The essays in this symposium on the work of Dirk Hartog encompass meditations on legal positivism and the histories of slavery, civil rights, and women’s rights as well as contemporary analyses of spousal abuse and the dependency of adult children. That wide range of subjects, approaches, and concerns might be puzzling were it not for the wide substantive, methodological, and theoretical range in Hartog’s own oeuvre. Hartog’s work has been so generative for other scholars because of his simultaneous engagement with history and law, with fact and theory, with the whole sweep of the nineteenth century and the most minute detail of a person’s life. In describing in this introduction what makes Hartog Hartog, I emphasize the unique blend of professional commitments and personal sensibilities he brings to his work: the sensitivity with which he approaches history; the humanity with which he treats his historical subjects; the dexterity with which he analyzes the law; and the sophistication with which his human and legal stories yield up jurisprudential insights. I also, respectfully, disagree with Hartog himself on the essence of his work. Where he laments that he exists in a “muddle in the middle”—writing histories of a problematic “inbetweenness”—I see him as making the messy lived reality of legal history cognizable to modern reader. His work reveals the simultaneity of multiple and overlapping legal regimes as they shaped and were shaped by the human needs of real people.

Conservation translocations have become increasingly popular for ‘rewilding’ areas that have lost their native fauna. These multispecies translocations are complex and need to consider the requirements of each individual species as well as the influence of likely interactions among them. The Dirk Hartog Island National Park Ecological Restoration Project, Return to 1616, aspires to restore ecological function to Western Australia’s largest island. Since 2012, pest animals have been eradicated, and conservation translocations of seven fauna species have been undertaken, with a further six planned. Here, we present a synthesis of the innovative approaches undertaken in restoring the former faunal assemblage of Dirk Hartog Island and the key learnings gathered as the project has progressed.

Conservation practitioners require cost-effective and repeatable remotely sensed data for assistive monitoring. This paper tests the ability of standard remotely piloted aircraft (DJI Phantom 4 Pro) imagery to discriminate between plant species in a rangeland environment. Flights were performed over two 0.3–0.4 ha exclusion plot sites, established as controls to protect vegetation from translocated animal disturbance on Dirk Hartog Island, Western Australia. Comparisons of discriminatory variables, classification potential, and optimal flight height were made between plot sites with different plant species diversity. We found reflectance bands and height variables to have high differentiation potential, whilst measures of texture were less useful for multisegmented plant canopies. Discrimination between species varied with omission errors ranging from 13 to 93%. Purposely resampling c. 5 mm imagery as captured at 20–25 m above terrain identified that a flight height of 120 m would improve capture efficiency in future surveys without hindering accuracy. Overall accuracy at a site with low species diversity (n = 4) was 70%, which is an encouraging result given the imagery is limited to visible spectral bands. With higher species diversity (n = 10), the accuracy reduced to 53%, although it is expected to improve with additional bands or grouping like species. Findings suggest that in rangeland environments with low species diversity, monitoring using a standard RPA is viable.

Female sea turtles are promiscuous, with clutches of eggs often sired by multiple males and rates of multiple paternity varying greatly within and across species. We investigated levels of multiple paternity in loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from three rookeries in Western Australia by analysing polymorphic species-specific genetic markers. We predicted that the level of multiple paternity would be related to female population size and hence the large rookery at Dirk Hartog Island would have higher rates of multiple paternity than two smaller mainland rookeries at Gnaraloo Bay and Bungelup Beach. Contrary to our prediction, we found highly variable rates of multiple paternity among the rookeries that we sampled, which was unrelated to female population size (25% at Bungelup Beach, 86% at Gnaraloo Bay, and 36% at Dirk Hartog Island). Approximately 45 different males sired 25 clutches and the average number of sires per clutch ranged from 1.2 to 2.1, depending on the rookery sampled. The variance in rates of multiple paternity among rookeries suggests that operational sex ratios are variable in Western Australia. Periodic monitoring would show whether the observed patterns of multiple paternity for these three rookeries are stable over time, and our data provide a baseline for detecting shifts in operational sex ratios.

The white-winged fairy-wren (Malurus leucopterus) exhibits striking plumage colour variation between the Australian mainland and two islands (Dirk Hartog Island and Barrow Island) off the coast of Western Australia. Adult males on the mainland are bright blue with white wings and adult males on the two islands are black with white wings. To examine evolutionary relationships within this species, we sequenced 980 base pairs of two mitochondrial genes from 34 individuals from both islands and five mainland sites. Birds on Barrow Island were the most genetically distinct. Specimens from Dirk Hartog shared a unique character with, and were most similar to, birds from the Western Australian mainland. The black-and- white-plumaged subspecies from the two islands were not each other's closest relatives. Mapping of plumage evolution produced two equally parsimonious hypotheses: (1) black plumage arose from blue plumage convergently on the two islands, or (2) black plumage arose from blue plumage once and was followed by a re-evolution of blue plumage in mainland Western Australia birds. Levels of genetic differentiation in this species were low but genetic differentiation was discovered between morphologically identical eastern and western populations of the mainland subspecies, which is evidence for a current barrier to gene flow on mainland Australia.

The burrowing buttong (Bettongia lesueur) has been extinct on mainland Australia since the early 1960s, but was believed to persist on four islands off the coast of Western Australia-Bernier, Dorre, Barrow and Boodie. We surveyed these islands in 1988-89 to ascertain the status of bettongs and other endangered mammals. Bettongs were widespread and comparatively abundant on three islands but absent from the fourth. Bettongs occurred at estimated densities of c. 14-17km-2 on Bernier, Dorre and Barrow Islands, suggesting approximate minimum populations of 650, 1000 and 3400 respectively and a total minimum population for the species of c. 5000 individuals. It would appear that a poisoning campaign in 1985 to eliminate Rattus rattus from Boodie Island also eliminated the bettong. The burrowing bettong has apparently been absent from a fifth island and its type locality, Dirk Hartog Island in Shark Bay, since early this century. The vulnerability of this species is highlighted by its extinction on mainland Australia and by the loss of two of its five island populations. It now occupies less than 0.01% of its historical range. Its status as rare and endangered is justified.

