Pełny tekst źródłaSince the time of the New Testament the Eucharist has been in the centre of the life of the Church. Being the sacrament of the reality of a universal redemption and also paschal sacrament, the Eucharist influences the believer's life of faith and existence. At the time when the African continent is changing and finds itself carried away by a spirit of emancipation, the Christian African is summoned to live and celebrate a liberating faith through the Eucharist. The Eucharist indeed is a place for man's humanization. Through it mankind is called to get into communion with God the Creator who is also God the Saviour. This prospect is developed in three stages: redemption for man today in the occidental context, redemption for man in Africa at the dawn of the third millennium and the Eucharist as a means of achieving this redemption

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis tries to answer this existential question : « How the Eucharist, body and blood of Christ, can be spiritual food and sacrament of liberation for nations suffering from hunger ? ». This question has led me to investigate the places where Eucharist calls Humankind to ancharismatic and prophetic attitude when confrontated to dramatic circumstances which provoke/ induce Hunger and Misery in Africa, the geographical place of this study. This Study (Thesis) tries to highlight the moral qualities of Sharing, Solidarity, Communion and Fraternity that are specific to Eucharist, through which this Sacrament can lead African Christians to a total Liberation in Jesus-Christ. In this study, by articulating Eucharist and Liberation, the searcher referes to the african theology of Liberation which he presents as apossibility given to African people to fight against all forms of oppression that denie Mankind and affects the message of Liberation brought by Jesus Christ. The Eucharist is bread of Heaven but also bread for Mankind, opens to life but not to resignation, to false piety and to death

Pełny tekst źródłaThe aim of the dissertation, titled 'The iconography of the Last Supper in Flemish and Dutch painting between the middle of the XVIth century and the middle of the XVIIth century' is to analyze the emergence and development of depictions of Last Supper in the netherlandish painting after the crisis of iconoclasm in 1566 until the middle of the XVIIth century. The thesis aims to put in the context of creation a group of artworks created in a period of strong struggles between the Catholic Church and Protestants. The conflict's core affected the questions of the Eucharist and the religious art, and the depictions of the Last Supper, that is the institution of the eucharistic sacrament by Christ, reflected these issues

Pełny tekst źródłaKey of the understanding of a civilisation, especially a post-christian one, liturgy structured through religious interiority, is both an artistic and communitarian undertaking. The human body appears there, not only as a mediator between adoration. Gesture and the community which organises itself as a communitarian body, but because it is the archetype of symbolic mediation. Through the presence and the ethical, artistic and political use of the body as a fundament of symbol, liturgy can mobilise and engage the human person in all its dimensions to hoist it up, through the receding of the symbol itself, in front of the all-different. In the heart of liturgical sacredness, the body, through its own militations, its vulnerability and the virtual presence of death it contains, is also a reminder of the tragedy of human existence. Hence, it challenges man to a sacrificial surpassingness in unconditional abandon unto his death. In this light, the christian way of confronting death and sacrifice radiates gratuitousness within worship and a unique fraternal communion. In this lucidity and wisdom, it becomes possible to act towards a prophetical and escathological liturgy

Pełny tekst źródłaStarting from a corpus composed of the about forty tragedies based on vetero-testamentary subjects, written in French between 1550 and 1625, this doctorate studies what part tragedy owns to medieval inheritance which it has reformed rather than denied. Noting that between mystery and tragedy there is no rupture but a transition, the thesis details the different movements composing the passage. The protestant spiritual practice, the catholic militant practice being established in their boundaries and defined, as well as a period during which the vetero-testamentary tragedy is no longer the work of authors who don’t use the scriptural material to convert or convince any more, the process of secularisation is then observed through the prism of the contemporary evolution of the eucharistic piety

