy makers involved within golf talent development systems with clearer insights into conditions of participation and practice that appear optimal for achieving adolescent golfing excellence.

Bridging the gap between classroom learning and nursing practice is an ongoing concern in nursing education. Multiple studies have found that students who are provided the knowledge, skills and modeling behavior, in addition to an expectation of efficacy, have an increase in their confidence of acquired skills and thus an increase in self-confidence and competence. However, patients in acute care settings have increasingly complex medical problems, which often leave nursing students with minimal hands-on care for their assigned patient. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of deliberate practice, using a repeated simulated clinical experience, on student self-confidence and competency. A quantitative method with a descriptive, non-experimental, pre-test-posttest study provided information about the effect of a repeated simulated clinical experience on student self-confidence and competence. A convenience sample of 26 nursing students from a university located in central Pennsylvania enrolled in their junior year medical-surgical course participated. Self-confidence was measured using the National League for Nursing (NLN) Self-Confidence in Learning with Simulation self-reporting instrument prior to experiencing the simulation and then immediately following the initial and repeated simulation. Competence with nursing skills using simulation was measured using the Creighton Competency Evaluation Instrument (CCEI) for both the initial simulation and the repeated simulation. Parametric statistics and a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) indicated a statistical significance for overall improvement in competence following the repeated scenario, p = 0.001. There was no statistical significance in improvement of student self-confidence. The findings of this study suggest that repetition of a simulation scenario promoted an increase in overall competence and support incorporating deliberate practice of simulation scenarios.

Practice has the potential to transform a musician’s expertise by elevating technical and musical limitations to full competence, allowing a musician to play masterfully at a professional level (Ericsson, Krampe, & Tesch-Römer, 1993; Johnston, 2002; Sloboda, Davidson, Howe, & Moore, 1996). While the research literature underlines some pedagogical and psychological principles on how to practise, there is a need to identify strategies, inspirations, thoughts, and artistic behaviours that will lead to practice mastery and excellence in performance (Cervion, Laws, Lettberg, & Lisboa, 2012; Gerle, 1983; Miksza, 2007). To date, most of the studies related to effective practice have been conducted with students in higher education (Hallam, 2001). This research aims to evaluate how professional performers conceptualise and approach practice, and to observe how they are able to make practice theory meaningful. Six performance experts participated in an interview regarding practice. The interviews explored how the participants address and structure practice, how they handle obstacles, and how they prepare for performances. The participants discussed the importance of mental preparation, and unanimously described the value of mental practice in the learning of new works. For these performers, practice was never the ultimate objective, only a means to achieve progress in performance and to convey to an audience the delivery of art. This study aims to redefine existing practice concepts by appraising musicians and pedagogues of current expert approaches and demonstrating how these are implemented. It will identify how knowledge of theory needs to be enacted to experience expert practice mastery. These findings will benefit and advance pre-professional performers in their pursuit of excellence in performance as they prepare for the music profession.

Streszczenie:
Demanding policy issues require responses that are both effective and legitimate. Wicked problems are examples of such demanding issues. In contrast to tame policy issues, wicked problems can be distinguished when levels of uncertainty, value divergence, and complexity reach high levels. Examples of wicked problems include issues such as climate change, illicit drug use, and indigenous disadvantage. This thesis puts forward the case for using deliberative democratic practices (in conjunction with typical policy development methods) when working with wicked problems. Deliberative democracy aims to promote greater legitimacy in decisions as a result of public consultation. Deliberative democracy can create better outcomes as a result of rigorous engagement and deliberation over a topic, and more inclusion in the political process for those groups who have typically found themselves alienated from politics. Such aims and principles lend themselves to good policy development. Typical policy development methods may not be sufficiently flexible to devise effective and long lasting solutions to wicked problems. By using deliberative practices in conjunction with typical policy development methods, the policy process becomes more flexible and adaptive to work with the ever-changing nature of a wicked problem. The principles and aims of deliberative democracy can make wicked problems appear more manageable by creating legitimacy in decisions as a result of public consultation, bridge the gap between different parties’ value divergence, and possibly even change the mind of participants in the deliberation by invoking thought and reason.

