This doctoral thesis presents three original research papers investigating aspects of agricultural production in small-farming households in two regions of Ethiopia. While answering specific research questions, the articles are connected and motivated by an interest in essential themes of agricultural development: access to seed, the use and conservation of agrobiodiversity as well as strategies to manage production risk in smallholder agriculture. The first article analyses patterns of agrobiodiversity in three communities with comparatively favourable farming conditions and good market acces

This paper examines the extent to which the economic gains derived from gum and resin commercialization impact rural livelihood improvement under different resource management regimes in the drylands of Ethiopia and Sudan. Primary data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 240 randomly selected small-scale producers in four regions with gradients of resource management regimes. The survey was supplemented by secondary data, group discussions and key informant interviews. In the four regions, gum and resin income contributes to 14%–23% of the small-scale producers’ household in

This thesis challenges the mainstream analyses of hydro-political relations in the Eastern Nile River Basin by providing a more nuanced understanding of the role of power in the management and allocation of water resources. It is argued, in recent years, that the established hegemonic order on the Nile which is underpinned by asymmetric power relations, has been contested through a variety of counter-hegemonic strategies deployed within the Basin. Through an examination of the domestic and international factors which have influenced Ethiopia’s contestation of Egyptian hydro-hegemony, this stud