Feralization is the process of domesticated animals returning to the wild and it is considered the counterpart of domestication. Molecular genetic changes are well documented in domesticated organisms but understudied in feral populations. In this study, the genetic differentiation between domestic and feral cats was inferred by analysing whole-genome sequencing data of two geographically distant feral cat island populations, Dirk Hartog Island (Australia) and Kaho’olawe (Hawaii) as well as domestic cats and European wildcats. The study investigated population structure, genetic differentiation, genetic diversity, highly differentiated genes, and recombination rates. Genetic structure analyses linked both feral cat populations to North American domestic and European cat populations. Recombination rates in feral cats were lower than in domestic cats but higher than in wildcats. For Australian and Hawaiian feral cats, 105 and 94 highly differentiated genes compared to domestic cats respectively, were identified. Annotated genes had similar functions, with almost 30% of the divergent genes related to nervous system development in both feral groups. Twenty mutually highly differentiated genes were found in both feral populations. Evolution of highly differentiated genes was likely driven by specific demographic histories, the relaxation of the selective pressures associated with domestication, and adaptation to novel environments to a minor extent. Random drift was the prevailing force driving highly divergent regions, with relaxed selection in feral populations also playing a significant role in differentiation from domestic cats. The study demonstrates that feralization is an independent process that brings feral cats on a unique evolutionary trajectory.

In July 1989, dugongs were counted from the air at an overall sampling intensity of 7.9% over 14 239 km2 in Shark Bay, Western Australia. Counts were corrected for perception bias (the proportion of dugongs visible in the transect that are missed by observers), and standardised for availability bias (the proportion of animals invisible because of water turbidity) with survey-specific correction factors. The resultant minimum population estimate was 10146 � 1665 (s.e.) dugongs at an overall density of 0.71 � 0.12 (s.e.) dugongs km-2, the highest density ever recorded on a large-scale dugong survey. The proportion of calves (19%) was higher than for most other dugong surveys conducted in Shark Bay and elsewhere, suggesting an exceptionally high calving rate in 1988. Dugong density was highest (>5 km-2) in relatively deep water (12-16 m) in the eastern half of Shark Bay opposite the tip of Peron Peninsula and in the western Bay opposite the northern half of Dirk Hartog Island. Fewer than 4% of dugongs sighted in Shark Bay during the survey were in waters colder than 18�C. Results of aerial surveys over 906 km2 in the Faure Sill region of the eastern Bay in November 1990 and January 1991 suggest that between a third and a half of the dugongs in Shark Bay are located in this region during the summer. In contrast, only one dugong was sighted there during the winter survey. The survey confirms that Shark Bay is an internationally significant dugong habitat.

The purposes of this study are (1) to determine how much knowledge high school students in Pekanbaru have about the historical sites of Senapelan Harbor. (2) to determine the effectiveness of the field trip method and digital maps in fostering the love of high school students for the local history of Senapelan Harbor. (3) to find out how much student achievement in learning local history has increased, by using the historical tourism work research method, based on digital maps.

The results showed that the people of Sungai Harang always recite Al Fatihah, Al Ikhlas, An Falaq and An Nâs at every activity bahuma. The community interprets that the recitation is to get blessings, habl min al bi'ah and a means to get closer and ask for protection from Allah Al Qur’an adalah pedoman utama bagi umat Islam dalam menghadapi pelbagai problematika kehidupan. Al Qur’an tidak hanya sekedar dibaca dan dipahami maknanya, namun juga di integrasikan dalam banyak kegiatan sosial dan budaya, bahkan dianggap sebagai suatu hal yang harus dilakukan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Subjek penelitian adalah masyarakat dan tokoh agama Desa Sungai Harang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa masyarakat Sungai Harang selalu membaca surah Al Fatihah, Al Ikhlas, An Falaq serta An Nâs pada setiap kegiatan bahuma. Mineralogy of phosphatized and zeolitized hydrogenous cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts from Dirck Hartog Ridge (DHR), the Perth Abyssal Plain (PAP), formed on an altered basaltic substrate, is described. Detail studies of crusts were conducted using optical transmitted light microscopy, X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF), Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA). The major Fe-Mn mineral phases that form DHR crusts are low-crystalline vernadite, asbolane and a feroxyhyte-ferrihydrite mixture. Accessory minerals are Ca-hydroxyapatite, zeolites (Na-phillipsite, chabazite, heulandite-clinoptilolite), glauconite and several clay minerals (Fe-smectite, nontronite, celadonite) are identified in the basalt-crust border zone. The highest Ni, Cu and Co contents are observed in asbolane and Mn-(Fe) vernadite. There is significant enrichment of Ti in feroxyhyte−ferrihydrite and vernadite. The highest rare earth element (REE) content is measured in the phosphate minerals, less in phyllosilicates and Na-phillipsite. The geochemical composition of minerals in the DHR crusts supports the formation of crusts by initial alteration, phosphatization and zeolitization of the substrate basalts followed by oscillatory Fe-Mn oxyhydroxides precipitation of hydrogenous vernadite (oxic conditions) and diagenous asbolane (suboxic conditions).