The present research aimed at investigating perspectives of deliberation in piano practice according to the levels of expertise, since the consulted literature supports this subject in polarized at extreme levels and leaves a gap in the discussion about the practice of intermediate levels among those proposed in the literature of cognitive psychology, namely: novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient and the expert. Based on the phenomenological principles of E. Husserl (1900-1970), the methodological designed involved preliminary sample mapping, in which 18 participants (at university extension, undergraduate, graduate and professional levels) recorded in audio and video one practice session of two musical works from their repertoire and participated in two semi-structured interviews. Four representative cases at different levels of expertise were selected and analyzed in depth by qualitative procedures (phenomenological perspective) and quantitative ones (by descriptive and inferential statistics). For the description of the phenomenon of practice, units of practice were delimited, and in these, the essences of the phenomenon investigated denominated psychosensorial categories (testing, repeating, isolating, adjusting, alternating, stopping, exploring, dispersing and lapsing). These categories made up the framework in which the incidences (in terms of actions, deviations and procedures) were compiled and organized, resulting in ways of practicing both common to all participants and others peculiar to each investigated one. The perspectives of deliberation were identified and refined in a more specific dimension to the phenomenon of piano practice as an indication of commitment in and for the practice situation regarding intentionality at the studied phenomenon. Such perspectives resulted in the proposition of a model, which considers the limits of the focus of attention, the actions of the practice on the nature and the dynamic mobility of psychosensorial categories, and possible resulting factors from a given intensification of undertaken actions. The argument of the present thesis is that deliberation in piano practice is not a constant, but it is a dynamic perspective that occurs to each unit of practice from the intentionality of subjects towards the musical works practiced.

Doctor of Philosophy
Department of Curriculum and Instruction
Frederick Burrack
The purpose of this research is to discover influences that guide practice habits of collegiate instrumental music students, explore student self-discovery of practice needs, and create strategies that can be used to improve the quality of students’ individual music practice. To best address these intentions, three unique yet sequential studies were implemented. The Discovery study focused on the uncovering prior experiences that shaped students’ practice habits before entering college to get an idea of how current practice habits were formed. The Video Self-Confrontation study had participants watch a video recording of a practice sessions to address possible gaps between their perception and the reality of their practice habits. The video self-confrontation prompted discussion about possibilities for enhanced practice skills. The Intervention study expanded upon information from previous studies to develop and administer personalized interventions designed to address weaknesses and identify effect on participants’ practice habits. Independent practice, the time after instruction when a student works toward mastery of skills or concepts, is widely recognized as a critical component of improvement in the performance music. These studies aim to help bridge the gap between practice theories and optimal experiences. These studies explored elements related to practice behavior. Because each person had unique experiences and diverse ways to describe their experiences, a methodology for each study was required that allowed for structured data collection and organization. As such, the constructivist paradigm supported these studies.

AbstractThis Introduction outlines the structure of the book as it surveys contemporary Irish theatre from 1957 to the present in a two-part structure. Part I: Histories, situates the theatrical activity of twentieth- and twenty-first-century Ireland within its social and political contexts, identifies key practitioners, landmark productions, institutions, festivals and seminal revivals. Part II: Theories, offers five key theoretical frameworks—nation, language, body, space and interculturalism—to examine contemporary Irish theatre practices in the Republic and Northern Ireland. The deliberate decentralising of the play text and playwright as the most important nodal points for understanding the progression of contemporary Irish theatre is argued and the decision to foreground the contributions of artistic directors, scenographers, actors, directors, activists and administrators justified.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Austenitic stainless steels for non-magnetic drill collars (NMDC) may be susceptible to precipitation of Cr-rich phases at grain-boundaries during the necessary thermo-mechanical processing. This condition, known as sensitization, is detrimental to resistance to localized corrosion, stress-corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue. API Specification 7-1 requires testing these materials for sensitization according to ASTM A262 Practice E. However, Practice E is considered incapable of discriminating sensitized microstructures in some NMDC grades. This led some users to rely on Practice A for rejection of material, an application that is outside its original scope. To find an alternative sensitization test method, results from ASTM A262 practices A, B, and E, ASTM G48 Method A, Charpy impact tests, critical pitting temperature, and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization tests were compared on two NMDC grades in the warm-worked, annealed and deliberately sensitized conditions. The unreliability of Practice E has been confirmed, while ASTM G48 Method A has shown promise as an effective test method. The latter also has the advantages of being quantitative and relevant to service conditions in oil and gas drilling.