Pełny tekst źródłaThe study focuses on miracles attributed to the eucharistic species. In the middle of the 11th century, the substantial presence of Christ in the eucharist is conceived in a realistic way, in the context of the Gregorian reform and the controversy raised by Berangar's theology. Miraculous tales produced at the time can be seen not only as a way to illustrate the eucharistic dogma, but also to express a clercical pattern for the whole society. The study follows the chronological order. At first, the narratives associate eucharistic realism with the enhancement of priesthood (1050-1170). Then, a major turn can be stressed between 1170 and 1230. At that time, especially in the Cistercian order, exempla are compiled in a new kind of collections. Miracles take place in the context of « pastoral turn » and the growth of the heresies, which they try to fight. In the two last thirds of the 13th century, the documentation allows us to analyze the place of these miracles in the preaching of the mendicant friars. These use miraculous tales in order to stress upon public manifestations of eucharistic piety as a way for the laity to express its Christian identity. The study ends with the progressive spreading of the new feast dedicated to the corpus Christi to the whole Christianity, which makes a decisive step in 1317, when pope John XXII includes the bull Transiturus in the Clementines

Pełny tekst źródłaIf some christian traditions (eastern orthodox, catholic, anglican) have retained the episcopal organization inherited from the first centuries of the church, some others have dropped it completely (presbyterian-reformed) or, as in some lutheran and methodist churches, have kept only certain elements of the episcopate. However, episcopacy (and more generally the supra-congregational ministry often called "episkope") has been an issue both of the multilateral ecumenical dialogue and of the bilateral dialogues between confessional families so that significative convergences can be pointed in official reporting documents : bem ("baptism - eucharist - ministry" : the major document of the multilateral dialogue) and bilateral agreements implying methodist, lutheran, anglican and roman catholic traditions. Nevertheless eastern orthodox and presbyterian-reformed traditions are not totally left out of these convergences. Furthermore, several of these confessions would think of recognizing a certain primacy of the bishop of rome, under conditions to be determined

This study focusses on Berengar of Tours’s eucharitics texts and Peter Damian’s De divina omnipotentia and shows that the very stake during that century resides in “perceptible thickness”. Berengar and Peter Damian draw two divergent ontological options on the status of the sensitive natutre—on the one hand, its consistency, on the other, its inconsistency—that accompany the two absolutly singular faces of God

Pełny tekst źródłaThe social dimension of the Eucharist allows us to explore the relation between the Eucharist, fount and apex of all the whole Christian life according to the teaching of Vatican Council II, and the commitment in daily life for the construction of a fairer and more brotherly world. If the liturgical, biblical and patristic renewals have allowed to rediscover the social dimension of the Eucharist, a dynamic vision of this sacrament proves to be an invaluable input to Christian communities today. The eucharistic community regularly challenged by the widening gap between the consumer society and starving peoples, can Christian remain deaf and blind to the situation of the poor and the humble to whom Christ is identified and continue to speak of eternal salvation ? Eating without sharing goes against eucharistic life. The Eucharist, in its essence, has a social meaning. In everyday life, worshipping should find expression in practical actions. The coherence between the mystery celebrated and daily life request that the active participation of the people in the liturgical action gives a significant impetus to an active participation of the Christians in the world. As loving one’s neighbor leads to an intelligence of the Eucharist, it is advisable to live this sacrament as a project of solidarity in a world-sized family. The ontology of the eucharistic substance leads to an ethics of the commitment and sharing. The Eucharist should go as far as a fraternity of commitment

Pełny tekst źródłaEcumenical relations tend to crystallize around the question of ministry, a subject on which current dialogue seems to be blocked. For fifty years, the Lutheran and Reformed Churches have been engaged in dialogue at the international level with the Roman Catholic Church on this question. Numerous reports have been produced. This study analyzes the strong convergences, the legitimate differences and the divergences which appear in these dialogues on the apostolicity of the Church, the importance of the common priesthood of the baptized, the necessity of a special ministry conferred by ordination for the service of preaching and administration of the sacraments and the essential importance for the Church of a ministry of episkopè to protect the integrity of the faith and preserve the unity of the church. The study demonstrates that ministry is not the ultimate question, but one that reveals fundamental ecclesiological issues which appear in the connection between eucharistic and ecclesial communion, the structuring of the Church on a universal level and its relationship with local Churches, the presence in fullness of the Church of Jesus Christ in one or several particular Churches. The study offers a reflexion which prepares the ground for moving forward to a mutual recognition of ministries which, although not currently on the agenda, nevertheless still remains possible