Suicide survivors are families or close relatives who experienced the loss of a loved one due to suicide. Survivors need time to process grief longer than the others due to the lingering guilt related to the 'failure' to save the suicide victim. One of the psychiatric disorders that appears comorbid with this grief is major depression, especially major depression with psychosis. This research is a case study of how empty chair therapy can be applied to suicide survivors who experience depression with psychosis. The results showed that empty chair therapy was able to help participants identify the source of unfinished business which caused participants to feel guilty and harbor it, risking one to suicidal ideation and auditory hallucinations. Empty chair therapy was also able to facilitate participants to channel feelings of guilt and help gain a new perspective on the situation through changing roles in therapy.Penyintas bunuh diri merupakan anggota keluarga atau teman dekat yang mengalami kehilangan sosok yang dicintai akibat bunuh diri. Penyintas membutuhkan waktu untuk memproses kedukaan lebih lama daripada sosok lainnya akibat rasa bersalah yang berkaitan dengan ‘kegagalan’ menyelamatkan sosok terkait. Salah satu gangguan psikiatri yang muncul komorbid dengan kedukaan ini adalah depresi mayor, terkhusus depresi mayor dengan psikotik. Penelitian ini merupakan studi kasus penerapan terapi kursi kosong pada penyintas bunuh diri yang mengalami depresi dengan psikotik melalui single case method dengan desain penelitian A-B yang mengukur perbedaan perilaku sebelum dan sesudah intervensi.. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa terapi kursi kosong mampu membantu partisipan untuk mengidentifikasi sumber unfinished business yang menyebabkan partisipan merasa bersalah dan memendamnya sehingga memunculkan ide bunuh diri dan halusinasi auditori. Terapi kursi kosong juga mampu memfasilitasi partisipan untuk menyalurkan perasaan bersalah dan membantu mendapatkan perspektif baru dari situasi tersebut melalui perubahan peran dalam terapi.

Tanah Pusako Tinggi di dalam Adat Minangkabau merupakan bagian dari harta pusako tinggi yang diwarisi secara turun temurun dari Niniak kepada Mamak dan dari Mamak kepada Kamanakan. Pembagian tanah pusako tinggi dikenal dengan istilah Ganggam Bauntuak yang berarti diturunkan berdasarkan pertalian darah seketurunan ibu dan dikuasai dengan hak kolektif bersama dalam suatu kaum. Penguasaan dan pengelolaan tanah pusako tinggi beresiko menimbulkan sengketa yang terjadi di dalam ataupun diluar kaum. Berkaitan dengan ini, Kerapatan Adat Nagari berperan sebagai lembaga peradilan adat untuk menyelesaikan berbagai persengketaan yang diajukan oleh masyarakat nagari melalui jalan musyawarah untuk mencapai mufakat perdamaian. Penelitian ini mengkaji bagaimana mekanisme penyelesaian sengketa harato pusako tinggi oleh lembaga Kerapatan Adat Nagari Limau Purut dan bagaimana tinjauan Fiqh Siyasah Dusturiyah terhadap putusan dari Kerapatan Adat Nagari Limau Purut dalam menyelesaikan sengketa harato pusako tinggi. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah Yuridis Sosiologis dengan jenis Kualitatif. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian diambil kesimpulan bahwa penyebab terjadinya sengketa tanah pusako tinggi antara pihak A Cs sebagai penggugat dengan pihak BH Cs sebagai tergugat adalah karena adanya pengajuan permohonan untuk pengeluaran surat kepemilikan tanah atas nama BH Cs kepada KAN Limau Purut diatas tanah yang sudah dihibahkan oleh leluhur dari pihak penggugat A Cs. Pihak A Cs merasa hibah tersebut tidak sah karena tidak adanya pembuktian yang kuat menurut kesaksian kaumnya, sementara itu pihat tergugat A Cs melampirkan bukti surat tebus gadai dan hibah sebagai pembelaan diri. Mekanisme penyelesaian sengketa ini dilaksanakan sesuai dengan ketentuan adat bajanjang naiak batanggo turun dengan upaya putusan perdamaian berdasarkan adaik basandi syara’, syara’ basandi kitabullah yang mengacu pada konsep Islam fiqh siyasah dusturiyah dalam pengambilan putusan berpedoman dengan kaidah-kaidah Siyasah Dusturiyah yakni merundingkan, mengaktualisasikan, dan memberlakukan putusan.

Dans sa dernière livraison (n° 218, 2016), la revue L’Homme consacre notamment deux articles aux analyses fameuses que Jean-Pierre Vernant a naguère consacrées au mythe hésiodique des races. Le premier, «Jean-Pierre Vernant et l’analyse structurale. Le mythe hésiodique des races » , rédigé par Aurélien Gros, qui a récemment soutenu une thèse le 7 mars 2015 sous la direction de François Hartog et intitulée L’anthropologie historique de Jean‑Pierre Vernant. Enquête épistémologique, tente d’expliquer comment l’helléniste articulait de manière originale la psychologie historique d’Ignace Meyerson et l’anthropologie structurale de Claude Lévi-Strauss. Cette articulation serait à l’origine de l’anthropologie historique. Le second, «Le mythe hésiodique des races, oeuvre de langage. Jean‑Pierre Vernant et après » , écrit par Pierre Judet de La Combe, souligne l’intérêt qu’il y a à intégrer une dimension pragmatique à cette analyse structurale du mythe, c’est-à-dire à considérer l’intervention singulière d’Hésiode sur le matériau mythique. Or, lorsque sont rappelés le contexte intellectuel et académique des années 1950 et 1960 et les principes de l’analyse structurale lévi-straussienne des mythes, le rapport de Jean-Pierre Vernant au structuralisme apparaît comme critique. Derrière son «Essai d’analyse structurale » , l’helléniste proposait en réalité une démarche différente de celle de Claude Lévi-Strauss. À l’aune de ce qui apparaît surtout comme une analyse sociologique, le mythe des races, tout autant rapporté que composé par Hésiode, témoigne d’un temps présent conçu comme indéterminé duquel le poète tente de faire surgir un ordre, celui de la justice (dikê), dans un récit mythique rendant compte de la genèse et de la structure de son monde social.