Abstract Metal dusting failure of an UNS N06600 (alloy 600) component in the neck section of a secondary methane reformer, and the subsequent catastrophic failure of the reformer shell, in a plant that converts natural gas to synthetic fuels was previously described. Plant experience with this high temperature degradation mechanism appears to contradict most published data on the topic in that the chromium-nickel-iron alloy UNS N08810 (Alloy 800H) has been found to vastly out-perform the high nickel UNS N06600 (Alloy 600) in this specific process environment. An alloy exposure program was initiated in order to try to gain a greater understanding of the practical limitations of metallic materials to this environment. Both high chromium-nickel-iron and nickel-base alloys were exposed. Results from this 6 month exposure suggests that increasing resistance could be achieved with increasing chromium content. Alloying additions of aluminum appears to be ineffective when the alloy oxide layer is deliberately destroyed. Results with an eutectic 50%Cr-50%Ni thermal sprayed coating were encouraging and may provide metal dusting resistance provided that the application deficiencies can be overcome.

Streszczenie:
Cultural journalism is a sub-field of journalism characterized by specific knowledge and education required from the journalists working as both reporters and reviewers and often close interaction with arts and cultural industries. The importance of cultural journalism lies in its role of providing for society a self-reflective discourse describing values and modeling patterns of behaviour and thought through journalistic practices such as reporting and reviewing on everyday culture and arts. However, the role of cultural journalism in the context of contemporary media environment is deminishing. This pushes for finding of new models of work in this field that at the same time puts under question professional identity of those working in cultural journalism. Until now cultural journalism is an underresearched domain in journalism studies, especially, from the media management and economics as well as work organisations/conditions point of view. This paper contributes to the reseatch on the roles and identity of cultural journalism focusing on exactly these aspects of journalistic practice. The purpose of this paper is to explore flexible working models in the field of cultural media in Latvia in connection with reflection of professional role and corporate identity. To achieve this, 12 in depth interviews were conducted with editors and journalists of Latvian media companies. The findings show that professionals interviewed see the goal of their professional activity broader, often combining their role in journalism with other roles in the field of culture. They can more or less be aware of their professional identity as journalists, tend to experiment deliberately with working schemes, but mostly recognize their corporate identity.

Streszczenie:
Purpose – The aim of this paper is to explore new paths for the science of ideas and general reflection on creativity by outlining the possibility to conceive ideation (idea generation) as a social practice. Currently, creativity is predominantly treated as a psychological phenomenon, ideas are regarded as externalized thoughts, and ideation as a mental activity. This perspective, while well-established, like its historicity and as well as social and material determinants relatively untouched. This paper draws on the current wave of practice theories (sometimes labelled as a “practice turn” in social theory) to argue that ideation may be treated as a social practice, and its constitution and evolution as following the logic of how practices are organized in social life. The article presents the elements constitutive for any social practice to exist (i.e., meanings, materials, and competences) and shows how some practices (like fine arts and science) emerged to be socially believed to produce new ideas. It also shows that in the last century a new practice - ‘deliberate creativity’ - emerged as a practice producing novel and useful ideas. The current state and future development of deliberate creativity are presented as depending on changing configuration of meanings, materials, and competences of this practice. Design/methodology/approach – The papers is a theoretical contribution illustrated by some empirical examples from other studies. Originality/value – There is still little studies exploring the historical, social and cultural aspects of creativity and its development to current forms (e.g., Eekelen 2017, 2018; Wilf 2016; Reckwitz 2018). The proposed conceptualization is an attempt to offer an original theoretical framework allowing to grasp ideation as a social phenomenon that may inspire other research and help to explore aspects of creativity that are difficult to be accounted for within the dominant perspectives.

