Streszczenie:
To facilitate the solution of complicated problems in the complex, dynamic environment, the systems theory based on evaluation of the relationships between their constituent parts and allowing the systems approach to be applied to the analysis of complex structures, phenomena and processes should be used. In this case, it is possible to change the state of the considered complex objects or effectively manage them. To manage a system, you should first quantitatively evaluate its state. For this purpose, a formalized model reflecting the object should be constructed. The above model will reflect the considered object from various perspectives. Taking into consideration that a system is a structured set of interconnected elements, a set of criteria, including a great number of these elements, should also be structured. In this way, the hierarchical structure of the criteria will be obtained. To evaluate it quantitatively, a certain amount of criteria which an expert is able to analyse should be used for making a subsystem. If the number of elements in the subsystem is too big, the structuring continues by introducing some additional hierarchical levels. The obtained hierarchically arranged set of criteria may be quantitatively evaluated by using multicriteria methods.

Streszczenie:
A system of concepts used in the technology of designing and application of intelligent systems formalized models is presented. The technology is based on concepts that reflect the commonality of theoretical and empirical ideas about the structural and functional characteristics of knowledge formed in different areas involved in the study of thought processes and memory organization structures. Concept images are implemented as formalized descriptions of the basic elements of intelligent systems, divided into three separate groups: knowledge representation formalisms, multi-dimensional knowledge and memory structures, and cybernetic elements of knowledge and memory structures control. The transformation of abstract concepts from the general mathematical model of an intelligent system into descrip-tions of the entities of applied models of such systems is carried out using homomorphic extension operations. These operations are based on symbolic transformations that specify the content of general mathematical expressions. The application of unified classes of basic concepts of intelligent systems elements and their description formats provides flexibility in the development of models developed out the initial abstract model. The concepts of formalized models of intelligent systems constitute a fragment of the ontology of design management of such systems, used to model de-sign processes.

Streszczenie:
Differentiation in the level of socio-economic development of territories is largely manifested in both inter-regional and intra-regional differences in personal income and consumption of goods. In this regard the methods of hierarchical analysis (HLM, Hierarchical Linear Modeling) that make it possible to study variation at several levels taking into account both municipal and regional factors are acquiring special relevance. Along with hierarchical effects, neighborhood effects can be distinguished. This is possible due to the imposition of a spatial adjacency matrix on the data observing spatial interactions within the spatial-hierarchical models (HSAM, Hierarchical Spatial Autoregressive Modeling). The aim of the study is to better understand the relationship between consumption and personal income within a hierarchically structured and spatially oriented economic system. The analysis uses the data from 2319 municipalities (i.e. municipal districts or rayons) and urban districts (okrugs) in 84 constituent entities of the Russian Federation for 2018. It showed that 38.4% of the variation among municipalities in terms of sold foods volume is explained by regional factors. The developed hierarchical (two-level) model revealed the positive impact of the volume of social benefits and taxable personal income in the municipality, and the volume of per capita retail trade at the level of the Russian Federation constituent entities, on the volume of foods sold within municipalities, and substantiate the negative impact of the Gini index increase, as well as highlight the positive spatial effect

The paper considers the problem of designing modern lighting devices and optical systems. Analysis of the development of lighting devices shows that the main stage in their development is the calculation of the optical system. The results of this calculation largely determine the lighting and functional characteristics of light devices. The efficiency of existing methods of calculation are not always satisfied of the development. Application and development of specialized software for the calculation and simulation of light devices significantly facilitates and speeds up the process of their design. The paper presents a mathematical model developed by the software system, described in the hierarchical structure of the simulation geometry LED modules and light devices. Light device in a hierarchical structure represented by the root element of the tree, where the housing, the optical system, a light source, protective glass, suspension assembly, and others are nodes. The affine transformation using to calculate of the absolute position of nodes. The geometry of the nodes is modeled using triangulation grids. To simulate smooth surfaces in a triangulated mesh introduced an additional element - the rib. Streszczenie:
Application of methods for designing decision support information systems for hierarchical systems is considered. Determining the interaction parameters of methods for designing decision support information systems for managing hierarchical production and technical systems is an urgent scientific problem, the which solution makes a significant contribution to the development of technologies for designing decision support systems. The process of operation of a decision support system for the analysis of hierarchies using the full graphical interface technology, a functional model of an expert information system for the analysis of hierarchical structures is presented. Hierarchical production and technical systems are complex, which entails great complexity in the development of decision support information systems to manage them. This complexity creates the problem of 'crisis' in the development of such systems for hierarchical production and technical systems. Despite many advantages and a long history of successfully applying the unified design method to the development of information systems, it does not completely overcome the problem of this crisis. To overcome this problem for hierarchical production and technical systems, it is proposed to modify the unified design method and use the synergistic effect from the combined use of structural, object and visual modelling methods in the form of a new design method - a modified system design process. The article presents the scheme and algorithm of the proposed method, the results of the analysis of its application. The possibility of its application to systems with a hierarchical structure is established. Unlike traditional models of information systems, the decision support information system model built according to the new method successfully integrates various subject areas of knowledge due to its visibility and support for object-oriented design technologies, which allows it to be effectively used to create an expert information system model for complex technical systems.