The conflict in Syria created a dire humanitarian situation, as nations around the world struggled with how best to deal with the more than 6.6 million Syrian refugees who fled their homes to escape aggression. Resistance to granting refugee status to individuals often originates in the belief that the influx of refugees endangers national security because of the presumably extremist religious and political beliefs that refugees hold. The present research surveyed Syrian refugees residing in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, and Iraq ( N = 1,000). The results revealed that the majority of surveyed refugees did not intend to migrate to the West and would rather return to their home country. More importantly, refugees most interested in moving to Western countries were the least likely to subscribe to Islamist extremism or to harbor negative sentiment toward the West. Theoretical and practical implications for addressing the current refugee crisis are discussed.

Abstract In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, the American Dream of material success and economic stability is interpreted as a nightmare devoid of reality. The existential concerns of the ranch workers in this novel and their dire poverty shatter their faith in its seemingly unattainable ideals. Throughout this narrative, Steinbeck suggests that this Dream has transformed into a horror for diligent workers who harbor little optimism about achieving their aspirations in a violent and morally corrupt society. Marxist critics, among others, view the American Dream skeptically, arguing that it suppresses the awareness of the lower classes by attributing their failures to laziness, thus perpetuating their exploitation by capitalists. The characters’ harsh existence in Steinbeck’s narrative dismantles the widely held belief that hard work inevitably leads to success, prompting skeptics to question the validity of this national promise of prosperity, home ownership, and job security.

Fibrolamellar carcinoma (FLC) is a rare liver cancer that disproportionately affects adolescents and young adults. Currently, no standard of care is available and there remains a dire need for new therapeutics. Most patients harbor the fusion oncogene DNAJB1-PRKACA (DP fusion), but clinical inhibitors are not yet developed and it is critical to identify downstream mediators of FLC pathogenesis. Here, we identify long noncoding RNA LINC00473 among the most highly upregulated genes in FLC tumors and determine that it is strongly suppressed by RNAi-mediated inhibition of the DP fusion in FLC tumor epithelial cells. We show by loss- and gain-of-function studies that LINC00473 suppresses apoptosis, increases the expression of FLC marker genes, and promotes FLC growth in cell-based and in vivo disease models. Mechanistically, LINC00473 plays an important role in promoting glycolysis and altering mitochondrial activity. The purpose of this review is to succinctly examine the methodologies used in lipid raft research in the brain and to highlight the drawbacks of some investigative approaches. Lipid rafts are biochemically and biophysically different from the bulk membrane. A specific lipid environment within membrane domains provides a harbor for distinct raftophilic proteins, all of which in concert create a specialized platform orchestrating various cellular processes. Studying lipid rafts has proved to be arduous due to their elusive nature, mobility, and constant dynamic reorganization to meet the cellular needs. Studying neuronal lipid rafts is particularly cumbersome due to the immensely complex regional molecular architecture of the central nervous system. Biochemical fractionation, performed with or without detergents, is still the most widely used method to isolate lipid rafts. However, the differences in solubilization when various detergents are used has exposed a dire need to find more reliable methods to study particular rafts. Biochemical methods need to be complemented with other approaches such as live-cell microscopy, imaging mass spectrometry, and the development of specific non-invasive fluorescent probes to obtain a more complete image of raft dynamics and to study the spatio-temporal expression of rafts in live cells.

Numerous risk factors for heart disease or dementia harbor over 10% valine plus glycine content. Interestingly, TDP-43 contains 6.0% valine and 13.3% glycine, and the buildup of this protein in the brains of patients with limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy has dire consequences. The two γ-methyl groups in valine enable hyperconjugation, which enhances the van der Waals interaction between its side group and the carbonyl carbon. This extends the C=O bond length, and this weakened C=O bond augments the secondary chemical bonding of the carbonyl oxygen atom to cations. This, in turn, promotes the formation and buildup of insoluble and rigid salts such as calcium oxalate, which is postulated to be a major cause of heart disease. Similarly, the long C=O bond length in glycine results in a weakened C=O bond with an enhanced affinity toward cations and the formation of insoluble salts. Further, several prion proteins possess a high glycine content of approximately 20%. The insoluble calcium salts produced may promote aggregate formation via secondary chemical bonding between calcium and glycine, as well as between calcium and valine. Chemical and biochemical insights will help us to better understand the etiology of disorders linked to protein aggregates.

Myristica swamps are one of the rarest wetland ecosystems within the sub-tropical evergreen forests of the Western Ghats, India. As their name indicates, they harbor trees belonging to the ancient family Myristicaceae. Due to the waterlogged conditions and high humic decomposition, these swamps are acidic, harbor rare and endemic biotas, and provide ecosystem services to humans. Monitoring this rare ecosystem is crucial because the swamps that once formed a large hydrological network across the Western Ghats are now confined to isolated patches due to human disturbance such as agricultural interventions, roads, and dam construction. Due to the change in land use, there is also a drastic change in water chemistry and associated biodiversity. Biomonitoring is more precise than physical and chemical monitoring. So, the current study aimed to undertake a comprehensive analysis of the physical, chemical, and biological assessment of these swamps. The diatom assemblages are strongly affected by water chemistry and serve as a powerful indicator of environmental changes in the freshwater aquatic systems. However, there is no information on diatom assemblages in these swamps, and the present study aimed to determine the diatom assemblage structure in the Myristica swamps and their response to changing water quality. Diatom samples were taken at 17 different swamps across the central Western Ghats, and a set of environmental parameters was evaluated. Analysis revealed a total of 91 species of diatoms belonging to 27 genera across the 17 sites, from which 44 diatom species showed restricted distribution to this unique environment. Overall, the dominant diatom genera inside the swamps included, Navicula (19.8%), Gomphonema (16%), Eunotia (13.3%), Ulnaria (9.4%), Achnanthidium (8%), Frustulia (6.2%), Planothidium (5.2%), and Brachysira (2.8%). High diatom species richness was observed in the swamps having less anthropogenic disturbance, and diatom assemblage composition was primarily determined by dissolved oxygen, pH, and conductivity. The significant number of geographically restricted taxa in this study points towards our limited understanding of this tropical biome and calls for a dire need for more studies from here, not only to improve our knowledge concerning the diversity, ecology, and biogeography of these diatoms but to further encourage their use in applied (paleo) environmental sciences. Our results indicate that diatoms can prove useful environmental indicators even in harsh environments like swamps and can be a potential tool for assessing ecological and climatic change.