Background: The objective of WP7 of JA TERROR is to promote the implementation of Risk and Crisis Communication at all stages of risk management, on both national and EU level. During a crisis or emergency, communication to the public may include media releases, website content, talking points for spokespersons, interviews, social media posts, public service announcements and advertising. It is important to determine which populations are at greater risk and use the most appropriate methods to reach both them and the public. In addition to providing accurate and timely information, informative material for the public must also address and deal with misconceptions, misinformation and rumours. Communication planning must be an integral part of Generic Plans, including the development of country-level technical guidance as well as public information and training. Methods and Objectives: The main objective of the document is to provide practical information on how to manage the flow of risk and crisis communication among stakeholders and the public in the event of a biological or chemical terror attack. The guidance tool is evidence-based as it based on best practices and after-action reviews from the COVID-19 pandemic Results: The recommendations derived in this guideline are given from a health sector perspective but should be applicable to all sectors with the responsibility to public health in the event of a biological or chemical terror attack, for example, both for the health, security, and civil protection sectors. They have been defined, grouped and presented per each phase in the emergency management cycle and should be considered in developing, updating, or revising the national, sector, and facility emergency management plans. Conclusions: • Rapid, open, and coordinated communication with the public can determine to what degree terrorists will succeed with their intentions. Therefore, risk communication should be considered as a foundation for national security. • Social media is a leading channel for communication that should be used in a dialogical way • Disinformation should be monitored and handled.

Streszczenie:
The main aim of this article is to outline the findings of a grid-based review process (Caputi et al., 2012; Fransella et al., 2004) directed at literacy and numeracy (LN) practices documented by the literacy team in the institute’s evidence-based LN compliance reports for a four-year period (2017–2020). Outlined is the author-reviewer’s use of a repertory grid to address two research questions: How could a repertory grid be used to explore his constructs (as a reviewer) and show how these constructs were interconnected? How could the repertory grid findings raise his and his team’s awareness of hidden meanings in his construing? Hence, the focus of convenience of the grid was defined as follows: Reviewing LNembedding practices at a tertiary institute in Aotearoa from a business strategy perspective. The ten most recent institutional LN compliance reports and a selection of six schools of business strategy served as sources for identifying 12 elements to be used in constructs elicitation. The so-called difference method was applied in formulating 12 bipolar constructs for the review. The author then donned the reviewer’s hat, rating each element on a 7-point rating scale for the 12 constructs – this yielded a 12 x 12 matrix of data for analysis. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (Version 27) (IBM Corp, 2020) was used to perform a principal components analysis (PCA). Five components, explaining 81.25% of the variance in the grid ratings, were identified. These components highlighted the underlying structure and connectedness of the constructs elicited for the review, uncovering five themes: deliberate innovative practices, solution-centred transformation, deliberate evidence-based tracking, contesting contentious LN practices, and flexibility and responsiveness to unintended events in the educational setting. The conclusion was that anyone performing a review or reflective activity could profitably use repertory grids to raise their awareness of hidden meanings in their construing.

How does a deliberate engagement with a hydrosphere injured by climate change impact the development of new curricula for the design studio? Given the anticipation of major destabilizations to our hydrological cycles, it is vital to question whether the conventions of design practice as well as teaching still hold water? As the development of established disciplinary and practice standards in architecture have been informed by the presumption of a stabilized Holocene, when formulating new design courses, could the design fields acclimatize to a new set of contexts and practices? This paper will elaborate on this by reflecting on an ongoing series of design studios that we have initiated and directed within architecture as well as urban design programs in Melbourne, Australia that focus on cultivating design practices that respond to climate challenges associated with the hydrosphere. These threats are defined by oscillations between two extremes; its acute overabundance and an austere scarcity. Climate change is anticipated to bring an increased frequency and severity of flood events to the city’s neighborhoods while extended droughts will threaten the capacity for water as a resource to sustain Melbourne’s existing ecologies and projected populations.¹