<p>Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) represents a critical appurtenance to modern engineering that amalgamates the skills and techniques from various disciplines of engineering and computational science. Modern civil architectures, involving high-rise buildings, complex structural designs, and innovative shapes, on one hand represent the urban development, but at the same time is a challenge from sustainability perspective. In order to ensure the tenability of such structures, advanced SHM procedures need to be developed. The presented work in this paper is an effort on these lines. The wear and tear in the buildings related to weather, as well as other natural disasters, needs to be monitored regularly and systematically in order to prevent any serious structural damage. In current SHM practices, human experts are deployed at various structurally critical places on these buildings to perform specific measurements and analyze them to decide on the structural health condition. This simple approach is becoming more and more complicated as well as perilous for the human personnel involved, due to the modern architecture that involves greater heights, and complex structures. The proposed system utilizes flying and crawling/roving robots for this purpose. The flying robots, first, scan the surface of the building to any height needed, and then the custom-designed algorithms analyze the images from these scans in order to discern the possible defects/anomalies in the structure. Using these defect pointers, the custom-designed rover robot on top of the structure lowers a robotic probe that scans only those areas for substantiating the anomalies and the degree of defects present.</p>

In tolerancing activities focusing on the allocation of geometrical tolerances, many critical issues originate from the non-optimal assignment of responsibilities among the organization units involved. This paper aims to depict relations between different tolerancing activities and relevant specifications, assigning them to the proper actor and, therefore, expanding the ISO 8015:2011 “responsibility principle”. A classification among tolerancing activities, specifications, and media is proposed; a horizontal hierarchical framework among functional, manufacturing, and verification specifications and a vertical hierarchical framework along the supply chain are discussed. Examples of both hierarchical structures are presented.

Recommendation system, also known as a recommender system, is a tool to help the user in providing asuggestion of a specific dilemma. Recently, the interest in developing a recommendation system in manyfields has increased. Fuzzy Logic system (FLSs) is one of the approaches that can be used to model therecommendation systems as it can deal with uncertainty and imprecise information. However, one of thefundamental issues in FLS is the problem of the curse of dimensionality. That is, the number of rules inFLSs is increasing exponentially with the number of input variables. One effective way to overcome thisproblem is by using Hierarchical Fuzzy System (HFSs). This paper aims to explore the use of HFSs forRecommendation system. Specifically, we are interested in exploring and comparing the HFS and FLS forthe Career path recommendation system (CPRS) based on four key criteria, namely topology, the numberof rules, the rules structures and interpretability. The findings suggested that the HFS has advantagesover FLS towards improving the interpretability models, in the context of a recommendation systemexample. This study contributes to providing an insight into the development of interpretable HFSs in theRecommendation systems.

Streszczenie:
In this thesis issues regarding hierarchical navigation structures on mobile websites have been investigated with focus on usability. The goal has been to provide a complementary basis for hierarchical mobile navigation development. Two mobile website prototypes with the same hierarchical structured content, but with different types of navigation solutions, were developed and tested on test persons. Due to a relatively low amountof test persons, the tests purpose was to provide qualitative information regarding the issue of hierarchal mobile navigation, which then could be discussed and analysed. The results of the thesis points to relevant usability issues that can arise if hierarchical structure is used on mobile websites, and explains aspects to considerate during the development of such sites.