Abstract Since the discovery of DNA repair deficiency as risk factors for breast cancer, our knowledge of their function in maintaining human genomic integrity and a normal biological function has greatly advanced, ultimately culminating in development of PARP inhibitors that can specifically target patients who harbor these mutations. However, to date PARP inhibitors have demonstrated only modest clinical success as monotherapy in triple-negative breast cancer. In addition, conventional therapies are often coupled with severe toxicity. Therefore, there is a dire need to develop more effective combination therapies. Although there are many existing tools to predict possible actionable targets, it remains challenging to effectively and systematically identify drug combinations for better breast cancer therapeutics. This is because most tumors carry multiple genetic alterations that cannot be suppressed with mono-therapies; and diverse confounding factors such as intra-tumor and inter-tumor heterogeneity exist across patient populations. Our preliminary proteomics study has revealed a new protein mark called arginine methylation as a novel target for breast cancer. We found that inhibition of arginine methylation can sensitize cancer cells for PARP inhibition treatment. We further assessed and validated this actionable and synergistic drug combination in patient-derived xenograft models. Together, our novel target combinations discovered here may serve as important biomarkers to help develop more effective combination therapy. Furthermore, our results help uncover patient-specific signaling mechanisms, a critical step towards precision medicine in breast cancer therapy, which is a benefit and potential long-term outcome. The paper aims at investigating the critical opinions about Bernard Shaw’s ambivalent relation to feminism. In this regard, the researchers highlight the emerging role of postfeminism and its overlapping elements with the Islamic portrayal of womanhood. Shaw differs from his predecessors drastically – he portrays independent female characters as compared to the invisible and submissive females of the past. Thus, one of the striking features of Shaw’s drama is the depiction of liberated women. The Shavian women do not consider men folk as their rivals. There is a shift from powerless to empowered women in academia. The researchers find out that there is an ideological conflict between feminism and Islam but as far as postfeminism is concerned, there is none. Rather, postfeminism propagates and supports the Islamic concept of womanhood thoroughly. It is also worth noting that feminist ideas and ideology have greatly dented the social and political fabric of mankind and human civilization in general. Whereas, postfeminism propagates in favor of maintaining a balanced position for womanhood in life which is a balance between social and individual life, and a balance between professional and family life. The purpose of this article is to promote a better understanding of the status of women in Islam and its overlapping and common areas with postfeminism, that is, God has equated female folk at par with their male folk. The research is significant as it challenges the western notion of women in Islam and dispels the erroneous notions of suppression of women in Islam. The prime finding of this research is that postfeminism proclaims equal footing for men and women in life, as enshrined in the Holy Quran. Further, the researchers lament that just because of myopic-minded people, the world is not making any progress intellectually. The researchers recommend that there is a dire need to promote liberal intellectuals like Shaw who harbor no bias against Islam and Muslims to maintain peace and order in the world.