Pełny tekst źródłaBorn in America about 50 years ago, the inclusive christian movement advocates, according to the Gospael, for the full inclusion of the Igbt people in the life and ministry of the Church, tries to eradicate any kind of exclusion. It gathers parishes, groups and communities that provide hospitality to the Igbt people in the Churches, in the name of Jesus-Christ. It doesn't constitute an organized movement but it refects a great diversity of theological, pastoral and political options. We have used a sociological survey to approach those welcoming christian parishes, groups and communities. We have tried to elaborate a typology, based on 16 models, that could do justice to the diversity of pastoral strategies. We also have tried to articulate a theology of hospitalité, induced by this practice of welcome and disseminated in an abundant collection of liturgical, pastoral and apologetical literarture. We therefore have tried to present, in a systematic and somehow transitory way, the converging and diverging reflexions coming from that movement, its practices of welcome and its theologians. They make of the hospitality of God, expressed in Jesus-Christ, the foundation of community life and ethical investigation of how to relate with one another in sexuality as in life together
Disco, Bernard William. "God's Gracious and Scandalous Gift of Desire: The Liturgy of the Eucharist in Louis-Marie Chauvet's 'Symbolic Exchange' with Jean-Luc Marion's Phenomenology of Givenness and René Girard's Mimetic Theory". Thesis, Boston College, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/bc-ir:108628.
Pełny tekst źródłaTraditionally, Church teaching has examined the Eucharist in metaphysical terms (‘what is it?’: substance, presence, and causality) and its liturgical celebration as a sacrifice (a re-presentation of Christ’s self-sacrifice on the cross). Prompted by Vatican II’s exhortation to the faithful for ‘full, conscious, active participation’ in the liturgy (cf. Sacrosanctum Concilium 14, 27, 30), this dissertation re-interprets the Eucharistic liturgy and participants’ role in it through the root metaphor of gift: a gift of desire, which impacts participants’ desires, relationships, and selfhood. It proposes a ‘relational approach’ to the Eucharist by asking: What is going on ‘relationally’ in the Eucharistic celebration? How might the Eucharist impact our desire, relations, identity? How does or ought the liturgy of the Eucharist concern relationships between the participants and others? What specifically does the Church celebrate in its liturgy of the Eucharist? Louis-Marie Chauvet’s ‘symbolic exchange’ model of the Eucharistic Prayer, when put in conversation with both Jean-Luc Marion’s phenomenology of gift and René Girard’s mimetic theory, yields an understanding of the Eucharist as God’s gracious and scandalous gift of divine desire. The gift is gracious as an embodied expression of divine love, and also scandalous as it challenges recipients’ autonomy with a radical call to charity demanding an existential response. This dissertation upholds Christ’s self-gift as the ultimate decision to love in a perfect reversal of sacrificial violence, which Christians are called to imitate. It emphasizes the liturgy’s structure as a dynamic event of being encountered by God’s gift of himself and reception of this gift through particular responses. This understanding aims to re-appropriate traditional Catholic teaching on the Eucharist in more contemporary terms. It aims to explain how ‘fully conscious and active participation’ in the sacred mysteries occurs, that liturgy and life may be more richly interrelated