Streszczenie:
This thesis was stimulated by the requirement to decommission offshore steel structures in the North Sea Offshore Oil and Gas Industry, but applies worldwide, where Oil and Gas production has ceased. It initially shows the UK Government assessment of the scale of decommissioning in the UKCS where there are several hundred structures with associated pipelines, risers and wellheads that have to be cut into sub-structures and individual pieces and then removed. Factors other than cessation of production drive the sequence and timing of structural decommissioning, such as the price of oil &gas and what new development might require already installed infrastructure. The nature of decommissioning of underwater steel lattice structure of offshore oil platforms called ‘jackets’ and underwater infrastructure is briefly discussed with the focus on cutting. The comparison of the performance of different underwater cutting tools currently most used in decommissioning is investigated with respect to two new underwater cutting techniques not only in terms of speed of cut but also in terms of deployment time and infrastructure requirements. A number of mainstream cutting tools and deployment systems are briefly introduced to provide a background, showing the range of tools preceding those investigated in more detail in terms of cutting and deployment efficiency. During the initial cutting research it was considered that fibre lasers had developed sufficiently in terms of power density, size and cost to be applied to underwater cutting. They were considered to have potential benefits over other underwater cutting techniques due to the continually increasing power density at the cut and have the advantage of a small envelope due to the small size of the potential cutting head The potential footprint of the laser head was envisaged to be similar to that of the rotating electrode arc tool therefore the deployment issues investigated might apply to both. The later development There is little published information on underwater cutting by laser particularly for the Oil and Gas Industry except for application to cutting rock for drilling. Research has been biased towards the nuclear industry using manufacturing techniques for surface treatment and cooling to reduce stress cracking. Fibre lasers are expensive to buy and logistically difficult to rent therefore it was considered that 1.2 kW CO2 laser at the University of Aberdeen (UoA) could be employed in obtaining an insight into the cutting and deployment issues concerned. Thus, the author designed, built and tested an underwater laser cutting head that would interface to the CO2 laser and would work at different orientations, fully submerged underwater in a tank. The trials were designed to assess the relationship of cutting parameters and performance at three orthogonal attitudes underwater, (beam downward, horizontal and upward pointing) to represent the orthogonal approach to horizontal and vertical primary axis tubular members, that comprise a jacket’s construction. The cutting parameters and their effects were then analysed to determine trends, behaviour and technical issues. Although an underwater laser cutting system could use a fibre laser, the CO2 laser enabled preliminary tests to be carried out and the viability of a cutting head to be explored. In the conclusion the design and performance of the laser cutting head is assessed with respect to the performance of other main-stream underwater cutting tools developed earlier. Offshore deployment of the laser cutting head is also discussed. Recommendations for future research and development work, to enable the realisation of underwater laser cutting, are presented.

Streszczenie:
AbstractThe concept of “nature-algorithm-structure” refers to a digital design method in architecture that draws inspiration from nature, extracting its mathematical and physical conceptual models to construct structural systems with parameters. This study aims to address the challenge of parametric form-finding in reticular tension structures. By observing the phenomenon of “sponge regeneration”, we further illustrate the generation and optimization of reticular tension structures through the hierarchical structures of “monomer”-“path”-“mesh”. Tensile structural systems are rebound forms, and their analytical models must account for their nonlinear characteristics and the existence of equilibrium self-course. Starting from the growth dynamics of “sponge regeneration behavior”, this paper extracts the logic behind it: sponge monomers combine randomly into partial units under the condition of shredding and discrete, forming a single organism through aggregation. The multi-dimensional bone needle serves as a structural component, enabling multi-axis reorganization, while the multi-directional mesh surface as a morphological component realizes multi-branch reproduction, forming a natural “network tension structure”. This study focuses on the biomimetic form-finding of bone needle microstructure, drawing inspiration from sponge regeneration behavior. By analyzing the growth dynamics of sponge regeneration, we aim to develop a better understanding of the principles behind the formation of bone needle microstructure. This finding provides significant reference for the development of modern structures and promotes the bioshape and optimization of tensile structures.

AbstractThis study examined the challenges school principals face at work, and their support needs for professional development. The study drew on cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT) and approached as contradictions principals’ work, the schools in which they operate as activity systems and the challenges they face. The research data consists of three data sets collected from principals: data from a quantitative survey (n = 47), data from workshops for principals (n = 8) and data from individual interviews (n = 5). Three main contradictions were formed from the data and named as (1) inadequate tools in relation to the object of activity, (2) hierarchical structure and tradition of schools and (3) fragmentation of the subject. The results reveal that the work of the principal and the organizational environment are increasingly complex—principals must solve unique problems that are new both to them and in society. The results point towards a shift in problem-solving and learning from an individual perspective towards the communal and inter-organizational view. A CHAT framework can be used as a tool in the development of these collaborative structures, practices and culture.

Streszczenie:
AbstractThe accelerated shift towards electrification in the tracked vehicle industry, particularly concerning off-road and military vehicles, poses challenges due to their intensive power consumption and limited charging infrastructures. Addressing these challenges, this paper focuses on the development of an adaptive state-tuned power management system for a series hybrid electric tracked vehicle. The vehicle's architecture includes an electric traction unit and a hybrid powerpack. The core of this research involves designing a dynamic power allocation system that adjusts the power sharing between the battery and a generator set under varying operational conditions. Through a systematic approach, a power management algorithm featuring a hierarchical controller structure to manage the power flow is designed. Simulation tests, both Driver-in-the-Loop (DIL) and Model-in-the-Loop (MIL), were employed to verify the system’s performance. Results indicate that the algorithm coordinates power distribution, ensuring optimal performance while adhering to the system's constraints and adapting to immediate power demands, demonstrating its potential for enhancing hybrid vehicle operations in demanding maneuvers.