Abstract Ten percent of children with cancer harbor a predisposition mutation, and in children with the kidney cancer, Wilms tumor, the prevalence may be as high as 30%. Whilst clinical management of children with a known predisposition differs from that of children with sporadic Wilms tumors, it is not dependent on the type of predisposition. Some Wilms predispositions are associated with defined histological and clinical features, which suggests differences in the genetic development of such tumors. To investigate this, we assembled a cohort of 137 children with Wilms tumor, of whom 71 were found to have an underlying pathogenic germline or mosaic predisposition variant. Predisposition changes encompassed methylation changes, substitutions, indels, simple rearrangements and more complex ones. Our multi-omic approach detected four novel putative Wilms tumor predisposition genes, and identified causative predisposition variants in children where standard of care assays had failed to do so. We reconstructed the development of 237 neoplasms from zygote via normal kidney tissue, utilizing whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing and genome wide methylation data, and pursued our findings in an independent validation cohort. We found that tumor development differed between predisposed and sporadic cases, and varied amongst predisposed children according to specific mutations and their developmental timing. These differences pervaded the clonal architecture of normal kidneys, and the repertoire of driver events, such as the possibility of acquiring high risk disease variants. A striking absence of additional driver variants were, in particular, noted for WT1 and TRIM28 predisposed tumors. In 20 children we examined the relationship between multiple neoplasms, including bilateral tumors, recurrences, metastases, and leukemias. The tumors from non-predisposed children shared a common tumor trunk, whereas we in many predisposed children saw an extraordinary propensity for independent tumor generation. In conclusion, we examined the somatic evolution of Wilms tumor via normal kidney tissue in predisposed children, and showed that predisposition variants may constrain the somatic genetic development of Wilms tumor. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis. This study uses the CriticalDiscourse Analysis approach developed by Teun A. Van Dijk and uses the descriptivequalitative method. The results obtained in the novel Pulang Tere Liye's text structure isdivided into several elements, namely, macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure.The author's macro structure has the theme of betrayal. There are several stages in thesuperstructure, namely the stages of settlement, conflict arising, increasing conflict, climax,and resolution. Microstructure uses semantics, syntax, stylistic, and rhetoric. Semanticelements are divided into several parts, namely, background, detail and purpose. The settingof this novel are Sumatra, the Jungle Forest of Sumatra, Hong Kong, Tokyo Airport, theCapital Harbor. The details used by the author are more beneficial to him but some aredetrimental to him. The author's intent is stated explicitly and clearly so that the readerunderstands and easily understands the story. In syntax, it is divided into several parts,namely coherence, pronouns, and sentence forms. Other pressures that negatively impact primates are unsustainable bushmeat hunting, the illegal trade of primates as pets and as body parts, expanding road networks in previously isolated areas, zoonotic disease transmission and climate change. Here we examine current and future trends in several socio-economic factors directly or indirectly affecting primates to further our understanding of the interdependent relationship between human well-being, sustainable development, and primate population persistence. We found that between 2001 and 2018 ca 191 Mha of tropical forest (30% canopy cover) were lost as a result of human activities in the five primate range regions. Forty-six percent of this loss was in the Neotropics (Mexico, Central and South America), 30% in Southeast Asia, 21% in mainland Africa, 2% in Madagascar and 1% in South Asia. Countries with the greatest losses (ca 57% of total tree cover loss) were Brazil, Indonesia, DRC, China, and Malaysia. Together these countries harbor almost 50% of all extant primate species. In 2018, the world human population was estimated at ca 8bn people, ca 60% of which were found in primate range countries. Projections to 2050 and to 2100 indicate continued rapid growth of the human populations in these five primate range regions, with Africa surpassing all the other regions and totaling ca 4bn people by the year 2100. Socioeconomic indicators show that, compared to developed nations, most primate range countries are characterized by high levels of poverty and income inequality, low human development, low food security, high levels of corruption and weak governance. Models of Shared Socioeconomic Pathway scenarios (SSPs) projected to 2050 and 2100 showed that whereas practices of increasing inequality (SSP4) or unconstrained growth in economic output and energy use (SSP5) are projected to have dire consequences for human well-being and primate survivorship, practices of sustainability-focused growth and equality (SSP1) are expected to have a positive effect on maintaining biodiversity, protecting environments, and improving the human condition. These results stress that improving the well-being, health, and security of the current and future human populations in primate range countries are of paramount importance if we are to move forward with effective policies to protect the world’s primate species and promote biodiversity conservation.