Lysack, Alan Maxym. "The ascetic and eucharistic dimensions of orthodox spirituality : Metropolitan John Zizioulas and the debate in contemporary orthodox theology".
Metropolitan John (Zizioulas) of Pergamon posits that there were two types of spirituality in the early Church: monastic and eucharistic. He further argues that Saint Maximos the Confessor was responsible for forging a synthesis of the two. This dissertation is a study in Orthodox spirituality that takes the Maximian synthesis as a point of departure and uses it as a paradigm to examine the thought of several Fathers and contemporary Orthodox theologians, including that of Metropolitan John Zizoulas himself. It becomes apparent in the dissertation that Metropolitan John Zizioulas understands the synthesis differently than does Saint Maximos and his celebrated successors, Saint Symeon the New Theologian and Saint Gregory Palamas. Several ambiguities in the spirituality proposed by Metropolitan John Zizioulas are examined in detail. The Metropolitan’s position that the Eucharist enjoys an exclusive primacy in Orthodox spirituality and ecclesiology is challenged. The thesis advanced in the dissertation is that spirituality and asceticism should be constitutive of Orthodox ecclesiology, allowing in Orthodox spirituality for a primacy of the Eucharist that is inclusive of them. Orthodox spirituality is revealed as a balance of the ascetic and eucharistic dimensions, a reality that is best demonstrated in the integration of the eucharistic liturgy with the liturgy of the heart.

Pełny tekst źródłaIn the 16th century, the different understandings of salvation in jesus christ lead to the division of the western church. After more than four centuries of division, these same churches are now involved in the ecumenical movement, the aim of which is the reconciliation of the churches. Is there an agreement on the question of salvation today? the first part of this study is devoted to the dialogue between roman catholics and lutherans, opposition on this question having been particularly animated between luther and the roman church. There seems to be a general consensus in the understanding of salvation, but which has not yet been fully translated at the ecclesiological level. Differences remain regarding eucharist and ministry. These differences represent different conceptions of the church, of its nature and in particular its instrumentality as god's cooperator in the salvation of men. This fundamental difference should, however, not retain its divisive character. Under certain circumstances, this difference could be regarded as an expression of a legitimate diversity. The second part examines the contribution of numerous dialogues with other churches (anglican, reformed, orthodox. . . ). These dialogues confirm the theses of a fundamental difference in the understanding of the church and of its instrumentality. This question does not separate the reformation churches but remains open in the dialogues of these churches with the roman catholic church

Pełny tekst źródłaThis research attempts to bring out the theology of the Eucharist that underlies a body of preaching aimed at the common people. The context in which John Chrysostom operates is that of the Christian initiation of new converts, marked by the paganism that prevailed in the city of Antioch; where the Jewish community also exerted a strong influence. After a near-exhaustive reading of the corpus, we focused our study on five homilies that have been preserved in the form in which they were most probably delivered. The method applied to these texts combines modern semiotics, which is attentive to the interplay of linguistic effects, with the resources of philology and rhetoric. Chrysostom’s theology can be distinguished not so much in the way he articulates concepts as in the enunciative strategy he uses to address these “half-Christians”. This theology is grounded in an original interpretation of the Scriptures –in which explanation and application to Christian life are not be dissociated. This study highlights the presence, in the work of John Chrysostom, of a mystagogy that is a path to indepth conversion. The Eucharist then appears as indissolubly linked to a way of life which bears fruits of charity and reconciliation. What gives the theology of John Chrysostom its distinctive shape is its critical relation to the notion of sacrifice. The latter, which is frequently made mention of, is not characterized by its object, but by the inner disposition of he who offers it – most notably by his submission to God. A third term can account for the Eucharist : anaphora, provided we take it to include not only the Eucharistic prayer, but also a process of reference and uplift. Through the celebration, the participants are made witnesses to the unique event of salvation, which, in return, will never stop transforming them