Abstract Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s (TII) primary functions are to operate, maintain and extend the life of national roads, tunnels, and light rail infrastructure in Ireland. Among the priorities for investment include the use of asset management principles to manage assets safely, sustainably, efficiently, and effectively over their useful life. This paper describes TII’s journey in asset management including the development of TII’s recently published Asset Management Policy, Strategy and Framework, as well as the ongoing development of Strategic and Group-level Asset Management Plans for the various asset classes within TII to align with its overall strategic objectives and organisational goals. A best-fit approach has been developed which addresses TII’s changing operational conditions and commitments in terms of sustainability, circular economy, and climate adaptation. A hierarchical structure based on the “line of sight” principal is presented in which TII proposes to achieve its overall asset management objectives in line with an ISO 55000 integrated asset management system approach.

Abstract Design thinking is a term and method widely used in the design industry. Due to its human-centered approach and the versatility of the process, many disciplines and sectors outside of those traditionally labelled as the design industry have adopted the methodology as the front end of their working process to create direction and a more targeted approach to product, service and policy development. One example is the Thai public sector. This article investigates the use of design from five government organizations, with a particular focus on design thinking and service design as an innovation and working tool and the adaptation of the “design ethos”—design principles that characterize the designer’s culture in practice for the public sector in Thailand. It uses the theoretical framework of the four-design typology to explain the state of design adoption in the public sector. The four domains are (i) design as output, (ii) design as capacity building, (iii) design as culture, and (iv) design as core value. These four domains of “design as” are explained with case studies that are related to Thailand, followed by a section on how to improve design adoption, and concluded with the three innovation shift suggestions, which are hierarchical to collaborating shift, administrating to innovating shift, and peripheral to structural shift.

AbstractThis paper presents the Hydrogen Ontology (HOLY), a domain ontology modeling the complex and dynamic structures of hydrogen-based markets. The hydrogen economy has become a politically and economically crucial sector for the transition to renewable energy, accelerating technological and socio-economic innovations. However, the attainment of market insights requires a large variety of informational concepts which are predominantly found in unstructured text data. HOLY provides the necessary structure for the representation of these concepts. Through a top-down approach, HOLY defines taxonomies based on a hierarchical structure of products and applications. In addition, to ensure reusability, the ontology incorporates components from established ontologies in its structure. As a result, HOLY consists of over 100 classes defining information about organizations, projects, components, products, applications, markets, and indicators. Hence, our work contributes to the systemic modeling of the hydrogen domain with a focus on its value chain. Formally, we represent and validate the ontology with Semantic Web Technologies. HOLY includes lexical-semantic information (e.g., synonyms, hyponyms, definitions, and examples) to simplify data integration into knowledge acquisition systems. Therefore, we provide a foundation for the retrieval, storage, and delivery of market insights. A first application based on HOLY at the Fraunhofer IIS offers an up-to-date market overview of developments in the fuel cell environment.

Abstract Corrosion management systems have been adopted widely by the oil, gas, and process industries. In contrast, adoption of these approaches in civil and maritime infrastructure is still in its early stages. A corrosion management plan begins with understanding a few key items. First, identify what infrastructure elements are present and should be inventoried. Second, identify what construction materials and corrosion protection measures are already in place. Third, understand the nature and severity of environmental and usage-related exposures and impact on corrosion. Lastly, implement a systematic approach to assessing the condition and performance of corrosion protection measures over time to improve design, maintenance, and repair. This paper describes the development of a formal corrosion inspection and condition assessment program to support corrosion and asset management planning for maritime structures at Port Houston. A hierarchical, elemental-based inspection approach was developed using visual inspection criteria and prescribed measurements to characterize the condition of coatings and cathodic protection systems for above- and underwater elements in maritime structures.

An indispensable aspect that can greatly influence the profile of the managerial structure in enterprises is the educational system. At the end of the last century, under the pressure of the second wave of globalization caused by technological development, there was a need to reexamine and redefine the role of the university. The subject of analysis in this paper is the relationship between the hierarchical values of professional activities and theoretical and practical knowledge from the point of view of managerial structures in private and public enterprises on the example of one unit of local self-government in the Republic of Serbia. Based on the opinion of representatives from the private (1.85) and public sector (1.85) on the scale of hierarchical values of professional activities, the adopted systematic theoretical and practical knowledge were evaluated in the first place. Through the analysis of the responses received from both observed groups, it was found that modern managers are the most open social group for improvement, motivated to acquire new knowledge arising from the need for more effective adaptation to changes.