Streszczenie:
Abstract Commissioning is not a project close-out activity or a mere ribbon-cutting event. It is a pivotal project activity that demands meticulous, comprehensive planning and execution under a robust monitoring and control framework. Commissioning is indispensable for the safe and reliable transition from construction to operation of oil and gas facilities. Project commissioning is riddled with critical challenges that put personnel, facilities, and the environment at risk. This phase of the project is particularly susceptible to pressure from key stakeholders, especially when earlier phases have caused delays without adequate adjustments to the project's timeline for completion. Furthermore, the expertise of commissioning engineers significantly influences progress in facilities design, construction, operation, and maintenance. Their experience ensures decision accuracy, agility, and flexibility when unforeseen events occur. Therefore, it is crucial to communicate the responsibilities and authority of commissioning personnel clearly. Key considerations for guiding leadership in decision-making and stakeholder management during commissioning encompass the unique aspects of facility location(s) - green field vs. brownfield; the complexity of the facility and the nature of fluids to be handled or processed; activity timelines; economic considerations which may necessitate phasing of works to aid flexibility and early product to market for quick wins; adoption of appropriate commissioning frameworks and strategies; and compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements. In conclusion, understanding the processes and activities involved in commissioning oil and gas facilities helps minimize risk, manage stakeholders’ expectations, and broker support when challenges or unplanned events occur in this project delivery phase. An After-Action Review or lessons-learned session will help deliberate and document gains and challenges encountered for referencing and supporting future projects.

Wildlife damage management (WDM) is an exciting field with many opportunities to provide solutions to the complex issues involved in human-wildlife interactions. In addition, WDM wildlife control operators (WCO) face a variety of threats to their physical well-being. Injuries can result from misused, faulty, or poorly maintained equipment, inexperience, mishandled wildlife, harsh weather, and dangerous situations, such as electrical lines. The goals of this publication are to: Develop an awareness of safety issues and adopt a mindset of “Safety First”, Review the major safety threats that WCOs face, Provide basic information for WCOs to protect themselves, and List resources for further information and training. Work in WDM poses many safety risks to those involved. Awareness, planning, and deliberate action can eliminate or reduce many threats. As the industry continues to develop, WCOs must keep up with new threats and safety practices to maintain their well-being. Following safe work practices helps to ensure WCOs remain on-the-job and injury free.

This article weaves together literature to theorise whatu – the traditional Māori practice of weaving used to make cloaks – as a toi Māori (Māori arts) pedagogy. In its simplest form, pedagogy can be understood as the deliberate processes by which knowledge, attitudes or skills are conveyed (Miller & Findlay, 1996), the systemised learning principles or ‘methods’ of teaching (Good & Merkel, 1973), or how and why we teach the way we do. Internationally renowned scholars of pedagogy such as Piaget, Vygotsky, Brunner and Freire have shaped Western teaching pedagogy and, as such, the ways that we teach and learn. Theories and scholarship around pedagogy are broad and vast, and extend far beyond the interest of this study. Instead, this article is a kaupapa Māori literature review to explore broad notions of pedagogy, through a Māori arts lens, that intersect with Māori pedagogies (Hemara, 2000); those that are grounded in Māori language, aspirations, tikanga (customs) and values, to support our developing theorisation of whatu as Māori arts pedagogy. What might we learn about how and why we teach Māori arts practices by developing a Māori arts, or toi Māori, pedagogy?

Streszczenie:
With climate change policies increasingly used as a tool for further political polarisation, it is important to explore tools that could help bring the public on board with climate ambition. Climate assemblies, if done to a high standard, can increase community empowerment while rebuilding legitimacy within policy-making from the view of the general public. Whilst climate assemblies are important it is also vital to research theoretical approaches as well as real-world experience of climate assemblies to develop better understanding of how assembly outputs can effectively develop and legitimise climate policy and support participatory democracy. This report is developed by the Just Transition Lab at the University of Aberdeen. It is part of the Just Transition Communities Project led by North East Scotland Climate Action Network Hub and funded by the Scottish Government Just Transition Fund. The project plans to explore how communities in the North East Scotland can be involved in and drive the process of designing, creating, and delivering a just transition. This report aims to inform future climate assemblies initiatives, leading to increased community participation in climate change mitigation and adaptation policy. This report provides a literature review as an introduction to deliberative democracy and climate assemblies. It examines theory and practice in all the relevant aspects of using climate assemblies to increase public awareness of climate change, aid climate policy-making, and increasing the legitimacy and public acceptance of current and future policies. From the design of climate assemblies to participant recruitment, scale, and outcomes – this report provides an overview of theoretical approaches and 14 case studies of climate assemblies to present a rounded view of deliberative democracy in practice.