Pełny tekst źródłaThe enigma of saint Lubin stained glass window at Chartres, showing a wine story in the middle of the saint’s life, can be resolved by a symbolic interpretation of it’s images, if paying regard to the medieval mental schemes : the central Eucharistic mystery of the wine enables the young Lubin to achieve sainthood, through his own vocation of consecrated (the learned canon of XIIth century appearing under the VIth century monk), priest and bishop, Good Sheperd dispensing divine gifts. The unusual presence of small human figures at the outer framework of the stained glass window emphasises the important role to be played by the laity in the Eucharistic mysteries. It takes part, with the introductive images, to a preached exhortation of the window, inviting all spectators to be converted. It’s theological teaching imports as it’s means of expression the images of the Scriptures, as interpretated by glossa ordinaria, updated, and organised into a Theological Sum chapter, remaining faithfull to the Fathers’ teaching about figura and veritas, the relationship figura-veritas of the wine of the Last Supper and the blood of Christ being of the same ‘type’ as between the Old and the New Testaments, or between the Life of earthly Church and Eschatology, using the constructive resources of Logic, without submitting to its mystery devastating hegemony. Far from being an advertisement for the relic of the saint, for the bishop or the canons, the stained-glass window thus takes place in the contemporaneous stream of the Parisian ‘Biblico-moral School’, who shared with Saint-Victor, in particular with Richard, the project to lay foundations for a moral reformation of Clergy and Laity on the study, -as well historical as symbolic-, of the Bible, and on preaching

Van, der Water Desmond. "Towards a eucharistic theology and practice for the South African context : a re-appraisal of Reformed eucharistic theology from the perspective of the Eucharist in Catholic liberation theology". Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/15883.
Pełny tekst źródłaThe theology and practice of the eucharist emerged as one of the major points of contention in the 16th Century Reformation. While the Reformers themselves differed in their respective eucharistic theologies, they were nevertheless unanimous in rejecting what they perceived as heresy and abuse in the theology and practice within the Roman Catholic Church. Part One of this dissertation explores the Reformed teaching on the eucharist by surveying the eucharistic theologies of the Reformers, Huldrych Zwingli and John Calvin, and more recent theologians, Peter Forsyth and Karl Barth. The challenge of the Reformation, however timeous and valid, did not go far enough. While the Reformers went to great lengths to expose theological heresy and to condemn abuses, they gave scant attention to the contextual implications of their theology. For instance, the Reformation focussed on such theological issues as the "essence" or "substance" of Christ's presence in the eucharist, without giving attention to its missiological implications within the contextual struggles for human liberation from socio-political and economic structures of domination, oppression and exploitation. Roman Catholic theology of liberation, emerging from Latin America in the latter part of the 20th Century, presents a compelling challenge to both traditional Catholic teaching and Reformed theology and practice. While not departing from the basic tenets of Catholic teaching, liberation theology adopts a radically critical stance, whereby any orthodox theology and practice is judged in terms of its relevance to the existential situations of human oppression, poverty and suffering. Part Two of this dissertation reflects on the response of liberation theologians to a new crisis for the sacraments within the Roman Catholic Church. This is done by surveying the eucharistic theologies of Juan Luis Segundo, Rafael Avila (from Latin America) and Tissa Balasuriya (from Asia). The Churches of the Reformed tradition have not as yet adequately responded to the challenges within a country characterised by racism, state oppression, social injustices and economic exploitation. A Reformed eucharistic theology and practice should be formulated for the South African context, which takes seriously the criticisms of Catholic liberation theology, while simultaneously exploring the contextual implications of its own Reformed tradition. It is not necessary for a Reformed understanding of the eucharist to break with tradition, anymore than Catholic liberation theology does. What is required is that the tradition be retrieved in relation to the struggle for liberation within our historical context. Part Three sets out the proposal for a eucharistic theology and practice for the South African context, in terms of two major themes, namely those of protest and celebration. These themes are fundamental to both the biblical framework and the contextual application of the eucharist, are consonant with the intention of Reformed eucharistic theology. Central to the proposal will be the formulation of a theology and practice of the community-of-faith. It will become evident as to what is meant by community-of-faith as we explore the above themes.