A Software life cycle (SLC) is used to describe the phases of software cycle and ensure the good quality software is built. A software system can be regard as hierarchical and composed of a set of interacting system elements. The system elements will be implemented to fulfill its respective specified requirements. In this paper, as a complex software system, system element also is an entire system. Software hierarchical model has applied commonly in various software analysis areas like software complexity analysis, software reliability allocation analysis, etc. A software reliability hierarchical structure modeling (SRHSM) is proposed for the analysis of the software stages before it being used, which are concept stage, development stage and production stage. Based on the preliminary work, the concepts of SRSHM method is optimized, and increased some basic elements. RSHSM method comprises two processes in SLC, including Partition and Composition process, and is divided into four levels, System level, Subsystem level, Unit level, Code level. Particularly, under the less information condition, this method can be used in the initial stage of SLC to design and analyze the software.

Abstract To explore the applicability of the explanatory structure model in the analysis of the water transportation system, the study of fleet development constraints of the Yangtze River mainline is studied as an example. Based on defining the fleet transportation system boundary and summarizing each influencing factor, the standard ISM deconstruction method is used to obtain the hierarchical relationship among the influencing factors. The structural hierarchical relationship of the constraints to the development of fleet transportation on the Yangtze River mainline is analyzed, and the root factors that restrict its development are found to be: fleet size and new logistics pattern. The results show that the explanatory structure model can better analyze the hierarchical relationship between the factors of the water transportation system. Based on this, and in the context of the current major strategic decision of “carbon peak, carbon-neutral”, the paper finally proposes a new fleet transportation mode combining single vessel and fleet characteristics as a solution to the root causes, which can be an efficient and green transportation option for the Yangtze River mainline cargo transportation market.

The modern understanding of the state as a complex social system allows us to assert that its resilience is based on ensuring systemic homeostasis as a stabilizing dynamic mechanism for resolving contradictions arising in society associated with the threat of losing control over the processes of public administration and legal regulation. Public administration is a kind of social management that ensures the organization of social relations and processes, giving the social system the proper coordination of actions, the necessary orderliness, sustainability and stability. The problem of state resilience is directly related to the resilience of state (public) administration requires a «breakthrough in traditional approaches» and recognition of «the state administration system as an organic system, the constituent parts and elements of which are diverse and capable of continuous self-development». Within the framework of the «organizational point of view» on the control methodology, there are important patterns and features that determine the viability and resilience of public administration and regulation processes in the state and society. These include: W. Ashby's cybernetic law of required diversity: for effective control, the degree of diversity of the governing body must be no less than the degree of diversity of the controlled object; E. Sedov’s law of hierarchical compensations: in complex, hierarchically organized and networked systems, the growth of diversity at the top level in the structure of the system is ensured by a certain limitation of diversity at its lower levels; St. Beer’s principle of invariance of the structure of viable social systems. The study was supported by the RFBR and EISI within the framework of the scientific project No. 21-011-31155.

Streszczenie:
One of the well-known results of the theory of management is the fact, that multi-stage hierarchical organization of management is unstable. Hence, the ideas expressed in a number of works by Don Tapscott on advantages of network organization of businesses over vertically integrated ones is clear. While studying the basic tendencies of business organization in the conditions of globalization, computerization and internetization of the society and the results of the financial activities of the well-known companies, the authors arrive at the conclusion, that such companies, as IBM, Boeing, Mercedes-Benz and some others companies have not been engaged in their traditional business for a long time. Their partner networks performs this function instead of them. The companies themselves perform the function of system integrators. The Tapscott’s idea finds its confirmation within the framework of a new powerful direction of the development of the modern interdisciplinary science – the theory of the complex networks (CN) [2]. CN-s are multifractal objects, the loss of multifractality being the indicator of the system transition from more complex state into more simple state. We tested the multifractal properties of the data using the wavelet transform modulus maxima approach in order to analyze scaling properties of our company. Comparative analysis of the singularity spectrumf(®), namely, the difference between maximum and minimum values of ® (∆ = ®max ¡ ®min) shows that IBM company is considerably more fractal in comparison with Apple Computer. Really, for it the value of ∆ is equal to 0.3, while for the vertically integrated company Apple it only makes 0.06 – 5 times less. The comparison of other companies shows that this dependence is of general character. Taking into consideration the fact that network organization of business has become dominant in the last 5-10 years, we carried out research for the selected companies in the earliest possible period of time which was determined by the availability of data in the Internet, or by historically later beginning of stock trade of computer companies. A singularity spectrum of the first group of companies turned out to be considerably narrower, or shifted toward the smaller values of ® in the pre-network period. The latter means that dynamic series were antipersistant. That is, these companies‘ management was rigidly controlled while the impact of market mechanisms was minimized. In the second group of companies if even the situation did changed it did not change for the better. In addition, we discuss applications to the construction of portfolios of stock that have a stable ratio of risk to return.