Abstract Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. and worldwide. Up to 90% of all lung cancers are non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). NSCLC is a complex and highly aggressive disease typical for poor prognosis and high rates of treatment resistance. Clinical management of NSCLC varies according to the stage. High-dose stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is the standard of care for localized non-resectable NSCLC. However, tumor hypoxia is a significant barrier to effective radiation therapy. In the last decade, first line NSCLC treatment has been substantially reinforced with the introduction of immunotherapy targeting immune checkpoints such as programmed cell death 1 (PD-1), yet long-term disease control occurs in less than 25% of NSCLC patients. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms of treatment resistance is essential to address the dire need of introducing novel synergistic therapies to enhance anti-cancer treatment response in refractory NSCLC tumors. The basis of tumor hypoxia has traditionally been attributed to the oxygen supply deficit as malformed tumor vasculature fails to meet the high demand of the rapidly proliferating tumor mass. However, our preliminary analysis of NSCLC patient datasets in the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) PanCancer dataset revealed a significant correlation between high-level expression of nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial subunits essential for oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), and high-level expression of hypoxia-regulated genes (Buffa hypoxia score). Furthermore, we have observed a direct correlation between copy number amplification (CNA) of several OXPHOS genes and hypoxia levels in patient samples. Because mitochondrial function consumes up to 90% of available cellular oxygen, its activity may be indirectly regulating oxygen availability in the tumor microenvironment by rapidly consuming oxygen upon its delivery to the tumor. Moreover, we have identified that almost 40% of NSCLC patients harbor CNA of these essential OXPHOS genes. To provide mechanistic insight into these clinical observations, we have generated mouse syngeneic NSCLC cell lines with modified mRNA expression levels of OXPHOS genes (representing deletion, diploid and amplified number of copies) identified in our screen and observed a direct effect on the rates of mitochondrial oxygen consumption in these cells. Our study investigates the previously unknown role of OXPHOS gene copy number in driving mitochondrial oxygen demand and thus contributing to tumor hypoxia and treatment resistance in NSCLC. Abstract Background: Endocrine therapy(ET) plus CDK4/6 inhibitor (i) is the mainstay for the management of estrogenreceptor-positive (ER+)/HER2- mBC. However, most patients (pts) with ER+ mBCeventually experience disease progression, including development of ESR1mutations (mESR1). Elacestrant, an oral SERD, demonstrated preclinical activity,and clinical activity in a phase 1 trial in ER+ mBC, including responses in ptswith prior fulvestrant, CDK4/6i, and mESR1tumors (Bardia JCO 2021).. Methods: EMERALD(NCT03778931), a multicenter, international, randomized, open-label, controlledphase 3 trial, enrolled postmenopausal pts with ER+/HER2- mBC who had received 1-2prior lines of ET and ≤1 line of chemotherapy in the mBC setting and had prior progressionon a ET plus CDK4/6i. Pts were randomized 1:1 to elacestrant (400 mg orallydaily) or standard of care (SOC; investigator’s choice of fulvestrant or anaromatase inhibitor). Stratification factors included mESR1 status (by central lab), priorfulvestrant exposure, and presence of visceral disease. The study had 2 primary endpoints of progression-free survival (PFS), by blindedindependent review committee, in pts withtumors harboring mESR1 and in all pts (mESR1 or mESR1 notdetected). Secondary endpoints included: overall survival (OS), safety, tolerability,and quality of life. An alpha-value of 0.0475 was used to determine statisticalsignificance (2-sided using the truncated Hochberg procedure).. Results: EMERALD enrolled 477 pts(228 with mESR1) between Feb 2019 - Oct 2020, with 239 pts randomized toreceive elacestrant vs 238 pts to SOC. Demographics and disease characteristicswere well-balanced across treatment arms [median age: 63 yrs vs 63.5 yrs; 2prior lines: 46% vs 40.8%; prior CDK4/6i: 100% in both arms]. The study met bothprimary endpoints. There was a 30% reduction in the risk of progression ordeath in the elacestrant arm in all pts (HR=0.697 [95% CI: 0.552, 0.88]; P=0.0018),and a 45% (HR=0.546 [95% CI: 0.387, 0.768]; P=0.0005) reduction in therisk of progression or death in pts with mESR1.For both endpoints, results in key prespecified subgroups, including visceral metastases,number of prior lines of therapy, pretreatment with fulvestrant, and geographicalregion, were consistent with the overall outcome. The PFS rate at 12 months was 22.32% (95% CI: 15.24%, 29.40%)with elacestrant vs 9.42% (95% CI: 4.02%, 14.81%) with SOC in all pts, and26.76% (95% CI: 16.17%, 37.36%) vs 8.19% (95% CI: 1.26%, 15.12%) in the mESR1 subgroup. The prespecified interim OS analysis plannedat the time of the final PFS analysis (allocated2-sided alpha level of 0.0001) demonstrated a trend in favor of elacestrant inall pts (HR=0.751 [95% CI: 0.542, 1.038]; P=0.0821) and in pts with mESR1(HR=0.592 [95% CI: 0.361, 0.958]; P=0.0325). The final OS analysisis expected next year. Common (>10%) treatment-related adverse events (AEs) withelacestrant vs SOC included: nausea (25.3% vs 8.7%), vomiting (11% vs 2.6%), and fatigue (11% vs 7.9%), mostlygrade 1/2. Treatment-emergent AEs leading to discontinuation of elacestrant orSOC were infrequent in both arms (6.3% and 4.4%). Grade ≥3 treatment-relatedAEs in the elacestrant arm vs SOC were 7.2% vs 3.1%, mainly driven by nausea(2.1% vs 0.9%). There were no treatment-related deaths in either group.. Conclusions:Elacestrant is the first oral SERD to demonstrate a statistically significantand clinically meaningful improvement of PFS vs SOC in a randomized phase 3study in pts with ER+/HER2- mBC in the 2nd/3rd-linesetting, including those whose tumors harbor mESR1. Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) is a hereditary bone marrow failure disorder that is characterized by erythropoiesis failure and chronic anemia and is frequently associated with physical malformations. Considered a ribosomopathy, most patients harbor pathogenic mutations in one of at least 22 large or small ribosomal protein genes in an autosomal dominant manner, however rarer cases involving mutations in GATA1, TSR2 and EPO have also been described. A recent study of the architecture of the human hematopoietic hierarchy throughout development (Notta et al, Science 2016) showed that, after birth, unipotent progenitors can derive directly from multipotent progenitors without intermediate differentiation into oligopotent progenitors. Critically, this work identified novel progenitors for which the abundance, clonal capacity and progenitor function is currently unknown in many benign and malignant hematological disorders. Specifically, multipotent, common myeloid and megakaryocyte-erythroid progenitors (MPP, CMP and MEP) were found to be functionally heterogeneous and could be subdivided (F1, F2 and F3 subtypes) based on the combination of CD71 and BAH1 expression. We hypothesized that in-depth analysis of these novel and previously reported progenitors will better elucidate hematopoiesis in DBA, providing insights in to DBA pathogenesis and erythropoietic failure. Using flow cytometry, we quantified the frequencies of 11 hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) populations: HSC, MPP F1-F3, CMP F1-F3, MEP F1-F3 and granulocyte-monocyte progenitors (GMP), from the BM specimens of 8 DBA patients harboring ribosomal protein mutations and 6 healthy age-matched control donors. To characterize the function of HSPCs in DBA we then utilized a highly sensitive and quantitative single-cell in-vitro stromal feeder-based differentiation assay that supports the expansion and lineage commitment of single HSCPs towards mature cell types (myeloid, erythroid and megakaryocytes) with progeny immunophenotyping and quantification by flow cytometry. Our refined quantification of HSPCs by flow cytometry showed that the defect of erythropoiesis in DBA patients starts at the CMP/MEP