10608 Background: The transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) has a dual role in cancer, but in the prevention of tumorigenesis, TGF-β signaling inhibits cell cycle progression through an increase in cell cycle inhibitors and decrease in cell cycle activators. The adaptor protein embryonic liver fodrin (ELF) is crucial for normal TGF-β signaling. ELF facilitates the association and nuclear translocation of the TGF-β signaling proteins, Smad3 and Smad4. We have demonstrated that elf± mice develop hepatocellular cancers (HCC) spontaneously within 12 months. We have also shown that most human HCCs d

Previous studies have shown that the male reproductive system is one of the most sensitive organs to electromagnetic radiation. However, the biological effects and molecular mechanism are largely unclear. Our study was designed to elucidate the epigenetic effects of 50 Hz ELF-EMFin vitro. Mouse spermatocyte-derived GC-2 cell line was exposed to 50 Hz ELF-EMF (5 min on and 10 min off) at magnetic field intensity of 1 mT, 2 mT, and 3 mT with an intermittent exposure for 72 h. We found that 50 Hz ELF-EMF exposure decreased genome-wide methylation at 1 mT, but global methylation was higher at 3 mT

Abstract The Ets transcription factors regulate a wide variety of biologic processes. Several members have been shown to play a role in regulating angiogenesis and vascular development. For example, the Ets factor ELF-1 is enriched in the developing vasculature of the embryo, where it regulates the expression of the Tie2 gene. We have determined that ELF-1 and Tie2 expression is also enriched in tumor blood vessels, and have identified a short peptide, 34 amino acids in length, corresponding to the terminal portion of the highly conserved ETS domain that potently blocks the function of ELF-1.

Apoptosis in acute stroke is associated with a negative prognosis and is correlated with the severity of the neurological deficit. However, there is no evidence that indicates that, in the subacute phase of the stroke, the apoptosis process might activate neuroplasticity. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the effect of an extremely low frequency electromagnetic field (ELF-EMF) on the molecular mechanism of apoptosis, as used in the rehabilitation of post-stroke patients. Patients with moderate stroke severity (n = 48), 3–4 weeks after incident, were enrolled in the analysis and divided

Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death among women. Recently, extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field (ELF-EMF) has been proposed as a new interfering agent with future therapeutic potentials. Many studies have revealed that cellular processes such as apoptosis in breast cancer are affected by ELF-EMFs. However, more researches are needed to clarify the underlying mechanism of action for these fields. In this study, the apoptotic effect of ELF-EMF on the MC4L2 cell line was examined and the mRNA expression level of the P21 and P38 genes were further

At the crossroads of English as a lingua franca (ELF) research and interpreting studies, it is paramount to examine why interpreters are at odds with ELF communication in general and with the effects of the output of the growing number of non-native English conference speakers on their work in particular. On the basis of a small-scale case study, the stumbling blocks resulting from non-native English input are examined. The findings point toward what may be a major impediment: activation and retrieval constraints can result from ELF speakers’ restricted power of expression and have an adverse

The CD3ζ chain is indispensable for coupling antigen recognition to T cell response. During HIV infection, a down-modulation of CD3ζ was found on T cells, contributing to T cell anergy. It has been shown that circulating myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSC) are elevated in HIV+ patients, and correlate with disease progression. In this work, we studied the correlation between MDSC frequency and T cell CD3ζ expression. Moreover, we investigated the mechanisms of CD3ζ decrease exploited by MDSC. CD3ζ expression and MDSC frequency were evaluated by flow cytometry on PBMC from 105 HIV+
