Multiple sclerosis is a disease of unknown etiology characterized by inflammory demyelination of the brain and spinal cord. Epidemiological investigations play important role in study of multiple sclerosis. Geographical distribution of the disease has been described in terms of prevalence and incidence. The possible role of environmental factors as a cause of multiple sclerosis had been hypothesized with observation of unequal geographic distribution of the disease. More interesting, in terms of their biological significance, are attempts to identify associations between multiple sclerosis and

Many individual environmental risk factors may impinge on development (poverty, mental illness, minority status, and many others), but the most detrimental effects are caused when multiple risk factors act on a single infant. Falls occur because of factors relating to the individual, the environment and the care and support available. As people age, the risk of falls increases. That risk is further increased when a person is unwell and when the person moves to a new environment. The environment where the older person is cared for can reduce or increase the risk of falls and injury. This article, the fifth in a series, explains how staff can minimise the risk of falls in hospitals, care homes and also the person's own home. It usually strikes during young adulthood, and 2.5 million individuals are estimated to have the disease worldwide. The causes of MS are not known, but several factors have been shown to be associated with the risk of the disease, including certain genes, vitamin D, smoking and Epstein- Barr virus infection. Little is known about how/if these factors interact. Methods Study I: The risk of MS by month of birth was investigated using MS cases from the Swedish MS registry and using general populati

The traditional approach to evaluate the viability of corrosion inhibition combines an assessment of corrosion inhibitor efficiency and availability. It is often assumed that an inhibited rate of 0.1mm/year can be achieved and focus is given to the desired availability. New projects are exploiting reservoirs with fluids of increasing complexity and more aggressive environments. Therefore, achieving a high inhibitor efficiency

However, few studies have examined jointly their specific impact and whether country characteristics change the probability of being depressed. In general, this is due to the use of single-country databases. The aim of this paper is to extend previous findings by employing a much larger dataset and including the country effects mentioned above. The paper estimates probit models with country effects and explores linkages between specific environmental factors and depression using dat

Physical inactivity is a risk factor for numerous chronic diseases, and a mounting global health problem. It is likely that the outdoor physical environment, together with social environmental factors, has a tendency to either promote or discourage physical activity, not least in cities and other urban areas. However, the evidence base on this is sparse, making it hard to identify the best policy interventions to make, at the local or city level. This study seeks to assess the impact of one such intervention, the Connswater Community Greenway CCG), in Belfast, in Northern Ireland, UK. To do th

The primary objective of this research was to characterize the environmental and health impacts of wildland and structural, large-scale fire events. This research sets out to comprehensively evaluate the factors which control the degree of impact, the types of chemicals that have been measured in air, soil, and water, the advantages and limitations of current impact tracking, and quantification methods for large-scale events. An initial step in large-scale fire risk mitigation is hazard characterization; a hazard cannot be reasonably controlled if it is not well defined and understood. With th