Lylo, Taras. THE MISSION OF A JOURNALIST IN THE ESSAYISTIC INTERPRETATIONS BY OLEGARIO GONZÁLEZ DE CARDEDAL. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2024.54-55.12156.

Streszczenie:
The article analyzes Olegario González de Cardedal’s views on journalistic mission, that he interprets as a “ministry”. For him, a journalist is the minister of the word, the creator and the interpreter of events, the spokesperson of human being and the witness of human hope. For the Spanish Catholic theologian and author, the newspaper is both “structure and soul”. He believes that media is something more than an ordinary profitable enterprise and interprets journalism as a “spiritual ministry”. A prerequisite for the true ministry is the hierarchical system of values. In this context, for González de Cardedal the most important are “decisive values”, “permanent priorities”, from the positions of which one should think. He also defines two main ideals of mass communication: the development of nobility and the strengthening of freedom. In addition, Olegario González de Cardedal emphasizes such features of a journalist as the devotion to the truth, the respect for facts, the professional cognition of the order of reality, the empathy and the freedom in relation to the powerful of this world. Moreover, the essayist pays special attention to the need for a more targeted approach to the coverage of international events. Olegario González de Cardedal believes that a reader first of all looks in a newspaper not only for what helps him get closer to the people who live nearby, but also to those ones who live far away. This, in his opinion, is a necessity at a time when information is a source of orientation in the struggle for existence, especially at a time of integral challenges that make geographical distances relative. “Human life has already reached cosmic proportions, and we cannot be human without being neighbors. Even through a provincial newspaper, great events of the world must travel: its landscapes, its people, its destinies...” Recognizing the fact that all newspapers are fundamentally local, however, the thinker notes, they must all build a common consciousness, convince of the common purpose and hope. Keywords: journalistic mission, newspaper, values, ideals of communication, freedom.

This study was conducted to inventory, classify, and map soils and vegetation within the ecosystems of Katmai National Park and Preserve (KATM) using an ecological land survey (ELS) approach. The ecosystem classes identified in the ELS effort were mapped across the park, using an archive of Geo-graphic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) datasets pertaining to land cover, topography, surficial geology, and glacial history. The description and mapping of the landform-vegetation-soil relationships identified in the ELS work provides tools to support the design and implementation of future field- and RS-based studies, facilitates further analysis and contextualization of existing data, and will help inform natural resource management decisions. We collected information on the geomorphic, topographic, hydrologic, pedologic, and vegetation characteristics of ecosystems using a dataset of 724 field plots, of which 407 were sampled by ABR, Inc.—Environmental Research and Services (ABR) staff in 2016–2017, and 317 were from existing, ancillary datasets. ABR field plots were located along transects that were selected using a gradient-direct sampling scheme (Austin and Heligers 1989) to collect data for the range of ecological conditions present within KATM, and to provide the data needed to interpret ecosystem and soils development. The field plot dataset encompassed all of the major environmental gradients and landscape histories present in KATM. Individual state-factors (e.g., soil pH, slope aspect) and other ecosystem components (e.g., geomorphic unit, vegetation species composition and structure) were measured or categorized using standard classification systems developed for Alaska. We described and analyzed the hierarchical relationships among the ecosystem components to classify 92 Plot Ecotypes (local-scale ecosystems) that best partitioned the variation in soils, vegetation, and disturbance properties observed at the field plots. From the 92 Plot Ecotypes, we developed classifications of Map Ecotypes and Disturbance Landscapes that could be mapped across the park. Additionally, using an existing surficial geology map for KATM, we developed a map of Generalized Soil Texture by aggregating similar surficial geology classes into a reduced set of classes representing the predominant soil textures in each. We then intersected the Ecotype map with the General-ized Soil Texture Map in a GIS and aggregated combinations of Map Ecotypes with similar soils to derive and map Soil Landscapes and Soil Great Groups. The classification of Great Groups captures information on the soil as a whole, as opposed to the subgroup classification which focuses on the properties of specific horizons (Soil Survey Staff 1999). Of the 724 plots included in the Ecotype analysis, sufficient soils data for classifying soil subgroups was available for 467 plots. Soils from 8 orders of soil taxonomy were encountered during the field sampling: Alfisols (&lt;1% of the mapped area), Andisols (3%), Entisols (45%), Gelisols (&lt;1%), Histosols (12%), Inceptisols (22%), Mollisols (&lt;1%), and Spodosols (16%). Within these 8 Soil Orders, field plots corresponded to a total of 74 Soil Subgroups, the most common of which were Typic Cryaquents, Typic Cryorthents, Histic Cryaquepts, Vitrandic Cryorthents, and Typic Cryofluvents.