Streszczenie:
The atrocities committed by the Islamic State (IS) between 2014 and 2017 left deep scars on the Nineveh Plains in northern Iraq. IS deliberately targeted ethnic and religious communities with the aim of erasing the traces of diversity, pluralism and coexistence that have long characterized the region. To prevent people from living as Assyrians, Chaldeans, Kaka’i, Shabaks, Syriacs, Turkmen and Yazidis, IS destroyed sites of cultural and religious significance to these communities and devastated their livelihoods, including their crop and livestock farming activities. Using a people-centered approach, this SIPRI Research Policy Paper stresses the need for a holistic approach to post-conflict reconstruction in the Nineveh Plains that not only focuses on rebuilding the physical environment and economic structures, but also pays adequate attention to restoring the ability of communities to engage in cultural and religious practices, and to mending social and intercommunity relations. The paper highlights the interconnectedness of physical environments, economic structures, cultural practices and social dynamics. It stresses the need to address the impacts of the IS occupation while taking into account other pressing challenges such as climate change and water scarcity.

Streszczenie:
The paper examines how corporate social responsibility and corporate governance systems affect the wellbeing of East European countries. Corporate governance is the system of forms and methods used for a company's governance. Inspecting the relationship between corporate governance and corporate social responsibility considers the opinions of different stakeholders about the development and administration of a company's portfolio. A wide range of scientific publications define and study theoretically the issues surrounding corporate governance structure, models, control, audit system, and management quality inside the organization. Businesses that practice corporate social responsibility make a deliberate effort to conduct their operations in a way that improves society and the environment rather than degrades it. In addition to enhancing societal aspects, corporate social responsibility can assist businesses in projecting a positive image in the improvement of other environmental issues in East European countries. ‍

The Australia and New Zealand School of Government and the Australian Public Service Commission commissioned the Monash Sustainable Development Institute to conduct research into how Public Opinion Data (POD) is used, and should be used, in policy development. This final report from the project summarises the key findings from the project’s 4 research activities – 3 of which have previously been published by ANZSOG: 1. Rapid Evidence Review 2. Analysis of the COVID-19 Pulse Survey administered by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet 3. Practice Review 4. Deliberative Dialogue The report includes a practice note containing guidance for policymakers using POD in business-as-usual and crisis contexts. The practice note explains the circumstances in which POD is most useful, the conditions for credible, sound, and transparent POD use, and how to manage key risks like the appearance of political bias and the tension between methodological rigour and resource availability.

Weaver, R., and J. Ogborn. CGX-00-005 Cellulosic-Covered Electrode Storage - Influence on Welding Performance and Weld Properties. Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0011816.

Streszczenie:
Cellulosic-covered electrodes have been used for shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) circumferential welding of line pipe over many decades. They are characterized by electrode coverings containing organic matter. Unlike low hydrogen SMAW electrodes that achieve optimum results at low covering moisture levels, cellulosic-covered electrodes require much higher covering moisture levels for proper operation. For example, pipe welders have been known to deliberately expose electrodes to the weather, or even dip them in water prior to use. There are suggestions that high incidents of hydrogen assisted cracking (HAC) might be associated with low moisture levels in the cellulosic-covered electrodes used. This suggests further that storage and handling practices based on conventional wisdom in the field may not be sufficient as the industry transitions to more demanding applications and higher-strength materials. Consequently, this work was undertaken to develop more definitive information on the performance of cellulosic-covered electrodes for three purposes: determine the influence of various storage and handling practices on electrode covering moisture, determine the influence of covering moisture on electrode operability, weld metal chemical composition, and weld hardness, and develop more definitive guidelines for cellulosic-covered electrode storage and handling practice. Three different E8010 type electrodes (one E8018-G and two E8018-P1) were subjected to various storage conditions - temperatures from -40C (-40F) to 66C (150F), and time periods up to 196 hours. As the temperature increased there was a tendency for lower electrode covering moisture levels with corresponding increases in weld metal alloy content (particularly Mn, Si, and Ti), increased weld hardness, increased weld strength, and higher tendency to HAC. Variations in electrode operation were also noted.
