This thesis deals with the time-domain analysis of switched linear networks and investigates inherent problems which have to be considered when analyzing this class of networks. Computer simulation requires the use of numerical methods and we focus on the transmission -line modelling technique (TLM) and the numerical inverse Laplace transform. Conventionally, system simulations of induction motor drives use lumped parameters model of the motor. This approach assumes motor parameters to be constant during the entire operation of the drive. Unfortunately, these are known to vary significantly over the operating range of the motor due to factors such as magnetic saturation, skin effects, and operating temperature. An overview of DC/DC converters is given. The operation of the buck converter and the series resonant converter is explained. The advantages and disadvantages of series, parallel, and series-parallel resonant circuits are examined. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of the clamped series resonant converter when compared to the buck converter are discussed. Both circuits are simulated on the general circuit simulation program SPICE. Lab measurements taken for the series resonant converter are compared to the simulated results from SPICE.

Using the program, the values of the inductor and capacitor of the resonant tank can be easily determined to meet design specifications. Following the design, a dc analysis is performed to determine such salient parameters as peak inductor current and peak capacitor voltage.