compartment. Namely, CMP-F2 and CMP-F3 as well as MEP-F2 and MEP-F3 sub-populations that are predicted to form erythroid cells were significantly reduced in DBA patients compared to healthy aged-matched individuals (Figure 1A-B). In contrast, CMP/MEP-F1 sub-populations that are predicted to form only myeloid cells (BAH1-/CD71-) showed no significant difference compared to healthy controls. Importantly, the multipotent compartment (HSC and MPP) did not significantly differ from that of healthy controls. Functional analysis of F2/F3 CMP/MEP HSCP sub-populations in single-cell colony assays showed that they have a high propensity to produce erythroid progeny in healthy control samples (Figure 1C). In contrast, in DBA patients these HSCPs had limited erythroid forming potential, but maintain a high propensity to develop myeloid colonies (Figure 1D). To our knowledge this is the first study that the HSCP sub-populations F1/F2/F3 HSCP fractions have been analyzed in DBA. Collectively, these data indicate that the hematopoietic defect in DBA occurs in erythroid-producing CMP/MEP populations. Our data show that these sub-populations are both reduced and dysfunctional in DBA patients and we suggest these abnormalities lead to the pure red cell aplasia seen in these patients. Membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) and specifically the anode catalyst are of particular interest in PEM water electrolysis (WE) research as they are considered key components for the capital expenditure and operating expenditure of a PEMWE system (1). An effective method to understand the operation of the MEA is to apply diagnostic tools during the operation of the electrolysis cell. Previous studies in this regard have been mainly limited to the total cell voltage. However, the individual electrode behavior cannot be investigated in the standard setup. To improve the MEA design, the individual electrode behavior is crucial. This can be captured by using a reference electrode (RE). In this work, a salt bridge is used for the first time as RE concept for polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The implementation is shown in figure 1.a. Via a porous transport layer impregnated with Nafion, the reference electrode can access the ionic potential of the catalyst layer under investigation. This isolates the kinetic overvoltage from other cell voltage contributions such as ohmic membrane losses, see figure 1.b. The experiments in this study include polarization curves with conventional materials and operating conditions. In addition, EIS is performed to test the applicability of the measurement method in RE operation. Exemplary results are shown in Figure 1.c. In addition, a previous analysis of RE from fuel and electrolytic cells is presented and a classification by electrode type and positioning is made. The key results are subsequently summarized. First, a distinction is made according to the principle behavior of the electrode or its possible configurations. The principal electrode behavior includes the dynamic hydrogen electrode (DHE), the quasireference electrodes, external REs and other configurations. Concrete concepts follow from this. For example, the DHE can be implemented with two platinum wires. By applying a current in the microampere range, the hydrogen evolution reaction takes place in the presence of water. The platinum wire in hydrogen atmosphere becomes the RE (2). Quasireference electrodes are very commonly used with ionic liquids. They are often metal wires (3). A platinum wire is used in a recent work for recording individual electrochemical impedance spectra of anode and cathode (4). Any type of RE can be used as an external RE, such as the silver-silver chloride electrode. Another possibility is to create a free-standing catalyst strip by laser ablation of the MEA. This strip can be used as a reversible electrode to measure the voltage difference with the active catalyst layer participating in the reaction (5). In addition to the behavior of the electrode, a subdivision is made into the position of the RE. In order to separate the potential of one of the two electrodes from the total potential, the measurement can be made as close as possible to the electrode under investigation. This can be implemented by a direct measurement in the catalyst layer (6) or a special geometry of the active area (7). Alternatively, the potential can be measured at the membrane and a correction of the ohmic membrane losses can be used to infer the electrode potential to be investigated. Here, too, two implementations are possible. On the one hand, the RE can be positioned between two membrane halves (4). On the other hand, the membrane can be contacted outside the active area (8). One requirement chosen for the presented concept is the applicability of the RE independent of the geometry of the MEA. Furthermore, the RE should be insensitive to misalignment of the catalyst layers. The exact alignment of the anodic and cathodic catalyst layers is challenging and even small deviations lead to a shift of the potential in the membrane (8). RESUMEN: El trabajo analiza la regulación de la transparencia y el acceso a la información en las entidades locales vascas. Pone de relieve la necesidad de atender a varios bloques normativos: el estatal, constituido por la Ley 19/2013, de 9 de diciembre, de transparencia, acceso a la información pública y buen gobierno, por una parte, y a la Ley 7/1985, de 2 de abril, reguladora de las Bases del Régimen Local, por otra. El autonómico vasco, integrado por la Ley 2/2016, de 7 de abril, de Instituciones Locales de Euskadi (LILE) y a la que previsiblemente se unirá la futura Ley de Transparencia, participación ciudadana y buen gobierno del sector público vasco. Y el local, constituido por las Ordenanzas que han ido e irán aprobando no pocas entidades locales vascas, que, respetando los bloques normativos estatal y autonómicos pueden concretar para su respectiva entidad aspectos organizativos e ir más allá de las amplias obligaciones ya previstas en la normativa básica estatal y de desarrollo autonómico. En el estudio se analizan los diversos aspectos en juego: el sentido de la transparencia, su reconocimiento en la Constitución y su desarrollo legal anterior a la Ley estatal de transparencia en la legislación estatal general y local, la aprobación de las leyes estatal y autonómicas y su u respectivo ámbito de aplicación, así como el ámbito de decisión de las entidades locales, la nueva regulación en la LILE y las dudas de encaje con el Proyecto de Ley vasca de transparencia, los obligados, los límites, la pu blicidad activa, el derecho de acceso a la información pública o publicidad pasiva,las garantías y, finalmente, la relación de las Leyes de transparencia con elacceso por los concejales a la información municipal. It highlights the need to pay attention to several legal systems: that of the State, with Act 19/2013 of December 9th, on transparency, access to public information and good governance on one hand and that of the Act 7/1985 of April 2nd, governing the bases of the local regime on the other. The Basque autonomous system with Act 2/2016 of April 7th on Local Entities of Euskadi (LILE) and which predictably will also be integrated with the future Act on transparency, citizen participation and good governance within the Basque public sector. And the local, with the ordinances approved and yet to be enacted by not few Basque local entities which if they do not interfere in State and Autonomous systems can specify for its own entity organizational issues and go beyond the broad obligations established by the State basic regulation and that of autonomous development. In this study the different aspects at stake are studied: the meaning of transparency, the acknowledgement by the Constitution and its legal development previous to the State Act on Transparency by the State general and local legislation, the approval of the State and Autonomous acts and their respective scope of application, together with the decision-making scope of local entities, the new regulation by the LILE and the doubts of fitting with the Basque bill on transparency, the persons concerned, the limits, the active advertisement, the right of access to public information or passive advertising, the guarantees and finally the relationship between the Acts of transparency with the access of councilmen and councilwomen to the municipal information.
