Streszczenie:
Abstract The apocryphal scripture “Epistula Apostolorum” represents an important stage in the second century development of the concept regarding the resurrection of the flesh. For the first time, in this text, the Lord’s resurrected body appears with the closely related promise of resurrection for the faithful, which is placed at the center of the discussion in the post-apostolic age. Thus, the crucial question arises: How is the idea of the resurrection of the flesh represented in the Epistula Apostolorum? The epistle provides the following answer: The resurrected receive an everlasting garment that no longer participates in the material creation. Nevertheless, the personality of those living on earth is preserved through the resurrection of the flesh. They do not exchange their identity as a result of the eschatological event; rather they maintain their former earthly personhood, but will exist in a glorified state of the resurrected flesh.

Dissertatiuncula haec duabus partibus constat. In priore generaliter nomen atque notio locutionis „familia christiana uti Ecclesia domestica”, cuius auctor S. Joannes Chrysostomus invenitur, et quae fundamentum in fontibus biblicis, praesertim in Actis Apostolorum et epistolis S. Pauli Apostoli habet, exponuntur, in altera autem plurimae enuntiationes Episcopi Constantinopolitani, quae familiam christianam Ecclesiae similem faciunt, adducuntur; quae autem in tribus collectae sunt: pater familias domi, sicut episcopus in ecclesia, responsabilis magister veritatum fidei esse debeat; favorabilis locus communis orationis ac religiosi cantus, praesertim psalmorum, esse debeat; in familia christiana, sicut in Ecclesia, omnes familiares pares atque hospitales habeantur et se invicem adiuvare necnon diligere debeant.

Streszczenie:
The Gospel of John (GJohn) bears a striking resemblance to two later Jesus books, Epistula Apostolorum (EpAp) and Apocryphon of James (ApocrJas) (NHC I,2), in making authority claims that appeal to the socio-cultural significance of the textual medium. In all three, these claims are twofold: (1) internally ascribing authorship to representative figures of the early Jesus tradition portrayed as literate; (2) explicitly emphasizing the written medium of these authors’ compositions. GJohn can provide an instructive model for understanding these features in EpAp and ApocrJas, as both are demonstrably familiar with GJohn. EpAp and ApocrJas consequently can be examined alongside GJohn’s editorial expansion in ch. 21 as examples of early readers and users of GJohn exhibiting comparable claims regarding literate authors and their texts – applied to the Beloved Disciple (GJohn), the ‘Eleven’ apostles (EpAp) and James (ApocrJas).

Streszczenie:
A perceived inadequacy in existing post-resurrection narratives seems to have inspired the second-century author of the Epistula Apostolorum to compose a comprehensive post-resurrection dialogue. In this—after securing with some difficulty their acceptance that he is truly alive—Jesus answers his disciples’ wide-ranging questions mainly about issues of eschatology and mission. Also present in this text are retrospective summaries of his descent from the heavenly world and his earthly career. While this important though neglected text may usefully be classified with works in a similar format, from Nag Hammadi and elsewhere, its primary affinities are with the traditions of Jesus’ earthly career reflected in Matthew, Luke, and especially John. In particular, the Johannine account of Easter Day and its aftermath provides the author not so much with a normative exemplar as with a source that he exploits freely and critically to develop his proto-orthodox theological agenda.

Streszczenie:
The stories about the deaths of Peter and Paul display variety on a number of details, but many emphasize the unity of the apostles—the concordia apostolorum. The desire to show unity at times went to the point of making the apostles indistinguishable from each other or even confusing Paul and Peter with each other. This chapter will analyze examples of conflated or reversed descriptions of apostolic speech (particularly Peter speaking with Pauline epistolary language), actions, and fates. It will then explore the influence of these examples on later literary traditions and evidence of similar confusion in early Christian art.
