Edwardsiid anemones are common elements of the benthic marine infauna. The group is best known and most speciesrich in the North Atlantic. The Pacific fauna is poorly known, with only one species, Edwardsia californica McMurrich, 1913, described from the eastern Pacific Ocean. We describe eight new species collected from sediment in California: Edwardsia handi sp. nov., Edwardsia juliae sp. nov., Edwardsia mcmurrichi sp. nov., Edwardsia olguini sp. nov., Edwardsia profunda sp. nov., Paraedwardsia heia sp. nov., Scolanthus scamiti sp. nov., and Scolanthus triangulus sp. nov. The genus Edwardsia de Quatrefages, 1842 is the group of worm-like sea anemones of the family Edwardsiidae, characterized by having nemathybomes on their body wall and physa at their aboral end. This genus accommodates a lot of species, but only three have been known from Japanese waters. In this study, we report Edwardsia aff. tuberculata Duben and Koren, 1847 and describe a new species E. alternobomen sp. nov. from seas around Japan. Both are characterized by prominent, papillae-like nemathybomes which contain unusually large nematocysts. Some nematocysts of E. alternobomen sp. nov. are over

AbstractEdwardsiidae is one of the most speciose families within order Actiniaria with ~75 valid species of burrowing sea anemones. Five edwardsiids have been recorded in South Atlantic waters with only two species known for Brazil:Nematostella vectensisandEdwardsia migottoi. Such low diversity is probably the result of a historical small number of specialists in the region combined with difficulties in collecting and identifying these small burrowing animals. Although edwardsiids have been reported from Brazil since at least the 1960s, these reports did not include proper descriptions or spec

Life histories unfold within the ecological context of an organism's environment, and thus are intimately linked to organismal fitness. The evolution of alternate life history strategies, either within or between taxa, can profoundly affect ontogeny, ecology, and population dynamics. Many cnidarians (sea anemones, corals, jellyfish, etc.) exhibit complex life histories involving sexual reproduction and multiple modes of asexual reproduction. Sea anemones of the family Edwardsiidae exemplify this complexity, and are therefore an attractive system for studying the developmental and ecological