Bio-structures owe their remarkable mechanical properties to their hierarchical geometrical arrangement as well as heterogeneous material properties. This dissertation presents an integrated, interdisciplinary approach that employs computational mechanics combined with flow network analysis to gain fundamental insights into the failure mechanisms of high performance, light-weight, structured composites by examining the stress flow patterns formed in the nascent stages of loading for the rostrum of the paddlefish. The data required for the flow network analysis was generated from the finite element analysis of the rostrum. The flow network was weighted based on the parameter of interest, which is stress in the current study. The changing kinematics of the structural system was provided as input to the algorithm that computes the minimum-cut of the flow network. The proposed approach was verified using two classical problems three- and four-point bending of a simply-supported concrete beam. The current study also addresses the methodology used to prepare data in an appropriate format for a seamless transition from finite element binary database files to the abstract mathematical domain needed for the network flow analysis. A robust, platform-independent procedure was developed that efficiently handles the large datasets produced by the finite element simulations. Results from computational mechanics using Abaqus and complex network analysis are presented.

Streszczenie:
Reinforced soil walls are key earth retention features in the transportation infrastructure. They are used to support and retain soil in a wide variety of crucial structures, such as highways, bridges, and railways, to ensure stability. They also provide solutions for constructing embankments and slopes in constrained spaces, allowing for efficient land use and improved infrastructure planning. This study used advanced numerical modeling to improve the understanding of the behavior and long-term performance of the aging reinforced soil walls from the 1970s for asset management purposes. An asset-scale model was created to simulate the effects of weather on these walls. The model included a system to track how moisture-driven corrosion affects wall stability and performance over time. The model outputs provide implications on the wall progressive deterioration over time and estimates for the wall remaining service life. Unlike newer wall generations constructed with strict specifications that limit fill corrosivity, early wall generations may maintain high levels of moisture for prolonged periods that can significantly increase corrosion rates. Accordingly, it is recommended that fill moisture monitoring be added to asset management measures for early generation walls that could have been constructed with highly corrosive or poorly drainable fills. The results of this study indicate that even though corrosion rates vary with changes in fill moisture, the overall loss in reinforcement thickness happens at a steady rate, showing a linear relationship between cumulative corrosion and time. The results also indicate that 25% fluctuation in fill moisture has no to little effect on the cumulative corrosion, and that the average fill moisture can be used to predict an approximate long-term cumulative corrosion. Thus, it is recommended to use one year of seasonal climate data for a specific location to estimate the annual variation in fill moisture. This can predict the yearly corrosion of reinforcements, which can then be multiplied by the number of service years to estimate long-term cumulative corrosion. Finally, an asset-scale performance model based on performance-requirement failure framework was developed using the outputs of the asset-scale numerical model. These performance models can inform decisions about critical transportation infrastructure maintenance, repair, or replacement strategies, and optimizing resource allocation.

Streszczenie:
The National Park Service (NPS) Natural Resource Condition Assessment (NRCA) Program administered by the NPS Water Resources Division evaluates current conditions for important natural resources and resource indicators using primarily existing information and data. NRCAs also report on trends in resource condition, when possible, identify critical data gaps, and characterize a general level of confidence for study findings. This NRCA complements previous scientific endeavors, is multi-disciplinary in scope, employs a hierarchical indicator framework, identifies and develops reference conditions/values for comparison against current conditions, and emphasizes spatial evaluation of conditions where possible. Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial (LIBO) was authorized by an act of Congress on February 19, 1962, (Public Law 87-407) to preserve the site associated with the boyhood and family of President Abraham Lincoln, including a portion of the original Tom Lincoln farm and the nearby gravesite of Nancy Hanks Lincoln. The 200-acre memorial commemorates the pioneer farm where Abraham Lincoln lived from the age of 7 to 21. The NRCA for LIBO employed a scoping process involving Colorado State University, LIBO and other NPS staffs to establish the NRCA framework, identify important park resources, and gather existing information and data. Indicators and measures for each resource were then identified and evaluated. Data and information were analyzed and synthesized to provide summaries and address condition, trend and confidence using a standardized but flexible framework. A total of nine focal resources were examined: four addressing system and human dimensions, one addressing chemical and physical attributes, and four addressing biological attributes. The quality and currentness of data used for the evaluation varied by resource. Landscape context ? system and human dimensions included land cover and land use, natural night skies, soundscape, and climate change. Climate change and land cover/land use were not assigned a condition or trend?they provide important context to the memorial and many natural resources and can be stressors. Some of the land cover and land use-related stressors at LIBO and in the larger region are related to the development of rural land and increases in population/housing over time. The trend in land development, coupled with the lack of significantly sized and linked protected areas, presents significant challenges to the conservation of natural resources of LIBO to also include natural night skies, natural sounds and scenery. Climate change is happening and is affecting resources, but is not considered good or bad per se. The information synthesized in that section is useful in examining potential trends in the vulnerability of sensitive resources and broad habitat types such as forests. Night skies and soundscapes, significantly altered by disturbance due to traffic, development and urbanization, warrant significant and moderate concern, respectively, and appear to be in decline. Air quality was the sole resource supporting chemical and physical environment at the memorial. The condition of air quality can affect human dimensions of the park such as visibility and scenery as well as biological components such as the effect of ozone levels on vegetation health. Air quality warrants significant concern and is largely impacted by historical and current land uses outside the memorial boundary. The floral biological component was examined by assessing native species composition, Mean Coefficient of Conservation, Floristic Quality Assessment Index, invasive exotic plants, forest pests and disease, and forest vulnerability to climate change. Vegetation resources at LIBO have been influenced by historical land uses that have changed the species composition and age structure of these communities. Although large tracts of forests can be found surrounding the park, the majority of forested areas are fragmented, and few areas within and around LIBO exhibit late-successional or old-growth characteristics. Vegetation communities at LIBO have a long history of being impacted by a variety of stressors and threats including noxious and invasive weeds, diseases and insect pests; compounding effects of climate change, air pollution, acid rain/atmospheric chemistry, and past land uses; and impacts associated with overabundant white-tail deer populations. These stressors and threats have collectively shaped and continue to impact plant community condition and ecological succession. The sole metric in good condition was native species composition, while all other indicators and metrics warranted either moderate or significant concern. The faunal biological components examined included birds, herptiles, and mammals. Birds (unchanging trend) and herptiles (no trend determined) warrant moderate concern, while mammal populations warrant significant concern (no trend determined). The confidence of both herptiles and mammals was low due to length of time since data were last collected. Current forest structure within and surrounding LIBO generally reflects the historical overstory composition but changes in the hardwood forest at LIBO and the surrounding area have resulted in declines in the avian fauna of the region since the 1970s. The decline in woodland bird populations has been caused by multiple factors including the conversion of hardwood forest to other land cover types, habitat fragmentation, and increasing human population growth. The identification of data gaps during the course of the assessment is an important NRCA outcome. Resource-specific details are presented in each resource section. In some cases, significant data gaps contributed to the resource not being evaluated or low confidence in the condition or trend being assigned to a resource. Primary data gaps and uncertainties encountered were lack of recent survey data, uncertainties regarding reference conditions, availability of consistent long-term data, and the need for more robust or sensitive sampling designs. Impacts associated with development outside the park will continue to stress some resources. Regionally, the direct and indirect effects of climate change are likely but specific outcomes are uncertain. Nonetheless, within the past several decades, some progress has been made toward restoring the quality of natural resources within the park, most notably the forested environments. Regional and park-specific mitigation and adaptation strategies are needed to maintain or improve the condition of some resources over time. Success will require acknowledging a ?dynamic change context? that manages widespread and volatile problems while confronting uncertainties, managing natural and cultural resources simultaneously and interdependently, developing disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge, and establishing connectivity across broad landscapes beyond park borders.

Streszczenie:
The objective of the Lowermost Mississippi River Management Program is to move the nation toward more holistic management of the lower reaches of the Mississippi River through the development and use of a science-based decision-making framework. There has been substantial investment in the last decade to develop multidimensional numerical models to evaluate the Lowermost Mississippi River (LMMR) hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and salinity dynamics. The focus of this work plan is to leverage the existing scientific knowledge and models to improve holistic management of the LMMR. Specifically, this work plan proposes the development of a real-time forecasting (RTF) system for water, sediment, and selected nutrients in the LMMR. The RTF system will help inform and guide the decision-making process for operating flood-control and sediment-diversion structures. This work plan describes the primary components of the RTF system and their interactions. The work plan includes descriptions of the existing tools and numerical models that could be leveraged to develop this system together with a brief inventory of existing real-time data that could be used to validate the RTF system. A description of the tasks that would be required to develop and set up the RTF system is included together with an associated timeline.
